My friend couldn't stop raving about this place and told me to get a hair cut here because she highly recommended her hair stylist Lisa. It's appointments only. I had to call in advanced that I'd be a little late and luckily they still took me in. You do have to ring a doorbell and they'll unlock the door for you. It's a spacious salon and they provide you a place to put your belongings. They started with a wash and conditioner, which was nice and relaxing then Lisa proceeded to cut my hair wet. She did recommend cutting more since it's been 3-4 years since my last cut and my ends have really dried out. I am not so pressed on length so I gave her the wheel to cut the dead ends which resulted in at least 2-3 inches shorter. I'm obsessed to say the least. I have been Lisa's loyal customer for over 15 years from a college girl to a mom of two now. Lisa never disappoints me. Lisa is excellent hair stylist. Her "end-product" does not only look good but easy to manage afterward. It is not good enough to look awesome when you step out of the hair salon, you need to be able to manage and make it look good after that on daily basis. This is what Lisa can do. I went to J studio for haircut. My hair has natural curl in it and it is very soft. So my usual haircut doesn't really stay, and I end up having different hairstyles every time I wash my hair. Lisa is the first hairstylist that gave me a cut that last more than one hair wash! She really listens to my need and provides extra suggestions based on those concerns. Overall I strongly suggest anyone who is hesitated to try just call to make an appointment. You won't be disappointed. Make sure to clearly communicate and remind them how much length you want off. I've been going to Lisa for years. This last visit I stated that I didn't want any length off. She took off about 3 inches. So just saying make sure you are on the same page with her and she understands exactly how much length off you want and that you have the same definition of a clean up. I'm bummed about the whole experience. Also if she blows out your hair to finish the cut I've had some resistance to having it styled to a beach wave or getting it styled at all like the other salons do. Anyhow this place has served me for many years. Some cuts have been great others we were not on the same page even after pictures and confirming. They are never bad just not what I wanted 100 percent. It's time to move on so I don't plan on going back just because cutting 3 inches off is not a dust cut or clean up but full blown haircut which is not what I wanted, and is pretty upsetting. 3 inches is a lot! She is indeed very awesome. She has been doing my hair for about four years now. I trust no one else. When I first came to J, I had Lisa as my stylist, but then I got sick of waiting months for an appointment with her. Also, whenever she was cutting my hair, she would pause and then go work on somebody else for a while and then come back and resume my hair cut. Some Tips: -It's polite to tip the hair stylist at least 20%. -When they wash your hair, they give you a blanket and put a piece of cloth over your face. At first, I thought the cloth on my face was a little creepy, but it was actually pretty relaxing. -No credit cards, only cash. -Ask for a stamp card!!! Had my appointment with Hide today at their new location in Rowland Heights! It's in a better place in my opinion. Easier to find (next to the AT&T store) and way bigger. I love the decor and ambiance of the place. I don't have much experience with salons to be honest, before it was just barber shops because I had the simple spiked hair cut heheh but that high school hair style doesn't fly in my type of work =P Anyway I love going there and don't really care how long the actually haircut takes because it's really like personal therapy. Now I kind of see why the ladies love going to the salons other than to look good afterwards. Everything is what I'd expect from a high-quality place. Everyone was prompt and friendly. The person who washed my hair was very gentle and pleasant to chat with. And of course talking to Hide was a blast. Background music is a nice selection and the new place looks simply amazing. After being sad that my old hairdresser (a guy, cute, buff, tattoo-y, Caucasion) left to San Jose, I decided to hunt for another new hairdresser. With the help of my bestfriend, she found this place on Yelp, and she said: "You wanna try Japanese salon?" a little nervous at first because I've been going to "white" people salon, I said, "I guess we can give it a try" Coming to a hair salon with no recommendation, no one you know, and just trusting fellow Yelpers can be tricky business. Not because we all have different needs and style we wish to have, hair style isnt the same as food taste, it takes longer to grow your hair then just to say "I've had better ramen". We called in to make appointment, we had been pushed back to 2 weeks later because our stylish, "MICHELLE" is booked. At