    Made it!

This place is an institution in Maui that is run by a couple of folks who are very patient and nice. In an old grocery store turned famous for the doughnuts in a stick, it's worth a stop to support a local business that offers a big variety of treats. Malasadas, cream puffs and a variety of breads that are fluffy and tasty looking. We lucked out as there was only a couple of folks in front of us. On the weekends, I imagine it is busy. They have a small parking lot which was full of folks NOT in the store. Ugh! Luckily we were early which meant plenty of street parking. We tried all of our treats and my favorite is the vanilla custard malasada. They are generous with their filling and each of the items are fairly light. Oftentimes fried items become heavy once cooled. Not the cases here. Support this great local business!

So worth the drive!! Everything was amazing and the staff was patient with us as we weren't sure what to get.

This place is a hidden gem in upcountry Mauí! Komoda Store and Bakery is an iconic, historic bakery in Makawao, Hawaii, famous for its fresh, old-school pastries like cream puffs, stick donuts, and guava malasadas! Love the fact this is still a family owned business (since 1916). There is lots to explore in the small quaint town of Makawao. Love the mom and pop shops, boutiques, art galleries and local restaurants. After ordering, we found a nice little spot to eat our delicious pastries. The vibe of the town is charming with an old western feel. My only recommendation is to get there early (before 10AM). They do sell out very quickly. This is a must stop if you're visiting Mauí!

Komodo's donuts are always very delicious especially the guava donuts, long Johns and malasadas, etc. My favorite is the strawberry filled donut because the strawberry has chunks of strawberry in it. The long johns are full of thick vanilla crème and guava is fresh, fruity and bright. The people working at this fine establishment are great at getting orders done fast and efficient. The setting was nice and it made it feel like a store in the past.

Small old school Hawaiian bakery. Went at 7:15 on a Monday morning in October and there was no line and easy parking. Service was fast and friendly. Wanted to try lots of items so got some stick donuts--cinnamon sugar, sugar (glazed), and coconut, and then got some guava malasadas, strawberry jelly donut, cream puff, and butter roll. I only ordered the cream puff because others said how good it was--not generally a huge cream puff fan but man this cream puff was so so good! The puff was perfect and plenty of cream filling inside. My other favorites were the coconut stick and butter roll. We got a single butter roll but after tasting it I wish I had gotten a whole bag of them. The malasadas were ok otherwise--I think I compare all malasadas to Leonard's on Oahu and still have found no equal. I'd still go back for the other items though!

Yummy!!! One of the few places on Maui that you need to get to early before they sell out. We arrived around 8:30AM and they had plenty to choose from. The line moves quickly. The ladies behind the counter were not friendly, but not rude. Just felt like you were a number. The doughnuts on a stick were fresh and warm and yummy. Great with coffee from down the street. No seating. There is limited parking in the town but open spots the earlier you arrive.

Our cousins live down the street from Komoda Store Bakery so we always stop in when visiting Maui. They have been in business since 1916! I love their butter rolls! Their donuts and pastries are delicious, as are their hamburger and hot dog buns. Make sure to stop in if you are in the area!

I have been going here since I was a little kid. My grandparents were friends of the Komoda's. I am so happy they have stayed in business. It is one of the few remaining places from my childhood, it brings back fond memories of my grandparents. One thing that has always been constant is the flavors. The stick donuts and the malasadas my favorite is the plain or the guava filled one. The cream puffs are also great. Then you have the butter rolls. I mean it's all good. The inside of the store has also remained a constant so it is a really cool old building and again brings back a lot of memories. The service has always been great. Over the years. But it's not the same as the old days. But that was when Maui was a much smaller place and makawao was an old cowboy town. Not the tourist destination it is these days. That what makes this place special in all the change and modernizing it is the one place that has stayed constant with great product and service. I hope that my family and friends can keep enjoying these delicious treats.

My daughter said they're known for the Stick Donut. She loves it so we purchased a total of 15 sticks to bring home. The worker said they're also known for the Cream Puff with Vanilla Custard Filling. I remember trying this when employees from Maui used to fly to Oahu and bring it for our department...didn't know they bought it from here. It's soooo good...wish I could've brought some home but this place closes at 1pm and I fly out at 9:30 pm tonight...I'm so sad. Well, I bought one each for the 3 of us so we're satisfied but still sad. We brought the Stick Donut home and gave to a few people. Everyone liked it but to my husband and I, we thought it tasted like donut holes...nothing special. Not sure what we're missing here...lol! FYI: - This place is located on a busy road and hard to find street parking...we had to get dropped off so good to have a designated driver to look for parking. - They run out of donuts so the worker said it's good to call in your order.

A delicious stop for the famous malasadas on a stick as well as the more traditional malasadas - both custard filled and regular. The grocery offered lots of other bread options as well but we had our eyes on malasadas! Easy ordering and takeaway, friendly and fast service.

coconut donuts on a stick and other amazing treats. Partially eaten by my kids.

stopped here with Maui MountainRiders after biking down the crater. We needed nutrition and coffee. did not get either here but the donuts were absolutely amazing. This photo is not that appetizing because my kids had devoured part of the donuts on a stick and the pastry before I could even take a photo. Wish we would have bought more. Freaking yumminess if that is even enough of a description?

