If you want great tasting sushi, it's gonna be overpriced, especially with the current state of affairs. I don't understand why people expect to go out to eat and pay Publix sushi prices. That's not what is served here. I come here frequently with my partner and never dissatisfied. If you're upset about the price point, sign up for their loyalty program and it pays off. I drove from Fort Myers to Sarasota for a doctor's appointment. This was my third visit. I'd noticed this restaurant across the street but I wasn't feeling well enough to give this place a try after my last two visits. Today was the day. I was greeted with extremely warm smiles by everyone and seated promptly. I ordered the Sashimi combo lunch special. Fresh, tasty, and sliced just right. I hate when it's sliced too thick. The Miso soup is by far the best I've had since moving to Florida in FOUR years! The sashimi comes with 2 pieces of sushi. I don't know what it was but it was delicious as well. Well I'm back to my OG #1 favorite soul-warming sushi fusion spot! The little tent card at the bar said "Try Something New!" So I did and was delighted. A complimentary homemade fried wonton noodles with fresh edemame hummus drizzled with chile crunch to start was a light, but delicious and refreshing nibble! I'm told it will be added to the menu soon. I chose the Key West roll (new to me), with a side of ponzu. It was a celebration of all my favorite flavors married together in each bite: sushi rice, cucumber, spicy tuna, topped with torched salmon, lime zest, tobico. Delicious is an understatement. I was visiting a loved one and looking for something to lift their spirits! It's in a plaza and around the corner. It's not even visible from the street. Wow! I'm pretty fussy about my sushi and love my sushi place at home, but this was fabulous. Their black rice sushi was fabulous. We also had pork belly bao that were divine. My husband also had the pork belly bowl with broccoli which was ample in size and wonderfully flavored. The waitress was lovely and helpful and they were very nice accommodating special requests. We had a great time at JPan during our stay in Siesta Key! We were having trouble booking a table anywhere due to being a large party and the busy holiday season. They were able to seat 8 of us together for our meal and the service was great. Super speedy and the fish was fresh. I want to love the sushi and food more as the presentation is wonderful and again the quality is fine, but there is something lacking overall from a flavor profile. Agedashi tofu and the broth is essentially tasteless - it's cooked fine, but they need to try a new batter and again the broth just has no real flavor. I added siracha sauce which was better, but hopefully they can refine it moving ahead. Same for the rolls, it was fine and filling (had 4 different rolls and the Volcano was the best out of all), but just the flavors don't jump out at us. We love sushi and have eaten it all over the US and still haven't found an AMAZING sushi place in Sarasota. JPan is fine and the price is good, but I would pay much more amazing food. read more

I made the drive to Sarasota to check this place out because I heard that they have some basic Korean items on their menu. Plus, I love sushi. The location is hidden in the corner of the shopping center, luckily that is the first side that we drove in and were able to quickly find it. Otherwise, I usually grow impatient and would just drive off and go somewhere else. Since there are now plenty of sushi places to try in Sarasota. Upon walking into any sushi restaurant, I can tell if I am going to order raw fish or not. When entering J-Pan, I chose not to based on the case of fish at the sushi bar. We were there around 6:30 pm on a Wednesday night and there was only one other table seated. By 7:30, it was becoming quite crowded, good for them! I will give them a third star just because they were placing Korean R & B music, which reminds me of all of the Korean dramas that I love so much. The interior colors are black, red, and white- very striking. And, I love the photos on the walls. However, the food was not memorable... We were given free edamame from the chef upon entering, which was a very nice jesture, especially before having to indulge in their food. For our appetizer we had the Agedashi Tofu, the tofu breading was very soft and not crispy. All of the flavors were good, but I do not understand why they put the dashi broth on the side as a dipping sauce rather than putting the tofu in the dashi broth, where you would eat it with a spoon. As a dipping sauce; dashi does not hold it's own and you need more of it to get the flavor with the bite of tofu. I figured that since they are playing Korean music that someone must speak or be Korean, which means that they should know what Korean food tastes like. But, I seriously doubt it based on what they served us. The Chicken Bugogi was supposed to be spicy, but was super sweet and did not even taste like it had any gochujang in it, just a bunch of syrup. I wanted to ask the waitress, "Would you eat this?" I really do not feel that someone should serve you something that they would not find fit to eat. Not only that, but they did not completely rinse their rice so it had a weird chemical taste to it that was mouth numbing. The side veggies were onion, carrot, and broccoli steamed to a mushy consistency. The Beef Ramen ($10), was filled with beef bulgogi to the point where the entire did just became this milky concoction of sugary beef and onion with some noodles floating in it, we could only eat a few bites before getting grossed out. To be honest the taste reminded me of durian, minus the durian smell. The Sarasota Roll contained fried shrimp, then topped with cooked shrimp and avocado. It is really hard to mess up fried shrimp, and the roll was a little wet but decent. The Spicy Tuna Roll was also decent, but I wish there was more rice to fish ratio. I recommend only coming to J-Pan for sushi, because there other dishes really need some repairs. I understand that they have been open for less than a year, so maybe they are still working on a decent menu and food preparation. Hopefully, their food will improve and they will have great success with so much competition in the area. With places like Vizen, I really do not understand why someone would get Japanese food and sushi elsewhere. A table for two and $58.00 later, I feel like I could have spent that money on something much better. read more
