We were a party of 20+ (we didn't make any reservations) and they did not disappoint!!! This is a small Muslim family-run and family-style eatery where food is made in small batches with love. Be prepared to wait ~5'ish minutes to order/sit down and another 25-30 minutes to get your food. It is located right next to the city-train station so it may be a little difficult to find / park. Everything we ordered was delicious (as always) and the portions were more than enough to have not only seconds but also pack a portion for later. They also have this amazing ginger-honey flavor kava on the house which is always hot and ready for their customers! My favorite part is that it's Halal!! This place is such a hidden gem! Everything we ordered tasted great, and I cannot wait to go back with my friends. We ordered the sports plate with chicken and fish. The quantities here are huge, and although they say it serves two, it can easily be split with three. They meats are cooked along with veggies and are spiced. The plate also comes with a a choice of rice/bread. We selected half rice and Injera, which is like a soft pancake. I was so excited to try a new cuisine, and even more so that I absolutely loved it! My husband and I tried out this restaurant a few days ago. We live close by and have always wanted to try it out. We went on a Friday evening and it was pretty busy. When we got to the front of the line, we placed our order but had a couple of questions regarding the menu. The women who was ringing up our order seemed to be impatient and annoyed with our questions and wasn't too friendly. We ordered the chicken suqaar and beef sambusa. It literally took about 40 minutes for our order (dining in) and they forgot to give us the beef sambusa. We were happy with our choices but the chicken suqaar was a little on the salty side. Overall, the food is great but I just wish the customer service was better, so points off for that. read more

I was not aware of any Somali restaurants until recently, so my wife & I came here for a late Sunday lunch. We arrived around 1:30 PM to a half-full dining room. The server handed us a menu and asked us to order at the register when we were ready. We decided on 2 sambusas, the roasted goat cutlet lunch for me (over rice) and the Injera with Chicken Suqaar for her. The server advised us that the goat would take 30 minutes to cook, which was fine, since it's hard to find goat served anywhere in the Bay Area. Our food came out all at once. I dove into my sambosa first. It was hot out of the fryer and crispy, filled with ground beef. The side of green sauce is pretty spicy, but also very tangy, so I drizzled it carefully over my food. Both of our dishes came on very large plates with a small, dressed salad and more of the spicy green sauce. The proteins were served with mixed vegetables (carrots, cauliflower, bell peppers, & onions). All of the food was cooked perfectly, as the vegetables were still crunchy and not overdone. The chicken was cut into bite-sized pieces, but the goat was cooked on the bone. I don't mind, since so much flavor is in the bone, but be ready to cut around the bone (or eat it off the bone, like me!). I was also pleasantly surprised that there was enough rice for the meal, as I usually have to order additional rice with most meals. For my wife's place, there was more than enough injera for her. Before we left, we had a little cup of hot tea, served out of a large urn at the far end of the dining room. When I went to fill my cup, the urn was empty, but the staff quickly refilled it, so our drinks were piping hot and fresh. The drink was very sweet and gingery, the perfect way to end the meal. Most diners seemed to ask for to-go containers for half of their meals, since all the plates we saw were very large. But as very hungry diners, we finished off our food. Truly incredible food! I've been intending to visit this place for a while and am so happy I finally did! While it's rudimentary looks can throw a casual person off, I can bet that their food is just truly delicious. It's no wonder why they're so popular. To add, they add really lovely chai (tea) which seemed to be infused with cinnamon and jaggery which was free and unlimited. We had the roasted goat cutlet and the grilled tilapia which were just so flavorful and juicy. **Lastly but most importantly, I felt they are a woman-led restaurant which definitely deserves a special note and accolade. Wow. I didn't expect much from this place. In fact, it'd been sitting in my bookmarked list for well over two years constantly getting passed over. Definitely my loss. Stopped in for a long overdue visit on our way home from LA. It's located in an unassuming neighborhood light rail station with available parking via the light rail lot. Service was pretty straightforward: walk in, order/pay at the counter, find a seat, then they bring your order to you (no number etc), and possibly pay at the end if you hadn't already. We ordered the goat and beef Sport Plate with chapati. It was DELICIOUS! They served generous portions of meat and perfectly cooked onions over a bed of seasoned rice that come together in an absolutely tasty combination. I'm not sure how to describe the spices together but it's damn good. Having the chapati bread to go with it is a plus. They also serve a small side of green hot sauce that's EXTREMELY hot but still tasty. I don't go to San Jose too often any more but this will definitely be a reason to! read more

