Today I went to the restaurant on veterans and it was my birthday. I ordered a margarita "shelf" that supposedly is the best. Well the brought it in a ugly plastic container resembling a glass cup. The refry beans taste terrible and the meat tasted old. read more

Each of the dishes we ordered was good. The chili relleno was large and had a really nice flavor. The enchilada was pretty standard but, again, good. The rice and beans were good. The Mexican street corn had great flavor, but what surprised us was that it was cold. While we did not order one, the table beside us had a giant burrito. Service was fine for a Friday night when it was packed. The one thing to note is that the restaurant was super loud. It's not a place to go if you want to have a quiet conversation. There were a ton of screaming kids, but in reality, we were all screaming kids at one point in our lives, so let them be. If you have young kids who are enthusiastic about Mexican food, this is the place to go. I would go back. read more

I recently picked up 3 dinners for myself and my Parents. Carreta's has it going on with the takeout. I REALLY appreciate that they put the taco meat in a separate container so the shell doesn't get soggy. That's over and above!!! We got 1 enchilada dinner and 2 Carreta's specials. My Mom recommended that I get the special with her and I'm glad I did. It had a taco ( seperate meat) an enchilada , a burrito and a tostada. Let me preface it that's its 3.5 and not 4 stars due to service. At end on lunch time a few days before Christmas...sat in bar area. Server was sweet and kind...loved her but she was never around. If I have to leave the table not once but twice to find someone...ugh. But the food was delicious. I had the Carreta's special and Chile Ranchero with chicken. Chicken was thin and tasty, not too salty and perfect seasoning. The pepper wasn't too over cooked - the cheese could have been melted more. Delicious dish. Mine was yummy!! they changed management in the past few weeks. they took away happy hour. they no longer serve any large or small drinks, they raised their prices on a medium margarita to as much as a large used to be. we waited for over an HOUR for our food while no one was in the restaurant. they need to get carlos back into the restaurant, the new manager and the waitress was extremely rude and unprofessional. i do NOT recommend coming here. read more

My go-to for Mexican. It's no frills and the quality is always consistent, no toss-ups on what you're going to get. Service is generally pretty good and friendly. Prices are on the dot and actually pretty cheap for the quality of the food you're getting. Def recommend! Their queso is always thick and tasty. Whenever we feel like splurging, we'll get the Popeye Dip (queso w/ spinach and artichokes) and fried puffy tortilla chips. Yum! We always get the grilled chicken nachos as a meal which are huge. We get the toppings on the side so that it doesn't get the chips mushy and they are always more than accommodating in hooking it up. read more

11 minutes I'm seated at the Metairie location bar and not even a "Hello" from any of 3 bartenders/servers much less a cold drink or chips/salsa. They answer the phone and distribute to-go orders but ignore customers seated inside. SMH I keep giving this place a chance but friends agree that service here sucks. I only come in on Tuesdays because I'm cheap and so are their $1 Chicken or Beef tacos on Taco Tuesday. Pro tip: download their app for a free appetizer. read more

The mixed fajitas was a disaster. I expect the standard fajitas grilled, I requested the beef to be on the medium rare side and the sizzled grilled chicken and shrimp instead I was served a dish that must have been either on a steam table or cooked in a pot. The food was cold, the shrimp were rubbery and the chicken dry. When I told the waiter that the meat was not cooked as I ordered it he took the dish to the kitchen. When he returned he said the meat cannot stay raw! I assume the waiter who wrote the order told the cook how I wanted my meal cooked. I was a guest with a of my brother and his wife, I didn't want to cause them to not enjoy their meal, so I just decided to tell my brother to bring the meal home for the dog. This was the worst food, it didn't taste good, was overcooked, cold and over priced for something that didn't remotely resemble fajitas. If I could rate this establishment with a it a minus 5 stars that would be close to what this place deserves. read more

