What an experience! Found out when we walked in that it's carry out only. It's been years since we came in and sat down to eat. Covid changed a lot of things. On this visit, there was just one guy there. Pretty sure it was the owner, by the way he carried a conversation with my husband. Hubby wanted a brisket sandwich. You can't go wrong here. Plentiful portions, tasty sides, packed into a go box. I was all about the ribs. Never disappointed! Had plenty of bread, so hubby took some to make a sandwich with. We sat out in the car to get our grub on. What a feast! I had bones for the dogs, a few scraps for birds lurking in the lot and some to take home for a late night snack. Is there any good BBQ in this town. This is the 5th or 6th place ive tried and it all comes up short. Dont get me wrong, there are differences and Julius Rib Cag has some big ones. Like, no customers but me at lunch 12:30 pm on Wednesday. I knew this was a bad sign when I drove up. However, Im on a genuine open minded quest to find some good Q in Wichita. I ordered the brisket sandwich and it came not chopped and not sliced but somewhere inbetween. The brisket had the tell tale pink smoke ring and wasnt bad. Ususally the difference in a good and mediocer place is in the details. The bun was soft and white but cold. Can someone in this town toast a bun. It makes 100% difference in a sandwich with smoked meat on it. The potatoe salad was passable and the ice tea thirst quenching. They are having a hard time as indicated by no customers and no lights on in the place except for the kitchen. Thats right no lights. Either run a resturant or dont. Put your heart and soul into it and if it doesnt make it move on to something else. I got the idea that the people behind the counter are not the original owners and maybe JRC was sold to them and they are struggling to pull it out of a nose dive. Julius Rib Cage, formerly Julius Rib Cage II before JRC The First decided it couldn't hack it up on 13th and Oliver in what I presume is the space now occupied by Froggar's, shares a similarly nice flavor but dry pork. I tried it, along with the sausage and turkey. Sausages are never the problem, and this was on par with the others I've had in Wichita. The turkey had a nice smoky flavor, but it had the same kind of processed, suspiciously smooth texture that you find in lunch meat. Admittedly, I don't go for the smoked turkey very often, but I'm pretty sure that is not what results from taking a fresh turkey and throwing it in the smoker. If you've had the turkey at Two Brothers, it's similar. The entirety of my order received a liberal dusting of their rub. It's not something I've seen anywhere else in Wichita, but I did recently come across it at Johnny's BBQ in Kansas City. At the time, I liked the idea from a presentation standpoint, but I was unsure with regards to taste. Now, I can say with certainty that I don't like it, and the taste of the raw spices doesn't add anything to the flavor of the meat. I was disappointed that my three meat meal only came with one side, but the beans had big bits of pork in it that should be the standard for baked beans at barbecue restaurants. Julius Rib Cage reminded me of several other barbecue restaurants at which I've eaten in the past few months, but unfortunately none of those memories were very fond. Today was my first time here and hands down well worth every penny!!! I got the rib dinner with beans n slaw. Everything was AMAZING! I also got the hot BBQ sauce .... I just couldnt stop lathering each bite in it. Yes it is hot but not so hot u can taste the sweat n sour notes that compliment the BBQ flavors. I think I will be going back for the sauce alone it was so good! As far as the "in house" dining, well it could use a make over but if the food is what matters to u the decore wont matter after ur first bite. read more

I have been on a BBQ kick for most of my life. The neverending hankering for ribs, brisket and hot links has led me on a seriously tasty journey, and the most recent stop at Julius Rib Cage did not disappoint. Let me just put it this way, since sharing the ENORMOUS jumbo sampler with my (thankfully) BBQ-lovin' man last Friday, my tummy has already been planning a return trip to this amazing rib joint. The sampler offered up healthy portions of brisket, smoked turkey, smoked ham, one hot link (halved), four ribs and two generous helpings of sides--we did potato salad and beans--so good! The Rib Cage abides by one of the most important tenets of excellent BBQ: BBQ is excellent if it doesn't heavily rely on sauces to add flavor. Don't get me wrong, the sauce (available at each table) was delicious, but the meats were great with or, most importantly, without it! Counter service was friendly, and we were asked two times how everything was and if we could get any refills. Of course, I almost didn't even have to try Julius' 'cue to be hooked. Why? The owner was very nice and accommodating. He recommended that we get the variety platter for $15.99 since it was our first time visiting. Very glad we followed his advise!! The food as a whole was amazing. I am very used to BBQ from Kansas City so I am very picky!! The Ribs in my opinion were the best. Everything was slow smoked and had a very rich flavor to it. The only two complaints I do have are that the food does not come with wet naps...not a huge deal but it is BBQ. the second being the turkey. That was the one meat I was not a fan of due to its almost gelatin like texture. So far this is my favorite BBQ place in Wichita and we will definitely be returning! I was taken out for bbq by a Wichita resident that bragged about the flavors all the way to the restuarant. I ordered a brisket sandwich a hot link with fries and hot sauce. The brisket was so tender and smoky the hot links were spicy and flavorful. His hot sauce made my tongue tingle but not ruin the flavors. The owner was quite pleasant. It was a great experience and will be back to try more off the large menu which something for everyone. read more

Super tender meat. The ribs are packed with meat and anywhere else they are usually so thin. The barbecue sauce is on point! Perfect taste. Watch out for that spicy! Tonight I needed some quick BBQ to take home for the wife and kid. I pulled in with the intention of just grabbing some smoked chicken, but after chatting with the cook I decided to give the jumbo sampler a shot. The guy was friendly, courteous, and offered a sample of the smoked turkey, which did seem to have a slightly processed texture as a previous reviewer mentioned, but I found it also to be perfectly moist and well smoked. The ribs were a several notches above the bigger chains in Wichita, smoky, tender, and juicy with a rub that wasn't too overwhelming and complimented the meat well. The beef was thick slices of super tender brisket that tasted half-perfect smoked BBQ and half-country style roast beef. But the highlight was the chicken leg quarter the cook threw in as an extra when I mentioned I'd like to try it. He made me a loyal customer with that chicken, and secured this place as my favorite BBQ joint in town. read more

Had the beef brisket sandwich, a side of potato salad and a drink for under $9. The older foreign gentlemen who runs the place is very friendly and he's also the cook. He'll take his time preparing your meal but it's so worth the wait. He brought out a sandwich piled high with some very moist smoky and delicious brisket. Easily enough meat for two people so plenty of food. He does give you sauce on the side but I barely needed it, the flavor of the meat stands on its own. read more

Beans tasted okay but were mushy. Asked for white bread...got wheat instead. And the bread could've been toasted. Only one side comes with the three-meat dinner. And one of the options isn't macaroni and cheese. Another customer asked for double ribs with her three-meat platter. She was told that their portions were so big and that she wouldn't need it. I think their fountain machine was broken because the Diet Dr. Pepper tasted really bitter. Ribs were good without the sauce. And the portion was okay. But the two bones seemed kinda big for being pork ribs. The links were okay. They tasted pretty basic. They were basically one long link cut in half length-wise. I do have say that the sauce was incredible. The hot was hot like it should be. The sauce had that thicker tomato-saucy taste and consistency that I prefer. Love it! The meat is smoked on site, and the smell just adds to the meal. The flavorful and tender meat doesn't need the sauce, hot or mild, that is served on the side. Baked beans are wonderful with junks of beef added. We've tried ribs, brisket, sandwiches (and if you want the bun toasted - just ask!) and fish and it's all wonderful. We brought a turkey in for smoking and a wonderful job was done. We stop every chance we get. There may not be a lot of dine-in sometimes, but it's amazing how much 'to go' business went on.
