I adopted from Joyful Rescues and had a seamless adoption. I am very grateful they are cautious about who adopts these homeless animals!

I went today to look into adopting a dog. The hours it opened on line (8:30am) were false, it…read moreopens at 11:30am each day. Also, the people were very friendly. Amy spent lots of time with me and every employee or volunteer I met with were happy and engaging people. They welcomed me to have ample play time with two different dogs, in a large room with toys and treats - as well as allowed me to walk both dogs outside. They offered to bring out more dogs but I declined, as I now know it will be necessary for me to first put in a fence around my yard before adopting a dog. Both of these were smaller dogs, but vey energetic jack russell terrier breed types. Also very affectionate and playful, convincing me that the animals here are treated with kindness and love. Not a shred of aggressivenness or fear in either of these dogs. No longer having my cavapoo Charlie who successfully saw me through cancer treatments, I was looking for a similar dog. There will be an adjustment period if I select one of the two dogs (Lara or Amona?) I saw today. lot's to consider, but not regarding this SPCA facility that in my eyes is very well run by people that care.

They have a wonderful selection of pets, but unfortunately the staff is so busy they come across as…read moreRUDE. They don't care either, they have a "deal with it" type attitude. This alone will drive people away, but THEY DON'T CARE. They will not return phone calls and they will deny you if you haven't taken your pets to the vet every year for shots, etc. We live in an area where kittens are dropped off all the time. We always take them in and get their first shots, as well as spaying and neutering. But because Mom is on a fixed income, and at least two of our cats are feral, trying to get them to the vet regularly can be a challenge. Yet we were disapproved because of this. They want perfect adopters and that is sad. I'm sure they're a great place but I just wish they weren't quite so strict. They are so busy looking for the right adopter that they overlook people who don't regularly take their pets to the vet who could provide a loving home. (for anyone who thinks we don't care about our pets, if we didn't we wouldn't try to save as many as we could that come to our door. Just because you don't bring your pet to the vet every year doesn't make you a negligent person.) Maybe your staff should reconsider their manners when dealing with potential adopters. Keep your rude attitudes to yourselves!

Niagara Falls Humane Society - There's a hole off to the right out of the frame, so these cats are free to roam.

Please note: this is in the Niagara Centre Mall, NOT 6025 Chippawa Pkwy. Yelp insists on lumping…read morethe locations together. My friend and I stumbled upon this fantastic cat adoption centre in the otherwise dead mall that is Niagara Centre. In the front area, they stock odds and ends (water bottles, t-shirts, etc) to raise proceeds for their efforts. The back of the store is the really impressive part; it's divided by a floor-to-ceiling chain link fence with a gate, and they have dozens of cats wandering free. The area is the size of a large living room, and it's filled with all sort of furniture for the cats to climb/sleep on, as well as toys. There's an area in the very back marked "employees only" where the cats are free to retreat to if they need the litter box, food, or just a quiet place to hide. The employees are happy to let anyone in with the cats to visit, and you're free to pet or play with them, or just let them come to you. It's a great setup, almost like a cat cafe, where you can get to know your future pet on their home turf. No cages, so the cats aren't stressed out. One cat in particular approached us for attention, and we happily petted her and fed her some treats while she purred non-stop. The other cats casually strolled around or slept, not bothered by us in the slightest. I only wish I lived nearby, because I'd love to visit all the time. It's probably for the best, since I'd want to take all of the cats home.

NOT RECOMMENDED! Went there with my wife and family for a…read moresurprise for mother's day gift. Since we adopted two brothers last year from them. This time, the service and attitude from the older volunteer staff was very rude and challenging. After we expressed which cat we're interested in and then said that she's bonded with another, so we would have to get both. They asked how many cats we have (understandable question), I replied the two brothers. My son has one (unrelated from the brothers) and will be moving out this summer. The older volunteer staff then stated, "well maybe you should wait and see what happens" with her attitude... What does that mean!? Who the hell are they to tell me what's best for my family! So we left with a disappointed wife. One thing is for sure, they did not like me asking questions about any treatments, diseases or medical conditions on record. The living conditions is subpar. It is filthy, smells horrible and I would question if there are too many animals inside that small building. Maybe the Human Society of Greater Niagara or Niagara SPCA or even the Town of Pendleton should be contacted to check on things...

Not that it was off the table just that it's not typical for us. There was no discussion it was an automatic decline and my daughter was devastated. I was so sad for her and the cat. I have owned cats for over 20 years and worked in the vet industry for over 6 years. I am appalled that they didn't trust us and left my daughter crying. To say we were approved and then to deny us when we showed up was absolutely cruel and they should be ashamed of themselves. This is not how a rescue operation should run and I will absolutely never support them again.
