This is one of the best Asian fusion restaurants that I've dined at in the Triangle. Had lunch with my mom there today. I had an excellent butternut squash soup, the Jujube Bolognese (hoisin braised shredded pork, scallions, rice noodles) and BBQ pork dumplings (to go). Mom had the Bok Choy & Shiitake Mushrooms (bean sprout, crispy shallot, garlic, chili served with steamed rice). Everything was cooked to perfection and the service was great. We we're running a little late so only had 45 minutes for lunch. I mentioned this to the maître d' as she seated us and she made sure that our server knew. Our server made sure to highlight the dishes that would be the quickest to prepare, so we could spend most of our time enjoying the cuisine vs waiting for our food. It was also very nice that they had two different loose leaf green teas to choose from. I would definitely return to try other offerings from the menu. They also had a full bar which is also a nice plus. A wonderful local restaurant offering authentic flavors from abroad. Jujube is tucked away in the Glenn Lennox shopping center but it's a gem. The ambiance is warm and relaxing, the perfect complement to their warm and wholesome dishes. Family and I have been coming here for 14 years. Food prep, menu depth, and staff, 5/5. It's a treat, so when I have the opportunity to go, I get a couple appetizers and entrees. The marinated hanger/flank steaks are especially great.The outdoor seating is lovely and a big draw for me, but it knocks off a star because despite being screened in, it was full of flies. It was only tolerable once the flies swarmed on the appetizer sauces that we left for an offering for the rest of the meal (like 17 flies). Some sort of mitigation system needs to be employed for the warm months. Favorite drink: Sweet Heat. Reminds one of orange chicken. Interesting takes on Asian dishes. I liked the appetizers better than the entrees, especially the BBQ pork dumplings appetizer. They are absolutely delicious: extremely flavorful, just a tiny bit soupy, with a melt-in-your mouth texture. I've had lots of authentic dumplings, and even though this is more of what I would consider "fusion" cuisine, they are some of the best I've had. I also tried the sweet potato fritters, which were pretty good too, but had a distracting ginger or green onion flavor to it (can't remember which). I found the entrees to be just alright for the price. I had the duck confit, which was a bit over-salted and not good as other duck dishes that I've had IMO, such as the classic roast duck preparation that you can find in Chinese restaurants. The radish cake that accompanied the dish was excellent, however. My boyfriend had the lemongrass hanger steak, which again was alright (a bit dry and lacking in flavor), but he liked it (so YMMV). The restaurant has a great atmosphere, but I would say the quality of your meal really depends on what you order. Overall, I'd give it a 3.5, rounded up to 4 for the atmosphere and excellent appetizers. read more

Not sure why Chapel Hill has so many quality Asian Fusion places but this one is near the top of the list that I've tried. Interesting cocktail selections and really nice selection of small and large plates to share. The dumpling selection is pretty interesting and prepared slightly differently for each. Some are fried like Gyotza and some are steamed like Chinese dumplings. Several different seating options, a good bar, and a lively kitchen make this place a great place to spend time. Delicious Asian Fusion! We started with the Pork & Cabbage Dumplings and Braised Pork Belly Steamed Buns. The Buns were the star imo, although they were unlike most pork belly steamed buns I've had. Instead of a separate steamed bun that encased pork belly slider-style, the pork filling was completely encased inside the bun and then steamed. This didn't seem to allow the bun casing to get fully cooked, keeping it doughy and soggy especially at the bottom where all the filling sitting. Despite the doughy texture, overall the flavor was amazing and I would get it again. The best entrée at the table was the Crispy Chicken Breast. It was so flavorful and juicy inside, and the bed of squash purée it sat on, along with the addictive and crispy brussel sprouts, made it a well-rounded and autumnal dish. The food is sooooooooo deeeee-liiii-cioussss. Oh mi goodness. The short rib and goat cheese wontons were out of this world.... they really need to offer a large plate of that!! The duck done two ways exceeded my expectations. I stopped eating duck after a bad experience so was weary to order this but so glad I did. It was definitely one of the best duck I've had in the Raleigh/Durham area. Oh, and the salad/veggies that were served with the duck- SO GOOD. The ambiance is a bit too bright for my liking and the service was just okay. But the food