Delicious veggie burrito (3.5 Green Stars) Wandering through the Garden District on a *Monday night in April (i.e., not busy), Juan's jumped out as the place to be. I really turned up at their peak and it was a bit chaotic ordering a burrito to-go and then finding a spot that wasn't in anyone's way. They need a better system for this. The other downside was that my burrito was uneven - mostly rice on one end (too bland) and mostly veggies/salsa on the other (too intense after the blandness). Other than that, my Veggie Punk was one of the best burritos I've ever had :-) *It turned out that it's Happy Hour at Juan's all day on Monday - no wonder it was busy! There are four branches of Juan's Flying Burrito in NOLA and according to a Reddit poll this branch is a favorite, pipping the Mid-City branch by a few votes. Next time I may dine in and try out the Mardi Gras Indian Tacos (the best Southern Vegetarian Taco you've ever had, apparently). I'm also rating Juan's Flying Burrito 3.5 out of 5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on the following: * Juan's has a reasonable number of vegan and vegetarian options, including some customer faves. * There's a lot of steak/beef on the menu. Reducing this would have a big impact on Juan's environmental footprint as beef is responsible for around 10% of greenhouse gases and is the major driver of global deforestation. Burritos and nachos would be great dishes for testing out beef-alternatives. Beyond Steak may be too pricey but a homemade seitan could work. * Juan's donates to various charities around the city, like homeless youth (Covenant House) and the Michael J Fox foundation (according to the ViaNolaVie blog). Seems to take good care of staff too. * Some items (salsas, dressings) are made from scratch and a few others (corn tortillas, beans) are sourced from local partners. Another outstanding hole in the wall option with good selection of beverage and vegetarian meal options. Service was good, beers quickly appeared with 2 very large burritos following. I had the Supergreen burrito with added tofu and cheese, partner had the Veggie Punk burrito with added tofu. We each sampled both and had a spirited conversation over which was better. Still delicious after all these years! I haven't been to Juan's in a while and that's a shame. They have made some changes to the menu but most of the favorites have been on the menu for over 15 years and are still great. One notable change is the tortillas have been upgraded since the last time I went. They are fresher and better (not that they were bad before). The day we went was pretty busy and the service was a little slow to start with but they seemed short staffed for the amount of people on a Tuesday afternoon, so no harm there. The music that was playing was an interesting choice, a mix of death metal that I could have done without, but it's always different so I don't mind hearing something that's not my favorite. Stopped in for a quick afternoon bite and chose to sit at one of the two tables out front. The service was great--staff were very attentive to guests, even those seated outside, which I truly appreciated. I started with the hibiscus margarita, which wasn't my favorite. This may simply come down to personal preference, but it didn't taste well-mixed and lacked a smooth finish. Okay, I'm confused by the raving reviews. Maybe I have to come in during the day for lunch or something cause late night (9pm) the food is not it. I ordered a veggie punk burrito and it was sloppy. The burrito was not wrapped right. As soon as I undid the foil it was wrapped in, the burrito was coming a part and you can tell it was barely much food. Seriously chipotle wraps their burritos better. I had to go back and look at the ingredients cause where was the rice and beans. Sophia and I had lunch here at Juan's during our annual Christmas visit to New Orleans with our respective families. This has been one of our favorite spots for years when we lived in the area until moving to Virginia, but we stopped by several times with the last visit occuring in 2019. Let's find out if this visit served us well or not. There was plenty of seating available when we walked inside. Less foot traffic for us which is a very good thing. The decor was spotless with a mixture of music playing on the speakers. Within minutes, we were ready to order. For apps, we chose chips and queso. Not a bad start for our meal with the queso cheese well seasoned. For my main course, I selected the Cow Punk burrito which consisted of skirt steak, home fry potatoes, chile-aioli, melted cheddar jack cheese and salsa fresca. Very good and flavorful. Just keep in mind the burrito isn't as big as others due to the number of ingredients included, but it was well cooked. Sophia had the flying burrito which she did finish in one setting. I've been here a lot of times and usually I love it today was very meh. I had the blackened fish tacos, ginger mint lemonade with Tito's, chips with refried beans. The chips are always delicious and I like them with beans instead of salsa (I don't eat cilantro). The ginger mint lemonade didn't taste like ginger, mint, or lemonade. The tacos were overloaded with coleslaw and tomatoes. The coleslaw was spicy (like it was supposed to be) but lacked flavor. Service was also meh. Tonight I'm switching it up and ordering something different These Blackened Redfish Tacos were so delicious! The fish was so fresh and flavorful, and not dry! This is key for me because who wants dry overcooked fish?! The toppings were fresh and the combination was tantalizing to my palette. Vegas, thank you! I had a long day of work and needed a big tasty meal. I found Juan's online and decided to grab some food to take back to my hotel. Vegas helped me out and she was a delight. This was my favorite