Not as good as before and I recommend only stop by only when you're in the area. No need to drive all the way just to get the banana bread from here as it's no longer one of the best on the island (as in previous years). This is my favorite banana bread in the island. But today's experience prompted me to give it a 1 star. WORD OF CAUTION - If you're planning to drive here from the Lahaina side, be very careful. It's not intended for drivers who are afraid of heights. The windy and very narrow roads make it difficult. For most part, it's a one lane road on the edge of the cliff without guardrails. When I finally made it to Julia's, it is now an honor system. Payment is through Venmo and other similar services. You can pay cash but make sure you have exact change. Again, this is unattended. It makes it impossible to pay by Venmo when there's no cellular services. At least they should provide a WiFi. In the end, I drove 2 hours for nothing. I missed the days when they had a stall on the side of the road near Kapalua. Never again I will drive to this place. Scenic but scary. read more

After mistakenly driving on the backside of West Maui (oops), on our way back out we stumbled upon this stand. It said it was "World Famous", and after that way-too-scary West Maui drive, I wanted to have something to show for it. We walked in and there wasn't even anyone there - it was all on the honor system. I grabbed a loaf, put my $20 in, and hoped for the best. I had LOTS of different fruit breads in Maui, but this was my favorite. The bread was labeled on the shelf as banana/mango bread, but it tastes more banana-y to me. Either way, it is SO moist and I was so glad it came in a big size. It lasted me my whole time on the trip, on the plane ride home, and a few days afterward. If I was smarter, I would have bought some at the blowhole, and saved myself the scary West Maui drive. But hey, now I have a story to tell. read more

Bread Silence I still love their Liliko'i butter and would eat it with a Goat, on a Boat that's floating in a Moat--but a recent transaction with their website has left a terrible taste in my mouth. Here's a timeline of events: 1) June 7th, 2023, I placed an order for $140 worth of items and paid for them via PayPal. For the record, I understand that they only ship on Mondays, so that would've been the 12th. 2) The 12th comes and goes, and no email stating that anything shipped. Again, yes, I read on their website that they don't always have enough stock, so there may be delays. Ok. Fair enough. 3) The next Monday (19th) comes, and no word; I then email them on the 20th and ask for a status report. Crickets. Then the following Monday (26th) comes and goes and still no word. 4) Monday, July 3rd, comes, and still no word. On the 4th, I emailed them and asked to cancel the order and please refund my money. More crickets. 5) July 5th, I finally filed a claim with PayPal. And then, finally, today, July 15th, they "resolved" the case and refunded me my money. While I did get made whole again, there's something disturbing about a business that gladly takes customer's money but refuses to provide any customer service. So, while I'll gladly buy their products next time I'm visiting Maui, I'll never do business with them via the web again. read more