is on point so service and ambiance don't even really matter at a place like this. I used to eat here before the pandemic as my work was nearby, and I always loved it. Since COVID, we have gotten takeout a couple of times and the food is always fresh, well packaged, and delicious as always. They do curbside pickup and will place the food in your trunk or back seat so there's no contact. I always get the soy (vegetarian) banh mi (it's so good I would miss it if I try anything else), my husband gets the chicken banh mi, and occasionally we get the salad rolls, which come with a delicious peanut sauce. My waiter started off really nice, but about halfway through lunch he stopped smiling and generally stopped being pleasant. Not sure if he got bad news during our lunch, but it slightly reduced my opinion of Jujube. Overall, though, I will definitely be back. It's a great restaurant for business lunches. Really like the new look at JuJuBe. I've aways been a fan of the food and the service and it's still the same with the fresh new look. So it's great to see they are doing well, keeping current and even with the new look prices are the same as before. Love the Dumplings here! Best in the area. Also a fan of the Steak Ban Mi. They have a bunch of new cocktails which were great. Looking forward to when things warm up so I can dine on the patio. This was my second time at Jujube, I went here for my birthday. The staff was friendly and great at accommodating a large party (9). Overall, the food and experience were great! For appetizers you must have the dumplings! Steamed BBQ Pork Belly are delicious and a good size compared to other dumplings size I have had. The Pan-friend Bacon and collard greens were good as well but definitely enjoyed the pork belly more. We ordered crispy calamari as a small plate. This was my least favorite dish, the texture was more chewy than crispy and the flavor was too bland for my taste. It comes with 3 different dipping sauces which compensates for the favor but not for the texture of the calamari. We also had the Warmed & Crispy Kale salad, it was delicious. The texture was perfect, the flavors were rich but not overwhelming and the portion is big enough to share with 2 or 3 people. The larger plates deserve a 5 star rating! The Lemongrass Grilled Hanger Steak was cooked perfectly as I asked (medium-well). I was very satisfied with the portion although it's a smaller plate compared to the Crispy Joyce Farms Chicken Breast which also was cooked perfectly, not too dry for a crispy dish, the Brussels sprouts had a delicious sweet taste. Last but not least, they have the best sangria in Chapel Hill! It a bit of a spice flavor that is not overwhelming and I had to have more than one! My friend ordered the Xi which was very smooth on the palate and tastes like flowers/roses. This is more of a classy girly drink :) Here is what I recommend for anyone to try for dinner or a combination of these: Pork Belly BBQ dumplings, Crispy Kale, Lemongrass Grilled Hanger Stake, Crispy Joyce Farms Chicken (you can't go wrong with either one) and to cheer try the sangria or Xi. I gave an overall rating if 5 stars because the service was absolutely 5 stars. Our waitress paid close attention to our table and all my guest loved her kind and funny personality. That made me sad, because I used to love this place, I wonder if there's been a change of chef? the food used to be really special - but now the food is ordinary and honestly not very interesting, and the options on the menu seem to be a lot more limited. No crab cakes, no shrimp... kung Pao tofu was so blah, the bolognese, which used to be great is now very meh. And I used to love their sangria - it had a marvelous unusual cardamom flavor - that flavor isn't there any more. One dish was described by our waitress as "really for mushroom lovers" - but when it came we were looking at each other like "huh?" because it was almost all noodles, with not many mushrooms at all, and the mushrooms themselves were nothing special, I think they were canned. It seems like they're using a lot of cheaper ingredients but still charging primo prices. We asked for chopsticks, and they brought two pairs (for a group of seven) and said that's all they had. What?? It makes me sad, because this used to be a favorite for us, a place to go for special occasions - now I don't think we'll be back. read more

When I went here with one of my friends we had a Pan Asian smorgasbord going on. We both order noodles, I got the stir fried rice noodles with NC shrimp & mushrooms-- I forget exactly which one she got. In addition to that we ordered about 3 appetizers-- the sweet potato fritters, sui mai and the crispy scallion calamari with 3 sauces. All were tantalizingly delicious. Dipping over here and some fritter over there-- we were in food heaven! We sat at the bar seating near the kitchen which was a lot of fun since we got to watch them cook all of this wonderful food. The tall chairs were very comfortable and cushioned. We had so much fun-- eating, drinking, watching the chef cook with his staff and just laughing about anything. read more

