It's impossible to visit Screenland and not feel the love of movies and the movie going experience all around you. Don't let the small size scare you away - even with some smaller theater sizes, they're dedicated to excellent quality of picture and sound. They seek feedback from their fellow movie goers to bring back nostalgic favorites, create events like outdoor movies and festivals, show movies that may have never seen a full theater release, partner with local businesses to create custom collectible ticket stubs for special screenings, even show movies on 35 & 70mm film - a rare occurrence in the US and something very special. Screenland's greatest, and my favorite, quality is that it naturally offers true sense of community - every time I'm there, strangers are interacting in small ways over their shared love of movies and unique experiences. Support local independent theaters!! I always love coming to Screenland! The staff is always friendly and fast getting the snacks. I love that they play older movies especially horror movies. I mostly come to see the older movies but have gone to some early screenings and new movies that aren't playing at AMC. Most of the theaters are small and the sound isn't super loud but still amazing quality for the size. I am SO excited for the film projector to be installed! read more

If you are looking to support a local legend (I used to visit the old Screenland location in high school) and catch an amazing film then there's no other option. Screenland Armour is the place to be. They show a wide array of current motion pictures as well as, older cult classics. The theatres are small and most of the chairs do not recline however, I don't mind. The point is this is a true cinema experience and it beats the big chain movie going experience any day of the week. The concessions are classic, popcorn and alcohol a-plenty but, what's really cool is all the seasonings they have you can add to your popcorn and the singe servings condiment cups of movie theatre butter to drizzle as you go over your popcorn. The finishing touches and pride Screenland puts into the tried and true transition of going to the movies makes it a notch above the Cinemarks and AMCs of the world. Also, the 31 Days of Horror leading up to Halloween is always epic! You don't want to miss out on old school titles that tickle any horror fiends heart. read more

I visited Screenland Amour Theatre in North KC last month. The theatre was nice, clean, and updated and had comfortable seating. The food menu included multiple vegan options which we love to see. Overall the prices were reasonable. I ordered the Beyond Burger but also saw an option to make the "Attack of the Killer Cheese" (grilled cheese) vegan, which I'm guessing also means a build-your-own vegan pizza is possible. My earliest memory of this theater was going to see the rock opera Tommy in 1975. Since then it has been a country opry, discount theater and it sat vacant for many years. Fortunately the building was saved and brought back to its former glory of being a first run movie theater. There are now four screens and Screenland now shows not only newly released mainstream Hollywood blockbusters but a regular dose of indie, foreign, cult classics and retro classics. A true mecca for any taste. I don't see as many movies as I would like but when I do go out for a special film - it's always Screenland Armor. Just like my food and beverage choices, I prefer to support the independently owned retail businesses whenever possible. Pick a favorite movie from their line-up and go sit in a renovated old-world moviehouse and enjoy the nostalgia. Make sure that you buy some popcorn or other snack to keep their profit margin high enough to keep the projectors running for the long term. Love this theater! A great KC independent theater that shows both current movies and several classics. I've seen some cult classics there like The Last Dragon and Manhunter and they also often host events by Forever Bogus like old school SNICK nights or Are You Afraid of the Dark Marathons (looking forward to that this October). The staff is very friendly, laid back atmosphere, and nice cinematic decor. Additionally, they've added their vintage cinema themed attached bar, Rewind Video. I don't go to movie theaters anymore. I just don't want to pay to put up with talking and cell phone screens when I can make a good bowl of popcorn and watch a movie from my bed. But Screenland was showing The Muppet Christmas Carol as part of their 2024 holiday lineup, and my family will not miss an opportunity to see that on the big screen. Would I still rather watch it at home? Yes, but I cannot be a Scrooge at Christmas. The theater is old and quirky. They sell food and standard concessions, as well as alcohol. The concession line moved along fairly well, considering they were pretty packed that Sunday evening. There was a Muppet blogger/historian in the lobby with a Kermit puppet taking pictures with fans and afterward he opened the show by giving some backstory on the movie. The large screen room we were in looked sold out, and everyone was respectful and seemed to enjoy the film without quoting or singing along. Even though we all wanted to. Went here for the first time for a screening of Barbie. It's a nice theater with an old school vibe. The theater itself is not your typical theater when compared to more modern ones like AMC. It's small and the screen is a lot smaller too so no need to sit as far back as you typically would in other theaters. There's a full bar inside when you first walk in and a lot of seating to sit and wait or eat and drink. They offer a lot more than just typical movie theater food. You can order burgers and full sized pizzas. I wasn't hungry but I'll definitely try their food next time I take a visit here. read more

