Took my son here for his first dentist appointment and we had a good experience! Kind of surprised to see some bad reviews. Setting up the appointment was easy and received plenty of reminders leading up to it. Checking in was easy as well, bit of paperwork, but that's normal. The waiting lobby itself is nice, with a few toys and books for the kids and a movie set up as well. Love the theme here - definitely giving nature and PNW vibes! The assistant that helped with my son's teeth cleaning was great with him and really nice. The dentist himself was a little more reserved but still provided good care and advice. Of course my son loved the final touch of being able to pick out a toy at the end for doing a good job. I'm coming back in a couple of weeks with my older kids for their first appointments here and I'm sure it'll go just as well! read more

I have been bringing my children to this dental office for around 10 years but today will be my last visit. The woman who does check out, Maria, is consistently rude and unprofessional. The woman has the personality of a potato. It is exhausting to deal with at every check out. My son had a small dental procedure. After they took him back I looked for the receptionist (who is wonderful) to let her know I was going to the car to leave my stuff. She unfortunately wasn't there and the lady at checkout happened to see me and aggressively tell me "you have to stay here".. my son is in the back why would I leave the premises? I still walked out and took my stuff to the car, came back and sat in the chair outside the office (the waiting room is small). This lady and her attitude came out of the office and went down the stairs to, I assume, search the parking lot for me. Just a really weird and unprofessional situation. The receptionist, dental assistants and dentists are great. The negative interaction at every visit just isn't worth it to keep coming here. read more

I took my 2 year old here for her first real dental appt and cleaning, the front desk could not have been nicer. But the hygienist I got seemed completely inexperienced to deal with a toddler and none of the other staff stepped in to offer any help or encouragement as I was trying to calm down and wrangle my daughter who was screaming with fear for 20 mins while attempting to clean her teeth. Eventually we decided a cleaning was not in the cards for today and the Dr stepped in and did a very quick exam which I appreciated, noting that she does have some plaque that needs cleaning. If you have children with special needs DO NOT take them here. My family has been going here for 12 year, my oldest started going here when she was just 1 year old, and we've never had an issue. Until today. I have 2 children with special needs, autism and ADHD. Today my son (six) had an appointment to get a filling. It was supposed to be a light sedation appointment which we were told no food or drink 8 hours prior to his appointment which we abided by. When we got into his appointment he was supposed to drink the medication that would make him sleepy (it's liquid and doesn't taste very good) as some may know, but some may not, texture- taste- the look of something- not understanding why- and many other things can be hard for children with autism and ADHD my son tasted the drink and almost immediately vomited. And at that moment there was no way he was going to decide to drink the medication. They gave him a little water to wash it down with but he still didn't want to take it. I asked if I could put some water flavor in it (like mio) and was told no but understood because maybe that would affect the medicine. I then asked if he could have a mint after he took it and he as also told no, then for one last stitch effort I asked if I could just rub the mint on his tongue so that yucky flavor wouldn't be there anymore. I was also told no. At no point in time did the doctor or the nurse attempt to help me explain to my son why he needed to take it, why it would help, or anything. At this point I asked if instead of doing the sedation medication if we could pivot into doing just the laughing gas because maybe it would be easier to explain to him and he wouldn't have to drink the medication. At that point in time the doctor said to me that my son was "too wiggly and too bad" and needed to be put to sleep for his procedure all while my son is hiding in the corner because at this point we're at an hour of sitting while I try to talk him into taking the medicine. When I asked the doctor what he expected from my son who has autism and severe ADHD and didn't take his ADHD medicine I was then told I could have given him his ADHD medicine before his appointment but I never was. Not at the phone call prior to his appointment, not before we checked in nothing. No I was told nothing to eat or drink 9 hours before his appointment and to not even brush his teeth. To which the doctor again told me my son was too bad, didn't know how to listen and moved around too much to be able to do the appointment without him taking the medicine. I'm not really sure how a medical professional can have such an obvious bias against children with special needs or to automatically label him as having behavioral issues but it was absolutely disgusting. So if your children are "normal" and "easy" by all means take them here. But if you don't want to leave the office in tears wondering why people insist on telling you you're children are not allowed to exist in a world they're a little different then anyone else in I wouldn't suggest it. We will never be back. I canceled every upcoming appointment before we left and we'll be finding a new dentist. Do better. read more

