Called to get an estimate on having a beehive removed and they wanted to sell me the farm . No thank you!

I have used JP McHale for many problems, most recently cicada killers which are resistent and so hard to control. They are controlling them and we are winning the battle with them! I LOVE JP McHale, they are reliable, friendly, and when we have had problems which were not easily solved, managers came to inspect and devise a plan to fix the problem, which was always successful!! read more

My experience with JP McHale, unfortunately, has left much to be desired. I initially began my service contract with them in the winter, and they came to the house to tend to an ant issue within a two day window. It was great. They were knowledgeable, attentive.. took care of the problem. But then the spring came. I had carpenter ants in my kitchen. Called... and needed to wait three weeks before someone could come out to the house. Yes- after paying upwards of $700 for an annual contract- I was now expected to wait three weeks for someone to come address my ant problem. When I questioned this, as I wasn't happy begging expected to "live with" carpenter ants in my kitchen while I waited 21 days for a service technician to come, I was told that it was their busy season and that's the best they could do. Fast forward to the beginning of June, when I called about flying ants in my laundry room. Lots and lots of gross flying ants. I was told, again, that it would be a two week waiting time before someone could come. Then- that day- (I called on 6/2 and someone was supposed to be coming on 6/14) I received a text message saying that the technician had to cancel. When I called the next day to reschedule the appointment, the next available date I was given was 7/6! Yes- I was now expected to wait FIVE WEEKS in order for a technician to come to my home to address my flying ant situation. So, what I learned from being tricked into a service contract with JP Hale is that they are quick to come out before you sign up/pay $700. But once they have your money, you are then nothing to them. How they consider this at all acceptable is beyond my understanding. We will not be signing up again once this contract runs out, as the two recent times we needed the service, we had to remedy the problems ourselves before they could get a technician to come to the home. What's the point of having a service contract if they do not come in time to help service the problem? read more

Ineffective, overpriced, and slightly shady. Buyer beware. We recently moved to Westchester and signed an annual contract with JP Mchale because they seemed like a community staple. Little did we know that they were under new management and that the service had gone down by a mile. Two different service reps gave us conflicting advice on how to tackle the mouse in our attic and tried to charge us $3,000 for a service that should have been covered by our annual contract. We ultimately hired a different provider who handled our mice (and flying squirrels - who knew they liked attics?) efficiently and cost-effectively. They sprayed for ticks one weekend, and then my husband noticed a tick on him after going outside the following weekend. We had them spray for spiders numerous times only to see no effect. When we finally got fed up 4 months in, and switched to a different pest management company that could actually, I don't know, manage our pests, we requested a refund for the 8 months we wouldn't be using and a manager told us: "Due to amount of times you had service with the pest plan, there is no refund for early cancellation (sic)." I am livid. We are first time homeowners and had the wool pulled over our eyes by what we thought was a reputable company. Never again. read more

You should be aware of McHale's time-wasting customer service. We have been a McHale residential customer since Feb. 24, 2017, and our first service visit was April 3. The follow-up visit was scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon on April 24, but no one showed up. It turns out the follow-up visit had incorrectly been scheduled for May 24. Since signing a contract on Feb. 24, I have called McHale twice. On March 28, I waited seven-plus minutes to speak to a real person. On April 24, I waited nine-plus minutes to speak to a real person and ask why a technician hadn't shown up between 8 a.m. and noon, as promised. This would appear to be classic under-staffing that utilizes the time of customers to fatten the profit margins of James P. McHale Jr., the owner and chief executive officer. Instead of bombarding customers waiting on a phone line with breathless announcements of the hot-shot scientific treatments McHale offers, the company should be working on mastering the basics of handling customer appointments and calls. Actually, they clearly do know how to use the phones. During the weeks I was mulling a McHale contract, a representative called me close to a half dozen times to press me to sign it. read more

