i went with a group of friends here. there were eight of us. the place was packed, and they ended up taking us upstairs. we asked for seperate bills, and they said they'd accommodate. we all ordered our drinks and food after 20 minutes of waiting. they got half the orders in first, but the second half took another 20-30 minutes. i got the tofu thai basil chow fuun. it was okay. the tofu was dry and the aftertaste was a bit too herbal. the crab ragoons were pretty good, i shared with one of my friends. it ended up being $30 for just noodles and a soda. a bit expensive if you ask me. read more

This time it was fresh mango papaya with basil seeds (Five stars on drinks). I ordered takeout, seafood chow mein and beef cube tomato rice. The chow mein did not blow me away as I wanted more pieces of seafood and it did not have shrimp. The later is a comfort food dish. It was delicious albeit on the greasy side. This place has the worst boba I've had so far in Chicago. I got a little shock when I took a large sip, and immediately what I felt in my mouth was a big glob of unmixed syrup. Then I looked at my drink and realized that it seemed like my drink hadn't been mixed properly because there was so much syrup stuck at the bottom. read more

Joy Yee's is an intriguing paradox...we've gone for smoothies so often that we sometimes forget the food is pretty good here too. The Chinatown one is surrounded by great restaurants so it often ends up just being a drink stop, but with this one not too far from home we came for dinner the other night. We only got a couple things this visit, the classic beef cubes in tomato rice and beef chow fun. The cubes were super flavorful, in a slightly sweet and tangy sauce that us and the baby really loved. The chow fun noodles helped us hit our veggie quota for the day, though you need to mix it up a bit to get the sauce to coat the noodles. The menu is huge and an amalgamation of different Asian cuisines, but I've never really had a miss coming here or their other locations The staff was friendly and accommodated our baby well too. Went here on a weeknight and service was very fast. Received my order in about 10-15 minutes. The eel with beef cubes and tomato rice was very savory. The portion of eel was big and soft. As I've mentioned in other reviews, my Chinese takeout is limited to the Americanized options. I haven't explored much beyond the stuff I grew up eating. I plan to change that up soon. Joy Yee has a few locations around Chicago and I find them to be pretty consistent. ..both in food quality and inconsistent friendliness. Lbvs. The Orange Chicken is my tried and true go to dish. I like this location far more than their Chinatown location. It could be that this location is newer, but the quality and flavors seem to be better? I've only ordered delivery a couple times, but I'm glad this is closer to me than Chinatown. They were nice enough to call to lmk they didn't have something and ask what I'd want instead. Japanese Tofu with 2 Mushrooms and Basil String Beans & Tofu were good but a tad too saucy and salty. Governor's Chicken was sweet, not spicy, and I would've liked the breading to be crispy. Great combo lunch portions- comes with soup and egg roll. I was disappointed with the Thai Spicy Basil Chow Fun- tasted no different than a regular Chow Fun. Hot and Sour Soup was as expected in taste but too much soup- I would've liked more egg, wood ear mushrooms, bamboo shoots, etc. The Vietnamese Fried Pork Egg Rolls were better than most- I believe they have taro inside! Wow what a surprise to find this mini location! Was looking for a last minute place to eat close by that wasn't fast food and remembered a friend telling me this just opened. Same old Joy Yees. Same old delicious Pan Asian Cuisine. I had to get my favorite dish here, the Korean BBQ short ribs over rice. Just something about the way its seasoned never gets old. I've been having this dish for over 20 yrs now and it's still one of my favorites. Tenderly cooked and just bursting with flavor. Also had a taste of the kimchee fried rice and that was tasty as well. Inside, it's not as big as the one on Halsted. So not good for large groups. Our party consisted of 3 adults and 2 kids so we were fine. Also the fact that it was an hour away from closing and no one was in there dining in helped too. This location probably sits about 15 to 20 and anymore than that would be too much. They have the full menu for food available along with all the smoothies and Boba you could want. I will definitely be back. This location is a lot closer to me than all their other ones so I expect to be frequenting here a lot. read more