This place should be inspected by the department of health for their practices because it's insane what is going on here. Attached is the information packet I was given yesterday for my daughter for what to expect when my daughter gets a cavity filled. 1.) they are giving versed to children - which helps children not remember an experience afterward or numb a negative emotion to it - and then taking that child away from the parent, putting them in a room with the male dentist and 2 other assistants under the claim of "needing to focus on giving proper care to the child and to monitor them." And that's what they will repeatedly say. Which sounds good to parents who know nothing of versed. Like that no monitoring needs to be done where a parent cannot be there. There is no need for vitals outside of before and after. There is zero reason that it's fine for a parent to go back for nitrous BUT NOT OK WITH VERSED OUTSIDE OF VERSED HELPS WIPE A CHILDS MEMORY. So what is happening back there??? Hmmm??? Oh they get restrained to a board - why?? Because your child might grab things so they say but with versed AND Benadryl they are not grabbing anything. But how many parents would not be ok with what is happening back there?? Probably most. 2.) it was never said VERSED AND BENADRYL where given. This is an insane amount of medication and again, we talked about the versed, Benadryl was NEVER mentioned so at what point was that going to be given? After you give them the versed in the lobby and take them back and make them take it?? 3.) THEY RESTRAIN THEM TO A BOARD AND DO NOT TELL THE PARENT AND ITS MIXED IN WITH THE ENTIRE TREATMENT POLICY SO VERY EASY TO MISS! So now your child is restrained, in a room with only one Dr and 2 way lesser people (so how likely are they to speak up if something inappropriate or not ethical is happening), they are given an insane amount of drugs where they can't escape and if they try they are strapped down!! And NO PARENTS ALLOWED - but again when a child is not drugged and not trapped to a board a parent can be there. WHAT?? 4.) It is then added "it is actually a great safety indicator that they are doing just fine" by crying!! Let me tell you something, if my child is crying with VERSED AND BENADRYL in her system AND YOU CONTINUE AND SAY ITS ACTUALLY A GOOD INDICATOR THEY ARE FINE YOU SHOULD BE IN JAIL FOR ABUSE. 5.) I won't mention the $200 fine if you cancel within 2 wks claiming medication cost. This is utterly shocking that is happening to children. read more

I would not recommend this dentist. My kids went in and I was informed that they would need a cap and a cavities taken care of. Ok, no problem. Then I get a letter in the mail regarding them not longer assisting my children because I had a dispute with the way things were being handled with my children. So instead of the Doctor himself calling me to discuss the situation I was sent a letter 21 days after he had seen my children and taken payment for the anesthesia. I'm surprised I have not written a review for this dental office over the years. My son has been a patient for 7 years and every visit is an A+. Everyone to the front desk, billing, assistants and the dentist we are all treated with professionalism and a friendly smile. My son compliments the decor and he says it brings him good memories. I truly trust the work and information provided to me about my sons dental needs and that's really important for us. We were referred here for my 7 year old by our non pediatric dentist when he needed more work on his teeth than our dentist wanted a non pediatric dentist to do. Everyone in the office was wonderful Abe completely focused on my Child and his comfort level. The dentist was joking around with my son making him comfortable, but also efficient. This is an amazing pediatric dentist!! The staff are all kid friendly with positive energy! The office is so clean and has such fun decor, which my boys seemed to love! Dr. Sakai is a great dentist and was very informative in regards to any issues/concerns. Aside from the awesome attitudes from staff and the great work they perform, there are many entertaining things so kids won't get bored easily. Please do not bring your child here if they are new to dentistry or have any fear! It is NOT normal to hold your child down screaming as they attempt to clean their teeth as a young child. This is traumatizing and not normal after talking to several dentists. I am now at a new dentist that is kind, patient, talks through what she is doing and the tools and allows my child to get comfortable and choose what he will and will not allow. If there is ever complaints they stop! He is finally starting to get over this anxiety. Secondly, Dr.Sakai did not even acknowledge my child. He came over, gave me a lecture about thumb sucking and asked me to hold him down. Not even a "hello, what's your name". How is this a pediatric dentistry??! We came here for a second opinion. We LOVED all the staff. The dentist was kind and patient. So were all the other staff. I've read some comments where parents were asked to hold their children down... or not get their teeth cleaned. I understand that can be emotional... but how is a dentist supposed to do work or clean someone's teeth, that hasn't been prepared for a dental visit BY THE CHILDS OWN PARENT?!? It's a pediatric dentists job to do their best at making a child comfortable. But from some of these reviews I can most likely see the child's anxiety level was risen by their own parents. Which is sad... that blame can't be put on a dental office. They can only try their best, they aren't miracle workers. