Dim sum galore! Chicago daughter and I were looking for something interesting for breakfast/lunch - but didn't want brunch. We landed on dim sum and found ourselves at Furama. Setting the stage: It was 11:00 am or so on a Saturday. The bigger room up front was closed off for an event so we were directed to the back room. I'm not gonna lie: it gave off vintage high school cafeteria or church bingo vibes, with the vinyl floor and basic 1950s tables covered with layers of disposable paper/plastic table covers. We and 2 other groups sat at 3 of 20 or so tables. There was no wait for the goodies: carts immediately came our way before we even had our coats off. We chose 4-5 things from 4 different carts before waving off carts so we could settle in, have a sip of oolong tea and ready our chop sticks. The aging decor ("vintage") had me worried but the dim sum was good. In all, we had pork buns, sui mai, shrimp balls, chow fun, taro dumplings, cucumbers, eggs tarts, crab rangoons - all delicious! It was a lot but we wanted to taste so many things! I wouldn't call it gourmet quality but it was solid, standard dim sum. What elevated this to 4 stars was the service: super pleasant servers wheeling the carts around and keeping our water glasses filled. They were prompt and watching if we wanted another cart to come around. After that first rush, they were not pushy just showing their wares and then letting us enjoy them. Seems like a popular place because the tables were filled up by the time we left. It's upstairs (elevator if you want it). Solid dimsum spot in Uptown. Dimsum places that have the carts coming to you are becoming more and more rare, so it was nostalgic to experience that here. Food was overall on par for dimsum. My favorites were the bokchoy (the seasoning/toppings had a nice crunch and sweet hint), shrimp cheung fun, and turnip cake. The service was really hospitable and efficient. We were checked up on frequently and the folks coming around with the carts were very friendly. Located on the second floor and really spacious. Definitely worth a try! read more

Furama has been a staple in the area for a long time. My wife grew up eating here with her family and I was excited to visit and eat with them. It's a classic mom and pops feel to a dim sum spot in Argyle/Uptown area. No flashy decor, just sit down, order, and the servers bring you food on their dim sum carts, it was really chill and great vibes to be with the family. Food was so good and filling. Not pictured but we even got 2nd rounds of each thing besides the beef with broccoli considering that was shared at the table. Will definitely come back it's great visiting and they have parking! Had a reservation for 7:30, not that it was needed the place had plenty of seating and sat us right away! We placed our order of various Dim Sum plates and everything came out in rolling order basically immediately! The food was great but nothing really stuck out to me, I would personally stay away from the short ribs as they were chewy/gummy and didn't have a crisp to them. There were some items we ordered that they no longer had because it was close to the end of service, we weren't sure or able to keep up with what we had ordered vs what had been brought out so we had to ask the waitress and that's when she told us some of our dishes were out of stock. Our go to dim sum place in Chicago (though we haven't tried many other places). Everything is very tasty though. Some of our favorites: shrimp dumpling, bbq pork dumpling, beef noodles. However anything you get is gonna be good. The service for us has been a bit slow but nothing crazy, the wait staff are all very friendly and it's always a nice experience. Complimentary jasmine tea every time which is always a big win for me. We went to drag dim sum brunch before! Dim sum and drag queens is a combination I'd never tried before but if that's your thing it's pretty cool! And prices are very affordable considering how much food we always end up ordering. Excellent service today courtesy of John T 081025. He gave me a fork without asking, when I was struggling. It's always neat when they walk around with the tray carts that have the food on them and you just get to pick which one you like that's what is about. The quality shines thru in every dish but shout outs to the roast duck, salt and pepper squid and shrimp, tofu, shrimp and pork turnovers. I've lived in this neighborhood for over 3 years and finally made my way here. I always avoided it because of the subpar reviews and now it all makes sense. We ordered 3 different smaller plates such as pork siu mai, some dim sum shrimp dumplings, and something else. Those were ok, but nothing too flavorful. What really turned me off from this place was the House Special Crispy Chicken (half) that we ordered as it was some of the driest