I saw this place a month ago after eating at Bin 54 (it is kind of hidden in Glen Lennox) and of course came to Yelp to see if it had been reviewed. After reading the good reviews, I decided it was worth trying and I'm so glad I did. I started with the pan-fried pork and cabbage and it was fried just right; there wasn't a lot of oil, so it tasted light. For my main dish I had the shrimp and crab cake, and while I've never had shrimp in a crab cake before, it was delicious. The sweet potato curry that came with it was excellent; sometimes curry can be overwhelming, but not here. The service was efficient and friendly, and the hostess seated us quickly. I wish it was a little brighter inside, but I understand the mood they were going for. I can't wait to go back for another meal, as my friends dish, the lemongrass steak, looked even more delicious than mine! read more

Updated review 2 years later. I gave this place 5 stars before please read my heart felt review. Well, went there tonight for my 18th wedding anniversary. Made arrangements and notified them in advance on open table and called two weeks ago to make sure they knew it was an anniversary dinner and that I have a dairy allergy and asked if they could make a dairy free desert. Result - nothing Tried to seat us beside the wait station computer for placing orders. Zero Recognition that we are there for our anniversary even after calling and speaking to someone in the front of the house. Randomly after dinner the owner came and spoke to us later but simply just talked about her staffing issues and other stuff, no recognition again that we were there to celebrate. Food was good as always, the new wait person was decent and Pleasant but left they are extremely disappointed. I called back to speak to the owner and she said she checked her notes and saw that yes it noted that it was my anniversary but had no notes about dairy free desert and made no attempt to make it right. No, hey I'm sorry we drop the ball we usually do this for people on there anniversary or thank you for coming to celebrate with us. I got nothing, waiting on a callback to make it right or the last I ever spend a dime there. Fingers crossed they make it right because this was our go to restaurant for all special occasions but if this is how they treat customers who had spent thousand plus dollars at their place over the past three years?? Well, I got my food at 7:15. 45 mins late!!! Disclaimer, this is during covid and they are only open for take out. The two women running the food out and dealing with the customers must have said I'm sorry 200 times to those waiting. They were dealing with a totally new way to serve and organize their restaurant and I will say they did it with grace and style and made the very best of the situation they could. When I got home I found their food the be perfectly cooked, I mean it was on point and they gave us some mousse for free for our wait. Please anyone reading this patron this restaurant! To;dr: Excellent service, very attentive wait staff, Would recommend for a filling, authentic Asian meal. Several different and varied food options. Lychee iced tea was great, I'd definitely get that again. Food was good, and there are many healthy options which I appreciate, but I didn't think the flavors were very strong, as I think it could've used a little more spices. The dumplings were delicious and fresh, the spring roll appetizer is pretty authentic. I had a noodle dish which was pretty plain and my friend had the salad, which was good but a smaller portion. Birthday celebration gone bad. I have been a loyal patron of this restaurant for many years and will not be going back. After booking a special occasion reservation online, I called ahead to make sure it was okay to bring a birthday cake in for my daughter's birthday celebration. The host I spoke with on the phone advised it was okay as long as we brought our own utensils to cut the cake and plate it ourselves -- great, it's an inconvenience but that works for me we'll take that responsibility on. When arriving at the restaurant and upon check-in, the female hostess who clearly did not like our birthday cake, rudely communicated we were going to be charged a plating fee per person and there were no exceptions. I advised her that I called ahead and was told differently. She then proceeded to promote an argument with me in the middle of the restaurant in front of my family and other patrons. It was completely unprofessional and my entire family was offended. She kept repeating that their hefty 'plating fee' is industry standard and all Chapel Hill fine dining restaurants charge the same thing. From my perspective it was a completely inappropriate way to handle the situation and I didn't appreciate the tone or abrasive communication she was using. I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone for special dinners or otherwise. I gave them a pass last year when they started charging for standard water service at the table, but now this with the poor customer experience and service -- particularly from a restaurant that labels themselves 'fine dining' per the rude hostess. read more

