Large Build Your Own
Katherine C.

I chose to get the "build your own poke bowl"with three proteins, half salad and half rice. Unfortunately, the seafood didn't seem very fresh, as the fish had a tough texture, and the sauces added to the proteins were mediocre and lacked flavor. On the positive side, they offered a nice variety of toppings, including edamame, ginger, and mango. The restaurant was clean. Overall, though, I felt the bowl was overpriced for the quality and portion I received.

Basically, the concept is that you build your own poke bowl, starting with the base, adding two proteins, then sauces, mix-ins, and toppings. I really like the option to build your poke bowl on a salad, instead of the bowl of rice that is the default at most places. (The 4 options for a base are white rice, brown rice, salad, or chips, and I didn't really ask what kind of chips they had.) It's nice that it is so customizable! For protein, I chose tofu and spicy tuna. This spicy tuna is more like a ground tuna or tuna salad, not big chunks. My husband got the ahi, which is cubes of tuna. I looked at his, looked at mine, and said "Where's my tuna?" then I figured out that the sauce-looking stuff was actually the spicy tuna. My advice is to shop the market, stop at Mix Poke Truck (which is at the "end" of the market near the new Silver Cloud Hotel), get your poke bowl, then take a nice walk along the waterfront and find the perfect bench with a view to enjoy it. Because the poke is light and fresh, it really hits the spot and won't weigh you down on your walk. Recipe for a perfect day!

Their spicy ahi was a mashed spicy tuna, which came pretty salty on its own, so if you add additional sauce it will be saltier which is what happened to me. However they did load it up on the protein which is nice.... But idk if the high sodium levels are worth it.

I wish my service was better, but I got the service i paid for which was zero. They still brought my food out, but lowkey its not all my fault I didn't tip. They make you pay in advanced and for somereason I just expected they would bring it out togo. I dont really tip unless im being served and waited and and etc... so yes I was served the food, but wasnt exactly waited on or check on. With that said the food was above ok. Nothing wrong with cheap and good, unless the ingredients make your tummy hurt. Lol. Luckily it was not cheap quality like corner store ramen or anything. My broth was pretty quality also, but could habe used a slight bit more flavor in my opinion. It was a creamy broth and most places keep it clean so its normal that I want more flavor from creamy broth. Lucky for me their spice is actually spicy.

The chicken chashu wasn't chashu, it looked like just sliced up chicken breasts. It didn't have a flavorful broth and some ingredients tasted old. The nachos also had good toppings and fish, but the chips were stale.

It wasn't too busy midday on a Monday to go browsing around inside. The parking lot was easy to enter and exit without any issues. It's a bit small, but it's doable. Stopped by the cafe inside the market and ordered an Iced Lavender Matcha and the famous chocolate chip cookie 'The Cookie'. The Iced Lavender Matcha was good. However, it was VERY SWEET. You could definitely taste the lavender syrup that they used in the drink. The lavender flavor overpowered whatever amount of matcha was in the drink. The Cookie was great! Love eating them warm!

From the Hawaiian word "poke" meaning "to slice, cut crosswise into pieces, as fish or wood" (see…read moreWehewehe.org, a highly recommended reference for 'Olelo Hawai'i or Native Hawaiian words), this fast food poke experience includes limited dine in seating, boba drinks, ramyun surrounded by kitchy pirate decor. Does it work? Sure. They have the most pleasant bathroom I've ever walked into with their subtle lighting. None of that florescent lighting, yay! What I really appreciate, as a mom, were all of the pirate toys for our little one to play with so we could eat. I don't think enough restaurants have figured out that little secret to welcoming families to your establishment. The poke though had a LOT going on, perhaps too much. I'm Native Hawaiian, who used to work in a fish market, and I love the taste of fish. I don't think it needs to be buried under a gagillion flavors. The sauces could definitely be toned down. The imitation crab and seaweed salad offered subtle flavors and the rice, garbanzo beans and edamame helped balance out some of the other stronger flavors but the toasted garlic and onions were too overpowering. While they do offer build-your-own bowl options, it seems the pricier options. May be easier to request things on the side. For the record, grated carrots do nothing for poke bowls other than add unnecessary texture. I'd avoid them completely.
