The Food was yummy! The service was excellent! The fried whiting was my favorite. The punch was really yummy also.

I called ahead about a larger sized order and spoke with the owner who was very accommodating. He suggested I order from the à la carte menu online which was a very easy process. I ordered 10 pieces of fried Catfish and those each came with a biscuit on the side. I received very generous portion sizes of fish and it was absolutely delicious and complimented by all of my guests. The fish had a very light coating of breading that was well seasoned and very crispy. The biscuits were very delicious as well. When I arrived for pickup, I noticed a cooler that contained Peach Cobbler and Apple Cobbler and added several to my order. These were both very good and received rave reviews from my guests. This place was not good. Ordered fried shrimp. Rubber, like they had been fried previously, and dunked a second time to warm them up. Asked for cocktail sauce - dude handed me nearly empty Great Value bottle from Walmart. Which is ok I guess - until you find out that two lunch platters with drink and tip was EIGHTY DOLLARS. I finally tried JW's Fish and Biscuits after some hesitation about the flavor, especially since we haven't had a great soul food spot in this area for a long time--and because the cakes didn't impress me. However, I was pleasantly surprised! I had the catfish and croaker, both well-seasoned and not overly crispy. The biscuits are sweet, fluffy, and delicious. The mac and cheese is tough to perfect in large batches, so I'd probably skip it next time, but the wings were a great size and tasted good. They do offer desserts, but I digress. Location is in the cut but definitely worth finding. There are daily specials which include ox tails and baked turkey wings. The biscuit is really more of a smooth cornbread. Loved it! Thanks to a friend who knows all the best places, I have introduced my family to JW's Fish and Biscuits in Sterling, VA. Oh. My. Good. Gracious. This is the food I need when my soul is weary and my heart is heavy. So far we've been twice and had the whiting, croaker, smothered pork chops, fried okra, mac & cheese, collards, cabbage, wings, rice & gravy, green beans, peach cobbler, banana pudding, and the corn bread. It's not like my mom's and my grandma's, but it's awfully darn close. When the owner stopped by to make sure we were happy I asked him if he was from South Carolina because his rice and gravy reminded me of Grandma's. Turns out he was born 11 miles away from where she was born! This is down home, from the bottom of your soul food. JW is the owner's grandfather and his picture hangs in a place of honor in the restaurant. The owner created this restaurant to honor the skills of his ancestors and they were some mighty, mighty people. As soon as you walk in, the lovely man at the register greets you and makes you feel at home. When I asked for peach cobbler and he said the were unfortunately out, the owner jumped out from the counter and said "hold up, my wife owns the bakery around the corner. I'm gonna run and go get you some." Five minutes later he strode back in with a pan of fresh, hot peach cobbler that my husband from North Carolina said was as close to his Grandmama's as he's had in the DMV. Besides soda they have three varieties of punch and I swear some of it is the red drink we had in the summer back in the day. The owner said some people feel his food is too healthy because he is judicious with the salt. But he has a full counter of hot sauces and seasonings for you to adjust to your taste. It's not going to be exactly like your food at home; but it's so good that doesn't matter. This is some delicious, pretty food. Stopped by while in the area, a little off the main road, No other customers in the building at the time. Decided to get Catfish Platter with Green Beans and Mac and Cheese. Customer service was good, Fish was fried fresh after making the order, which was a positive. Green beans and Mac and Cheese were great. The Catfish was actually "Swai". It was not the American Catfish most restaurants serve, instead it was the Vietnamese cheaper version of catfish. The meat is not as firm, and lacks a little flavor. Although fried and seasoned correctly, I was disappointed in that part of it. I'd try it again, but maybe try the croker or whiting if I get the fish. read more

Tucked away on a side street in an industrial/commercial building, you could miss it, but they have a light in the window and sign over the door. If they had salad or "healthy" options I didn't notice, because I came here for the good stuff- we tried Bang Bang shrimp, catfish, ox tail (special) and wings with waffles. Wings were crispy outside, juicy and had flavor. Oxtail was a little different texture than I'm used to, but better for it, yams were so fresh and tasted a happy memory. Though everything was served to go, family and I ate in. Service was 10/10. Comfortable atmosphere, it's not huge, but enough seating for all that walked through the door when we were there.
