2nd time here sat at the bar this time and Jason was our chef. We ordered the baked salmon roll , special eel roll and poke roll, Jason was really nice and took care of us made our rolls fast and was funny made great convo and even treated us to some free stuff. Our waitress was polite and efficient cleared our empty plates out of the way and refills were offered every time we ran low. Great clean place seriously one of the best sushi places I've been too. They definitely have better tasting sushi than the other nearby places I've tried. We've found the service friendly enough even when they're packed, and the quality consistently yummy. -1 for ambiance. They always have pop music playing WAY TOO F'N LOUD! We always make it a point to sit outside for this reason, even in winter. News flash: Shakira and Lady Gaga videos playing at 132dB contribute NOTHING to the authenticity of the sushi dining experience. Ordered a small tray of sushi to go for $25.00. Not one piece of sushi had wasabi under the sushi role. Also there was no extra wasabi in the to go tray. Ever try eating sushi without wasabi? Terrible. I called Joy Sushi and the person said she was sorry there should have been wasabi in the tray or in a separate box But not on the sushi itself. I have been to nearly every Japanese restaurant in Whittier, La Habra, and La Mirada and Joy Sushi is by far the worst Japanese restaurant. These people simply do not care for they should have checked the to go order. If I could have put zero stars I would have done it. Joy Sushi is a really nice little place in the Whitwood Town Center. The rolls are amazing and so are the people. I watched the sushi chef and a patron down a whole beer, the bottom of which contained a quail egg. The women are lovely and pleasant although now and then they've got some odd stuff on their flat screens. Last time I went I was watching a Beyonce DVD. I've enjoyed some really creamy sake and tempura rolls. My preference is for yellowtail tuna and a few other raw delights, and in the several times I've been there, I have yet to suffer any disappointments. Delicious sushi in Whittier???? Heck ya! Tried several rolls and they were all fresh and so yummy, especially the Mexican roll and BCT roll. It was my sons birthday so they put on special music and gave him a big plate full of mochi ice cream and sang to him. I gave it 4 stars because it wasn't the best sushi I've ever had but it is the best sushi in Whittier for sure! read more

I've never been but it's my go-to for delivery food. All that really needs to be said is the crazy avocado appetizer is one of the best dishes I've ever eaten, and I eat a lot. I could honestly eat it every day. Other than that, the fish is always very fresh and the food arrives beautifully and always at the right temperature. I never have an issue with the rice being dry or poorly prepared rolls. Everything is good here, I just can't wait to try every item on the fusion menu. read more

I've only recently got myself into the sushi game, so I've had the opportunity to check out several eateries over the past few months to gather my opinions about the sushi world. Joy Sushi is pretty darn good, actually! Even the wife (who is NOT the sushi type) enjoys it, so that's got to say something. First and foremost: Happy hour specials. They're reasonable, affordable, and downright delicious. You'd be foolish not to come in between the hours of 3p-6p to partake in the wonderful offerings that grace the happy hour menu. One could easily make a meal just out of it. The quality of the food here is well above average. The sushi simply melts in your mouth, the flavors are quite nice, and it all just looks so pretty! Another good deal are their bento boxes. You get a lot of food for around $10-11. My only advice here is to stay away from the teriyaki beef. It's a bit Yoshinoya-esque, if you know what I mean (shaved beef), and it's just not that great. Everything else though is quite good. read more

I am shocked that Joy Sushi does not have 5 stars. Everybody that works there is great. The Sushi Chefs are Masters, truly! A great place or the family or a date. We have been eating there soon as they opened years ago and have had everything on the menu. We have brought friends here and now they are regulars. It can get loud in there but that is because everybody is enjoying the food and having a great time. Their other dishes besides sushi are also excellent! It was Friday night and I had an urge for some Japanese food. I had read some reviews regarding this place, and they were hit or miss. But I decided to be adventurous!.. When we arrived to Joy Sushi... the place was PACKED!!! We actually had to wait for about 10 minutes. There was definitely a lot of energy in the air, the staff would drink along side the customers! People where generally having a great time! As for the food, it was delicious! The owners/staff seemed very nice. My only complaint would be that we had to get the staff attention to get what we needed a few times. But the place was full of other customers so I can see why! read more