Service is excellent, friendly and attentive. With a model of Asian tapas, there is a bit of everything to taste at Jujube. Classics like pork and cabbage dumplings, which we tried, are juicy and crispy-pan-fried. If you'd rather the avante garde, try bacon and collard or basil chicken. We followed dumplings with an oyster special. Five crispy oysters were bedded over sweet pepper coulis and around a crab-stuffed sweet pepper. Crunchy almonds made me think romesco and taste fruit chutney. Fresh fish unmasked by complenetary sweet. Stark contarst followed, with an Asian take on Bolognese. Rich, simply, ample-a hearty finish to more delicate openers. I could imagine a hit of acid and heat in the dish, but don't need one. A good option for mid-cost modern cuisine. I was overall very pleased with my visit here. After driving by Glen Lenox every few days it finally dawned on me that this is where Jujube was located-in the same tiny shopping center as the misery known as Time Warner Cable. Who knew something lovely could blossom in that place? The restaurant is nicely equipped with a long bar and regular dining tables, some with booths along the wall. It was narrow but not claustrophobic feeling. There is also an outdoor dining space that looked inviting in warmer months. This place was pretty busy the day after Christmas so I was glad I had a reservation. Our host and hostess were very cordial and relaxed and our server was on point with the kind of service I like. Subdued but friendly, efficient but not imposing. She brought out waters quickly and gave us a few minutes to look at the menu. They were unfortunately out of my husband's first choice of habanero cider but their recommendation of a replacement was useful though not particularly spicy. I had the Love Child and as other Yelpers can attest, it was delicious. It was dark and mysterious looking but tasted light and refreshing without being overly sweet as many fruity cocktails can be. We started with the Summer or Salad rolls and I was happy they could make them vegetarian without the shrimp. Although they are decidedly different from most summer rolls, I really liked this version. They are a more complex version with a sophisticated array of spices accompanied by a luxurious peanut sauce. This is not the cloying sweet peanut sauces you find at many Vietnamese restaurants. Tightly packed and expertly rolled, they were easy to handle without a bulk of the contents falling out like at other places. For my entree I had the Gado Gado which has sautéed vegetables, tofu, Szechuan black bean and a spicy peanut sauce. It was very good though the sauce was heavy. It's the same sauce as the peanut dipping sauce for the salad rolls. I ate about half and saved the rest since it was very filling. It sticks to your ribs, as my grandmother would say! My husband got the Grilled Teriyaki Tuna dish which has sautéed bok choy, mushrooms, green beans & cabbage, wasabi aioli and sushi rice. He felt for $27 the piece of tuna should have been more substantial and could use more wasabi and less aioli but otherwise enjoyed it. We were both offered complimentary jasmine rice with our dishes but we didn't try it. After dining here I'm really interested in trying out their sister restaurant Juju in Durham which has a small plate approach so I can try more items without committing myself to one large dish. All in all it was a nice dinner in a darkened, candle-lit room which made for a great date night out for us. read more

We made a point to make a reservation when we heard the glowing review, and we weren't disappointed. The service was great and the food was fantastic. Have tried Jujube multiple times over the years including hosting parties. Came in this evening with wife for our date night. Seated right away a hostess with a nice smile. Things went down hill from there. We reviewed the menu (no significant change with usual items), ready to order dinner and drinks but no one came by to take orders. The restaurant was not that busy, wait staff walking around and by, but no acknowledgement, no "we will be right with you", anything. We left after 10 minutes of waiting. Never coming back here again! We have too many good restaurants in Chapel Hill and Durham area now to deal with poor service. read more