first I was thinking to myself, "2 weeks later just to book an appt?! ridiculous." Until my right mind is thinking properly, "dang, she must be good, that she is full booked for the next 2 weeks" (yes, you probably will experience this). -- I can honestly say that finding hairdresser that fits YOU isn't easy, and my mum always say, when you like a hairdresser, stick. with. it. I usually come here, just sitting there with Michelle behind touching my hair and asking me what I want to do with it, and I just say, "Michelle, I really don't know, I just want it with layers, and bangs, and I trust you" and she giggles :) and I've always trusted her. My hair always feels 10pounds lighter, layers at it's best, bang's at it's right angle. She is sooooo delicate. The way she cut your hair, you know it's so precised. And I think she just wants you to look good (i.e: "should I grow my bangs?" "keep it at this length, it'll be the perfect length for you") And usually our session gets a little longer, we talked about food, weekend plans, work, she's like my friend that makes me look and feel good, that I see once every 3-4months. and with that said, once every 3-4 months for a trim/haircut costing -- cash only/checks-- $50 (+tip) is a bargain, wouldn't you think so? :) Hair color is awesome too! $95. They will match the color you desire, so choose wisely -- you won't be able to blame them if you didn't like the colors. I don't regularly get a haircut (in fact, the last time I cut my hair was the first time in about 4 years) so I don't really know anything about hair salons. So when I decided it was finally time to cut my hair, I asked my friends. A couple of them had come here and recommended it, and it seemed like it had good Yelp reviews, so I decided to give them a try. I called ahead and made my appointment and then finally came in. They're located in a plaza with several other businesses which means they have a large parking lot--very convenient. It's also down the street from 85C Bakery which is a plus ;) Everyone I interacted with here was really nice and friendly. Ayano Otani was my stylist and she was pretty nice. I feel like there was a slight language barrier between us though :/ Oh and they give you a membership card here but I'm not really sure what it does. Since I hadn't cut my hair in a very long time, it had obviously grown pretty long. I wanted to donate my hair, but J's Studio doesn't do hair donations. They will, however, tie up and cut it so that it can be donated, but they'll give it to you in a bag for you to take and mail yourself. Which was fine; turns out it's a really easy process to donate to Locks of Love. So Ayano did a great job with cutting my hair. I didn't really have any specifics on how it should be styled; I just wanted it layered and thinned. It seemed like she did a decent job then, but my hair is just so thick she didn't really make a dent. It was back to its normal thickness the next day :/ Overall though, it was a pretty good experience. This place is great! I just got back from getting a japanese straight perm. I've been getting them for years, some times in the States (including Van Van in LA) and other times in Tokyo. Lisa worked on my hair and I totally recommend her. Book ahead since Lisa seems pretty busy. It took a few hours to do my hair since my hair was long, but it was totally worth it. My hair is really thick, heavy, and wavy in some areas. I am so happy with my results. Lisa is very attentive and addresses any questions you have. She also cut my hair exactly the way I wanted. Just went here for the first time today and... two words.. F*CKING AMAZING.... BEST customer service EVER, from reception to owner to actual stylist. My stylist's name is hard to spell, but he's a tall Japanese guy with long hair. He is absolutely the most fun to chat with... Seriously, I love AVEDA JADE salons, VIDAL's and even HA. This is really the place to be. I brought in about 5-8 photos for my hairstyle and he was able to imitate it so well and made it look so good on me. Damn, I love this place, I'm going back in 3 weeks. 40$ is NOTHING seriously, for this kind of service and satisfaction. This review is only for haircuts since I don't color my hair. I tend not to experiment with hair too much; once I find a style that works, I stick with it. So in 2005 when I finally decided the Cher shower curtain 'do had to go, it was kind of a big deal finding the right person to chop it off. It sounds silly, but the bob that Lisa gave me really was a life-changer, and I've been loyal to J's Hair Studio ever since. Lisa, the senior stylist, is fantastic and really understands how hair works. She's a little conservative though (ex. will leave hair longer rather than shorter). After four years of the bob, I switched it up and tried Michelle, who gave me my current style (which I LOVE). She was really sweet and was somehow able to turn my vague descriptions of what I wanted into a flattering hairstyle, even without a photo. Sadly