The small arts movie theatre is the way to go these days. I went to the Screenland for a Yelp event and was thrilled to see how busy the theatre was on a week night. Anytime I go to a big movie theatre these days, it's like a ghost town - it really feels like the movies are dead. But not here. The Screenland has a full menu and bar. Bonus points for multiple vegan options, including a Beyond Burger, veggie nuggets, and even pizzas with vegan cheese. I ordered a Bavarian Pretzel, which was unfortunately pretty bad. It was very hard and greasy. Their kitchen is pretty small, and had a hard time keeping up with demand so the wait was pretty long. Despite that, I still really appreciate the options. One of the best things about Screenland is that they've updated the seats. I was totally expecting moth-balled, dirty, uncomfortable seats like some arts theatres, but these were new and clean. Not reclining, but still nice. The Screenland manages to preserve it's historic vibes, while updating the important things - their bathrooms were clean and updated as well. I love this theater!! The best movie theater in KC in my opinion. They show popular big releases, indie films, old movies, everything! They do tons of fun special events throughout the year -- my two favorites being outdoor movies in the bag parking lot during the summer (some are even free!!) and the Shocktober horror movie festival throughout October! While they may not have the massive heated recliners you get at a mainstream movie theater, you need to support this place for the great vibes!! The box office is off to the right when you walk inside the door off of Armour Rd. There's a small parking lot behind the building with an entrance off of Erie, which is great for off hours or weeknights! During busier times, you'll have to go with street parking, but I always find a spot within a couple blocks! They have an extensive beer menu and lots of food options including grilled cheeses and pizzas! Hot tip -- there's a bar in the basement that you can get to from the alleyway behind the theater called Rewind Video! It's a total 90s throwback with old gaming systems and VHS tapes and nostalgic decor! Definitely recommend getting a drink before or after a movie Wed-Sat nights! Love this place!! read more

I saw Barbie here opening night and couldn't have had a better experience. One of the theatre owners came out to chat with the audience about it being their biggest day ever. I love exploring around cities to find accessible gems--and Screenland is DEFINITELY a gem that I'm hoping to return to time and time again! So this is definitely not your AMC or large movie theater, but this place has so much character. This movie theater is one of the oldest movie theaters in KC (according to Pitch in March of 2022, second only to a theater specializing in pornographic films!). This theater has 4 screens (at least what I saw), but has a full bar and movie theater snacks. The beer options actually blew me away - - lots of local beer options on draft! And if you want to, you can kill time before or after the film with the arcade games! While the theaters are definitely smaller than your AMC style theaters, they're great sized for a more intimate showing of a film. My friend and I got there a bit late (previews had already started), but even with that, there didn't seem to really be a bad seat in the house. Again, not the fancy lean back seats, but a true old school theater. With the being said, I watched a 3 hour movie here, and I enjoyed the movie just as much as if I had an armchair! Screenland is unique because the types of events they host. Whether it's a 90's Throwback viewing or their awesome outdoor movie series in the summer, they do not miss! I love how they constantly strive to offer their customers a cool and unforgettable cinematic experience. The outdoor movie series started during COVID if I'm not mistaken, and they have been bringing it back every summer since then. The tickets are pretty low costing for a group, or pair and sometimes you might catch a show for free! They have a really nice concession stand offering traditional movie snacks, full meals and my favorite.... adult beverages! They do a great job of advertising all events on their Facebook page, and I recently caught a free event for the screening of the season finale of The Last of Us! I'm a big fan of AMC theaters because it's close to my house and I use their stubs card for perks. But Screenland is my favorite local theater. I just wish I lived closer. They do play some cool limited release films here. Plus they have a small arcade and bar so you should arrive early and have some fun before the movie starts. I recently went to a film in one of their smaller rooms and it felt like going to someone's home theater. I felt at home and all the strangers around me were friends who were there to enjoy a film. The Screenland Armour is a movie nerd's heaven. They show some first run movies, but they're most notable for their theme parties, cult movie showings and even special tv live streams that they air throughout the year. This includes special movies (comic book, sci-fi, anime, horror, etc...,) holiday specific programming (especially around Halloween and Christmas,) nostalgic events like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles themed brunch (thank you Forever Bogus) and even a Walking Dead season premiere. You get the picture. They have a lot of good ideas which translate to super fun events. If this sounds like something you like then I would sign up with them on their email list and social media to follow what they do. The movie theater itself, which I'm basing my review from, is an a-ok place, but definitely not as modern as some of the other theaters around town. This isn't a bad thing, it's the perfect 80s movie theater, mainly because I kind of get a feel like I'm walking into the theater in the "Thriller" video, but I wanted to put this out there for those of you who might be accustomed to other places. Most of the theaters are first come first serve, so even if you buy tickets in advance you won't have a reserved seat. The rows are also a little close together, which can be a small inconvenience if somebody needs to step out for a quick moment. The food is hit and miss. They have the normal snacks like hot buttered popcorn and boxed candy. There's also a bar and grill that will cook up a limited menu. I'm partial to the old fashioned snacks, but want to let you know the grill has been inconsistent during my visits. The drinks on the other hand are strong and solid. You can order a refillable soda, but you can also an adult beverage or two. The menu features a nice mix of craft beer options, including local, as well as a creatively named cocktail menu. It has been over 5 years since I have started going to movies at the Screenland so I figured I would update. Still one of the best movie going experiences around. They have done a TON of updates to the theater to make it more modern but keep that nostalgic feel. As this theater is a little bit of a drive for me I mainly still attend for independent films not getting a wide release and for old movies being played on Friday/Saturday nights. The concessions and bar are 2nd to none. Huge selection and the food is better than anything you could get at a chain theater. I still absolutely love the crowd that this place attracts for special showings. A lot of nice people celebrating a film they have in common. They also have a new basement bar set up to look like a retro basement from the 90's and it is worth checking out for sure! Multiple TV's with retro games, retro posters lining the walls, and a video rental area as well! Please I beg you to check this place out if you never have, it will blow you away. read more

