Okay- so we only come out to Joshua Tree to go camping. Our axle in my Subaru went out right outside of Yucca and immediately I was HORRIFIED because I thought we were about to get totally ripped off since I known they probably get a ton of out of towners. Boy was I wrong. Don and the crew went above and beyond. He got us a tow truck which was super affordable, and gave us a great price for the work I needed done. Unfortunately, Friday afternoon Don called us and let us know that the part wouldn't be in until Saturday and they were closed on weekends.. well. One of his crew members (totally forgot his name.. so sorry. But to my defense I was wearing a t-shirt that said "kicking ass and forgetting names"!) offered to come in on his day off to fix our axle!!!! He gave us a ride to our hotel in Yucca and even offered to pick us up Saturday morning- talk about amazing customer service. Bottom line these guys are amazing and don't hesitate to bring your vehicle to them, even if it is from out of town. Also- YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! I went to JT Automotive based on the reviews that I saw online. Also, the fact that they have a shop on the Marine base. They call themselves, "The last 'honest' mechanic!" I figured, if they're on base, they GOTTA be "honest." I came in for a diagnosis and estimate. They charged the standard $85-90 bucks for this. (I think it's a bit pricey but this can't be avoided here in the desert where we don't have much of a choice. A diagnosis would be around $40, in a real city.) They found out that 2 of my fuel injectors were bad (they said it was "stuck open"). And they also recommended that I replace all 5 of them since they had to, "go in there and expose all of them anyway." Final price: $600. I said, sure, go ahead! Then I got a phone call saying, "Oops! I only charged you for one fuel injector. To replace two, it would cost $1,500. If you want to replace all 5, it's $1,800 plus tax." WHAT THE F*&$! Yeah...no. I ordered the fuel injectors from O'Reily's online. They were $65 a piece...SIXTY-FIVE DOLLARS A PIECE! That's $325 for all 5!!! Just got the injectors in today. I took my wrench, which is the only tool needed to for this job, so that I can unscrew the cover, POP the old injectors out, and POP the new injectors in. Just like that. Like the little legos we used to play with as children. No, seriously, I think legos were a little more intricate that this job. JT Automotive, "The last honest mechanic?" I don't think so. You are the epitome of why the general public cannot trust mechanics. If Yelp had negative stars, I would give that to you. Or maybe a F*CK Y@U star. I just had my 1996 GMC van worked on at J.T. Automotive. They did a very nice job and they did it quickly. My serpentine belt broke because of a seized pulley. I was in the park. The belt broke. I had no generator to charge the batteries. I no longer had power steering. It was sunset. I drove back down the hill about ten miles without headlights. J.T. was just closing shop. They took my vehicle in and fixed it the first thing the next morning. Awesome! read more

I'm not sure what the deal is with these negative reviews. I had a bad alternator that left me stranded in Joshua Tree. I read the reviews and almost didn't take my car here, but it was the only place open. Turns out, the place is great. They got me up and running at a reasonable price and they were pleasant to deal with. I would recommend it to anyone who finds themselves in JT with car trouble. read more

Wow, reading the reviews here do not sound at all like the experience I had with these folks. A few years back, my truck broke down as I going into J. Tree for work. My insurance Co. towed me to "the nearest repair facility" which happened to be JTs. We left the truck, walked over to a local place and had a great breakfast, when I came back they had diagnosed what was wrong (lift pump) Gave me a price, which was very fair, and ordered the part. The owner then drove the 3 of us way into the park (a good hour and a half, at least, on his time and expense) so I could pick up another vehicle from the company that I worked for at the time. The parts came in the next day and I had my truck the day after that. They then dropped the price from what I had been quoted and then worked with me even more on it! I cannot speak highly enough of how I was treated here and would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone. Maybe I got lucky and caught the mechanic on a good day, but I have absolutely NO complaints about how I was treated, the price of the job, or about the quality of work that was done to my truck! If I lived in the area, they would be my regular mechanics! read more

My car was towed to JT Automotive this morning with a bad starter. Got there about 11AM. Charged me $65 for a diagnostic tho it was obviously the starter that was bad. Long & short of it, parts were obtained from AutoZone in 29 Palms. I was charged $265 for the starter motor ( available from Amazon for $102), and $62 for the intake manifold gasket set ( available from Amazon for $21). I knew I was getting ripped off for the parts but what was I to do? Labor came to $319 including the $65 diagnostic fee. Total bill $684. Car finished at 4PM. Presumably the repair was done properly! But beware the ripoff prices! read more

I am a traveler who comes to this area often and I had a good mechanic here that fixed my car three years ago and he was reasonable. So I recently went back in Feb, 2016 since my car would not start every 20th time. They charged me $90 for a diagnostic and I agreed to it since I did not want to be stuck somewhere with a dead car and the problem was not easily identified. After waiting for that, and an old change ($65 for a domestic 10 year old car), they said it probably is the starter and they quoted me $590 with parts to fix this. That seems really really steep. Even online the part is only $90. So I went elsewhere and got my car fixed for $320 in Palm Springs even. So it pays to shop around.. a few phone calls and I saved myself $270. Crooks. They have another location in 29 Palms. Avoid both - there are cheaper mechanics that are far more honest! read more

Do not take your car here. I brought my car in because it was leaking oil and wouldn't start. The tow truck driver warned me that he didn't pay his employees fairly but I had made the appointment and the reviews were not that bad at that point. I should have listened. My car was misdiagnosed again and again, never fixing the original issue. At the end of it all my car continued to leak oil and I was out $1800. My car sat in their lot for weeks before they even looked at it claiming they were waiting for a part. I was called with a new estimate and he took off the down payment of $500 from the total making the new repair sound less expensive than it was. When I finally went to pick up the car that wasn't fully fixed I was told it would be another $600 on top of the $1800 I already paid. When I confronted him about this he got extremely defensive and just walked away refusing to talk to me. Stay away, stay away. Classic scam artists read more

After an initial charge to analyze the problem with my windshield wipers and a specific quote for repair I returned to have the work done. Apparently he had trouble with executing the repair and raised the final bill bt an additional $75.00 for a total of 440.00. His total was $125.00 higher than the estimate I received from a competitor in the adjacent town of Yucca Valley. read more
