A friend had this on his restaurant list for awhile so we decided to come here for lunch. This place is soo random, you probably wouldn't pass by it or know about it unless you live close by or were tipped off. That's where yelp comes in! Love that we get to discover places like this. Mind you I've never had Somalian food before, so I can't tell you if this is the best in the country or anything. My partner and I split the sport plate. We got the goat and chicken on rice and spaghetti. It was super filling and sooo comforting. I really loved the cinnamon tea. You wouldn't think spaghetti would work well but it does, almost like it's a chow mein. The size was huge, and we took home leftovers! Def consider the sport plate so you can bring lunch in tomorrow (it kept really well) the goat was really good, didn't taste weird or gamey. It was tender and flavorful. I had long waited to try Somalian food and I could not have chosen a better restaurant than Jubba. My experience from service to the food couldn't have been better. I visited on a Saturday with a group of friends and there wasn't much traffic. You get to order at the counter and then take a seat at the table of your choosing. We opted for the Beef Steak plate with Rice and the Chicken Plate with Chapati. The wait time was decent, about 10-15 minutes. However, the food was absolutely delicious. The beef had very deep flavors that imbued the rice and vegetables. The chicken too was wonderfully prepared and served with a salad and grilled vegetables. The prices are a little high but the portions are generous. We ordered two plates to serve the four of us. Our entire group was blown away by how good the meal was. This place is amazing. My GPS took me to the VTA station and I was not expecting to find such great food next to the train. This place is definitely a hole in the wall and a hidden gem. I ordered the sports plate with the goat, beef, spaghetti and chapatti. The goat was super tender and the plate was very flavorful overall. The spaghetti was peppery and the chappati was great as well, as it was slightly sweet. I threw the green sauce all over my food and it took it to another level. I never had Somalian food before so I did not expect a stir fry type mixed dish. Based on their plates and the look of the restaurant, it looks like it used to be a chinese take out type place. Wow the food here is AMAZING!! Jubba has long been a resident of my yelp bookmark page and finally today I managed to persuade my not-so-adventurous husband to check it out. Hubby was like..there is a restaurant here???!!! As we drove passed through residential area and entered the vta lightrail station where the restaurant was located. I replied, "yup, it's a hole in the wall." We walked in and there was only 1 table of 2 who was already eating (around 1130). Nobody to greet us but man it smelled good as there was a guy cooking behind the counter. He noticed us, greeted us and continued with his cooking business. 5 minutes later a woman came out from the kitchen and took our order. We seated ourselves and helped ourselves on the hot tea that was available towards the back of the restaurant. The tea was a bit weird, not my taste. It was very very very sweet and seemed to be mixed with some cardamom so it had very strong fragrance. The food came out pretty slow and we were marinating in the smell of whatever cooking behind the counter (the restaurant seems to have a very bad ventilation). I opened one of the door to let out some of the smoke/smell. When the food arrived (approximately 15 minutes later) we were pleasantly surprised by the huge portion! We ordered beef suqaar plate with chapati (it's like a cross of Indian Naan and flour tortilla), goat cutlet plate with rice, 1 Sambusa and 1 mandusa. Lots of meat on both the beef plate and the goat plate! Certainly smaller stomach can easily eat 1 plate for 2-3 meals!!! The meat was very very tender and very flavorful. For 13.25 a plate I didn't expect great quality meat, but wow, I was very surprised how tender the meat was and the goat was not very gamey, thus must be fresh and prepared well. The food seems simple but very flavorful, perfectly seasoned. The meat was stir fried with mixed veggies (onion, broccoli, green beans, bellpepper) reminded me of Chinese food but without the sauce. They are a bit oily but delicious! The green sauce reminded me of Indian spicy sauce a great complement to the meat. Sambusa reminded me of Indian samosa..but here it's filled with ground beef and onion. Very very good. Mandusa was this deep fried sweet pillowy dough, also very good. We spent 31 bucks for all the food, very very affordable for the