I heard about this place from a friend who used to live in SJ and I was so excited. I ordered over the phone and they said it would take 15 minutes. I got there, picked up my food and it was still HOT. I ordered the beef suqaar and sambusas. The beef was well seasoned and I loved the green sauce, just wish they gave me more. There wasn't much beef, just a lot of veggies but still delicious nonetheless. I got the sambusas since it was highly recommended on yelp but I didn't love it that much. It was kind of greasy. Super unique Somalian place! I had never had Somalian food until we went here. It's near the Santa Teresa light rail station, so parking is a bit confusing FYI. We got the sambusa and the sport plate which had meat, noodles, and rice. Everything was so flavorful, juicy and the portion was huge. We heard about this restaurant online and decided to give it a try. We've never had Somalian food before and were completely blown away! It's a small, hole in the wall place where you order at the front and sit down. We tried the roasted goat and sambusa. Everything was so incredibly flavorful and delicious. The rice was full of spices, the meat fell off the bone, and even the vegetables were cooked with the perfect bite. The portions were generous as well. The staff were so friendly and genuine. I haven't had Somalian food before, but it reminds me of a mix between Cuban food and Jambalaya. The beef suqaar was seasoned nicely and cooked to mix all the spices and flavors into the rice and meat. The beef was soft and tender. The chicken Kay Kay did not really have any seasoning that I can taste, and was on the sweeter side due to the plantains. The dish came with chopped chapatti mixed in and somewhat drenched in the plaintain's sweetness. The chicken was also very soft. The sambusa was crunchy and filled with beef and vegetables. The outer layer was thin and freshly fried. The portions are fair here and two people can probably split an entree. There is a nice spicy green sauce on the side and some salad with a creamy white dressing. Everything came out piping hot, which tells me that they make it to order and spend time cooking it to allow all the spices to soak in. The complimentary tea was delicious and reminded me of sweet ginger tea. Parking is a bit tricky as there are a ton of reserved parking for VTA, residents, or specific businesses. Customer service is not really a thing here. I seated myself and ordered from the counter and paid at the counter when I was done. Water and tea is self-serve. If things aren't busy, they will come and take orders for some parties. There is a lunch and dinner menu, but it does not appear to make a difference in price. We picked up food to go from Jubba driving back from Santa Cruz to the East Bay. Had been wanting to try it since it was ranked as a top 25 restaurant in the Bay by the SF Chronicle. Took us a while but it was well worth the wait! We had the goat cutlet with rice, the vegetables with rice and the beef suqaar with chapati. The Chronicle raved about the goat, and it really was great. Lots of flavor and well cooked. But for me, the star was easily the beef suqaar. It was incredibly flavorful and moist. Every bite was a bit of heaven. The vegetable dish was better than most veggie dishes you find at restaurants. It was bountiful and full of flavor. The chapati was very good but I'm not sure I'll ever have it again because the rice was just next level. I'm a huge fan of rice and love trying rice dishes from different cultures. This may be the best rice I've ever had, it was INCREDIBLE. I don't care how far away it is from our place, Jubba is a place we absolutely will be coming back to. read more

My first time at Jubba Restaurant, a favorite of my coworkers! Apparently it has been closed for quite some time (even on Apple Maps it said the restaurant was still closed). Came on a Friday afternoon for lunch and it was completely empty. I ordered the goat cutlet with Injera and it was wonderful! I've never had goat before but it was delicious! There were lots of bones to pick through, so if that's not your thing then I would suggest the beef which is shredded. I thought the goat on the bone was the most tender part though! There was some cinnamon tea that was complimentary which was delicious as well! Also my first time having injera, which is kinda of like a savory fluffy crepe! While I have had Ethiopian food before, I have never tried Somalian food and was simply blown away by how hearty the food is at this unassuming location. Jubba is a counter self-service restaurant tucked pretty far away for most in southeast San Jose. While the drive here was a bit long from Sunnyvale, it was absolutely worth it. For my first time, I ordered the goat injera which was piled high with tender morsels of goat and a mound of freshly made injera - a soft, stretchy crepe-like bread that can be used to soak up sauces. This went well with their unlimited, homemade, sweetened chai tea. This dish also comes with veggies and a spicy green salsa on the side which I absolutely loved. Portions here are massive and you WILL have leftovers to take home. Just note that wait times can be pretty long - upwards of 40 minutes so come here when you have some time to kill, get yourself a cup of chai, and enjoy good company with your friends - its worth it! read more

You just order at the counter when you're ready (make sure you get ALL your orders in at once as the food does take a while to make, but at least you know everything is fresh!). FOOD was five stars. Sambusas remind me of samosas. Green sauce is a great addition. I ate one along with an entree. Beef sugaar was good! Like Jon said it's like a fajita stir fry of goodness. Flavorful and it has veggies. I prefer it with the chepatti bread like tortilla naan. The injera is like the spongey Ethiopian bread if you prefer that. Chicken wrap was good too, but I liked the beef better. Complimentary sweet ginger tea setup. Toward the back as you go toward the restrooms. INSIDE definitely like a hole in the wall place and not five stars appearance wise, but food is good here and affordable. This place looks like it has been here for a long time and with nearly a thousand reviews and close to five stars you will overlook this part of the appearance. You order first. Get your food. Then you pay after you eat at the register. I'm surprised they do that at the risk of dine and dashers. One small tv showing news. PARKING lot is the same area as the Ohlone Chenowyth light rail station. You'll feel like you're driving into an apartment complex at first. Beware of sketchy people walking around though. read more

BEST BEEF I HAVE EVER TASTED. Ordered beef suqqar with chippati and salad. The meal took about 20 mins to come up because they make all their food fresh and they were low staffed. The beef was tender, juicy, flavorful, and cooked well done all at the same time?! Something I've really never experience. It was seasoned to perfection and somehow maintained its flavor with very little pink on the inside. 10/10 would recommend. The goat was also very tender and tasty. It did have a strong goat flavor so if you're not into that you probably won't like it but it was cooked well. Sambussas were hot and tasty. The server brought them out early as she knew we would need to wait a while for our food due to low staffing. I would say the size is pretty good for being only $1.75 per piece. They are stuffed with ground beef and veggies. Green chutney is so good!! They give you very small portions because it is actually extremely spicy and hard to eat in large amounts (unless you're a champ). Tea (self serve) is delicious but extremely sweet.
