Couple sisters run the place and hands down THE BEST APPLE FRITTERS between the West Coast and The Louisiana Bayou. Not overly sweet, too doughy or skimpy on the apple either! Dosen't sit like a lead brick in your gut like most others. All their dough is light and pastry like, not overly sweet either. I was told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I'm not too much of an early morning person, so the idea of eating in the morning is a foreign concept. However, this advice seem to be important and not being much for rules, opted for bending them with the breakfast of champions, Donuts! I love donuts to a fault and generally I try to follow a strict donut rubric of taste, variety and quality. Visiting JR's you get the hallmarks of your stereotypical donut shop. This isn't a negative just an observation that generally bodes well for what comes next. In the variety department they have all the standard favorites from your old fashioned to your regular chocolate raised. I opted for my standard of pick whatever the hell looks good and make it up as I go. I was happy with my donut choices and life choices and exited with a decent dozen plus some donut holes. Quality wise and taste, they hit my strict rubric of does it taste and look good. The quality seemed good in that it didn't taste like I had day old donuts from a supermarket shelf or some poor supermarket donut stand. The only hit I give on this place is that there wasn't a large variety of what I love to call.... premium donuts. Those donuts which are basically sugary mess of cereal, bacon and all matter of artery clogging goodness (aka also known as heaven in a baked/fried good). The food scene in Sacramento has really gotten better over the years and that also translates to donut quality and variety. Every so often my workplace will get treated to a surprise pink box of donuts either by an appreciating client or a drug representative who rewards us for making good sales. I have tried to make a point of avoiding such treats, but can't help but take a peek in the box just to see what I'm missing. Not always a good idea, because when it comes to donuts, resistance is often futile. However, I am picky as to what I prefer to eat over others, such as the cake donuts. Many times the "pink" boxes are generic and we never know where the goodies came from, but recently I became aware of "JR's Donuts" when I noticed their logo stamped on the box. After opening said box, I was pleasantly surprised to find a nice variety of cake donuts in different flavors and decorated beautifully! This is when resistance immediately disappeared from my conscience. It became a difficult decision to choose, but eventually I took a dark chocolate donut, covered in dark chocolate icing, imbedded with chocolate chips! It was one of the best tasting donuts I have had in a long time! The outer surface had a crisp, baked crust, while the cake inside had a moist goodness that got me savoring every bite. Trying out their other donuts was just as awesome! I normally wouldn't think to write a review on a business that I haven't had the pleasure of visiting as yet. But it's the product that got me inspired to write one anyway. That very first donut got me hooked; now I'm always on the lookout for the pink box that has "JR's Donuts" proudly displayed on its top! I may even make the trip to check this donut shop out in person someday! I just hope I can control myself! read more

Perfect muffin top crunch and soft blueberry stuffed goodness with a soft light fluffiness to hold it in. Got to have the doughnut holes!! I drive by this place every day going to work. It is a small location but has most of the donuts anyone would want. A lot of variety and so much to choose from, if you go in the early morning. By the end of the day they won't have many donuts to choose from. I always get a few dozen doughnut holes to take to work any everyone loves them. They are so soft and fresh that you just can't eat one. The selection @ this donut shop is pretty good. Many varieties of chocolate covered goodies. Of course, the earlier you come, the better. They sell a dozen donuts for $8.00 (about average price of all the donut shops on Elk Grove). They sell a wide variety of drinks and can even make coffee fraps (I haven't tried any yet though). It is run by 3 very courteous and friendly Asian women. Depending on what time you go it can get crowded but the line moves pretty quickly. The only reason I couldn't give them a 5-Star rating is because the first time I used my Credit Card, they did not tell me about the fee they tack on for using a Credit or Debit Card. I only found out after looking at the receipt. Lesson learned, now I just use cash. Would I recommend? Sure. Would I go again? I have many,many times. read more
