We also love the garlic edamame, very good. I also ordered a spider roll, i thought it comes with a side of brown sauce to drizzle on top of the sushi for flavor? But that sauce is missing, probably they forgot? Regardless, i still give them 5 stars. So it took me a few weeks to get the nerve to review this so called sushi joint.Upon arrival we had to wait a few minutes to be seated,no problem at all.But while waiting we just noticed trouble by the staff trying to either clean tables and getting people seated.Or getting the patrons there bills and paying there bills.While we waited we just noticed a lot of confusion by the staff.The one Good thing was they had the Dodger game on every Tv in the house. I had heard some good things in the past and was willing to give it a wack,But just observing while waiting patiently made me think otherwise.So we seated and ordered.We ordered the Yellowtail sashimi with 2 bowls of rice ,a scallop roll,and Noodles for the lil One.Also To I threw in a tempura plate for starters. So they bring out our food in a timely manner.I tried the tempura first without any hesitation of the heat that was omitting from the flaky crust.I hit and it was like chewing plastic.I didn't even bother with the rest of it.Rubber with Panko crust.So I moved on to the 20$ sashimi plate.Ive never seen a worst interpretation of sashimi in my life.As a sushi chef behind that counter you are supposed to cut every imperfection off that piece of fish.This was not done and done very poorly.The fish is to be clean and ready for consumption and melt in your mouth.I was chewing pieces that should have never been left on my fish.Every piece was poorly cut,after advising the staff they took half of it off which was unacceptable.The scallop roll tasted like dog food.Half of our food was left on the plates.This was just a horrible idea,but I'm glad I got to figure that out myself.I should have listened to my inner sushi and gone to E sushi right around the block.I won't stray again.After explaining how bad there food was to the Server i received a small discount.I gotta discount for you We will never return. read more

Buyer beware! They charge an 18% service charge for party's of 6 or more even if you bring two kids ages 10 and younger, 2 teens and 2 adults. This place isn't the best for sushi in Whittier and we DEFINITELY WILL NOT BE BACK. Plus they tried to sell me 2 beers that were 1 1/2 years expired. I wish they cared the same about their service as they do charging you fees so it would warrant charging those fees. First time here. Food was not fresh at all. Tempura shrimp tasted like a smelly fridge. I tried 2 rolls and the fish was not cold. Sashimi plate looked glossy and old. Everything was a mushy mess. Why include cream cheese and avocado in a roll if you're only going to put a microscopic amount that is hardly even visible? I will not be coming coming a 2nd time. read more

Joy is our goto spot for some of the best sushi around. Rolls are large and they put fat slices of fish on top. Average a couple of dollars more per roll than some other places but you get what you pay for. read more

Great food most of the time, but they don't seem to be too interested in their customers. Food shouldn't be difficult, but the Joy Sushi staff somehow make it so. You will find similar sushi and better service at Amazon Fresh up the street. Hell, you could even try a gas station. read more

This place is always busy which means people like it. As for me, I was not impressed. Service is very slow and service could use some improvements. It is located in Whittwood. It has inside seating as well as outside seating. There are no heat lamps if it gets cold. We ordered 3 different rolls and I wasn't much of a fan of any of them. I like my rolls to be on the warm side to feel the fresh taste. My crunch roll was very cold and fell apart every time I picked one up. The Vegas roll was the only one warm and would be the better one of the 3. The tempura roll was the worst. I couldn't even eat it. Flavor was off and I just wasn't digging it. All the rolls were poorly put together and missing flavor. Honestly, I would not come back here. There are way better sushi places out there than this. No bueno Joy Sushi! read more