Spicy garlic chicken was neither spicy nor had garlic and was extremely sweet. Fast forward to 2023 with so many other options on the Northside (Tsaocaa, Hello Jasmine, etc etc) and sadly Joy Yee just can't compete. Today we ordered brown sugar and oolong milk tea, both with less sugar and what I got is diabetes in cup with hard boba pearls. The previous restaurant in this location, Silver Plate, was a joy to have and when it was hit hard by the pandemic, I honestly felt so sad as there aren't many great pan-Asian choices in the Roscoe Village area as accessible as Silver Plate was. A few months ago, when I saw that they had installed Joy-Yee signs to replace the Silver Plate signs... I felt joy again! (no pun intended) Joy-Yee is a bit of a journey for me to go to, so I really only go there whenever I'm in the area of one of its locations. Evanston is pretty far north from me, and Chinatown/UIC are pretty far south. Those aren't distances I'm willing to drive to just grab a quick dinner, so having a Joy-Yee within walking distance is so great to have. I'm a basic Filipino boy and almost refuse to get anything else except the tomato beef cubes. As someone that absolutely hates raw tomatoes... this dish is fire and just as quality as it is at any of the other locations. Can't complain. Something I was surprised by was their garlic noodles. There was a picture of a dish with garlic noodles and the noodles looked so good that I asked the waiter if I could just try the noodles by themselves, even though that option wasn't on the menu. The waiter understood and got me exactly what I wanted: literally just a plain plate of garlic noodles. Props to him for knowing how to denote something that wasn't technically on the menu, and also, props to the chef because the garlic noodles are FANTASTIC. If I had to venture out of my comfort zone with a different dish, I'll probably try something with those garlic noodles next time. In terms of their colossal drink menu, it's so expansive that I honestly haven't really found anything I've liked in the 10+ years I've been going to any Joy-Yee's location. This location is no exception; I've tried maybe like 3-4 different drinks here and they're all adequate but nothing too special to me. Service is pretty good; in the beginning there was a waitress that needed us to point out every single item we were ordering on the menu so she could write down the code. I definitely don't expect new waiters to memorize every single menu item, but it was a bit frustrating having to comb through the menu to re-find the items I wanted instead of the waitress just writing down the order we provided to her. I have not seen that waitress since, so I'm not sure if she's still employed there or not, but just something to look out for. It has also been several months so if she is still there, I'm willing to have faith that she's memorized the menu a bit better. As others have mentioned, seating area is pretty small so takeout is this location's forte. However, my girlfriend and I have dined in several times with no issue, and because most people get takeout here, it's never really crowded. Joy Yee is a very welcome addition to Roscoe Village, and although I miss Silver Plate very much, I think Joy Yee is a worthy replacement, and I hope at least that they retained some of the staff from Silver Plate. read more

I've been going to Joy Yee locations for a surprisingly long time-- pretty much as long as I've lived in Chicago, I've been eating at a Joy Yee. When I saw this one open right by the pet store I find myself at way too frequently these days, I got excited. I am just not up in Evanston or down in the Chinatown much these days (thanks Covid!) First, if you already enjoy things you'd normally get at Joy Yee you can just stop reading right now. The menu is the same and it tastes the way I remember it tasting. Joy Yee has a War and Peace-sized menu of American "pan-Asian" entrees if you haven't been. The drink (non-alcoholic) menu of milk teas and boba teas is extensive and they are bright and colorful so I end up ordering them more often than not but in truth, I couldn't tell you a single flavor I ever had. They are pretty sweet (or maybe I just pick sweet options. That sounds like me) For food-- my dining companion always gets the Korean short ribs and seems to enjoy them. I hop around a little more than them. The fried rice is always presented in such an impressive display but I tend to find it lacking a little in flavor. Finally-- your food is going to come up in a big overside container. Fried rice inside a pineapple, a giant boat of orange chicken, etc. if you are someone who finds food presentation like that unappealing I'd recommend eating elsewhere. So happy there is a Joy Yee branch closer to our place! We went to sit and eat the other night, and we were the only ones dining in at the time (around 7pm). I think most people pick up from here, since it's pretty small. There are maybe 6-8 tables. The smoothies were FANTASTIC- they are pretty similar to the original location. The boba consistency was perfect. We also ordered two dishes- beef cubes over tomato rice (always a classic) and beef chow fun. Both were pleasantly delicious- definitely exceeded our expectations! I was in love with this location the first time I ordered it was short lived. The first time I order it was great. I got the garlic shrimp udon noodles. Shrimp cooked perfectly and udon noodles were perfect texture. I ordered again I get pad Thai/spaghetti noodles. I think well maybe they're out. The shrimp were also battered and gummy. I try it again and I still don't get udon. I call the restaurant to say hey this is the second time I didn't receive what I ordered and they said just ordered different kind of udon noodles What? Like I don't know what actual udon noodles are. I've ordered at least 4 times but that 2 the food I received tasted like TRASH. I don't recommend. Add photo of noodles I got and actual udon noodles. Ordered from Uber Eats and was surprised to see a new location in Roscoe Village. Prices aren't as cheap as I remember for Joy Yee but still great to have a location here. The food and portions are great! We ordered the Fried Japanese Tofu with Mushrooms, Spicy Tofu Soup, Hot and Sour Soup, and Beef Cubes in Tomato Fried Rice. The last item is a classic thing to order at Joy Yee. I wish it had a bit more egg and the rice was a bit more tomato-y, but still so good. My god was this bad. If you like the food here, you might be missing tastebuds. Seriously, I'm worried about you. My Scandinavian husband whose favorite meal is store bought gnocchi with shredded Kraft "mexican" cheese and garlic powder even thought this was bland. Hate to trash a place but people need to know! lol - The chicken and pork fried dumplings were that cheap dough you find everywhere and totally unsatisfying. - Every noodle dish tastes the same- like old oil and no additional flavoring. - The chow fun noodles came separate from the generic brown sauce which always makes for an exceptionally bland and unsatisfying meal. I was so excited to see a Joy Yee opening up near me! Going to school in Evanston, Joy Yee was a staple among the college kids at Northwestern so they will always have a special place in my heart. I've gotten takeout from here once, and also stopped by another time to get just their drinks. If you're familiar with Joy Yee, you know that they have an extremely extensive food and drink menu. Beef cubes is always our go-to and this location did not disappoint. We've tried their fruit freezes, and their coconut dessert drinks with sago and all were as good as any of their other locations.