Its hard to miss with the quality of the fish and $2.50 sake bombs. As others have said it can get pretty loud but thats half the fun, and the staff is always super cool. And most importantly, they have the best Hawaiian Roll around. Sometimes I even ask for a little side of extra ponzu. This is my second review on Joy Susi, it's still pretty decent, no complaints here, but I did want to add a little something regarding the items labeled as "spicy" on their menu. It really IS spicy. I'm sure any sushi enthusiast who is used to eating spicy tuna rolls knows it has a little kick to it, Joy sushi's spicy tuna is extremely spicy. I moved to Whittier not too long ago and I did what any new person does, look for a good local sushi bar and make friends. After checking out a few sketchy places, I came across Joy Sushi. What a JOY! The chefs are extremely friendly behind the bar, the fish is always fresh and the prices are not bad at all. They have happy hour from 4-7 pm on Monday - Thursday which is comprised of $2 dollar beers and buy-one-get-one sushi rolls. A great, cheap dinner! After going once a week for three weeks, the chefs remembered me and took great care of me. The place is simple, the bar area and the dinning area. Behind the bar there are two flat screens with either sports or news on. If you ask them to put something on, they probably will, unless some one is watching what ever is currently on. Then they have what I call the "random screen" to the left of the bar. This flat screen is hooked up to a DVD player that plays mostly concert/ music video DVDs. I usually catch myself watching the "random screen" more than I watch what ever is behind the bar. Its a fun place to eat good sushi, plain and simple. read more

Only reason i don't give 5 stars is that I only sit with the same chef. So in all fairness this review is based only on Jason's performance. That being said Joy is tha bomb!! We've been going to Joy since they opened and Jason has definitely raised the bar since he's been there. When ever we want to celebrate or take out of town guests for a local treat this is our go to spot. I prefer sashimi to sushi and the fish is always fresh and the quality top notch. My wife appreciates the cleanliness of the restaurant and the personal attention the smaller restaurant affords the customer. She doesn't care for either sushi or sashami and opts for the bento boxes. Every time she's ordered one the chicken and vegetables have been excellent. For those who have tried it and not been satisfied, speak to Joy directly and I'm sure she will make it right. read more

Ok, so I read some of the other reviews on Yelp for this place and I decided to give it a try. The atmosphere was ok, the layout was what you would typically expect in a sushi restaurant. I've been to some great sushi restaurants from Japan to NYC, even Paris. I've also been to some not so great hole in the wall places, so I figure I have a good base of reference to compare to. This place was so overpriced for what they served us. I happen to like Maki-Yaki, they have an ok menu for decent prices. This place charged $12 for Nabuyaki Udon!!!..... and it was just ok. I paid $45 for udon, a lobster roll two drinks four pieces of gyoza and a cucumber salad. It's basically an over priced Maki Yaki. To top it off they were BLASTING a live Shakira DVD. I mean it was so loud. I couldn't wait to get out of there! I gave them a one star because I was so dissatisfied that I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Save your money and go to Nico-Nico or Asahi in La Habra. read more

I love sushi. Period. Joy Sushi is by far on my top 3 favorite sushi joints. My boyfriend and I come here at least 2-3 times a month, and we are never disappointed with the baked lobster roll and the shrimp tempura roll. Every experience here is enjoyable, although one time we wanted to try something new, the waitress suggested the Joy roll. Ultimate fail, it was bland and over cooked. When we tried to send it back for a different roll, she said we couldn't and they couldn't take it off the bill?? Ridiculous. My favorite sushi place!! Well because they make my favorite roll, it is just a rainbow roll, (which is assorted seafood on cali roll) BUT they top it with the BEST sauce ever!! It is ginger/garlic/lemon sauce, it has so much flavor!!! Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. I order the rainbow roll with no salmon or shrimp, sub tuna, white fish or avocado, & i ask for extra sauce!! Also the beef udon is excellent. I normally never order anything other than sushi @ a sushi place, but one time my friend ordered the beef udon. The beef was so juicy and flavorful!! Lastly, you have to try the tempura icecream...so yummy!! This place deserves 5+ stars!!!! Not only is the food ALWAYS delicious but we had the best service at our dinner the other night!!!!!!!! 1. We called ahead and said we were going to be a group of 16, celebrating my birthday and mine & my fiancées engagement... they accommodated us perfectly. When we arrived they didn't care that we totally rearranged the tables so we all could sit together. 2. This is where they blew us all away... they brought out 2 bottles of Sake. 2 plates of desserts. And a round of Sake bombs (tradition to cheers with these for an engagement). 3. Everyone got there food without a crazy long wait and no ones order was messed up. Not only was I more than pleased with the impeccable service we got but everyone in our party was so impressed!!! Love the sushi chefs. From the moment you walk in, they hail your presence. They have so many delicious creations to choose from--on the menu and on their specials board. I love their sashimi selection. Mackerel anyone? Also, their shishito peppers are a perfect compliment to anything you order. Check out their salmon skin salad. It's the perfect blend of crunchy salmon skin strips and greens, daikon, carrots... I always ask them to add bonito flakes and they oblige... Also, they have a fresh mango salad that compliments sashimi orders of any kind. Wish they had more green tea selections... Like more taditional Japanese stuff, but then again, not everyone can cater to my tea-drinking problem. On a busy day, the bench seating is a bit 'in your face', but hey, I love people and so should you! read more
