I seek out southern comfort food when I travel. Usually it ranges from edible to ok. JW's sits a very short distance off of the beaten path. But it is oh so worth the very tiny detour. We all picked different items so we could share. Everything was beyond delicious. For me it was the combo platter with shrimp and catfish with okra and Mac & cheese for the sides. Everything was seasoned and cooked perfect the shrimp were huge!!! You can taste the freshness in every bite. It's what I would imagine the perfect meal cooked by a southern grandma for Sunday dinner would taste like. I'm shocked how empty this place is for how amazing the food is. We happened to find this spot online when our original dinner destination unexpectedly closed early. We were craving fish fry and this place served. We ordered a couple platters of catfish and whiting along with some sides. Both fish were breaded and fried perfectly. Super flakey inside and crispy on the outside. The shrimp was so crispy and crunchy you can eat it whole tail and all. I haven't had enough collard greens to make an assessment of what is considered good as a baseline but I enjoyed them! Sweet potato fries were thick and crisp. Fried green tomatoes were also delicious. Grits were very cheesy, the biscuit was also pretty good. Sauce bar was a bit lacking as some bottles were empty. But we made do with what was there. Staff was very kind and patient while we were figuring out our order. Also checked in on us to make sure we were ok. This spot is a bit further from home but we will definitely return to try more of the menu. Good fish fry is a rarity in Northern Virginia, and this place is a gem. read more

JW's is tucked into an industrial park. Dennis was the host and the cook the day of our first visit. Dennis said they had been at that location for about one year. (NOTE: There is a sign that says "Temporarily closed on Mondays") The other patroons were eating and looked happy; so we proceeded to order. The menu is truly southern and I felt like I was back in the south. I had the fish platter (i.e., catfish) with okra and black eyed peas and a biscuit. My wife had the shrimp and grits she wanted. The food was fried prepared perfectly and was served hot in carryout containers. The biscuits seemed more like cornbread, but were good with just a hint of honey(?). One of those places that's better dine-in than takeout or ubereats. The collards were good but the flavor was surface. The Mac and cheese had great flavor but had a weird gritty texture to it, also was very runny. The French fries didn't have any salt. The wings would have been better fresh and still crispy, the sauce is good but the wings were soggy by the time I got them. The biscuits definitely tasted more like Jiffy but were still very tasty. The black eyed peas tasted like they were made by someone's great-aunt, a good thing btw. The whiting was tasty and flaky and had a good crunch. I recently placed an online order with JW Fish & Biscuits. My order was ready when I arrived, which I appreciated. The young man working the register greeted me with a smile and was very polite, respectful, and pleasant to deal with. It was clear he was new and still learning the register, and I thought it was great that the owner was standing beside him to help. Unfortunately, my impression quickly changed. When the employee handed me my order, the owner picked up a fork, tapped it on the counter several times, and said, "For the 50th time, you have to poke holes in the container." The owner then addressed him by the wrong name. Although he apologized for getting his name wrong, it was concerning that he was speaking to an employee in such a disrespectful manner while not even remembering his name. Those are two very different issues. Watching an employee be corrected like that, in front of customers, was uncomfortable and unprofessional. Constructive coaching should be done respectfully, especially when someone is still learning. While I waited for another item I had ordered, someone from the kitchen came out to let the owner know they had run out of white rice. The owner's response was, "Well, you should've told me that when I went to the store." Once again, this was said in front of customers. In less than 10 minutes, I witnessed two employees being spoken to in ways that I felt were disrespectful. I finally said something to the owner because it bothered me. He tried to explain that he wasn't yelling and that "this is how we do it." I told him my concern wasn't whether he was yelling--I didn't come there to hear employees being spoken to without respect. Correcting your staff is one thing; embarrassing them in front of customers is another. Instead of acknowledging my concern, he simply ended the conversation by saying, "Have a blessed day." The food may be good, but customer experience is about more than the food. It also includes the atmosphere and how employees are treated. I've noticed that nearly every time I've visited, there are new faces working there. After witnessing these interactions, I can understand why it may be difficult to retain employees. I hope the owner realizes that treating employees with dignity and respect not only creates a healthier work environment but also leaves a much better impression on customers. The young man at the register represented the business well with his professionalism and kindness. I hope he continues to be encouraged rather than discouraged as he learns. read more

I was sad to hear when Johnny Ray's shut down, but I didn't know a new restaurant emerged from the ashes. JW's is new to town & boy are they something. Location is a bit tucked away but well worth finding. Decided to try the turkey wings I kept seeing all over his social pages. The portion was huge.. AND it came with two additional sides. You have a choice of one or two wings, so just order two bc the difference in price was a no-brainer to just get two. All food came out piping hot, and was very tasty. Some days you may want a home cooked meal w/on having to turn on your stove or be in a swanky spot just for good grub. I left full with leftovers if I want a nibble later. This was my third time patronizing this establishment; however, my experience yesterday was quite disappointing. For starters, I ordered the red snapper meal for the second time. Unfortunately, the fish tasted as though it had been fried in old oil or possibly the same oil used for fries and onion rings. The flavor was noticeably off and not enjoyable at all. Additionally, the cabbage lacked seasoning and flavor, while the cornbread biscuit tasted as if it had been made with sour milk. The only items I was able to enjoy were the yams and the mac and cheese. I also love the bang bang shrimp. The shrimp are a nice large size, light and crispy fried and the sauce is delicious. My dad had the brisket, noticed he closed his eyes when he took his first bite and then said "so good!!" Service is great everyone is pleasant and helpful and it's always a pleasure to see the Chef.
