Came here to try out the famous stick donut. It's a cute, old-school bakery that makes you feel the history of the place. I went early to make sure they didn't run out. There were RACKS of them!! In addition to customers lining up to buy them. That's how you know they're good! One lady told me that the butter rolls are good too, so I bought some of them to try. The butter rolls were super soft and had a nice sweetness to them. I enjoyed them! The stick donut was AMAZING! I enjoyed pulling it off the stick. The glaze is delicious and the donuts have a crispy outside and soft, fluffy inside. So yummy! I'll definitely be back for more! There were three sweet ladies working in the store. One was getting what seemed to be phone orders prepared and the other two were checking people out. They take credit card in addition to cash! This place is an institution in Maui that is run by a couple of folks who are very patient and nice. In an old grocery store turned famous for the doughnuts in a stick, it's worth a stop to support a local business that offers a big variety of treats. Malasadas, cream puffs and a variety of breads that are fluffy and tasty looking. We lucked out as there was only a couple of folks in front of us. On the weekends, I imagine it is busy. They have a small parking lot which was full of folks NOT in the store. Ugh! Luckily we were early which meant plenty of street parking. We tried all of our treats and my favorite is the vanilla custard malasada. They are generous with their filling and each of the items are fairly light. Oftentimes fried items become heavy once cooled. Not the cases here. Support this great local business! read more

This place is a hidden gem in upcountry Mauí! Komodo's donuts are always very delicious especially the guava donuts, long Johns and malasadas, etc. My favorite is the strawberry filled donut because the strawberry has chunks of strawberry in it. The long johns are full of thick vanilla crème and guava is fresh, fruity and bright. The people working at this fine establishment are great at getting orders done fast and efficient. Small old school Hawaiian bakery. Went at 7:15 on a Monday morning in October and there was no line and easy parking. Service was fast and friendly. Wanted to try lots of items so got some stick donuts--cinnamon sugar, sugar (glazed), and coconut, and then got some guava malasadas, strawberry jelly donut, cream puff, and butter roll. I only ordered the cream puff because others said how good it was--not generally a huge cream puff fan but man this cream puff was so so good! The puff was perfect and plenty of cream filling inside. My other favorites were the coconut stick and butter roll. We got a single butter roll but after tasting it I wish I had gotten a whole bag of them. The malasadas were ok otherwise--I think I compare all malasadas to Leonard's on Oahu and still have found no equal. I'd still go back for the other items though! read more

We heard rave reviews about this place and tried to arrive before the 1 PM closing time. I think we did arrive at approximately 12:50 PM. The shelves were completely bare. There was one package of day old donuts and two packages of cookies that had been made earlier. I opted for the cookies since they looked better than the-day old donuts. This bakery is iconic for the Makawao area! The staff is friendly and efficient. The store is absolutely warm and welcoming. I enjoy the vibes of this bakery as much as their baked goods. My absolute favorite item is the glazed stick donut! There isn't a glaze donut that beats it in my opinion. They are so consistent. Never had a bad visit. This is by far my favorite bakery in Maui. Every time I visit Maui, I have to stop here for the cream puffs. I'm not a fan of the guava malasadas as they are too sweet for me but nothing compares to the cream puffs here. Service is always friendly and last time (June 2025) when I picked up a box of 6 crème puffs and asked the gentleman at the counter if I can keep them out as I'm going to explore the kula region for the day, he said a stern no as they are full of fresh custard. I still remember his sweet smile when I said no problem as I'll eat them all right away! If you are in Maui, you have to stop here. If you like sweet things, then get the famous sticky doughnuts on a stick or the guava malasadas but I come here for the crème puffs and they are better than any bakery in Paris or LA for me! I have been going here since I was a little kid. My grandparents were friends of the Komoda's. I am so happy they have stayed in business. It is one of the few remaining places from my childhood, it brings back fond memories of my grandparents. One thing that has always been constant is the flavors. The stick donuts and the malasadas my favorite is the plain or the guava filled one. The cream puffs are also great. Then you have the butter rolls. I mean it's all good. The inside of the store has also remained a constant so it is a really cool old building and again brings back a lot of memories. The service has always been great. Over the years. But it's not the same as the old days. But that was when Maui was a much smaller place and makawao was an old cowboy town. Not the tourist destination it is these days. That what makes this place special in all the change and modernizing it is the one place that has stayed constant with great product and service. My daughter said they're known for the Stick Donut. She loves it so we purchased a total of 15 sticks to bring home. The worker said they're also known for the Cream Puff with Vanilla Custard Filling. I remember trying this when employees from Maui used to fly to Oahu and bring it for our department...didn't know they bought it from here. It's soooo good...wish I could've brought some home but this place closes at 1pm and I fly out at 9:30 pm tonight...I'm so sad. Well, I bought one each for the 3 of us so we're satisfied but still sad. We brought the Stick Donut home and gave to a few people. Stopped by here with my family after a Strawberry picking trip to Kula Country Farms. I'd say it was around 10 on a Saturday when we got there. I wasn't sure what would be available but figured I'd see what they had. They do have a parking lot but it was pretty full. Fortunately, someone was leaving just as I pulled in. Someone honked at me on Baldwin avenue for waiting to let the person exit the parking lot. No aloha. Very old school inside. Mom and pop all day. Their case of donuts and pastries was almost empty. I ordered 5 sticks of malasadas, one for each of us. The employee repeated to me that my order was for 5 sticks. They put them into a to go box, I paid at the counter, and we went outside to eat them (found a place to sit on a storefront porch edge across the street). The malasadas were very tasty. They pull apart into small bite size pieces. About 5 or so to a stick. They are sugar coated and soft on the inside, a little crispy on the outside. Maybe because of when I came, but unfortunately they weren't warm or hot. Also unfortunately...they shorted me by one stick so I only received four. And by the time I noticed, they were sold out already. We had ordered, then a lady came right after us and ordered the last one, and another guy after her tried to order but was told they were out. They did have some other bagged fresh items that looked tempting (butter rolls). I may have to try those next time. I'll be back, but I may need to come earlier to get warm malasadas and remind them to check my order to make sure they counted right. read more