Ask the Community - T Komoda Store & Bakery

    Do they accept phone orders?

YES! I just called in my order for pick up tomorrow.

Do they have online orders? I had to move to the states for work and would love to order butter rolls and stick donuts!🤙🏼

It's a mom and pop shop, so my guess would be that they don't have that available. I do know for sure that you are able to call in pre-orders in advance (highly recommended for large orders). You could always try to call them and ask.

What days and hours are they open?

I think their hours listed is 7:30am to 4:00pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Closed on Sunday and Wednesday.…

Are they open on Christmas Day?

    No they're not.

    Do they open on Thanksgiving?

They don't open on thanksgiving day, but usually the day before they do. They sell out of press fast and its usually pre-order

    Does Komodo make sandwiches?

Not that i remember but they do make awesome lumpias

Local products including meat, eggs, fruit & veg are available, and rather reasonably priced. If you're not a Costco addict, you'll find the prices are equivalent to local grocery stores. We got farm eggs and local steak for less than what would be paid at Safeway or Foodland. Like many local stores, Rodeo offers warm ready to eat foods like spam musubi, breakfast wraps, and plate-lunch style meals at the deli counter. They also offer local and imported ingredients, including for some reason many products from Mexico. I picked up a dark Oaxaca mole here that was incredible. They have bottled Coke from Mexico as well. There's also a large selection of cold drinks, inexpensive and otherwise. A can of flavoured water costs $1, good deal and refreshing. Kombucha is available in bottles and on tap. Add to that a huge alcohol and tobacco selection, and an impressive cigar humidor! There's something for everyone here, and you gotta love the local general store ambiance. It's deceptive from the exterior how large the store is, and one would never expect the variety of products inside. Don't forget to ask the cashier for the answer to the sandwich-board joke of the day, or say hello to the shop kitty!

I had heard about the Maui Cookie Lady cookies in early 2016 and knew that I had to get one the next time we visited. At that time, the cookies were only available at various local markets that would get a delivery once or twice a week. There was no dedicated retail store then. In November 2016, it finally happened! I was able to find a small supply of Mitzi's, the Maui Cookie Lady's, cookies at the Market Maui (since closed). My first cookie was Da Half Baked - a chocolate chip cookie stuffed with Reese's, Snickers, AND Oreo! OMG...only a super creative cookie chef extraordinaire could have imagined such a delight! I knew that I would be a fan forever!! On every subsequent trip, I sought out the amazing cookies. It wasnʻt always easy to find them, as the batches were small and offered in very limited locations. I would be on a mission and never gave up until I found them. My friends and co-workers were always so excited when I brought them back a "world-famous Maui Cookie Lady" cookie when I returned from Maui. In late 2020, the year after my last trip to Maui, the Maui Cookie Lady opened up a retail shop in Makawao. I haven't been able to stop by in person yet, but I will be going the next time I visit. I tell all my friends about the cookies, and several have been able to stop by the cute shop. When I am lucky, a friend will bring back some ono cookies for me. The Maui Cookie Lady cookies are not like most of the cookies you are used to eating. The first thing that you will notice is that they are really big!! I like to say that they are "gargantuan"! The second thing is that they are made with creative ingredients that may be familiar to you, or they may be new. Many of the varieties incorporate local ingredients lilikoi, Kona coffee, and macadamia nuts. The combination of flavors will excite any cookie loverʻs taste buds. Donʻt worry if you are not local to stop by the shop in person. You can order cookies online, individually or via the monthly subscription box. If you are visiting and want to take a few home with you, know that they can be frozen and stay great when you want to enjoy them. They do not contain preservatives, which I think is a big plus. In addition to creating great cookies, Mitzi is a big supporter of the community. She helps with various fundraising efforts to help those in Maui. As a former teacher, she is connected to educators in Hawaiʻi and their special needs. Once I get back to Maui, I will visit the store and update this review. I can't wait!

We were heading back from a sunrise at Haleakalā when I decided to check Yelp for good nearby coffee places and this popped up, so we headed on over. This coffee shop is on Baldwin Ave in Makawao and the inside is pretty large with lots of seating. They also have a display case with baked goods over by where you order. After looking over the menu I ultimately decided on one of their specials, a cherry vanilla latte, which I don't think I have seen before in a coffee. After only a couple of minute wait, I had my latte and was out the door. My coffee here ended up tasting really good, almost like a cherry vanilla ice cream. The cherry flavor came first and that was followed by the sweet vanilla. While I know the coffee was there, it got lost a bit with the cherry vanilla flavoring. Still, I enjoyed it. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. A cherry vanilla latte is a new combo for me, but I enjoyed it and only wish the espresso was a bit more pronounced.
