    The goods - VN

I'm not a huge dessert fan, but sometimes my sweet tooth craves other decadences besides ice cream. Napoleon's is the in-house bakery arm of the Zippy's restaurant chain. Some are run 24/7, but this location isn't. The menu is very extensive - cakes, pies, donuts, danishes, malasadas, andagi... DESSERTS: Napples - This is their most popular selection. Its a light and super flaky turnover with a sweet filling. My favorite is the apple Napple. The filling tastes similar to what you'd find in McD's apple pies, but on a more homemade scale. They also make other flavors like blueberry, cherry, coconut, and chocolate. Andagi - The popular Okinawan-style donut is about the size of a tennis ball. Homemade versions are usually smaller. The batter is slightly sweet and creamy tasting, and isn't topped with anything. It's supposed to come out with a slightly crisp crust and moist cake-like texture inside. Eat them hot if you can. Malasadas - Their version is actually pretty damn tasty! The Portuguese donut is shaped like an oval ball, dusted with white sugar, and has a chewy texture. Get it plain (my fave,) or filled with vanilla or chocolate pudding. Chantilly Cake - This is a Hawaii specialty. It's a chocolate cake with a unique beige-colored frosting that's not overly sweet and has a hint of saltiness. Reeeeally good! Haupia Chocolate Cake - My dad loved this to the end. Chocolate and coconut combined to make a little Hawaiian baby. Strawberry Gelatin Cream Cheese Square - Its a graham cracker crust with a slightly heavy cream cheese middle topped with a thin layer of strawberry Jello. It looks pretty and tastes even prettier. TIP: If you're eating in Zippy's, order the bakery items directly from the bakery counter which is slightly cheaper than the restaurant menu. OVERALL: Great selection, fresh, good pricing.

Napoleon's Bakery is located inside Zippy's restaurant. They sell ensaymadas (sweet buttery bread), turnovers (apple, blueberry, etc.) and malasadas (fried Portuguese donuts). Their malasadas are cooked fresh to order. After 10 minutes of waiting, our small box of malasadas are ready to take with us to the Kahului airport (OGG). This is the perfect snack after eating a meal at Zippy's. These pockets of yumminess can either be filled or unfilled. We chose cinnamon sugar, custard, and haupia (coconut pudding). Mmmm...messy but delicious!

We came here for the malasadas. The coconut filling is good. The chocolate filling is just putting, not so good.

For all the years I've been lucky enough to make visits, I have always made a visit to this magical cart of homemade goods, with HANDS DOWN THE BEST BANANA BREAD on any of the islands!!! Anyone try to tell me otherwise I will argue with you (lovingly with aloha of course). Each piece is just so moist and delicious, not overly sweet. And I love the Mac nut one. Adds some great texture. The kindness of the team is just the epitome of aloha... it's wonderful to see the community keep what makes Hawaii so special, and also preserve what has made 20 years of visits feel like the very first time... Aunty Lia always tells me to call ahead to pre-order, and they'll be ready and waiting for me! I need to do this!!! However, I can always find something scrumptious to buy here. The large breads are $8, and the small loaves are $5. This visit, I tried the small lilikoi loaf, and it was divine, subtly sweet and moist. On the next Saturday, I bought the mango loaf, which I promptly froze to bring back home to the mainland. Yes, I want to continue my Maui vacation when I get home! Mahalo, Aunty Lia!

The sponge cake is so light, and the cream fillings are just as light, paired with fresh fruit. Nothing about it weighs you down. The strawberry and cream is my favorite, with the matcha strawberry coming in at a close second. Just make sure to go early, because they sell out fast. Aside from the roll cakes, they also have bentos, musubi, and sandwiches, so there's plenty to love here. The parking lot is a bit tight upon arrival, but you can definitely drive around the back and check for availability there. I was pleased to find the line wasn't outside the door. It was pretty busy inside, for good reason. Their pastries and food options looked spectacular. As I observed seated customers, everyone appeared to be enjoying themselves and their treats. I was a little disappointed to see the pump bottles of syrup by the bar, as I would've loved to try a house made syrup. But nonetheless, I ordered a cortado with coconut milk and Mac nut flavoring. It was much smaller than I was used to from ordering cortados at other shops, but it was perfect. I wish I took a photo. Since I stopped by before returning my rental car in the afternoon, there wasn't that much of a wide variety of pastries left. However I was able to snag an Ube croissant. I saved it on my flight and ate it at home the following day. It remained super soft and fresh. The ube filling was light yet flavorful without being too sweet. The color was gorgeous. I'm not sure if you'll understand, but the croissant was flakey but not dry. It was airy, but still bready and full. It was hugeeee!! I'd compare it to half the size of my forearm lol. I only waited about 10 mins from entry to exit. After trying this shop, I would gladly wait outside on the steps if I had to. Can't wait to return and try some new items!!

We made sure to pay a visit on our first free lunch day! Of course, coming during the lunch rush we had to wait for maybe 20 minutes outside before getting a table for 4. Longest 20 minutes of my life LOL! Paid off though when we finally got seated! Ordered the usual suspects: -Dry Noodles (Dry Mein) ($18.95) - DOUBLE sized for 2! Or one Hungry Hawaiian HA! -Cheeseburger Deluxe ($5.95) -French Fries with Mustard/Mayo ($5.95) -BBQ Stick (Beef and Chicken) ($3.75 each) -Manju ($1.25 each) -Turnovers ($1.85 each) I was so hungry I forgot pics of half my order! Shared the Dry Noodles with my Mom but honestly I ate 75% of that double order LOL! Just as awesome as I remember - just needed a dash of the soup, splash of shoyu, dab of Tabasco, and a lot of cracked black pepper! Ugh, so ONO! The Cheeseburger Deluxe and French Fries were honestly not gourmet, but the nostalgia factor brings it up a notch for me. Don't forget to dip into their Mustard/Mayo mix, it's a game changer! The BBQ Sticks were a little overdone this time but I'll let it slide because I do love that char on the edges. And you can't leave without having a manju and turnover (or 2....of each LOL) for dessert! Not much has changed at Sam Sato's over the decades (except maybe the prices, they went up!) and that's the way we like it! Old schoo for an old foo like ME!

Last, I wanted to do something nice for the kids.. to show a bit of positivity in light of darkness. I purchased 40 teddy bears and I placed an order w/ Heidi to surprise the same kids that are waiting for the stuffed animal surprise to arrive. Heidi reached out to me thanks to the FB group. Her bakery is also listed on the sheet where businesses have been impacted, so I knew I would help brighten the kids' day and support a local business. I ordered 4 dozens.