Like most of the reviews here, our only complaint about this company is that we didn't begin using them sooner. We were a bit concerned about bug and pest activity and phoned McHale for an inspection. Pete, the Inspector, actually arrived early for our appointment and was extremely thorough in his exam and very polite, knowledgeable, and professional. We purchased a yearly service agreement at a very reasonable price. Milton, the technician, arrived a few days later, and again, displayed a great deal of knowledge, concern, and professionalism. This is a top-notch company worthy of a 5 star rating. Even if you're interested in just preventative maintenance (as we were), this is a highly recommended operation. Residential Service Agreement for one year, from 6 September 2012 - 5 September 2013. JP McHale extended the contract to 5 December 2013 because they did not provide the agreed upon services during the year. We hired JP McHale based on a neighbor's recommendation. We signed up for their Termite Indicator Program and their Home Pest Prevention Program, which included "one year on-call unlimited call backs, as needed." Their first visit was 7 Sept 2012 between 11 AM - 2 PM. According to their service contract: "This annual service program provides tri-annual visits to your home. Applications are timed such that they occur when the target pest is most vulnerable." According to our records they only came that one time without us having to call them to schedule an appointment, which was included in the price of our contract. So much for them timing the applications. As a result, we had more stink bugs in our home that expected. As I explained to Eric Welch of JP McHale, when i hire a company to handle one of the many household chores, I expect to not have to micro-manage the contractor. Unfortunately, that was not the case with JP McHale. Perhaps they are too busy to schedule appointments for all their annual Home Pest Prevention Program customers? Whatever the case, I just do not believe they will take care of the requisite applications on a timely basis, again quoting their agreement, "such that they occur when the target pest is most vulnerable." We are looking for a new provider for 2014. read more

Had a service contract with JP McHale for a few years without much of a problem other than an occasional scheduling conflict. I decided to take precautionary measures for termites after it had become known there was activity prior to purchasing the home. I decided to purchase a monitoring system on the field techs suggestion. It was my understanding that a "monitoring system" was to monitor any activity in the attempt to prevent the termites from entering the home. After all the contract does say "these stations are strategically installed and designed to indicate EARLY STAGES of termite infestation - BEFORE THEY ENTER YOUR HOME". The contract states 3 visits a year. They came for the first visit of the year to spray for standard pest management. A month later it appeared the service didn't do the trick that it had in previous years. I attempted a number of times to make a second appointment. After finally getting an appointment, they never showed. I tried one more time with no success. We had what appeared to be "flying ants" around this time. Months later we had termites chewing through our living room floor. At this time I was told the "flying ants" were "swarmers" (termites). My issue in all of this was the fact that I purchased a system (approx $500 a yr) to monitor any activity to avoid them from entering the home. The system did not work. It's a scam. The company did not offer to compensate me in any way. And only apologized after I pointed out that they didn't have the decency to do so right away. They didn't take any responsibility at all. The tick control service is okay but I didn't see that they eliminated pesky mosquitoes. The problem is the service with their CSR's. Re: Pest Management Originally, Eric Welch was unresponsive so then dealt with the Supervisor, Tanya (?; not sure of her name as she didn't email me her contact info as I asked) but she didn't respond to me a few months later so I called Rich McHale who upgraded me to their VIP CSR, Mickey Morello who was fine initially but did not respond to my email concern that their crew came out in mid November for their last spray despite it being cancelled twice! He knows I'm unhappy as he did not bother to contact me this year to re-start my tick control program which is fine with me but I want Rich McHale to know this as I am more than happy to give my business to someone else, like Garrie Pest Control. So much for VIP treatment. Re: Landscaping work Rep Bruce Peterson came out to look at my lawn and he came back with a $800 estimate to remove a 12' tall Apple tree saying that since he didn't have a grinding tool, it would take 2 guys all day to remove. I hired another local Landscaping company and it took their 2 guys 50 minutes just using shovels. I asked Bruce