They are also good to point out challenges without compromising quality. In our case, we had custom glass that needed to be installed on deck railing. This was a permitted project and the contractor installing the decking and posts was different and we only needed glass from J's. Not only they knew the requirements for glass specs to pass inspection but also when the manufacturer ended up shipping incorrect gaskets, they did not end installing as provided, rather got the manufacturer to send the correct parts. His prices are also very reasonable compared to his competitors. ~~~~~ Like most projects, I started off by requesting quotes (through Yelp) from glass companies in the area. I got responses from a total of 6 companies and ultimately decided to move forward with J's Custom Glass. BREAKDOWN OF QUOTING EXPERIENCE ** J's Custom Glass: Sent quote request on Mon with floor plan and current shower picture and got a response & quote back in 8 minutes. The quote was very simple, he stated that it would be 3/8" clear glass frameless, with either brushed nickel or chrome hardware. He also provided me with a sample picture of what the project would look like. Warranty for labor and material is 1 year. His cost was also the same as the other quotes I got. I asked him if he had diamond fusion, and he said it would be $145 more with 10 year manufacture warranty. When I had questions, he would respond within minutes. ZEANA GLASS: Sent quote request w/out a floor plan on Sat and got a response back in 12 minutes telling me to text a photo of the shower/layout. After I texted, I didn't get a response back until Mon morning. The quote indicated where the shower door hinge would be and that the glass would be 3/8" standard clear tempered glass or starphire ultra clear for $300 more. The cost they offered was pretty close to most of the quotes that I received but I decided not to move forward because I had to go out of the yelp app to send them a picture of the project and had a delayed response. Argonaunt Glass: Sent quote request w/out a floor plan on Sat and got a response back Mon morning asking to send over rough estimates and email. After I sent over the floor plan, I got an email back with a PDF estimate quote. The PDF had approximate dimension and size of each glass (door would be 3/8", walls would be 1/2") as well as the different hardware pieces. It would be an additional $409 for starphire ultra clear and additional $254 for diamond fusion. Their cost was about the same as the other quotes I got, but I decided not to move forward with them because the cost to add diamond fusion was more. Heavylux: Sent quote request on Mon w/ floor plan and current shower picture and got a response in less than 3 hours but was told that specific measurements for the shower area was not provided in the floor plan so I would need to provide that to have a quote sent over. I could also give their rep a call to schedule a free on-site estimate. I didn't follow-up with them afterwards because all the measurements needed were on the floor plan (Shower was next to a standard bathtub) and it would require me to do extra work to provide them with extra measurements. Hayward Glass: Sent over initial quote request on Monday with floor plan and current shower picture and got a response & quote within 15 minutes telling me the total cost and that the lead time would be 6-8 days. I decided not to move forward with them because their cost was over $1k more than the other quotes I got and they didn't provide any additional details on what they offered. AMC Glass: Sent over initial quote request on Monday with floor plan and current shower picture and got a response within 1.5 hours. They asked follow-up questions on the height and depth of the pony wall, overall height of the unit, width of door opening, and if I need any additional options (Rowe bar, glass treatment, etc). I didn't respond after this because there were way too many questions to answer. FINAL MEASUREMENT APPOINTMENT After deciding to move forward with J's custom glass, we set up a final measurement appointment. Jorge told me he would arrive between 10AM-12PM. On the day of the appointment, he texted me letting me know that he was on his way and would be at my place in 20 minutes. I liked how he sent a notice before heading over. He was very detailed during his measurement and even told me how he would hide the imperfections in my tile walls (it wasn't level). He also brought in samples of the ultra clear and standard glass. After everything sounded good, I gave him a deposit. FOLLOW-UP Jorge did a great job keeping me posted on the status of the shower glass delivery and even notified me when there was an issue with the glass. INSTALLATION DAY On the day that we were originally going to install the shower door, my construction worker did a last minute re-grout of the shower floors. Jorge arrived with team and then told us he wouldn't be able to install the glass because the grout was still wet. Instead of getting upset for making the trip to our house, Jorge was very understanding and told me that we could reschedule once the grout was dry. The other vendors quoted me at least $500 to $1,000 higher than what Jorge offered for an equivalent product. - Accommodative -- We wanted a somewhat unusual door hardware configuration (pull on the outside, knob on the inside). Jorge figured out how to achieve that with some resourceful combining of the manufacturer's products, at no extra charge. We also kept changing our minds about whether to install the sliding door on the outside or inside, and Jorge was very patient in accommodating our fickle changes (even up till during the install itself). The only small problems we encountered were: - Scheduling issues due to the custom glass arriving a bit later than what we were initially told. - Having to clean up a small mess from silicone caulk that apparently dripped onto our bathtub surround during the install (probably accidentally when Jorge put down his caulk gun).