amount of food and the quality. I had seen reviews on this place but I had an individual highly recommend it so I took the plunge and ordered it on door dash. I was glad I did. I had the chicken wrap which was very flavorful and extremely portioned well. No complaints on the size or flavor. I could only eat half. My husband had the goat cutlet and he left nothing. It's been a really really long time since I've had food as good as this. Living on my own, working long hours in the hospital, sometimes I just crave a homemade meal. No restaurant gives me that "home-cooked" meal feel, but Jubba did. I absolutely love their food. It's flavorful, always cooked right, served hot, and the portions are so filling (sometimes I even am able to get full and save the rest for the next day). I ordered the chicken suqqar and my husband got the beef suqqar. We also got the sambosas, which I usually am not a fan of at restaurant because it's always doused in oil and seems pre-fried. There's was so fresh. You can tell everything is cooked to order and not just sitting there. I'll be back again and again. It was also nice seeing families and kids dining on their porch, the ambiance was fantastic. If I can give more than 5 stars I would. read more

Nestled right in the parking lot of a light rail station, this no-frills small diner will not gain any points for fanciness, but they make it all up in quality!! 4 of us dined and shared the two appetizer of sambuso and a fried bread. The sambuso was spicy and flavorful and the fried bread wasn't terribly interesting. Would be better to sop up some sauce with. Also definitely a plus on the green sauce that comes with all the dishes. Main courses are hearty portions and while there aren't many options most either are chicken, beef, or goat. I was introduced to this place years ago, but haven't been back since. I totally forgot about it since I rarely ever go to this part of San Jose! The restaurant is located at a pretty random spot - right next to the VTA parking lot. You'd probably never think about eating there if you didn't see it on Yelp, ride the train, or come on a recommendation. It's the only place I've had authentic African cuisine and man is it good! My boyfriend usually gets the goat cutlet and I get the beef saqaar. I do recommend trying their sambusas as well. They're crisp and full of flavor and taste amazing with that mysterious green dip they pair everything with! The beef saqaar had a very unique flavoring - not too strong, but enough to keep you wanting more. Let me warn you that their portions here are HUGE. And for about ~$11.99 per plate, it's understandable. I had to take my order to go because I was too stuffed to finish the other half of my plate! They also give you free drinks, so you can just grab anything in their fridge at your convenience. They also serve complimentary hot tea, but it smelt like ginger...so I opted out of it. absolutely love jubba!! it's such an effort to get here since i live on the other side of san jose but it's so worth it. their food is consistently flavorful and fresh, and their chutney really is the star - but beware if you cannot handle spice, it is quite strong (coming from a pakistani!) i definitely recommend the sports plate which in my experience can serve up to 4 people, and that way you can enjoy multiple types of protein. my favorites are their chicken and beef. their chappati is also so good, reminds me of roti but so much better. i also love that their wraps are so reasonably priced. it's difficult to find wraps under $20 these days. their staff is always very kind and helpful even when they get super busy. the restaurant is a nice spot for a sit down dinner as well, it's got great ambience and service. plenty of parking since it's basically inside the train station. read more

Went here with my boyfriend the other night for dinner. It's my first time having Somalian food, and it was fantastic!!! Like other reviews have mentioned, it definitely has a hole in the wall vibe in terms of ambience, but the food is on point. Each order provides a main item, the choice of bread/rice/pasta, and a salad. Portion sizes were enormous. We started with the sambusas which looked similar in appearance to samosas, but these have deliciously tender spicy ground beef inside. For main courses, I got the goat with injera, and my boyfriend got the beef suqaar with chapati. Both meats had amazing savory flavor and were mixed with a mix of vegetables that were still slightly crunchy which is just the way I like it, and the veggies had taken on some of the nice umami flavor from the meats. The injera was less sour in flavor compared to at Ethiopian