Really wanted to love this place, but just couldn't. This restaurant is located in a strip mall, but behind Bin 54 Steak House. I drove past it twice before finding it. This place is totally dwarfed by Bin 54 because of the angles of this strip mall. So if it's your first time, just park when you see the giant Bin 54 in that side of the parking lot. The menu was more limited than listed online, so I was disappointed by that. This was April 2021, not April 2020 the height of the pandemic so we expected more during this time. We both ordered the crispy chicken appetizer, and mine was much spicier than hers. We were surprised there was such a difference in taste for the same dish cooked at the same time! They sat us in the rectangle room in the way way back of the restaurant. It was the two of us in there and this super loud 4 person ladies group that were shouting over each other about sex and other inappropriate dinner conservation. Because we were sitting at the start of the long bench in this room, we had the loud ladies on one side of us and then I could see the people sitting in their main dining room that had a direct eye line to my meal. So it was like a bad feng shui arrangement were I didn't feel relaxed. So between the hidden restaurant location, limited menu, taste difference for the same dish, and bad table location it just couldn't score any points with us. :/ read more

Definitely more on the Asian fusion side- my family and I are Chinese, and the food was a little too Americanized for us. The bbq pork belly buns were very salty on the inside and the outer dough wrapping was very stiff and didn't seem fresh. It definitely seemed like it was frozen before being served to us. The crispy chicken was just okay, the jujube bolognese was good, but the bulgogi was definitely the best. The bolognese flavor was delicious and there was plenty of beef that was cooked perfectly. Nice covered outdoor seating with heaters on the patio. My GF and I thoroughly enjoyed the appetizers and the entrees. She had the Seared Rice Noodles which had three different kinds of mushrooms in it. And the cocktail she had was spot on. I was already full after splitting the appetizers and starting on the great Jujube Bolognese but it was good I couldn't stop eating it. The staff was very friendly and attentive but not overly so. Woke up feeling like a truck hit me the next day and a friend told me they use MSG which is why she avoids the restaurant, I wish I had known. Though it doesn't look like much from the parking lot, the inside will surprise you! There's a beautiful back patio as well that I could see a party renting out and enjoying. The menu looked good. It's an Asian fusion type place (friends know I'm not usually into Asian fusion). Though it's a little pricy, I found the portion sizes to be pretty decent and shareable. Moreover, the quality of each dish was great! We ended up sharing two shareables (bok choy and a fried chicken dish) and a scallops entree. It was more than enough food for two! I dined here on a weekday (Thursday) to meet a work colleague by suggestion. This location is in non descriptive strip mall but once you're inside it's a different world. A relaxing environment and pleasant staff awaits. The co owner Raul makes it his business to greet everyone during our visit which is refreshing in this day and age. I travel a lot for work and bring clients to restaurants and I for one am happy to be back on the grind. First up we decided on soup and it was sifted and creamed giving it a supple feeling on your tongue. The richness isn't for the faint hearted or calorie conscience; we are here to have fun and boy did we enjoy. I didn't get a chance to try the wontons since I was recovering from dental surgery but from the smell and looks plus the fact that my colleague devoured it rings comeback when fully healed to me. We broke a cardinal rule when I eat out which is no one is allowed to order the same item, I couldn't convince my eating mate so we both got the crispy salmon (cooked to your liking) . This dish was cool perfectly and came out hot! Which I loved. With a hint of spice and soft sweet potatoes I can't say that I've had a combination like this before. I had a nice lunch here recently. It was probably my third time and I remember really enjoying it the first two times, but I hadn't been in years. I love Juju in durham, and it's one of my favorite restaurants so I had high hopes. In this most recently lunch. I was struck by how crowded it was. It's in a nondescript strip mall and there seemed to be a lot of people dining in for a random Thursday. Good for them. Unfortunately, it took a while to eat- we finally had to ask the server for our checks so we could get back to work. And we didn't linger or get apps or dessert. My friend loved her bahn mi sandwich with soy protein. I ordered the pad Thai with shrimp, which had way too much fish sauce. I could barely eat it, and I'm a huge fan of pad Thai usually. This was a fun date night restaurant. Let's start with the food. We ordered pork belly dumplings, fried goat cheese wontons, drunken noodles, crab stuffed trout and desserts. The portions are quite large. We took a bunch of our food home. All of the dishes were DELICIOUS. I've seen a lot of positive reviews about the dumplings, but I thought the fried wontons were bomb. We ordered 2 different kinds of drinks...xi and paper crane. Both were delicious, but I would definitely get the xi again. It was very light and refreshing. DUMPLINGS: We got 2 sets of dumplings (the Chicken, Shiitake & Chive and BBQ Pork Belly ones). They were okay. Definitely not the best I've had and not even close actually. The pork ones especially were falling apart which made them hard to eat. You can *literally* buy tastier dumplings at Costco... SMALL PLATES: The Hawaiian Ahi Poke was pretty good, albeit a bit overpriced. But this was probably the best part of the meal. The tuna tasted good and the pairings complimented well with it. The Cha Gio I would NOT recommend. The server described it as a plate where you can make your own lettuce