I got the cream puff and the malasadas. I really enjoyed the cream puff and the shell was super light and fluffy. The malasadas were nice and fluffy too! The cinnamon sugar was coated nicely on them. We got there at 7am when they opened, and they were already busy, and we were able to cash out pretty quickly. If I was able to go again with more time, I would want to try their cakes. They looked pretty good and a lot of people seemed to be buying them. There is also some street parking available for all the shops around, which is nice. read more

These are the best malasadas on Maui. Get a variety, but don't miss out on the glazed ones! All the other tourists will wait in line for something they saw on social media, but meanwhile you can walk in here - no lines and no nonsense service - and pick up a few bags of malasadas. We went around 9 on a Monday and there was plenty of items to choose from. They're most popular for the stick donuts and cream puffs. We got a chocolate and custard cream puffs and a bag of a dozen butter rolls. The cream puff was big and not too sweet. The shell is chewy rather than crisp and reminds me of my mom's version of choux pastry. The custard was simple and tasty. My favorite item has to be the butter rolls hands down. These are fluffy and shaped like popovers or Yorkshire puddings. They're buttery, slightly sweet and so addictive. I ate two on the drive away from the bakery. Definitely get these. Parking is street and can be a little challenging later in the day. read more

Unfortunately, we had a very negative experience with the staff here and I'd have to actively recommend against this place, regardless of its quality, uniqueness, or history. My friend wanted to try a malasada from Komoda but our group didn't have cash. They have a $10 minimum here that isn't really mentioned anywhere until you get to the cash register. An older woman was ringing us up, she became immediately and visibly annoyed when my friend asked about using card. All she said was $10 minimum, nothing else, and refused to make any eye contact with us. When my friend asked her how much the malasada was, the woman just aggressively tapped on the register display instead of telling her $5.50. She continued to give curt replies when we tried to ask her how much other pastries cost to make up the difference. We ended up choosing to leave after a few rounds of this, because it was genuinely pulling teeth at that point. I can understand if this interaction is frustrating for the staff, or if someone was just having a bad day. But neither of those reasons justify such hostility towards someone who is clearly a new customer. If this really is a recurring problem, and dealing with this interaction is so excruciating, I suggest the bakery: 1. Display the $10 minimum more prominently 2. Display the prices of the baked goods alongside the name. 3. Consider charging an extra fee for card purchases under $10 alternatively. 4. A "locals only" sign if you really dislike non-locals so much. I hope the quality of service improves in the future, though I can't say I'll be back to experience it. read more

Nice workers, nice bakery, nice food. On our first visit to the bakery we arrived at 11am and were met with shelves that were almost completely empty. On our second visit, we woke up early and arrived while the bakery still had much to offer. So be advised: come early or leave empty/handed. That being said, I don't know that this location has any distinguishing features. My family and I ordered ten or so items, but were not blown away by any. The creams and filling were very good, but the dough of the pastries was so dense that the malassadas came out to be slightly above average overall. Same goes for the stick and the classic jelly doughnut. I do not regret coming here, but I would not say this is a must visit. Quality/Quantity - Yes, I finally made it to this bakery. We come to Maui annually and this is the first time we have made it here when they are open! And at noon to top it off! Komoda Bakery is a locally owned, family run, Maui institution with their roots going back to 1916 having originally started as a restaurant in the spot where Polli's now stands. That's over 100 years of serving our community folks! It wasn't until 1947 that they started their transition into what is now the bakery and general store. Komoda's, as the locals call it, is famous for their stick donuts -- deliciously glazed balls of donuts, grouped together in fives on a long bamboo skewer. This makes it on-the-go friendly and easily shareable with friends and family. They are also know for their malasadas and their cream puffs which still uses the same original family recipe to this day. You'll also find typical bakery fare like long johns, pies, cakes, cocoa puffs, butter rolls, bread, cookies, and more! The store still looks the same after all these years and has not seen any major renovations. It truly feels like you've stepped back in time as they are unapologetically old school. Trust, the mom and pop vibes here are damn strong -- and that, for me, is part of their charm. They remain an incredibly popular amongst locals and visitors alike. So much so that they often sell out of many items early in the day. They also go on vacations throughout the year, so don't be surprised to find them closed with a note on the door. When I entered the bakery line, it seemed the racks along the line to get to the counter, only had a few items, after I attacked my first round of goodies from the counter, I went in line a second time, more items were added to the racks along the line,I am not sure, but it seemed to be day old packaged stick donuts. you can also find pies and related bread items. The stick donuts, sorta like donut holes, but with a thicker crust, yet the center is like a classic yeast donut. Best eaten that day, overnight they are not as good. Highly recommended. I also tried the cream puff and cocoa puff. The egg custard filling was delicious, but after eating the cocoa puff, I will choose the cocoa puff over the cream puff. Be careful not to inhale the powdered sugar! Finally the guava malasadas, these are more bread like and a little lighter then other malasadas but still delicious. The service was quick and they were nice and put together my order. There is a small parking lot next to the building. read more
