Today I tried Juanita's Mexican Restaurant. I walked in to receive a friendly greeting and guys - the owners were lonely! :(. No one was in there! I remembered Taco Time when everything turned around for them when they put out a post - 'Guys - we're lonely in here! We want you to enjoy all the delicious food we've made!' And people rallied around that small business til just this year they got best in southern NH! Let's do this again for Juanita's! The food was absolutely amazing! The place was very clean! She wore fresh gloves to make our food! (And we're so picky and sensitive to anything but the freshest food!) I got the steak burrito for my son and beef tacos for me - with the best homemade rice and beans! Three beautiful young ladies walked in while I was there - I asked them, 'Do you like this place?' We lived in Tucson and Dallas for 40 'years. This place reminds me of Tucson's Sonoran fare more than Dallas' TexMex, especially the selection of burritos. The place is small - four 4 tops and one 2 top, and it is run by a couple. The margaritas are delicately balanced between sweet and sour (most places tend to overemphasize sweetness). Prices are reasonable and portions are decent. The salsa was not spicy and well seasoned. The red sauce has an initial bite fades to a fresh tomatoes well done. The green chile sauce is fresh and delicately sour. It seems as though everything is made from scratch with fresh ingredients. The tortilla bowls were large and flavorful. My steak chimichanga was tasty and neither greasy nor oily (they should charge more for steak). This is a unique and very local place that needs to be supported - we will be back. read more

I am writing this review with a little trepidation... I am afraid that people will find out how wonderful this restaurant is and it'll make it difficult to get into. But, it is soooo good, I need to let people know. It is the best food, service and drinks of any Mexican restaurant in the area. I received a gift certificate after winning a raffle, and I took my wife and another couple there for dinner. We were all blown away! Here's a list of items we had: Sopes (app), tacos, quesadillas, steak fajitas, enchiladas, and Margaritas (Classic and Strawberry). Everything was top shelf. It was served quickly- hot and delicious. An absolutely wonderful experience! During our time there, I observed two other tables all saying the same thing. I got a steak Burrito and I was not impressed, I cut my first piece and I'm like where is the steak, I then opened it right up and was very disappointed, there was about a tablespoon of steak cut up in very very tiny pieces. This small place is way out of the way and seems family-run. Cute touches like sombreros and paintings of cowboys and bulls. It's the real thing. Sure they have all the Tex-Mex standards: tacos, burritos, enchiladas, etc. But the magic is in the details: Rather than the usual fillings uninspiringly called "beef", "chicken", or "pork" they have "Pork Al Pastore", "Chorizo", "Carne Molida", "Pollo Adobado", and the like. In our tacos we each had one of the Al Pastore and one of the Chorizo and they were memorable with their bright spicy flavors. The chorizo was especially good and was distinctively seasoned unlike any other chorizo I've tried. We both had the same entrees: a combination plate with the 2 tacos already mentioned and two tamales. I had hard-shell tacos and the wife had soft. Interestingly, only the hard tacos came with cheese (Cojita) and lettuce. Was this possibly a mistake? Maybe. The tamales were large, wrapped in corn husks, and with a good amount of filling: shredded chicken. The masa dough was not too heavy; that can be a problem sometimes. It's nice to have tamales offered as a regular item. Often times they are only available as an occasional special or as an (overpriced) appetizer. The beans and rice sides were also good. Especially the refried beans. Too often they are unattractive and watery and way too much of them so they dominate the plate. Not here. Just the right portions of both. The tortilla chips were just ok. (Chips and salsa provided free of charge.) The salsa though was very good: smokey, limey, lots of cilantro. Maybe a bit thin though. I asked for hot sauce to kick up the heat a bit. They brought over two: one red ("very hot") and one green. They were in unlabeled bottles but I don't know if they were made in house or not. They were good but even the "very hot" one was not really that hot to me. We also ordered guacamole, partially to make up for the lack of cheese on the wife's tacos. Excellent. We weren't expecting such a large portion though, served in a cast-iron "pig" complete with feet and and a painted-on face. Very cute, but I don't know how they keep it clean and sanitary. Speaking of "clean", the wife thought the place seemed a little dirty. Just a bit though: minor things like dingy wood moulding and a menu that was a little sticky. Nothing too bad, and nothing that made us concerned. (I probably wouldn't even have noticed, myself.) The margaritas were excellent: Obviously made with fresh lime juice and not at all sweet. Not a mix. Plenty of tequila; I don't know what kind. Mine was rimmed with jalapeno-laced salt, a nice heat to it, and had a peculiar green color. All natural? Probably not but maybe from the jalapeno? I'd definitely go back. There are plenty of other things I'd try there. (But probably not the tripe - I'm not that adventurous!) It's too bad they're not open for supper: only breakfast and lunch. read more