place that I ate on this business trip! I ordered the chips and guacamole. They give you a ton of guacamole. It is fresher and tastier than buying the same amount at the grocery store. Cheaper too! The flying burrito was also really good. The steaks inside had a great taste but I didn't really like shrimp inside. I'd still eat it though. To top off, I also ordered a Mexican chocolate brownie. We stopped into Juan's after a few hours walking around and exploring the garden district. Mexican is my absolute favorite cuisine so I was really excited to try this one - and we were so glad we did! We were seated quickly because it wasn't busy at all, right at the front of the restaurant near the windows. The menu is extensive so I had a hard time deciding on what to order, but ultimately went with the flying burrito with queso. It has CHICKEN, SHRIMP, aaaaand STEAK! Best of all worlds in one meal imo! It was absolutely delicious. The refried beans had a ton of flavor and the burrito had a lot of steak and chicken in it. I also added salsa to it, as we ordered chips and salsa as an appetizer. You have to pay for them but it's only about $3 and it's bottomless, so it's worth it I think, especially because the salsa was tasty, fresh, and with a good amount of spice. My husband got the nachos with chicken and beef and he really liked them too! One thing I also want to mention here is the price point - Food in this area can be so expensive and this was one of our most affordable meals we had in our trip, especially for the value of how great the food was. Juan's Flying Burrito was a recommendation from one of our Uber drivers during our trip to New Orleans. He did such a great job of planting the seed in our heads that it was the first place on our minds when we were out in the Garden District. My fiance and I shared the chips and salsa, a jerk chicken street taco, and the flying burrito. Chips and salsa were solid. Nothing unique to point out, but worth noting how fresh they tasted. I had half the Flying Burrito and felt full. It was essentially a super burrito but with three types of meats: steak, shrimp, and chicken. I could particularly taste the marinade of the steak, which was so flavorful. I didn't quite notice the chicken, but I knew it was in there due to the texture. I wish there was more pieces of shrimp. I had a bite of a burrito which was fine, but extremely unsatisfied with my "tacos" - if you could bestow that name upon whatever I received. I was enjoying their queso con chorizo last week when a very tall fellow emerged from behind the kitchen wearing a Luchador mask, leopard print bikini and neon green Crocs and carrying a gigantic Fender P-Bass. He stood in front of the restaurant and yelled, "I am the God of hellfire and I bring you...." and suddenly started playing a very intense, dramatic, poignant, and moving bass solo that was truly transfixing. Patrons all stared in awe and some held out lighters in a sign of solemn solidarity for the epic performance they weee witnessing collectively. This has long been one of my go-to restaurants in New Orleans. I absolutely love the relaxed atmosphere. You can tell the staff are hardworking awesome humans. Food wise, I regularly order the bacon Azule quesadilla which is huge and hearty. I like the Mojado Burrito. Easily feeds two people or one very hungry person. Waiter came over quick got us waters & told us about their happy hour (super nice as we didn't know it was HH). Menu is about 3 full pages long. There are apps, salads, tacos, burritos, enchiladas, fajitas and a vegetarian section. We got the queso as an appetizer (4/5). We can out of chips and our waiter brought more - no charge. Happy hour house margs - double for the price of a single (basically save $3). They tasted good - not the best one ever but for the price you can't beat it. We have been in here many many times and loved it! Yesterday however was horrific. There were 4 tables sat and it looked like they all had their food. Our waiter stood at the door and never went back to check for our food. Over a half hour later ( yes we timed it) he shows up with flaming hot plates with the worst looking food ever. It was obvious that these had been sitting under the heat lamp for a LONG TIME. I got chicken enchiladas with red sauce and there was very little meat that was dried out. I wanted red sauce, and if there was any, it was baked on. The tortillas were crunchy and I got black beans even though the menu said refried. My husband got the flying enchiladas which is supposed to be 3 different enchiladas ( beef, chicken, shrimp) with a different sauce on each one. The meats were all mixed together with one sauce that was again baked on with dried crunchy tortillas. I took mine home (never ended up eating it) and my husband ate part of his. The only reason we didn't say anything is because we couldn't get the waiters attention away from whatever he was playing with at the podium. A buddy and I were craving a margarita while catching a football game on a Saturday night. We grabbed a seat at the bar and were immediately greeted by a great bartender. I ordered a spicy marg which was truly fantastic. This was one of my favorite margs here in New Orleans -- it was a perfect balance of sweet, heat, and lime, very refreshing! We split an order of chips and queso which was good. The queso thickened very quickly after being served, but was good while it lasted. I ordered a banh mi taco and a shrimp taco, which were both very very good. The Banh Mi taco was a unique choice that I would highly recommend to anyone who stops in. Late lunch on a hot and humid Sunday early afternoon was an interesting dining experience. We stared with a pitcher of margaritas which was nice & cold, and shared the Hawaiian Nachos with spicy carnitas, pineapple and grilled mangos.