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. Kevin Sakai and his staff are unprofessional, rude and discriminatory. I received a letter today from Kevin Sakai, terminating my child's doctor/patient relationship "due to inappropriate behavior to our staff member". They messed up and did not take care of my three-year-old, who was heavily sedated by staff after a filling. I was informed that it is protocol in this office that staff should be bringing a sedated child out to a parent's vehicle after a sedation appointment, but their assistant did not do that. My poor daughter could not walk and had to go to the bathroom. The assistant watched me struggle to carry her, my phone and my coffee cup out of the office in order to get her to the bathroom, which is on the other side of the building. Oh, and the door has a code. I struggled for about 15 minutes to get my screaming, crying child out of the building. They watched from the windows of the office and did nothing. Their lack of care and empathy was upsetting and appalling. When I expressed my concerns to them before her second appointment, the receptionist I spoke with was rude, unprofessional, unapologetic and never reassured me that it would not happen again. She put me on hold for five minutes and simply came back on the line with a date to reschedule, mentioning nothing about the concerns I just expressed. I rescheduled the appointment and informed her my partner, who is considered her father, would be bringing her in. I asked if there was any paperwork I needed to update in order for him to do so. She told me "no" and said that unless we were married, I needed to be there. All I said to her was "Well, I will still keep the appointment, but thank you for nothing" and hung up the phone. Not once did I curse at or raise my voice at the receptionist. Their lack of empathy, patient care and ethics is revolting. Do yourself and your child a favor by finding another dentist. read more

I brought my daughter here for her first and second check-ups after reading the stellar reviews on here. I haven't been back, and have no plans of sending any patient referrals their way. The office is nice and clean, but the hygienists and Dr. Sakai have no business working with children. My daughter was afraid and their solution, rather than talk to her and describe what each instrument was and how it worked, was for me to hold her tightly in my lap so they could work while she cried. She was completely traumatized. There was zero compassion or empathy, and it felt like my then three year old was nothing but a nuisance. Any Dentist office that claims children are their primary focus should have their entire dental experience designed around fostering a positive relationship between children and teeth cleaning, not traumatizing them by forcing the action. I can't say for certain that this forceful cleaning hurt my daughter, but I don't feel the situation was handled with care, compassion, or understanding and I know she will have issues seeing Dentists in the future. The unprofessional way Dr. Sakai spoke to me only worked to add insult to injury and as a result, I will neither bring my daughter here again, nor will I recommend this place to anyone. After reading reviews for Dentists on Google, I selected Dr. Kevin H. Sakai. I told the assistant who scheduled our appointment that my daughter had an aversion to her teeth being brushed. She had fallen a few months prior, hitting above her tooth on the corner of a chair and it healed within a week. More recently, a week prior, she bit down on a lollipop and a small piece of her tooth had chipped off. I was concerned as more of the tooth seemed to be slowly chipping away when we brushed. The assistant assured me their dental team was highly trained and would comfort my daughter by using distraction techniques. Her confidence in their abilities helped solidify my choice to try this place. On appointment day, we arrived 10 minutes early and were called back 5 minutes after our scheduled time. I gave our dental assistant the rundown on my daughter's tooth trauma, just as I had over the phone. She gave me an overview of their process, including fluoride treatment. I asked about fluoride ingestion and her response was that it's always recommended. The assistant asked me to sit in the patient chair laying my daughter across the two of us with her body in my lap and her head resting in her own lap. The assistant seemed confused and irritated when my daughter cried, offering no help. I sat my daughter up, talking sweetly to her and turned her around to watch another little boy getting his teeth cleaned. The assistant gave me a forced smile and asked if we were "ready to try again?" The frantic cries started but this time the assistant asked me to just "hold her still for a few minutes" so she could finish. I immediately sat her back up afterwards, tears still streaming down her face and sobbing on the verge of hyperventilating. I quickly asked about breastfeeding. The assistant gave me the okay and I comforted my daughter in the only way that worked. Five minutes later the Dentist walked our way and I cut off my breastfeeding session. Dr. Sakai introduced himself and explained that both of us could lay back in the chair under the light while he looked at my daughter's teeth (I wondered why this wasn't offered during teeth cleaning as