how he can charge so much. His answer was that since it's not his specialty, their prices would be higher. W**?! One pays more for expertise and less if they don't have the specialty skill. I wonder if he understands the absurdity of his rationale. I wonder if I would have been stuck with the $800 charge if I had used Bruce and was not home not knowing how long it actually took to remove that tree. My experience with contractors is that they will give a low and high range quote but the customer will always wind up paying the upper end. Re: Insulation work Also, I used their sister company, Enviracare, which does insulation but would not recommend because they are not NYSERDA certified (I only discovered this after the work was done) so a homeowner will not receive any state subsidies but even if they were, I still wouldn't recommend them to anyone because I found the rep, Chris Puleo, who's also a junior partner to be too aggressive and at times condescending. I had questions on the borate cellulose material and the work being done and it feels as if he's attacking you when he talks. The tone on his voice was never welcoming. It was as if I was bothering him and I felt as if I was being scolded. He has very in-your-face personality. I told owner, Rob McHale, about Chris's obnoxious behavior and he laughed it off and said, "...I don't know what you want me to say..." Also, I was initially rejected on the 1 year interest-free financing program. It turned out it was because I had put my rental address instead of the home purchase address but when it was rectified, I asked Envirocare to put the $3K deposit with the entire loan, Chris called me to say it would cause problems; a liability issue. Huh? My gut tells me it was all about money; them not losing any. Recently, in early January '16, I emailed their Marketing Director, Rob Rieger, about having one of their Technicians (other than Chris Puleo) to come back to my house with a thermal imaging camera to see how well of a job Envirocare did with properly insulating my house as one room is still very cold. I had to email Rob again after 3 weeks to get an update and he tells me on 1/27/16 that he would be get back on my scheduling someone to come out and ".. I would appreciate it if you could take your negative review down that is still up on Angie's List as previously discussed." Over a month has passed and I have not heard back as I have not deleted my review and will not as I will not compromise my integrity. I will only update a review once a company rectifies a problem. I guess, this is what Rob means by "mutually beneficial relationship." I wonder how many other negative reviews are missing from Angie's List because of this "arrangement." If you decide to use Envirocare, make sure they come back with a thermal imaging camera to assess their work since the insulation is behind the walls. Keep in mind that Envirocare uses borate cellulose and I heard about other products available in the marketplace. Once the technician actually showed up (no appointment readily available) he seemed annoyed that my problem was bees. Eric on the phone assured me they could eliminate both my ant and bee problem, but the technician said he could do nothing about the bees unless they were ground bees and I could tell him where the nest was. (That's what I hired YOU for!) Technician did eliminate the ants and put a termite thing in the ground, saying he would return in 3 weeks to check it. Still waiting, and that was last May!!! I was away over the holidays and returned to find a note in the door that they had been there and everything was fine -- no sign of any problems. Well, once I got inside, I found my home was INFESTED with mice!!!'' Also, their customer service stinks!!! I must have received 20 calls about renewing my contract. Told her no. Then a different person called every night at around 7:30 for about a week, even after we told her no. Then a man called. What part of "NO" does this company not get??? They are quick to take your money but not so quick to do what you pay them for, and then VERY quick to try to get you to renew! I have had the worst experience working with JP McHales. The customer rep I worked with at the company has been very nice, but I just doubt the technicians knowledge in certain areas (I can only speak to those I have worked with). I've been dealing with an ongoing bed bug problem for over a year now and they continue to charge for treatments when the issue has clearly not been resolved. They have offered their utmost confidence after every treatment that the have taken care of the issue, but 2 months later the bugs are back. It is becoming increasingly frustrating that they take ZERO accountability for their work when it is a hefty price tag associated with their treatments. I would never recommend them, at least for pest control work. It's very unfortunate when you put your trust and money in a company and this type of problem is repeatedly occurring. read more