she's not doing hair anymore. Most recently I've tried Hide, who's been at the salon for ages. He works quickly, and though I was a little worried he wasn't spending enough time, the cut ended up looking exactly like Michelle's. Another thing I love about J's Hair Studio is the wash and shampoo, which they do before cutting your hair. They cover your face with a light cloth napkin so water doesn't get in your eyes, and I swear, once you close your eyes, you could just fall asleep. They give amazing head massages while they shampoo and condition your hair, and it's the best part of the whole experience. Over the years I've tried a couple other (cheaper) places, but after a few horrible experiences, I honestly don't trust any other salons. Even though I don't live in SoCal anymore, I still make the trip back for a haircut every 6 months. Luckily, after seeing the disaster hair styles I've received over the years, a co-worker recommend Lisa at J's Hair Studio. I was SO impressed! Everyone is so meticulous there! Lisa is the owner and head stylist. There are other stylists there too, but she's the ONE. She also teaches, so you'll always have a few assistants prepping you, etc. They are all SO nice too! And she teaches you how to curl your hair to enhance your style. Great for hair-dummies like me! It's basically a Japanese salon. Lisa is Japanese as well as everyone else. They are all so trendy! One major tip: they accept cash only, so be sure to have a lot of it when you go. It typically costs me about $170 including tip for hair cut and color. Finally I decided to give this place a try and I've already been back 3 times for hair cut. Tip: Ask for Lisa. She's the owner and a great stylist. I always tell my friends that she's looks like the Japanese version of Rachel Zoe. Lisa always goes through how you'd like to style your hair before she start cutting. Even for the one time when I didn't really have an idea, she'd get a look book and start a mini-meeting with me before she did anything. This is hands down the best hair salon in the Los Angeles area in terms of quality for price. It is priced somewhere between the cheap Asian haircut places in Monterey Park (typically $20-30 for a woman's haircut at a decent place) and the expensive LA celebrity studios ($200-300 for a cut). At $50-60 for a haircut, Lisa and Hide are both excellent artisans and do careful, precise work and design. Their haircuts last a long time and hold up the styles without a trim (I know, I know--I'm supposed to get a trim every 4-6 weeks!) for months, keeping decent shape regardless of how I maintain it (or don't). There's plenty of movement and shape and support in the styles, and Lisa and Hide are always accommodating to what your vision is. What this comes down to is this: if you are the kind of person who spends only $20-30 for a woman's haircut (as I was before I came here), this will seem way too expensive for you. However, the haircuts here are on par with the quality of the expensive Hollywood studios for sure, so you are getting an incredible deal for what you get. Be prepared with cash--it's cash only and there aren't too many easily accessible banks in the area. Call ahead and when making your appointment (both Hide and Lisa can be booked up for weeks), ask for a quote so that you bring enough cash for the style and the tips. read more

Lisa is the best stylist here.. She's Wella USA top stylist.. but it's kinda difficult to make appointment with her.. I need to wait at least 3 weeks to get a haircut.. Lisa teaches hairstyling too.. and she travels a lot for shows etc.. The hair studio is contempory & simple style.. the staffs here are incredible nice... Ask for Lisa. I have very thin, very fine hair, so in general, Japanese hair places aren't very well suited for me as they tend to thin away a great deal of your hair. However, you can get great styling here, which is what I come here for. I would give this place more stars except they've gone up in pricing, and they didn't do a very good job coloring and perming my hair. I think the problem could've been either the texture of my hair, or the fact that I had gone through different color treatments. The fact remains that I am not the hair specialist here, and if they'd known that it would not be effective to color or perm my hair, they should have let me know. I had to come in twice to perm my hair (since the first time was ineffective), and the second time ended up being just as ineffective. Waste of my time and money. That experience aside, everyone who works there is wonderful and friendly! read more