well but didn't ask). I could tell my daughter was still feeling anxious because the moment Dr. Sakai tried to look at her teeth she started resisting, crying again. Upon sitting us back up, Dr. Sakai announced that although my daughter didn't have any cavities she did have some buildup along her gum line. Apparently, he deduced that it was from breastfeeding because he followed with the statement: "breastfeeding causes cavities." He further elaborated that his recommendation was that I "get my daughter on a feeding routine as soon as possible." I felt so disrespected by his words that I wanted to get up and walk out. The act of breastfeeding does not cause cavities; leaving sugary substances in a baby's mouth while they are falling asleep and/or throughout the day without brushing their teeth can cause cavities. As for my breastfeeding schedule, that really is none of Dr. Sakai's business. Being on a feeding schedule doesn't minimize the risk of cavities. An appropriate suggestion would have been to get my daughter on a brushing routine with a new baby soft toothbrush, start incorporating a pea-sized bit of fluoride toothpaste daily, and wiping her teeth after every feeding. read more

I recently switched my kids dentistry, upon arrival, I noticed the cute northwest and black bear theme they have going on. They have a small room for the kids to play in with video games, and toys. They also have a big cube toy in the waiting area for babies or toddlers, along with a tv for entertainment. When we got there we didn't have to wait long, and the nurse who helped us really did a great job distracting and engaging in conversation with my kiddos. In the back room they have a giant black stuffed animal bear, and some more tv's. They took Xrays and provided me with several options for treatment. read more

I really wanted to like this place because the office is so cute, it was nearby, and it takes my insurance. However, I felt like the waiting area was way too small for the amount of people who were in there during our first visit. (Some people were having to stand or go out and wonder for a bit). The front desk lady was very kind and checking in was easy as well. However, I felt like the actual check-up was rushed and impersonal. I get it, they were swamped. The first girl who I guess is a technician or assistant did most of the actual work which went well enough. She was nice and got the job done. However, it kind of bothered me that the main guy only comes in at the very end to check her work and throws scare tactics at you with this book of kids with awful teeth if you mention you don't floss. My daughter was 2 at the time and still drinking toddler formula which had been approved by her primarily doctor, but I was still shown the Book of Teeth Horror just in case I couldn't comprehend the idea that brushing is important. I would just go back to their previous dentist who was amazing, but it's located in California so I'm out of luck. They actually have a first-time dentist appointment at Little Sprouts in University Place (who also accepts state insurance) today and I'm hoping it goes a lot better and feels less like a business and more like a family. My 4 year old son goes here, and they are great with him. Despite constant brushing, flossing, and fluoride use, he still managed to get cavities between some teeth. So not only has he had a cleaning here, but also dental work done. All visits went well. The wait time is short, and their office is really fun. Dr. Sakai and the team are great and very nice and professional. My daughter has a lot of anxiety with medical procedures and they were very helpful with that. I was assured by both the Dr. and the dental assistant that I would be allowed to be with my daughter while she was being put under general anesthesia until she fell asleep. HOWEVER... the anesthesiologist, Dr. K, was very rude and unprofessional to me and my daughter. He WOULD NOT allow me to be with my daughter while she was being put under and tried to tell me that I was never told that. He was short and threatening and made my daughter cry. In the end, we ended up leaving without having the procedure done because my daughter was originally told that I could be with her until she fell asleep and was very anxious and upset when that was changed at the last minute. She told me that the anesthesiologist was talking rudely to her and gave off very bad vibes. I would NOT recommend this facility if you have to deal with this guy and I strongly suggest that they find a new anesthesiologist that knows how to deal with parents and children in a professional manner and puts their comfort first. read more

When I noticed that my 3 year old daughter had visible cavities in her teeth (YIKES!!) I was embarrassed, sad and mortified. I looked up Just For Kids and the reviews as well as a couple of other dentists and decided this would be the first place I took her to. When we got there, she was a completely different kid. She loved the office and and even better, she loved the team that works there. We had to come in for 4 separate visits and each time she took the hand of Sarah, and went back without me. When she came out each time, she was smiling and happy as if nothing had happened. They are very quick, you know the pricing up front for each visit and my daughter looks forward to going and has never been upset. My two year old son needed one cavity filled, but he is too little to be able to control his behavior in an environment like this, so they did have to give him some medicine to help him