If you're looking for some huge theater imax experience sure, you can shell out the extra cash for bigger screens and bone-raddling surround sound at AMC. (Sure it drowns out the crying children.) But if you want to enjoy a night out with your friends or family with some great food, (the Kevin Bacon is *Chef's kiss*) an extensive selection of local brews and creative (movie themed) cocktails and comfortable seating then the Screenland is for you! Not interested in going out to see the newest release? Guess what? They almost always have a rotating selection of cult classics, horror and grindhouse, seasonal staples and anime. What a super cool local theater! I visited here recently for the first time for one of the Friday Night Fright screenings! We watched The Conjuring, and afterward there were 2 amazing guest speakers for a short Q&A. This was definitely worth the price of admission. The theater itself has a great vibe as well with it still showing off its age in such a great way. They have concessions and alcohol which is a huge plus. The staff there are also fantastic and seem to have an awesome time working there. Definitely recommend this place to anyone that has not been yet and I cannot wait to go back! read more

It's old. It doesn't have the latest technology like recliner seats. There was no booming THX rattling my brain pan. And I loved it! It has character. From the nostalgic movie previews and ads to the old school posters hanging up. The real bonus was before the movie....(which happened to be the best Batman of all, 1989s Tim Burton version)....the owner/theater manager I really don't know who he was...stepped in front of the stage and welcomed everyone. There were even some trivia questions. This feels like your theater, not the big corporate one near the mall and Applebees . I look forward to coming back. read more

Downtown North Kansas City is the home of Screenland Armour theater. This locally-owned independent movie house currently features 4 screens, a grill and bar, plus an arcade. Located along Armour Road in the heart of Northtown, this venue has been in this location for nearly 100 years. Under a few names, and closed for periods of time in between, the renovations have been good to keep the space attractive and accessible for patrons. Street parking is available out front. There are two parking lots on both the backside of the building and across the street on the south side of the block. For this visit, I took my dad to see Fritz Lang's Metropolis. It's a 1927 silent film about a futuristic city and the conflict between the underworld laborers and the highrise commander creating and running the city. More about this film soon. We arrived a full hour before the show started to catch up and grab a bite to eat. The venue offers a grill and a small menu. The options are limited to grilled cheese sandwiches, pizza and snacks. The bar features a nice mix of local beers and a full bar. We opted for the ever popular Kevin Bacon grilled cheese sandwich, which is served with chips. The sandwich is quite hard to chew because it's toasted so fully, but the mix of bacon, cheese and aioli are completely in harmony. Since my last visit, some 4 years ago, the theater has expanded to add 2 more screens. They took over the next door floral shop and built in the new theater rooms and additional arcade and waiting areas. The viewing rooms are small compared to the big chain movie brands, but this location is cozy. They offer 2 rooms with a 45-55 seat capacity. A third room has a 70-seat capacity and the fourth and final room is the largest. Seating 200 plus. I highly recommend popping into the other viewing rooms to check out the space. The larger room features two northland themed murals on the walls, as well as couches. Back to my movie. To see a film like Metropolis, is rare in 2020. It's nearly 100 years old but the subject of the film endures through time. I love this local theater because they can offer the current film attractions plus rare and unique films as well. The theater acquired a newly enhanced version of Metropolis that included scenes we had never viewed before. What a delight! The viewing room we were in had updated seats which were plush and rock gently. The sound quality is on point. For being a small room, I was concerned about the quality of the film viewed so closely. Happily, there was no issue during the viewing. I highly recommend checking out the full list of upcoming films for this location. A film festival featuring the horror genre is scheduled for later this month. read more