wrap. Sounded good. The actual food was heavily fried and definitely not something you can easily make into a wrap just because it's paired with some lettuce...My boyfriend ate most of it although he didn't feel too well either after due to how fried the food was. The taste was also mediocre. It felt like it was missing some type of spice to give it real taste. LARGE PLATES: Lemongrass Grilled Hanger Steak. The steak looked nice but it was REALLY chewy. I had to chew it for like 10 minutes to get it to edible consistency. My friend got the steak with the peanut sauce it came with. I substituted for the chili sauce. Neither were really steak sauces and far too heavy, masking the flavor of the meat and not sitting too well in our stomachs. The Tamarind-Glazed Rack of Lamb was alright. Nothing special although the presentation is nice. DRINKS: My boyfriend and my other friend both got rounds of beers. They tasted good but more like one-sip-wonders. For the price we paid (~$150?) this was definitely not worth it. I left feeling like this place was a three but knocked it down another star because we left honestly feeling sick (all three of us, not just me). And an hour into the night, we felt worse. An hour after that, we felt EVEN worse. The food just did not sit well. My boyfriend thought he might get food poisoning--he felt THAT bad. The ambience of the place was also a bit older, not really a place to go out with college friends. And not a place I'd take my boyfriend out to (or want him to take me out to). Just not that vibe. First time visit to Jujube. I'll go through each step of the process. Hostess: Very pleasant and greeted us upon entry. Quickly seated us with all necessary items placed on the table to order. A+ Server: Very quick recognition even though he was in the middle of handling another table. As soon as he was able, he came and greeted us and offered us drinks. Throughout the evening he was prompt, courteous, attentive and patient. He could have come by less, but you can't fault a server for wanting people to have everything they need when they need it. This dude was top notch. I've seen recent reviews about poor service, but this was not our experience at all. A+ Ambiance: Low lit room with cool cultural pieces on the wall. Had the feel of what a small dim sum restaurant should in my opinion. Only issue is we had a very early reservation (5:45) and we were seated right next to the kitchen entrance/exit. I get someone has to sit there, but there were plenty of open tables at this time of night and there was a lot of traffic in that area. B+ Drinks: We didn't order fancy. House sauvignon blanc and a stout. Both tasted as they should and were at a fairly reasonable price. A Food: 2/3 items were very good. 1/3, not to our liking 1) BBQ Belly Dumplings: I don't know if I'm missing something here, but we really didn't enjoy these at all. I should have said something to the waiter to see if we could try something else. I don't know if they were undercooked or if this is how they are normally served, but they tasted of raw dough. It's like the top crinkled part didn't get steamed enough. Although I ate them because I hate to waste food, the raw taste of the dumpling was pretty offputting. The filling had decent flavor, but texturally not very pleasing. Again, being our first time, I'm not sure what the standard here is, but if its this, I wouldn't order this again. I absolutely love dumplings and this was a bit of a letdown. Everyone around us ordered the wantons and I wish we had too. D+ I don't give F's unless something is unsafe. 2) Calamari: Very good. It was lightly battered and fried and not greasy at all, which is how I prefer it. The sauces were very interesting and tasty. You get a spicy mayo, a tamarind sweet glaze, and a scallion/ginger green sauce. I thought all were solid and accompanied the squid nicely. A 3) Drunken noodles: From a flavor profile, excellent. It was umami driven, nice kick from spices and jalapenos, and the sauce was just the right balance between savory and sweet. Shrimp, mushrooms, and green onions were all cooked very well. My only qualm, even though I really liked the flavor, was the noodles were quite mushy. Again, I can't speak to the standard because this was our first visit, but maybe they are catering to the old denture crowd that makes up a decent percentage of CH. I kid obviously, but they seemed overcooked. All in all though, really solid dish. A- Overall Experience: Sans dumplings, this would get a solid 4.5/A in my book. The dumpling really struck out and left us a little disappointed. I give Jujube a 4.0 B/B+. I would definitely try it again. Thanks for the great service!!! read more

My favorites were the pork belly dumplings, bolognese, and banh mi. The service was amazing, 5 stars for that. It looked like they had a great alcohol selections as well, but we were there for lunch on a weekday so passed on that. The food was good for lunch, but the dinner menu looks very pricey and I'm not sure that it's worth the effort/price to come back here on a weekday for lunch (they don't serve lunch on the weekends). After years of living here, I finally made it to Jujube to celebrate a family member's birthday. But this spot isn't just good for celebrations, it's great for a nice dinner out or a spontaneous evening at the bar. I had the Gado Gado, and it was filled with some of my favorite veggies and a delicious peanut sauce. But my uncle swears by their king pao chicken (it's on the secret menu) and my cousin can't get enough of the ahi tuna appetizer. There's a great wine selection and the cocktails also look good. Let me just say thank goodness for Yelp, because I drive past this shopping center at least twice a week and have never noticed this little spot until I bookmarked it on Yelp. That said, this place is deceivingly large. It doesn't look like much from the outside but inside there's great ambiance, and much more seating room than expected; including an outdoor patio. 