relax, but it was all completely alright and he was fine going back without me and came out a happy camper. I was extremely disappointed with my first time experience. I felt like I was getting jipped from the second the "Doctor" came up and started looking at my sons teeth. I explained he has decay and cavities that need to be addressed and I specified he has never had any type of work done on his teeth. The dentist then proceeded to argue with me and tell me that he has previously had "medicine" put on his cavities similar to fillings to "stop" the decay and I told him. No he has not had any work done. Again and again he argued with me he has had work done. Then I explained to him his sensitivity and he proceeded to tell me he needed crowns. But not the basic white ones he needed the silver ones. The more expensive ones of course. Then when I called to voice my opinions because I was so unhappy with how he argued with me, I was laughed at by the woman named Carissa who answered the phone, I then asked for a refund and got it. But wow. What kind of school did your doctor go to. What kind of diagnosis process do you have?! Beyond frustrated. Just wanted my boys teeth fixed so he can be comfortable. Wow, these guys are so great! My four year old is very shy and the dental hygienist was so good with her that she was able to get x-rays and examine her teeth. The dentist was great too, very kind and gentle. We were so surprised and impressed with the whole experience. My two year old also had a visit and she did great too! My two younger boys see Dr. Sakai. We came here after a bad experience with another dentist. The office staff is always friendly. The assistants in the back are awesome with children. My boys are completely comfortable there. On our first visit last year, it was brought to my attention that my 9 year old son had jaw alignment problems. This not only affected his teeth and gums now, but would be damaging later in life. This was not something our previous dentist caught. I can say I am truly very happy with Dr. Sakai and his staff. My daughter was referred here by her dentist who is not a pediatric dentist and didn't feel comfortable removing the teeth her orthodontist wanted removed. Our first visit was in an open bay type room with no dividers and with many other chairs and patients just sitting there listening and watching everything the dentist says and does to the patient. Where's the level of privacy and patient confidentiality? The dentist was kind and talkative on this visit and he agreed with the orthodontist and would remove the 2 teeth on top and the 2 teeth on bottom as was requested. We scheduled 2 more appointments to have the 2 top teeth removed on one day and the 2 bottom teeth removed on a day 1 week later. We were then told we would have to pay in full everything up front that our insurance would not cover. So they went on to some website and pulled up numbers from this website stating we would have to pay $174.90 up front because our insurance would not cover certain parts of the teeth removal. When we arrived for the 1st appointment for the removal of the top 2 teeth I was told that they needed to take my 7 year old girl into a private room with a closed door all by herself in order to make her more independent and not relying on mom. I said uh NO I don't think so. In this day and age you can't be too careful about where you let your daughters go all by themselves. They were going to take her into one of the only 2 rooms that actually had doors to close and do whatever they needed or wanted to without my knowledge all by herself to make her independent of me. I did not allow such a thing to happen so I went back with her! The doctor on this visit did not look at me, talk to me or even acknowledge that I was in the room!! Apparently he was angry that I came back to this private room with my daughter and he couldn't do whatever he wanted with her, without my knowledge or consent. So the teeth were pulled. We paid our $174.90 up front without them filing to our insurance first and left. We came back a week later for the 2 bottom teeth to be pulled. Again I would not let her go back by herself. The doctor didn't say hi or even acknowledge I was even in the room or anything! It was cold!! The teeth were pulled. I left and again paid the $174.90 for the teeth removal upfront before they filed with my insurance and left and vowed NEVER TO RETURN!! But they did file with my insurance company and my insurance company sends me and EOB(Explanation of Benefits). Come to find out they OVERCHARGED me by $104 because they made me pay up front before filing with my insurance and sending me a bill later for what my insurance did not cover. They even filed with the insurance that they did procedures that they did not do!!! Needless to say we went right back in there and showed them our EOB. They did refund the overpayment because we had the proof from our insurance company. I would NEVER have gone to Just For Kids Dentistry if we had not been referred there in the first place. From experience I WILL NEVER RETURN to Just for Kids Dentistry for any reason at all not even a referral!! I would NEVER recommend anyone to have any type of services at all at this place!!! If you choose to do so I truly hope you have a better experience than I did!! I would recommend you follow up on everything ESPECIALLY taking your daughters into closed rooms by themselves to make them independent of you when they are only 7 years old and the Insurance and Finances and paying up front!!! read more