My friend and I tried here the first time. He ordered an eel roll and said it was good, but not worth the price. I unfortunately ordered a fresh roll with fresh tuna on top. When it came out, the tuna looked dull in color, but I didn't think too much of it. I got food poisoning just a few hours later. In and out of the bathroom. I gave it 2 stars because of the eel roll. Frequent customers. My boyfriend has been coming here long before I came along, the guys call him by name every time we walk into the restaurant. We always have the best food and time when we eat and drink here. I recommend eating at the bar if your a small 1-4 party and a table for anything over that. The ambiance is casual and clean inside and outside. In just a short few months I'd like to say I've ordered or sampled (from someone else) about 80% of their menu, but I can't say that because Brad Pitt & his 2 sidekicks are always switching it up with specials of the day. I've been coming to Joy since it opened and it is hands down, my favorite place to eat, EVER! The staff here are beyond kind, especially Monae, and all the chefs are hilarious! (My favorite is Kim AKA Brad Pitt; Paul and Jason are pretty awesome, too!) The food is great and reasonably priced. My favorites are the Whittier Roll and the Albacore Delight Roll. Portions are very good not too small and not too big. Negative- The negative things are is that service is really slow and they don't always have what u want such as Toro and Yuzu its a green Citrus paste you put on white sushi. This place was very good! The servers were sweet and attentive and very helpful. I came around 2pm so hardly anyone inside and I sat at the bar. I ordered beef gyoza a crunch roll and a tempura roll pretty simple. I received a miso soup that was excellent, tasted fresh and was not too salty. The gyoza's were really tasty they were cooked to perfection and had a nice flavor to them. The crunch roll came out first and was good, nice and tight, didn't fall apart and the shrimp tasted fresh. I decided to stop in because it's right next to my work & it seemed like service would be quick. Prices are about average with a bento/lunch coming at between $13-16 during the weekend/outside of "lunch special" hours. I decided one the salmon teriyaki bento (4 cali rolls, 2 decent size bits of salmon, ~1/2 cup white rice, assorted tempura, and a salad) and a separate order of spicy tuna rolls. The salad was decent sized with a light, citrusy sauce while the tempura was very heavy. In fact, the tempura tasted like they used a funnel cake or donut batter for frying rather than the light and airy Japanese tempura batter. It's quite unfortunate that they did that as the vegetables inside were quite tasty. Sadly, it was a 1:3 ratio of vegetables/shrimp to batter -- completely negating the light flavor of the veggies. Otherwise, the salmon had a good texture (wasn't over or undercooked) but the teriyaki sauce was lacking; it was runny and as a result the salmon didn't really absorb any of the flavor. Spicy tuna was spicy so there's that. Caution to those that can't handle spice. For the California roll, it was pretty standard erring on the side of "creamy". Their rolls could stand more hard/crunchy veg in them (cucumber for example) for texture's sake. Rice was slightly overdone/mushy. I would come here again, however only for the lunch special and would likely sub. the tempura for something else if possible. read more

The first time I went to joy was the first time I ever had sushi. It was EXCELLENT I loved the rattlesnake roll, my favorite. I am also addicted to sushi and Joy sushi is were I go. Also, every time I go I get a different dish, but every time I do go I always have to get the rattlesnake roll. The employees are so sweet to their customers. The know me already lol. They know I always get a raspberry ice tea and that I always have to have rattlesnake roll. That shows me they care about their customers. The chefs are also nice and the dishes they make, A+. Last night i used the online ordering for Joy Sushi and the "pick up" option. The message from the app said the order would be ready in 20 minutes. Unfortunately it was more like an order. So why did i give the restaurant 5 stars? The food was DELICIOUS and plentiful. I ordered myself a "Washington Roll" and the salmon was cut thickly .. very tasty. I called and placed the order and they told me it'll be about 15 to 20 mins. I walked in at the 20min mark and it was ready to go. Quick and efficient checkout which I liked. I ordered the firecracker roll and the salmon tempura roll which were both delightful and tasty. The staff was friendly and greeted me as I walked in and thanked me as I walked out. This is definitely a place I'd come back to if I'm ever in the area again and hungry. read more

Just spent $60 on sashimi. I'm allergic to sesame seeds, so naturally, I'm ignored by most sushi places when I ask for no sesame. This place is no different. The first three dishes looked amazing, though covered in death seeds. We point out the mistake, and of course, we got the same confused shoulder shrug I always get. After sending back the gorgeous plates of fish, I informed my table that we are about to receive a world of crap food because we sent back all three orders of very expensive fish. Definitely wasn't shocked to receive the worst, most painful sashimi dishes ever served in return. Dry, gross, almost unguessable fish that frankly, no one at the table knew what the hell it was.