10 stars for service because the staff, from the very beginning, were very friendly and accommodating: We changed the number of people on our reservation last minute, had a million questions and odd requests for the kitchen, and had our check split 3 ways, all with absolutely no issue. All of the food was delicious. We started with the crispy calamari, some steamed pork belly dumplings, and chicken and basil dumplings; the latter are some slippery little suckers, but perfectly delicious. The entree portion sizes here and more than generous, so come hungry and expect to take home a doggy bag. I had the Pork Bulgogi and am definitely looking forward to digging into my leftovers. My friend got the Kung Pao Chicken sans peanuts and she had zero complaints. My other friend had the Jujube Bolognese and the Crispy Chicken Breast. I have never had brussels sprouts done as well as the ones that came with the crispy chicken. It also come with a sweet potato puree with ginger; I never expected those two to go together, but it works! Personally I think most of the noodle dishes could use a little more "kick", but I won't dock stars for that because (1) My family is Jamaican; we love our pepper, but it's not for everyone and (2) The waitstaff was unquestionably willing to bring us a platter of hot sauces to add as we so desired. I would like to preface this with saying that my rating has nothing to do with the taste of the food, at this point I have yet to try it. I came here tonight for the first time and was greeted by a very friendly hostess who was very accommodating with trying to help me find a seat close to an outlet. I let my waitress know when they came to greet me that it was my first time at the restaurant and I was simply met with an "okay." I was a little taken aback because in many other restaurant experiences in my lifetime I would usually hear an explanation about the menu or more about the restaurant. So I proceed to ask about the menu and what were some recommended or popular items. I was first told that everything was good, I prodded more, and then that everything was popular, I prodded more until finally she listed a few suggestions. I order an entree and then proceed to ask about the dumplings. Again, she let me know all three options were good, which is fair, so I pick two (a total of 8 dumplings). I then start to ask about small plates and I get cut off and told that "yeah that's a lot of food" to which I was immediately shocked. She tells me that she will leave a menu with me to look at and walks away. I was very shocked by hearing that and being cut off as I was asking about the menu and felt very disrespected in that moment. I have never been to this restaurant and wanted to try a variety of options and planned to take the rest home with me, and I also needed to work the rest of the evening so I wanted to put all my orders in at once. Although quite frankly, I don't feel at all that I need to explain that when I'm ordering my food at a restaurant. I don't feel that cutting someone off as they are ordering food and inquiring about the menu to tell them "that's a lot of food" is very appropriate. She comes back soon after and starts to describe a few other menu items to which at this point I say I will think about it. After that experience with my waitress I decide that I would like my food boxed up and I would eat at home, so I eventually request that from my waitress. I eventually get my food and check. At this point the waitress, if she at all noticed how her words had affected me, never said anything about our encounter. I pay for my food and leave. About 10 mins later I call the restaurant and ask to speak to a manager. Again, hostess that answered the phone was very nice. I get on the phone with the manager and I let them know that I had just recently left and that I had a bad experience and got my food boxed up to go home. I let her know that I felt disrespected. The manager asks me "how I felt disrespected?" It felt like an odd response, again would have expected at least feigned surprise or disappointment at the news. However, I proceed to tell the manager about the above encounter. The manager tells me that she has pulled up my receipt and sees what I have ordered and that she is viewing the footage. This also felt a bit of an odd response. She tells me that I did indeed order a lot of food and that their servers are not trained to "upsell" to customers just to get a high dollar bill and that the waitress was just telling me that it was a lot of food and that did she not leave me a menu to look at. I was shocked here again too, shocker. I continued on the point of cutting me off in my inquiry about the menu to tell me something like that and the manager tells me that she is viewing the footage and that "no one cut me off." I ask if there is audio within the footage because that seemed highly unlikely and how could she possibly be telling me that I wasn't cut off. I told the manager that to upsell is if my waitress would have been continuing to push items on me, but I was the one continuing to ask about menu items so this did not make sense. She continues to defend that there was nothing wrong with what happened but that they would speak about my not being properly explained the menu. At this point I realize that I should not continue to try to engage in this discussion and I asked if I there was a higher manager that I could speak with. The manager informed me that there was not a manager above her that this was as high as it gets. I ask if she owned the company, and she told me that I could email the owner. She gave the email address info@jujube.com and upon inspection of the website I see that the email address listed is info@jujuberestaurant.com although I have not verified whether or not both get you there, after my interaction I just felt skeptical. I have lived in Chapel Hill for the last 10 years and was really looking forward to finally trying this place out. I think it is ironic that the website states that "Customer Service Is Our Specialty." I had a very negative experience here and truly hope that the attitude and callousness of which my entire experience was handled was not racially motivated. read more