chicken I've had in a while. No flavor whatsoever. We also got the honey beef short ribs and it truly didn't have much flavor either. Very disappointing experience to say the least. Service was a bit spotty on a Tuesday night. Unsure if I'd return. Foods are overall ok, but pricy. They have some unique dim sum items that you don't see other places. The shrimp toast was definitely more shrimp than toast, but quite oily. The crab claw was kinda deceptive, in the picture says $8 and it shows two, but when you get it, it's only one. So it's actually one claw for $8 and two for $16. Pretty expensive if you ask me. Even $8 for two seem expensive, and the crab claw is tiny, most of it just shrimp. The pan fried rice noodle with beef is not bad but a bit lacking in flavor compared to other canto places. Everything is not mindblowing but not the worst either, and I think the serving size is on the smaller end compared with other places. When we went, it was only non-Asians eating there so I think that tells you something. Also even with not a lot of customers, the foods took quite a while. Good place to satisfy a dim sum craving that's comparable to some of the other popular Chinatown places but a little more spacious with more attentive service. The exterior is very unassuming but inside the restaurant is pretty large and full of classic, old school Chinese banquet and dim sum restaurant decor. We've only been here for dim sum and I'm glad they still bring the carts around, and not just the basic stuff but the real deal full dim sum menu: there's dumplings, rice crepes, mini plates of roast meats, congee, fried taro or turnip rice cakes, sticky rice in lotus leaf, desserts including tofu pudding, and even my favorite - crispy fried taro puff dumplings. When we got seats, the servers were attentive and the carts made sure to stop by our table so we had a chance to order basically anything we wanted without having to wait too long; additionally, there is a paper menu with pictures so you can write or show them what else you want to order, and they'll make it happen. Most things here hit the spot, the shrimp dumplings were pretty big, the rice crepes were nice although could've used a bit more sweet soy sauce, and the pan fried taro cake tasted especially fresh with a nice seared exterior and a bouncy light inside. I did get the sticky rice with Chinese sausage which looked great but was kind of lacking in flavor. Overall though, good spot for reliable classic dim sum and Chinese fare. read more

This was my first time doing takeout for dim sum. I've always dined in, but it actually wasn't a bad experience at all. I did an online order and it was ready before the promised time. They have a huge dining space. And you have to walk all the way upstairs for your pick up order. Unfortunately this place was pretty much completely empty at 6PM on a Friday night. The staff wasn't very friendly either. No smile, and I'm not even sure he thanked me after handing me my order. But the food was delicious! I ordered pot stickers, BBQ Pork rice noodle roll, short ribs w/ black pepper, sweet fried rice, two orders of their BBQ pork bun and a small order of chicken fried rice. Was in last week for the Pokemon Dim Sum and Drag brunch and had a great time! All of the queens were amazing, and it was a super high-energy and slay show. However, I did have some issues with everything else. Starting with table logistics, my group of 8 was seated with a few randoms who did not match our energy, which was fine, but a little bit awkward. The food is fine and actually very good by drag brunch standards (iykyk), but like it's not the best dim sum I've ever had, and to be honest, because it's served buffet style, it isn't hot, and the textures are a bit mushy. Also, you don't make your own plate, there is an assembly line of folks giving you super small portions. You can go up multiple times, but it's definitely a strange choice. Additionally, drinks are not included in the price of the ticket, and they are a little bit pricey... however, they are LOADED, so you will get drunk. It's a good place to visit for first time Dim Sum-ers. It's less chaotic than many places I've gone and the food options are less extensive and "strange" than other places. That being said the food I felt like was more basic and was lacking in a lot of delicious dim sum cuisine. The waiters were still pushy and didn't understand English all that well so sometimes it was hard to communicate what you wanted and what you didn't, but they would respect your wishes if you said no. The interior is nice, not overly fancy with nice Chinese decorations and a stage for the performances they sometimes host. Furama has been a long standing Chinese restaurant near the argyle area. It used to be much bigger with dim sum offered on the first floor and overflow