When we first moved to a suburban house from apartment living in the five boroughs, I called my realtor in a panic "What are those THINGS in the basement with all the legs, and they are sooooo fast". She calmed me down and referred me to JP McHale. Since then, I have learned they are centipedes and I have now had an annual plan with JPMcHale for over a decade. They have helped me through a yellow jacket infestation within my walls, wasp nests in the basketball hoop, an ant trail on the patio, and yes, mice in the garage. But the annual plan also has them out taking preventative measures around our home and that has kept pests in our home at a total minimum; plus when there is an emergency they will be there for you. Staff really explains what they are doing and understands the need to use different materials in homes with dogs and small children. On the single occasion when I wasn't happy with a response I got on the phone, I just called back, got a supervisor, and received immediate service. As for the calls to renew annual contracts??? I LIKE THOSE. Otherwise I would forget and I really don't want any lapses in my professional relationship with this excellent business. read more

I don't trust a service company that doesn't provide service. I paid for an annual contract in November 2011 but no one ever came to my house. I call in July 2012 because my house has bugs. Their customer service confirmed that no one ever came to my house. It's so disappointing because it's common knowledge that bugs emerge in the spring and a house should be protected then...at least it's common knowledge to everyone except to the folks at JP Mchale. we hired JP McHale to radicate a case of bed bugs, that appeared out of no where in our bedroom, but we later put 2 and 2 together, and realized that we bought a mattress from Sleepy's, which was delivered to us, and we are a 100% sure the bed bugs were either on the delivery truck or on the mattress/box spring, but ended up in our home. Hiring JP Mchale to kill the bugs, was successful, not only did they kill the bugs, they killed our HOME also. they used chemical treatments and OVER SPRAYED, or miscalculation of the products that was applied to our home, whatever they did was a nightmare, the smell of the chemicals, got sprayed in our mattresses, box springs, antique couch, got on our crown moldings, baseboard, walls, and now we believe since the odor is still in the house, that it is in our wood floors, and staying there permanently. at the start, McHale, came and tried to remediate, but after 2 months, they gave up, and decided to let their Insurance company handle our home disaster as a liability case, and their insurance company, has been a nightmare, they tried to deny the issue that there is chemical odor in our home, and that we are making things up. It has been a battle since 1/5/2016 till now, we had to throw away, mattresses and box springs, curtains, window shades, because the odor was very sickening to them, they even sprayed the bottom of an antique couch, and the odor got stuck to it badly, so due to the strong odor, we had to put the couch in storage, and we're waiting for their insurance to agree on the price of finding someone to take the couch apart and re-stuff it and upholster it, to treat the odor of the chemical out of it. The insurance company has been nickel and dime us, and not wanting to replace all the damage ,without deducting DEPRECATIONS, all we wanted is our home back to normal. there was no field supervision when the technician came to spray the chemicals, we were under the mercy of the knowledge of the technicians, only after we complained for weeks that there is a strong odor, that they got the supervisor and the owner involved, but without success. So, if you want to kill the bugs and your HOME, Call J P McHale, they get the job done, and turn your life upside down, like the way we have been living for over 7 MONTHS. read more

Update: My complaint was immediately noticed and I was contacted by a customer service manager. She understood all the issues and worked quickly to address and fix them. There has been a big improvement in the quality of their service and I now have visibility to the timeline of periodic services they will offer reminder of this year. This level of commitment to fix the issues has led me to change my mind to offer them 5 stars. read more

we signed on for annual coverage and it has been very disappointing. we called because we had a specific pest issue and they came once and then did not reappear or call for followup as promised. we have had to continually call them to try to eradicate the problem which still exists after a year. each time they send someone new so the treatment is not consistent and it appears they have little sense of accountability as they never check in to see if treatments have worked. it has cost us hundreds of dollars in repairs to damages caused by the pests even with the sporadic treatment of the issue. we have been in touched with the manager but he too has not been accountable to the issue. we are very frustrated as we thought full coverage for a year would include some sense of professionalism and that we would not have to repeatedly chase them for service. read more

Huge waste of $360! Make sure you watch these inspectors like a hawk! I recently called JP McHale for a bed bug inspection because we just moved into this house and noticed bites on our bodies. They sent out a dog and "inspector" to look for bed bugs. The dog never "alerted" but the inspector said we had bed bugs. I asked for some sort of proof-anything at all to confirm HIS hunch we had bedbugs. He tore apart every room looking for anything but didn't come up with even one thing UNTIL I had to attend to my children and he magically pulled from his pocket a dirty piece of tape with a dead and crusty bed bug he "found" under the carpet in my daughter's room! We had just purchased this carpet and put it down only days earlier. He said we "clearly" had bed bugs for some time and although he couldn't produce a single live bug, any bed bug feces or carcasses (other than the one sandwiched in dirty tape). He then went back into the master bedroom and tossed the bed again and "found" another one in between the mattress and the corner protectors. Once again, this was a dead carcass between two pieces of tape he "found" when I turned my back to help my two year old. He claimed we needed to have the house treated as soon as possible and someone would be calling me to make sure we set something up soon. When no one called for several days I called a second company. I never mentioned I had already had the house inspected and waited to see what this person said. He went through my entire house with a dog and with several tools to pick up on any feces or carcasses. NOT ONE BEDBUG OR ALERT! He said he was confident I did not have bed bugs, AND he checked my dog and found he had a few flees and a couple of ticks. He said our bites were likely due to the fact that we let the dog sleep on our feet and the kids cuddle with the dog while watching movies. He recommended we get some good flee and tick repellent for the dog and watch to make sure we don't end up with flees in our house. We immediately treated the dog and VIOLA! No more bites on any of us! read more
