I had high expectations, but since I wasn't particularly hungry, I sat down with a casual mindset, just planning to have a light meal. After finishing, my biggest takeaway was: how has this place managed to stay open for so long? Environment: The place is clean, and both the sushi counter and the freshness of the ingredients are evident to the eye. The chefs' uniforms are also very neat. Taste: Sorry, it's hard to put into words! I ordered the lunch combo. The server asked how I wanted my beef done, and I said medium rare would be fine. But the beef was really tough! The tempura was okay. My friend had the pork cutlet rice bowl--the cutlet wasn't crispy, and the sauce was poured directly on top instead of being served on the side as we requested. So neither of us finished our food and we left. Fun fact: Tempura, though it's deep-fried, actually has the second-lowest calorie count among all Japanese dishes. So what's the lowest? Sorry, I forgot. A long time ago, Japan was considered the end of the continent, so many things that made their way there were seen as reaching the ultimate destination. I'm obsessed with this restaurant. I've been for dinner and lunch. It's hard to find FRESH sushi around Tacoma but this place delivers. You'll often see the owner, Jose, making the sushi orders himself. He was trained by a Japanese sushi chef who in turn was trained in Japan. The ingredients are very clean and the portions are a good value. The sashimi slices are thick! The scallops are velvet in your mouth. The tempura is cooked perfectly. The sushi roll selections are unique and not like other places that just offer the same flavor. Have you ever ordered a couple rolls and they're basically the same? That won't happen here. Service was fast during the lunch rush. Server was friendly. No complaints. The restaurant is clean and the building it's in has a lot of character and history being in DT. Loved this place and can't wait to return. They don't appear to have an online reservation system or website but they are on social media. We called and left a VM in the morning requesting a reservation for 7 and they called back in a couple of hours and confirmed. My family loves sushi but we usually stay other side of the bridge so this was new to us and really blew away our recent experiences elsewhere both in terms of the service and the food. The sushi/sashimi was incredibly fresh and the menu extensive. Everything from agedashi tofu to ramen to tempura was amazing and the fresh sushi was incredible. The ambience is also perfect- quaint little Japanese restaurant with nice decor and no TVs. It's situated down from the street on an alleyway so it's a bit hidden. Three of us stopped in at dinner time. Was really cold out and I saw the menu had ramen online. The restaurant is tastefully decorated in a really nice spot downtown on Broadway. We were greeted right away and service was great. I'm solely rating on our meals. We shared the vegetable tempura, which was fantastic, but the smallest portion of tempura I've seen in a restaurant. My son and I did not care for our ramen- we tried the miso. We were not given any extra sauces to flavor our broths. My typical experience with ramen is depth after depth of flavor- they both just fell way short. My husband's yakisoba was ok- we all picked off his plate. Ordered from this restaurant via DoorDash on Aug. 7th. While they were quick to accept the order and the delivery went smoothly, there were major issues with the quality of the tuna. Having ordered, among other items, two (2) orders of Tuna Nigiri, and one order of their J-Roll Maki (spicy tuna wrapped with avocado and sliced tuna) - all the tuna-based items were inedible. The membrane was not removed from any of the tuna, a process called "teshin", making it seem as though we were chewing on rubber bands. Went tonight for the first time in 10 years as we just moved back to the area and it was just as good as ever. The Katana Maki was great, would get it again. Fujiya Japanese Restaurant It's 6:00, dark and pouring outside. You're staying in a sketch but totally dope renovated boiler room in downtown Tacoma. You and your friends are drunk off your asses, and nothing in the world sounds better than sushi but you can't drive. Also, you're too out of it to read your card number to place delivery. So you walk down the 45 degree angle street and cross into a super weird alley, for some awesome dank grub courtesy of Fujiya. Yeah, that's what happened last night. :P We stumbled down to Fujiya. After staring at the menu for what must have been 15 minutes, I bellied up to a Spicy Tuna Maki Roll (tuna, cucumber, scallion, fish roe, $12.95) and Chicken Yakisoba (pan fried thin noodles and vegetables, $12.95). The food came out super quick, much quicker than the amount of time it took me to decide. My Tuna roll was absolute love at first sight. It tasted super fresh and the fish seemed to melt in my mouth. My only suggestion is to roll the rice tighter or use stickier rice because several rolls fell apart making it difficult to enjoy. On the other hand, no complaints about the noodz. It came with so much! Tremendous value. I can't believe how delicious it tasted for such a low price. Even better news everyone I was with enjoyed their food, too. Also, it was reassuring to see the lengths Fujiya went to comply with COVID-19 health protocols. I was super appreciative of the plastic covers that separated me from direct contact with the waiter. Also, everyone working wore a mask. And they implemented their mask policy as well. We watched as a young waitress bravely confronted a couple about putting their masks on or leaving (yeah, even in Tacoma).