Strictly cafeteria Mexican, everything tastes like a box of Morton salt was added. Retried beans right out of the can. Fajitas were a huge portion, but over-cooked and way too salty. Very few side items and served with only 3 tortillas. Service was just adequate. Server had a hard time answering simple questions about the menu. Margaritas were strong and tasty. If we would had a couple more the food might have tasted a lot better. But the worse thing about it was the noise level. No more than 5 other tables in the place, but the tile floors and hard surfaces made it unbearable. Impossible to have a conversation or even hear the server taking our order. I love carreta's! Their food is awesome and they have great margaritas. My favorite is their chicken tortilla soup. For dessert, you have to get tres Leche. The Metairie locations is different from the northshore but still just as good. Northshore puts whip cream and chocolate chips on their tres leche!! Anyway, they have a fun bar on the left side of the restaurant for special event nights with Latin music. Seems fun to go to, but we have kids and it's kinda on the louder side! We definitely go back whenever we get a chance. read more

I really like Carreta's! Back in the day when I used to roll deep my church group would come in and they were able to wear like 10-15 of us relatively quickly without reservations. Of course I would try to call ahead to see if they could put together a table for us or if it was too busy. First I'll start off with the things I like. Now keep in mind this is Tex Mex food. Basically the version of Mexican food that Americans are used to eating. 1) I love their margaritas! Spoken by someone who doesn't normally drink since I'm such a lightweight. These margaritas are strong and tasty! Remember to specify if you want your margarita on the rocks or blended bc these suckers are strong!! 2) I love their queso! I usually mix a bit of the queso and the salsa together to dip my tortillas in! 3) I normally order their mushroom quesadilla, refried beans and rice. Although I'm a carnivore there are times when I eat out that I don't want to eat meat of they cook their vegetables well! 4) I like the fact that their food comes out quickly! The only negative thing I would say is that like others said it could get really loud in here. But if you're serving strong margaritas and have loud people like me then perhaps that's to be expected! I wanted to meet my daughter for lunch one day to discuss credit cards and how interest works. She wanted to eat queso. Problem solved! The restaurant is clean and well staffed and our server was very attentive to our table. The food is good and served hot and fresh and in copious amounts. If you can't fill up on the chips and salsa, you'll do so with the big plates! I've eaten at Carreta's many times, at several locations, and the food is always delicious and the queso today was creamy and perfect. Today was the first time I tried a salad, though, and I was less than impressed. Nothing was really wrong with the salad, it was just "regular." I'll stick to the more traditional dishes from now on, Carreta's really does a good job on those. But, all in all the meal was great, as was the company, and I know I'll be back for more. read more

Me and my family went for my sisters birthday on the 27th of November. We went on a busy saturday so we had to wait like a good maybe 30 mins or less. The margaritas were on point. Our server was really nice and very helpful. I don't remember her name but she gave great customer service. Our food took forever to come out but ik they are short staffed so it's no big deal. Today I went out to eat with a friend for lunch, and we were seated at a table on the bar side. Everything was off to a good start at first, we ordered guacamole and queso, and were having a fun and relaxing time. That changed quickly... The table next to us were to gentlemen, they were already served when we arrived, and their food came out shortly after we were seated. I overheard one of them tell the other that their meal was bland and inedible. I saw the dish he referred to, and it was not touched, except for one bite. The server, who was also our server, approached the table to clear plates and asked if he wanted it boxed, to which I heard him say no, I didn't enjoy my meal one bit. The server walked off and then gave them the check, which I assume had the dish on it by the guys reaction. One of the guys walked out, leaving the guy with the bad dish to tell the server that he shouldn't have to pay for his dish since he didn't eat or like it. The server than began to argue with this guy, in front of all of us, telling him that HE was wrong, that nothing was going to be done about it, because everyone loves this particular dish. Obviously the guy didn't like the servers response and attitude, and continued to tell the server that he'd not be paying for food that wasn't eaten, and wasn't liked. The sever finally stomped away, and I guess he had the food removed from the guys check, but when he have it to the guy, he literally slammed the check onto the table, and stood there waiting for payment, and after the guy paid for the dish that was eaten, the server then demanded a tip!!! After arguing loudly to this guy, I'm front of a room full of other tables, you demand a tip. This left a very bad taste in my mouth, and my friends, and we decided that we'll be now going the extra half mile up the street to El Paso. Some people shouldn't be in Hospitality, if they're not going to be in a customer mindset. read more