They've got fun food, a big ol' screen, comfortable seats, quirky movie-themed decor, and the staff is nice, so what's not to love? If I lived in the area I would be a regular here. As it is, I saw a movie while on a visit, and had a fantastic time. The picture quality was great, and I've never been more comfortable in a cinema. Seriously, you may as well be Cleopatra/Julius Caesar at a Roman banquet in those front seats that recline all the way. They also were willing to tolerate my special-order monkeying with their chicken/bacon sandwich. I just hope enough locals appreciate it so the place can keep going. You're lucky, KC! read more

You go to a movie theater to see a movie. That is the only option at 99% of movie theaters. This movie theater, however, is part of the 1%. Opened in 1928 as the Armour Theater, this place is currently the Screenland Armour. From the outside, you get the impression that this is a cute little historic independent theater. However, looks can be deceiving. The inside is actually a cool and quirky place - a two-screen movie theater with a bar and a few vintage arcade games. You can come here and have a great time without seeing a movie. The bar offers the typical theater concessions along with an extensive list of craft beers and a small food menu. You can grab a drink and eat before, during, or after seeing a movie; or you can grab a drink and eat without seeing a movie at all. The grilled cheese sandwiches are not fancy or anything, but they are pretty good. While you can order and then bring your drinks and food into the theater room, I do not recommend eating the chips in there. The chips are super crunchy and yummy so you will hear your neighbors happily munching on them. General admission is $8-$10 for depending on the showtime and day of the week. 3D films have a $2 surcharge. Tickets for special events varies. This is a good theater to catch the independent films that are not showing anywhere else. The downside though is that this is not the best place to see a movie. The walls are a little thin so you may hear a bit of rumbling from time to time from the movie that is playing in the next room. Also, the projector broke the first time that I was here, and it was something that could not be fixed the same day. The movie kept freezing and eventually just quit altogether about half an hour before the ending. While I understand that we cannot really control when technology fails, it was a bummer. The staff made up for it as best as they could though by issuing a refund and giving a free concession coupon. The Screenland Armour is not my first choice to see a movie. However, check it out for the experience it offers. After all, it is extremely rare that you can hang out alone or with a small group at a movie theater without seeing a movie. You can be a movie lover or craft beer lover, and you do not need to be both, but it is even more fun here if you are both. read more

I been coming here for years and it's nice to see them expanding.It is more spacious and they have a lot of varieties with the food selection and beer selection which makes it different than the typical place. One of the favorite is their biggest screening which has a comfty couch movie seats. It is close to the screen but the seats doesn't break your neck. Probably one of the cutest movie theaters I have ever set my foot in! I have been in search of a movie theater to go to since Cinemark in the plaza closed and this was the next closest one. From the outside, I was charmed by the outside which gave off a cute historic theater vibe especially with the beautiful sign and lights outside! On the inside, it just gets even better. To our surprise, there was a huge, well stocked bar with lots of beers on tap and fun cocktails in theme with movies they are showing! Walking into the theater, I was surprised to see couches in the back row! I thought this was a homey comfy addition to the theater. It's nice to have more spacious seating to sit with your friends or cuddle with your significant other! If that doesn't sound appealing to you, there is still lots of regular theater seating which is just as comfy. In all, I really enjoyed my experience at Screenland Armour! Locally owned and operated! My favorite place to catch a movie. I very rarely go anywhere else. They don't show a bunch of commercials before the movies, don't go overboard on the number of trailers, and they don't do any gimmicky 3D nonsense. Great selection of rotating beers and they make some very delicious grilled cheese sandwiches and popcorn. They also show some of the bigger movies (think Star Wars and Marvel) on Thursday evenings before the official Friday release. Great way to avoid spoilers and you don't even have to wait for a midnight showing. Plus, they occasionally collaborate with local breweries to make special movie-themed beers and very cool commemorative beer glasses. These guys really know their stuff when it comes to movies and craft beer... A beautiful combination really. This theater in the Northland is worth the trip for the selection of mainstream and independent releases, couches and nice seats in the two theaters, old school arcade, free showings of popular tv shows and classic movies, specialty grilled cheese sandwiches (all with clever names and all very delicious), and huge selection of craft beers. The atmosphere is very casual and perfect for relaxing with a beer flight before your movie starts. Quite often they pair special showings with kegs or firkins of rare beers. The owners are also very supportive and active with local filmmakers. Screenland Armour is known to host special events such as the Arts and Crafts Fest which highlights several films, local artists, local bands, and of course more great beers (some of which are extremely rare). A big chunk of proceeds from this event goes to local charities. You can also find other great film festivals, such as Panic Fest, at this theater. I have no complaints about the place. The only complaint I have heard from anyone was someone trying to order a Bud Light or something like a Bud Light... yeah, you won't find that sort of stuff here.
