Trying to find a quick, non-fast food options around KC's airport is difficult. I don't understand why there isn't just a strip center nearby of restaurants since choices are extremely limited inside the airport. It started raining last week as I was driving to the airport, and I just didn't feel like getting fast food. I resigned myself to getting something in the airport, as limited as the options may be. I saw a sign near the United check-in counter for this place, so I decided to give it a try. They don't serve root beer, so I just had water to drink. I ordered the chicken noodle soup and pepperoni and mushroom flatbread. I was pleasantly surprised at the chicken noodle soup, the soup of the day. Usually airport restaurants make this soup too salty, but the amount of sodium was just right. It wasn't too salty, and it wasn't too bland. In fact, it was actually delicious. The broth was the right consistency (not too gloopy and not too watery), and the noodles and chicken were pretty solid. I would've give this place four stars alone based on that soup. Unfortunately, the flatbread fell short. Frankly, I feel like restaurants call this "flatbread" just so they can charge more. This is really pizza. The dough was mediocre, the pepperoni was store-bought, and the mushrooms were okay. This pizza was a bit bland and fell into the category of your typical airport food. My soup was ready about 5 minutes after ordering, and the pizza was ready about 10 minutes after ordering (was still finishing the soup). These items cost $20.94, including tax, but pre-tip. I would probably eat here again just because of the convenience! read more

What I got for $14 was a cheap burger bun with a few sprigs of kale, one tomato slice and zero avocado. Maybe the sauce had some avo but not apparently. Some potato chips and a pickle slice. I only went there for breakfast but the simple fact is that I watched microwave my plate, which was two egg and sausage sliders and potatoes. It cost $10. Total rip off and it tasted so bad I barely ate any. I don't know how their lunch is, maybe it's decent. My girlfriend got the hummus and pita from the regular menu and that wasn't half bad but I'm pretty certain the hummus tasted like a store-bought brand that I ve gotten before so that was probably why tasted good. I'm giving this dumb place one star because the nasally little wiseass bartender kicked me out before I could even order because I made a lame joke. This was very humiliating and it happened in front of my boss. For a man who has the sole prerogative of selling alcohol to people of legal age in exchange for - you know, MONEY - he did an awful job of it. And I know he thought he had really stuck it to me too because he took a victory lap by recounting the story about how he kicked an out of towner out of his bar to everybody unlucky enough to be sitting at the bartop as a member of his captive audience. The interaction was as follows. I joined my coworker and boss who was enjoying a glass of wine and I took a seat. I asked if I could start with a glass of water before ordering. He said he needed my ID because I didn't look over 40, so as I was fishing my ID out to show him I passingly said "how do you know I'm not 40?" as a joke. Because I'm clearly not 40. I'm in my 20s. It wasn't a good joke or particularly funny I will admit, but still. Come on. So as I showed him my legal ID he got all smug and defensive and said "I know you're not 40 because I'm the bartender. And you can go sit over there now." I don't even know what that first part meant but I asked if he was seriously kicking me out of an airport bar because of a joke I made that really in no approximation was offensive. He stone faced and almost threateningly said "Yeah, I am. You can go over there." He scowled and followed me out with his eyes as I sheepishly walked over to the nearest bench. Then I proceeded to watch and hear him mock me to people who were minding their own business because of what a smartass and moron I supposedly was. This completely unnecessary power play, again, happened in front of my boss after a long weeklong business trip and was utterly humiliating and uncalled for. I am an adult. It is not right to treat me like some underage frat kid in front of my boss so he could get his off his little schadenfreude rocks or whatever he was trying for. I can understand if I had asked for it by becoming even slightly belligerent or if I had actually made some snide remark but what I said hardly qualifies as that. Nothing I said or did resembles a typical reason to kick a guy out of a bar. He was just trying to assert some kind of dominance in front of strangers to validate, what, his job as a morning shift airport bartender? Pitiful. This presented to me an absurd and unexpectedly rude goodbye from Kansas City and as I write this I am on my plane back to Chicago with still an exceedingly bad taste in my mouth from the interaction. Now this is part of how I'll remember this entire city. And yes. I was going to buy a drink. I just hadn't decided what yet and wanted a water in the meantime. He turned away a would-be paying customer in less than a minute flat for really no reason other than to try and be a badass. This guy has no place in the hospitality business. HOW TO WASTE TIME AND MONEY AT KCI AIRPORT. My wife and I got to the airport early as I needed to work from my laptop before my flight. None of the power outlets that we tried under the seats at the airport worked. We went to Just Off Vine and asked if they had outlets to plug into. The bartender, Linsey, said we could sit at the bar and plug in. We sat down and she plugged in my laptop. She then asked us to move down to the very end of the bar so as not to take up any extra seats. Mind you, there was never more than one other person at the bar the whole day besides us, and there were several bar stools. We felt obligated to order something so my wife ordered what was called "blue cheese fondue". It was actually potato chips, covered in blue cheese salad dressing and cheese wiz (terrible). While Linsey was working behind the bar, she was stacking glasses right on front of us, very loudly, which was annoying and possibly her intent. I later ordered a sandwich and wanted to order a beer. I asked her the prices for the beers on the menu but she was unable to give me exact prices. Instead she stated ranges of prices not seeming to know. I asked if there were set prices or whether she was coming up with them on the fly. She said she didn't know the prices because she worked at six other bars...but she could get the exact price by ringing it up. I said I'd like to know the prices BEFORE I ordered. I went ahead and ordered a draft beer not really knowing the price. While I was drinking the beer, she came and unplugged my computer and said she wasn't allowed to have anything plugged in?! Stopped in for a quick beer and some pizza before my flight. Beer was cold and pizza was good. Alan was attentive through the point my food was delivered. He ignored me after that. I flagged him down for my check which he did bring quickly but again disappeared while I waited for him to pickup my card and run it through. After 15 minutes I gave up and started walking to security. Who suddenly noticed? Alan. He then became belligerent and rude. I missed my boarding group and had to check my bag. All well-prepared and hot, and good enough to make me forget it was airport food. I got sliders to go, which were good also...a better choice than United Air's meager offerings once in-flight.
