On recommendation from friends and our vet, when we knew it was time for our Max, we called Journeys Home. From the first phone contact with a very kind receptionist to the very end, we experienced nothing but compassion and empathy. Dr. Megan came to our home, greeted deaf and blind Max, and kindly explained the procedure. She even encouraged our other dog to be there. My fur baby had been sick for a good while. When it became apparent the end was imminent I called Journeys Home for help. I did not want his final memory to be a car ride - which he hated, and a cold steel table with bright lights in a sterile environment. The Doctor came out within hours after I called and was so kind and gentle. I was able to be with him and she let me stay with him until I was (barely) able to let him go. Follow up to terrible experience. Took them to small claims court where I represented myself. They hired expensive lawyer and probably spent thousands to dismiss my case. In the process one of their vets lied numerous times under oath. Apparently from the judges decision since they only provide euthanasia services they are not held to the same standard as regular vets. Saying goodbye to a pet isn't easy; Journeys Home Pet makes it about as easy as it can be. From the moment I talked with Dr. Laura on the phone, even though I knew this was her job, she gave me personal attention and was very compassionate. I'm grateful for their extended hours, and a 5:30 afternoon appointment allowed all the members of our household to be present. When Dr. Laura arrived she may have been a bit surprised to find five adults sitting around our cat, but took in the scene and put us all at ease. She was kind with both the people in the room and the animal, explaining everything thoroughly but not so much that it got technical or overwhelming. I had not considered home euthanasia before, but it was SO comfortable for both the animal and the people involved. We got to sit in the cat's favorite window seat in the evening sun, with familiar smells and people and surroundings. Like I opened with, this was about as easy as it was going to get. Dr. Laura was patient with our tears and final goodbyes, and was clearly in no rush. I really appreciated that. At the end, Dr. Laura asked if we wanted to share a hug with her - I personally will never turn one down - and I really appreciated that too. We had our dog put down yesterday. Katie was able to meet with us in our home the same day we called. She was very compassionate, understanding and made our dog (Abbey), and our family, comfortable during Abbey's last moments of life. Our dog was sedated before being euthanized, letting her go peacefully and with dignity. The other dogs we've had put down seemed to struggle at the end, so this seemed like a much more humane way to go. Also, having this done at home made it seem much more relaxing as our dog didn't get nervous about going to the vet and waiting in an unfamiliar room with other distractions/stressors. Katie's services go beyond just in home euthanasia though; she also arranged to take care of the cremation process and will be dropping off the remains once the process is finished. Having to put Remmy down was one of the hardest things I've ever done, but I couldn't imagine having to do it with any other vet than Dr. Katie. We put our beloved pet down today and Dr. Katie Hilst turned this traumatic event into a peaceful, beautiful experience for us. Our dog was given some treats to distract him while Dr. Hilst sedated him and then he gently fell asleep. She administered a second med to stop his heart but he was completely unaware.