places I've been to, which I felt was pleasant. The restaurant also provides free ginger tea which had a lovely sweet ginger flavor. If you have never been to Jubba Somali, I highly recommend coming in and trying it. Although this is a true whole in the wall restaurant experience (located at the corner of Ohlone-Chynoweth station) the food here is absolutely fantastic and is something you can't get anywhere else. I've been coming here for years now and the food tastes just as good as when I started going, even with the increased exposure and popularity over the past couple years. My favorite food here is definitely the beef or goat suqaar but the wraps are delicious as well, and don't forget to grab some of their delicious chai tea tucked away in the corner. The only caveat I have about this place is that the food does take a while for it to come out, but it is mainly because they make everything made-to-order so there is a trade off. Somali food is something I've never eaten prior to coming to this spot and there seems to be no other Somali places in the South Bay but if you have never tried this type of cuisine I highly recommend you give it a chance! read more

Still just as amazing as I remember last year. Went in and got the sports mix plate w/ goat and chicken. The lady at the front taking our order was nice, but honestly every one here is nice. The cook even gave us extra sauce to eat with and for to go. I do love small business and small pop shops that really bring out the authenticity in their meals especially from different parts of the world. The goat cutlet is super tender and falls off the bone as you pick it up. All the spices in the plate combined with the yellow rice make for a great meal. I do like that they serve fresh lettuce and tomato yet they do include cooked veggies. I love the white yogurt like sauce. Beware the green sauce has quite a kick to it. I will be back again Jubba! The place is a hidden gem...literally. Following the waves app, took us through neighborhoods. For a long second, we thought we were lost. But the street takes you to a light rail parking lot, with light rail tracks above you. I had Ethiopian food, so was very curious of Somalian food. Upon walking in, we were greeted and invited to sit anywhere and to enjoy a hot ginger tea. Straight from the dispenser, it was very ginger strong~ginger spice with a hint of sweetness. I enjoyed it just that way. But a few in the party enjoyed it like a chai tea. Either way it was a first for me, and I highly enjoyed the 3 oz cups. It's complimentary and one can go up as many times as you'd like. One thing I enjoyed was the simplicity of the menu, the descriptions and pictures yay!!! Unlike Ethiopian, where I mostly had the stew like dishes (Doro wat, kittfo etc) on a round tray to share. Here it was individual plates (they do offer one dish that's to be shared for 2) My first impression is that the dishes contained a protein, a starch and a vege mix. Definetly the cuisine here was approachable for first timers. Oh they give you silverware. But if you want to "scoop" your food with a flatbread. Ask for their injera. Ethiopians version is a sour spongy type of thick crepe. While Somalia's version is thinner, light colored and not as sour, almost a hint sweeter. We ordered an array of dishes (sorry I provided pics, but can't remember all the dishes names, but it was all good). It came with a mini soufflé cup of a hot minty like sauce. I thought of it like a condiment like italian pesto or South American chimichurri. The group raved over it. But it was tooo spicy for me. But heard it was sooo delicious. I was lucky enough to talk to this lady in her cultural outfit. I'll assume she was either the owner or manager, as she directed her staff in the kitchen, served our plates, came back to check on us and basically ran the show. I was amazed how every different culture was enjoying the country's dishes. This business had a line out the door. Who knew Somalia food was here? I didn't but I'm glad they found a niche in the Silicon Valley. The space is tight and it is shaped like a crescent - not the best layout especially for larger groups. It got crowded midway through our dinner. There was only one lady taking orders and handling the cash register. Upon seating I found out I was in for a Somali treat. Roasted Goat Cutlet reminded me of a fajita. The meat was tender and well-marinated. Not gamey at all. It was a tasty dish. Injera was a good tool for picking up food and soaking up the sauce. I liked the flavor of Jubba Chicken but its sauce got all over my hands. I probably should have used a fork and a knife. Sambusa came out piping hot.
