This is one of my all time favorite theaters! It's a great little cinema with only one screen but a lot of love. For $20 my son and I can watch a great movie, get snacks and support local businesses. The hot dogs and pizza are great! It's not the newest theater around but that's part of it's charm. Going to the movies is no longer about just seeing the movie. Such a cute place and it's such a great value. The movies aren't very delayed from when they were at the first run theaters either. I just saw Guardians of the Galaxy 2 for $6! And while it might not be a quite as plush as a Regal or Cinetopia, it is still very pleasant and has much more character. They try their best to keep it in nice shape and they succeed. I love this place! Ya it doesn't have the most comfortable seats and it doesn't have the ear -bleeding sound system, but you can enjoy a beer or glass of wine. Movies are $4 or $5 for 3D. It's a great deal. This is a local owned business too. And two more bonuses, you don't have to sit through tons of previews and they have paper towels in their bathrooms. Some friends of our made up a group and went to the 9 PM showing of "Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein." The theater is retro-cool and very clean. The owner is friendly and the snack bar is well stocked. The popcorn is "made before your eyes" fresh. Prices are very nice. What more can you ask for? Well worth the drive from anywhere! read more

I can't help it, I'm just a sucker for independent movie theaters. Tigard's Joy Cinema has a surprisingly large theater and while it's a bit old school seating, they do have 3D projection systems for 3d movies and they show first run movies. The best thing is their ticket prices are a LOT cheaper than all the "Big Box" theaters (Regal/Cinemark/etc.) and their concessions are a lot cheaper too. I hope they stick around. read more

Went on a deal from Amazon Local and saw a movie last Sunday with my 13 year old son. Lobby line was slow, and it is just one line for both tickets and concessions. The two people working behind the counter were working very hard and both were very pleasant. Prices for concessions were quite a bit higher than in a store, but quite a bit lower than in the glitzy theaters. The seats in the theater were comfortable enough for me not to notice them at all during the movie, and they had cupholders, thankfully, as our deal included two large sodas. I enjoyed the movie experience and had no problem hearing from near the back of the theater where my son wanted to sit. Will attend this theater again. I'm giving them five stars because the experience represents a great value. read more

Really hard to rate this place. New owners, building needs to be renovated, seats are old and uncomfortable, but you can see a movie for a dollar on Monday nights. Had a below average slice of pepperoni and an ice cold PBR one night so this place fills a very specific niche market. It's gone through a few recent renovations and rebrandings, from a barely-heated dollar theater to your home for PDX Bollywood back now to a 2nd-run theater with a streak of pulp. With one screen, options are limited, but the theater itself is comfortable and spacious. Concessions are more modestly priced than average, and there are often specials along the lines of 2 sodas + popcorn $8. Monday is $1 movie night, and Wednesday often is a revival from the grindhouse archives. Nice place to watch a movie and have a beer. The term "pub" in the name is a bit misleading. I was expecting a larger sitting room with tables. Not a place to hang out before your movie. Still, next time I am in the area, it will be worth checking out again. read more

I really enjoyed going to Joy Cinema and Pub. The things I liked most: Really inexpensive. The owner was the main person behind the counter and was extremely friendly and animated. He offered the extra popcorn to people as they left and answered all the questions a kid had about the numbers of movies they play and about what movies would be playing next. There was plenty of seating, it was easy to find from 217, and parking was not a problem at all. I also was impressed with the movies they're currently playing. I will admit that after a 2 1/2 hour movie, I was a little uncomfortable from the seats, but they're pretty standard older movie theater seats. And I don't know if serving alcohol in the theater is what I think of when I think of "pub," but I had a truly great time there and would recommend it to others. read more

I love Joy cinema!! Today was our first time going and we got 3 adult tickets to 3D feature, popcorn, candy & drinks for 2, plus a large diet Coke for under $25. I am blown away. I will forever be faithful to a cinema who considers it patrons pockets instead of price gouging. We were happy to find out last show on Wednesdays are FREE for 21+. They play weird tawdry movies. First time here, 1/6/13, and my family and I loved it. It doesn't appear as much of anything, or anything you'd stop at, from the outside but once inside the theatre we were blown away. The auditorium is huge with plenty of standard style theatre seating and the film quality was excellent. The lobby is nice and clean. Strange movie posters, etc. but interesting to look at. The popcorn is really good. Candy is somewhat pricey at $3, but cheaper than any other theatre. Overall, we'll definitely be back. Hard to beat $1 Mondays and $5 3D movies! read more

The Joy Cinema is a fine establishment where tickets are cheap and so is the food. But cheap doesn't mean bad! On Mondays, 2D tickets are $1 and 3D tickets are $2. The people are kind, and they show very fun and entertaining slideshows before the trailers. I definitely suggest this theater for the young, the older and everyone in between. read more

I'm 21 and my friend was 20. We were unable to go to a showing because they serve alcohol in the evening shows. They said my friend could not go, and then this woman walks up, with alcohol, and goes to the show with her 4 year old daughter! And the woman who worked there was very rude about it! You truly get what you pay for in this case. This means, if you pay $4 to see a movie don't expect there to be air conditioning in the theater and don't expect a comfy chair to enjoy the movie in. I often see people bring a pillow to sit on, because yes, they are that uncomfortable. They have cheap beer and some decent carnival food like nachos and pizza slices. all in all I like the place. Hopefully one day they can upgrade the place though because as of now it's really on it's way out. read more

My husband and I came on their $1 Monday. What a great deal! The people were SO nice and genuine! They told us about other fun nights to come as well. we will definitely be coming back and even bringing more friends and family! This is a not Cinetopia so don't expect giant lounge chairs. I really liked this little theater. I'm not sure what the last reviewer was talking about. the decorations were kitschy and cool. The place was clean and bright. The popcorn made fresh right before our eyes. We saw Looper and the projector was obviously new. I had bought two Groupons for this place but even when the other one is gone, I'll be back. read more

I am so glad that they have joined the seemingly up and coming area of Portlands westside. This is not your typical corporate mall style movie cinema. It is a historic landmark. A 2nd run movie theatre that is very cost effective and they have Weird Retro Movie Wednesdays that are free. It is good for me because I can get caught up on all the films that I need to learn about to be well rounded in culture kitsch. They serve up their weird with old school horror movies and grind house flicks courtesy of the famous something weird video. Titles such as; Faster Pussycat!, She devils on wheels, etc. Their regular daily show times include 3D options. They have BEER! So one can grab a micro brew with you salty popcorn! Candy, nachos, pizza, soda, and other beer and wine options as well. The decor is zebra and leopard print with retro movie posters. Keep an eye out for online promotional combo specials for this place. I have seen em listed but have yet to grab one. The only thing I wish they would do is to somehow work in some healthy and calorically responsible things to their menu. I also wonder if they have ever considered having live music before some of the shows start? Hey! But that is just my thoughts and preferences. Ok, I love this place. If you don't, get out of town. As others have mentioned, it is an amazing value even without Mondays. I actually prefer their "real 3d" to regal 3d movies. With regal, I can hardly focus on the screen, here it is crisp and clear.