It's not a big location or fancy, but the service was wonderful and our experience was pleasant! We enjoyed the following... Cheese Nachos which were stacked high with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, avocados, and crema, Puffy Adobo Chicken Tacos were also stacked high and amazingly flavorful, Chicken Empanada who's filling included black olives, the Chicken Tamales were so moist and packed with flavorful chicken and lastly the Tostadas, they begin with a crunchy corn tortilla, then refried beans, adobo chicken, lettuce, tomatoes and finally a healthy swizzle of Crema. This is our hole in the wall, family style Mexican place with its amazing puffy tacos, its friendly family who knows us and knows what we order, always has extra horchata for my son and the food is consistently fresh, quick and delicious. Fine dining is elsewhere. Come in, sit down, grab a beer or get some take out, either way relax, chill, hang out, talk to the owner or your neighbor. Unfussy and real. I like to get a big pile of the steak tacos and top them off with jalapeño guacamole (you have to ask for it, this is a family restaurant not Chilis, remember), which is incredible. There's also a reason everyone's talking about those puffy tacos. Yum. For being family style, a lot of the flavors are subtle. I disagree with criticisms of "bland;" if you want spicy put some spicy stuff on it. I like that it's not drowned in too much cheese, too much inauthentic BS, I like being able to taste the quality of the meat, the way it's cooked, the tang of the salsa but also the jalapeño in my avocado. The crema is perfect. It's these small, reliable details that keep us coming back. Grab a bunch of tamales, take them home, eat them for days. Ask for a mole tamale. OMG. Nuff said. We're new to the town, and we have been trying out all the (few) local establishments. We've definitely been reliant on Yelp to see what is worth our while. We were encouraged by the reviews on Yelp for Juanita's and the restaurant is only a few miles from us. We work a ton and both commute to Boston, so we rarely have time together. We planned to have a date night at Juanita's last night. We walked in and stood there prior to asking to be seated. We were never given a direct answer, but ended up seating ourselves. We heard the couple next to us order, but never had a waitress come to us. About 10 minutes later, we had two beers delivered to our table. We had not ordered any beers. We recognized the beers were meant for the table next to us, and gave them the beers. It was another 15 minutes before anyone came to our table to take our order (we went to the front desk and found menus for ourselves). At this point we'd been in the restaurant over 30 minutes with no food or drink. 20 minutes later our food arrived. We had ordered the steak fajitas and the chicken fajitas. The rice was completely bland with no seasoning. The refried beans were clearly from a can. The fajitas were completely boring -- it was meat, onions, and peppers, with absolutely nothing else. Typically, you'd get a plate with cheese, sour cream, salsa/tomatoes, guacamole, etc. Nope. We had our food but still had no drinks. We asked for drinks but received them another 15+ minutes later, well after we'd finished our meager portions. I wasn't even in the mood for a beer at that point, but we'd ordered them, so I drank it. After FINALLY getting all our food and drink, we could not find one person to check us out. All in all, it took us one hour and forty minutes to get out of this restaurant where we ate one (tiny) entree apiece and drank one beer apiece. Had the food been outstanding I may have been wiling to overlook the horrific service, but everything was just bad. Sadly, we won't be back. read more

My family and I stopped in here on Sat night after realizing that there was a wait at Chrysanthis. I've heard good things about Juanita's, but hadn't previously been there. The place is very small (about 5 or 6 tables). We sat in the "upstairs" area as the available tables were close to the front door. Yes, the menu is very small... but enough to hit all the bases. My kids split a 2 taco kids meal (as my son only likes tacos, and my daughter loves rice and beans). My wife got the taco salad and I got a pork & onion torta. (Torta is a "Mexican sandwich") The food was great! My son was put off a little bit by the fresh corn tortillas (as he is familiar with flour tortillas), but the meat was good. Daughter loved the rice and beans. Taco salad was HUGE and has bits of steak as opposed to ground beef. My torta was amazing. Probably one of the sandwiches I've ever had. The pork was well coated in a red sauce and had fresh red onion and cilantro. It had mayonnaise on it, but it definitely wasn't your typical Hellmans or Cains variety....something much lighter and more fluid. The fresh torta bun was good, but got a little soggy on the bottom from the filling. The only thing that was slightly strange was it took our server a good 20 mins to make up our bill. Three menu items ($8.50 each) and a lemonade shouldn't be that hard to compute. Not sure if he might have been new or something. Will definitely be back! read more