I came here last time and got a great haircut from Michelle. She's no longer here, so this time I made an appointment with Yui. I was a little nervous because the majority of reviews here are for Michelle, but Yui was great too! Super sweet and nice. She asked me what I wanted and asked lots of questions to make sure to get all the details right. She showed me pictures to confirm, and double checked the length. She spent a good amount of time thinning out my hair and layering it and texturing it, so I'm VERY happy! I have ton of hair that always gets super heavy. $40.00 + tips is very pricey for a guy's haircut in my opinion. Although i do like the sophisticated hairstyle i may end up walking out with, my hair grows out way too fast to be considered worthy of their skills. I had stopped going, and is currently in search of a new stylist Hide (pronounced Hee-dey), the store manager, was the one i asked for every time my hair started to look like a boxy fro. He is one of the more experienced ones out of the bunch, and is very quick with the scissors. as skillful as he is, he admits to be more specialized in styling for girls. I have referred a couple of my girl friends there, and they're still going till this day. i would definitely give J hair a 4 star rating if it wasn't for it's price. correct me if i'm wrong, but the next closest japanese hair studios are either in huntington beach, or costa mesa. I have found my HG hair salon in the heights *^^* and no longer need to drive in grueling traffic to ktown. After reading all the 5 star reveiws on yelp I decided to go check it out and I'm super glad I did. I was in DESPERATE need to get my hair done so I booked my appt with Michelle for color/cut/style and I absolutely love my hair. I am sooo happy with my hair I booked my appt with michelle in advance *^^*. Unlike most ktown salons... they actually ask you what you want and go over everything with you thoroughly *^^*. They even put a small blanket on you when they're washing your hair and massaging your scalp and it feels sooooooooooooooo good. Even though its cash or check only they were packed and it was only Tuesday. For color, cut (layers) and style it took around 3 hours and cost around $150.00 (before tip). I thought this was a reasonable price since I get charged the same at some hair salons in ktown. If you live around Diamond bar, Rowland/Hacienda Heights, Fullertob and etc... and don't feel like driving to LA then I highly reccomend you check this place out *^^* read more

I absolutely love this place and all the stylists are great so I do not know why there are such poor reviews. J's is a very busy salon so obviously you won't get a next day appointment or even an appointment in a week. Yes, they are pricey, but it's absolutely worth the price. If you want a $20 haircut, go to Supercuts because you'll get what you pay for. I've had my hair colored and cut here many times and it's always such a great experience. The color flatters me and the cut is on point. I've had most the assistants work on my hair along with Lisa herself. The students are taught a serious skill here and are required to do it to a certain standard. I absolutely recommend this place to anyone wanting a great salon to do their hair. read more

After trying a plethora of hair studios in the area and not particularly liking any of them, I finally decided to give it a try. I got really lucky and was able to come in day of -- got squeezed in to Lisa's schedule about 45 min after calling. I'd definitely suggest making an appointment. Lisa is probably THE sweetest lady I've ever met!! It seemed like she really cared about me and did her best to give me the best possible haircut. During our mini consultation, she told me exactly how she was gonna cut my hair. I wanted about 5 inches off the bottom which was damaged and starting to look thin and stringy. She made my subtle layers more connected, and added texture so that it would look nice if I ran my fingers through my hair (which I do often since I don't have bangs). Throughout my experience, she gave me multiple styling tips, and things I could do on my own to prevent further hair damage. I LOVED the cut in the end -- def one of the best I've ever gotten. I was referred by my clients to Hideyuki Motokado, the hair stylist. He cut and styled the groom, groomsmen and bride's father's hair on the wedding day and they looked fabulous! So I made an appointment for my haircut yesterday afternoon. Their staff called me a day prior to reconfirm my appointment which was very professional. Because I was busy running erranrds and didn't have a chance speaking to Hide on the wedding day, I met Hide for the very first time yesterday. He is very humorous, patient, and talented. He listend to what I had in mind, repeated to make sure he understood and gave me a few suggestions before he cut my hair. His assistant sure know how to wash hair. Her hands were like electrical massager. After the first wash, Hide cut my hair. I told him even though I prefer short hair, but I have to keep the length for my boyfriend. So he kept the length of my hair, adds more layers, and gave me a whole new look. I like the haircut and their services. However, I do think it's a bit pricy in that neighborhood: $50 for a haircut plus gratuity. I got out the door and spent $60 for a haircut. So I deduct a "star" because of the price.