to the second floor. It is now just limited to the second floor although the area is more than enough to hold their guests. The place has a run down look, not much to say about the ambience and the restroom is limited compared to the guests they can house. But the food! This is one of the few remaining restaurants that still have dim sum being served and rolled out in carts. Staff is friendly and shout out to their managers as they've always been helpful in case of questions. Their dim sum is delicious and pretty consistent on their flavors - yummy goodness flavors! You can also order from their menu which I would recommend as a supplement to your dim sum, especially if you have a large group. They have a parking lot adjacent to the building although they charge $3.25 for it. Used to be free with token from them then $2 then now $3.25. They also charge for tea. Took my parents here for lunch today and the total was $112, we paid $135 total in cash but the waitress grabbed the money and rudely yelled "why only give a few dollars? I work for tip!!?" I told her to count again and she was like oh sorry. That was so incredibly rude and there were people sitting nearby looking over as though we're cheap. It was busy today so the service was subpar and my dad's water glass still had lipstick stain on it from the last diner but we still tipped 20%. I will never ever go back to this place again. There are other options for dim sum in Chicago so save yourself the trouble and try somewhere else. It's my first time going here. The location is very nice. They even have a stage for entertainment. I like the way they serve us as they bring food carts to our table. Furama is a restaurant that has been around since 1985, that I've visited from time to time over the decades. It features push cart dim sum that's served quickly and easy to see over different levels of each cart and friendly servers who will help you find what you need. This is all served in a large spacious dining room where you can smell the aromas of nearby food and enjoy the atmosphere of others enjoying their dim sum as well nearby. With that said, this restaurant feels a bit dated at this point. The restaurant setup and decoration probably support an easy to clean and efficient operation, but others have matched this while supporting updated interiors all across Chicagoland. The food quality I feel has also suffered a bit, with the items that I tried overall not being as impressive as I'd had before. The shrimp and beef crepes don't really have a silky texture anymore, the fried items like shrimp roll and japanese tofu feel a bit more greasy than crispy, and the meat fillings don't really draw out an intense level of savory flavor anymore. In addition, the items on the food carts feel like they're served luke-warm instead of piping hot. Though the execution of food preparation doesn't feel as good as newer competitors, the food itself is still enjoyable and there's a wide variety of items to choose from. The restaurant itself is also generally not as full as other competitors so it's not difficult to bring larger groups here. In the weekends there are dim sum carts, which you don't see anymore (don't expect carts during the week). They have everything dim sum dish you could want and all they all come out quick. Came in here a few months ago and had the best orange chicken of my life. However I've gotten takeout from here 4-5 times over the last few Minaj and it was very disappointing. The large size (20 dollars) was barely higher than the small and was way overpriced. The chicken I've gotten for takeout also had no breading, it's like poached/boiled chicken with sauce on it? The soup dumplings had ZERO soup... the dumpling contents was piping hot but the skin was chewy and tough, which made me wonder if they'd been reheated. The pork siu mai looked like meat but didn't taste like meat. Not sure why. The shrimp dumplings were good but they were all stuck to the bottom of the metal dish. Went for dim sum (of course!) the Saturday at 3 pm with daughter and baby granddaughter, daughter's friend and her toddler son, and another young couple. Lot parking was free for 3 hrs when you have the restaurant stamp the receipt from the parking lot. No carts- I think because we were there at an odd time. Restaurant was nearly empty. Service was good. Food was very good. Sorry no photos and we had a variety of dishes - all were good. They were very kind and put up with a toddler running around and a baby making quite the mess. But wanted to write a special review - because last Monday we had a birthday party here for 21 people - and the way FUrama hosted us was just awesome. They let us even bring our own cake in, and they set a small table nearby us for gifts. They didn't rush us and were super friendly and accommodating at all turns.