Whether you stop at the pop-up (and hang with Andre and see the mongoose show) or make your way all the way past the one-lane roads to the green shack and meet one of Julia's nieces, you'll be delighted. When I tried to get Aunty Sandy's banana Bread a couple days ago, the sign for "sold out of banana bread" was going up just as I was walking up to the stand. I tried to get some MamaLei's at Nakalele Blowhole, there was no stand so I assume that she sold out and left too. I saw the stand for Julia's Banana Bread and managed to get there with 2 loaves left. The gentleman to got in line before me said that if I wanted one, he would get one loaf, if not, he would buy both. So we both left with one bread at $15 per loaf. Yes! I got my hands on the last one! The gentleman selling the bread was funny, he introduced me to his friend Stanley the mongoose and fed him and his other mongoose friends some shortbread cookies. So I tried it in the car and was completely disappointed. Yes it was fluffy, but it lacked banana flavor. And all I could taste was the burnt flavor, so it was baked too long or at too high of a heat setting. I stopped at Napili market on my way back and picked up some banana bread and coconut from the market and they were both better than this one. I even did a blind taste test with the family and one they all liked better was from the market. My family said my banana bread was better than Julia's too (Maybe I need to bake a bunch of my banana bread when I get home and sell it roadside too....haha). This review if for Julia's pop-up stand located on Hwy 30 at Mile Marker 38! On your way to Nakalele Blowhole, slow down as you approach Mile Marker 38, and you'll see a tent in the small parking area on your left side for Julia's Banana Bread. I didn't notice it on our way up, passed it on our way down, and I made my husband turn around! I'm so glad I did! Papa Dre was there to welcome us with so much aloha AND samples! He also had jokes and brought out his friends (the mongoose). Aside from all the fun, the banana bread was delicious, moist, and perfectly sweetened. Been coming since 2007, 100% worth it. We bought a total of 3 loaves, honor system and not wanting to short change the vendor, I dropped $60 in the money box. We go to Maui every year, so I am going to take this opportunity to address some of the comments others posted: - You need to go early if you want to score bread. Don't roll up at 4pm. - People said their quality went downhill, I say that was an anomaly. I bought three loaves, ate one during our 2 weeks stay, froze the other two. Got back, defrost, still tastes moist and awesome. - Sure, there is another better bread out there, but Julia is up there. The bread and the drive to get it is part of the experience. - I have a solution to those complaining about the prices, stay home and make your own. I bought a $17 loaf of non-Julia bread at another coffee shop. It was not as good and smaller. $3 more and good bread, we are not complaining. - A word of advice to anyone making the drive: be careful. The last stretch of the road leading to the shop in a narrow one lane road with traffic going both directions. Drive slow and be courteous. So yes, this stand is in one of the more remote spots on Maui. Possibly why the prices are a little bit more. I've been by the stand about 7 times amongst 4 different visits now and the bread is always sold out so I can't rate it. All that was left last month was a few passionfruit/ lilikoi butters in small glass jars. Big mistake was only buying one, should have bought them all. I'm at home in a rainy 58 degree Oregon and just had it on some toast. Absolutely amazing. I've been to Hawaii 13 times, this is a first for me. Highly highly recommend it, yes banana bread is sold at a few places, we enjoy the half way to Hana spot. We were so excited to try this since it came highly recommended, but the banana bread we got today was raw in the middle. What wasn't raw tasted great, however. Just make sure the middle is risen when you buy yours, we just wanted to grab one and go and should have recognized the telltale slump in the middle of the loaf we purchased. The owners shouldn't be selling raw loaves though, anybody who bakes knows what an underbaked cake looks like! The Banana Bread is awesome, the drive in is amazing and people are so nice, highly recommend this. Julia's is cash, so remember to bring some, I showed up with cards and not enough cash, but Cynthia found a way to make it work. I was there early, so I would advise counting on credit cards should be a back-up plan only. Now, the road in takes patience, think a bit more challenging than the road to Hana. Beautiful scenery, places to pull off and get pictures plentiful, but some stretches are single lane and if you meet another car one of you will have to back up to a pullout. If you are use to mountain roads, no big deal. Also, a few things to think about based on some of the negative feedback. I was charged $15 per loaf but would have gladly paid $17. They are a local business and their costs go up too. They are open until they sell out, which I was told happens everyday. So plan accordingly, I got there at opening time, not late afternoon. We were driving over to the Nakalele Blowhole when we initially passed by Julia's Best Banana Bread located in front of the stop for the Nakalele Lighthouse. I had it marked on my Google Map of places to go when we were in Maui, however, it showed further down the highway from where we saw it. That was good in our case as we weren't going past the blowhole that late afternoon. We decided we would stop on the way back. I am not sure if they only take cash. For once, we had some on us so we used that in case. There are free samples of the banana bread, Maui honey, Passion-fruit Butter, flavored nuts, and a few other things I can't remember. There were also fresh juices available to buy. According to the gentleman who sold us the banana bread, his grandmother is the one who cooks the banana bread and she had made 100 loaves for that day. We were the 95th loaf. The banana bread was $9.00 a loaf and well worth it! We had some other banana breads on the island and nothing compared. All the other samples we tasted were fantastic too, but we were limited on time on the island and space in our luggage. We ate the banana bread over the two days we were in Lahaina. Seriously, the best banana bread that I've ever tried. It's so moist and soft!!! We drove alllll the way to the little shack house to buy the bread and we were happy we did. The man will give you samples of everything and maybe even a banana or two from their tree that he picked earlier that day. The shack is a bright green color and you'll see the signs in the left side of the road. The loaves are $9 and lemonade $7 (also very good). they have 3 flavors of lemonade ( passion fruit, guava and pineapple ) There is also a little stand off of the highway near the blowhole that sells Julia's banana bread if you don't want to make the trek all the way to the little shack. Hands down, the best banana bread I've ever had! It's fluffy, buttery, addicting, flavorful, and spongey. A beautiful cross between angel food cake and pound cake, never had anything like it!
