The beer is Ok, food is expensive. Their sitting sections temperature are hot or hotter, fix your AC. Very uncomfortable during summer. Main issue I have is the attitude of the manager. Went there on Sunday to watch a soccer game, we were told they will shut down at half time, and keep moving up kitchen closing time, we felt rushed, not welcome. This is really just a brewery that happens to serve food. When I found them on Google, it led me to OpenTable for a reservation. That's odd because it is open-seating without a hostess stand. I'm glad we just rolled with it. Also, seating is quite limited, even with the patio. We walked around twice before another couple got up, and we grabbed their seats. Now, with no hostess, this is a recipe for exactly what happened to us. No one came by the table for well over ten minutes (possibly fifteen). Once they did, we had very attentive service. None of that changes the fact that the guy who told us to "sit anywhere" walked past us four times without acknowledging our presence. The food is only average. The schnitzel appetizer was unseasoned and tough. The fried bologna sandwich for my wife was extremely good. She was not as fond of the potato salad. It did not really look like it was picking a side - neither German-style nor southern. She said it had some characteristics of German-style, but there was a definite mayo-based dressing. As for my pastrami sandwich...the pastrami was quite good. Honestly, I do not understand why it is so hard to find good pastrami in a state like Texas (you know, with such an historical mix of cultures that virtually spread it across the globe). This pastrami came in at a solid B. The remainder of the sandwich was completely awful. Tough bread, minimal cheese. I don't eat rotted cabbage (sauerkraut) or thousand island, so I put mayo on the sandwich. As a side note, whoever writes the menu should know that a sandwich with those four components is called a "Reuben," rather than "pastrami sandwich." Anyway, good beer, as should be the case with any brew-pub kind of place. The location is on a narrow, residential street. There is really only street parking, so you REALLY have to want to come here to deal with that level of nonsense. It was an interesting visit, but definitely not worth a return. Ever. read more

I was in town for a quick business trip and was provided a suggestion to try Künstler Brewing for their beers and German food. The location is a bit outside of downtown San Antonio in more of a residential area which took me a bit to find. There are several parking places out front and the interior is clean. There are several beers to choose from though I was disappointed that they were out of a few of them, to include their Kölsch which is my favorite. Putting aside my disappointment I tried their Arnold Schwarzbier, which was very good. They offer several different sizes so that you can sample more offerings without passing out. For dinner I had their wurst platter with spätzle and the Brezel appetizer. Both were very good. The service was quick and friendly and I would definitely be back, but more for the beer which was great. read more

It's been a hot minute since I last reviewed this spot, and they've had a big menu revamp, but the beer is still great, and the food even better. They have happy hour from 2-5pm, which means 50% off draft beers and lots of discounted yummies to eat. Decided to celebrate Fathers Day early as our kids are working all weekend so headed here / it was great but the menu and service not so so much! Checked out the menu before we arrived but when we got here they had a very paired down menu printed ! Told us they had several team members out so had to pair down the kitchen yet the printed menu was customized to the day and did not look freshly printed / and the server told us they had specific things on specific days - so just go with that and let people know ahead of time !! Beer menu was however correct so tired their pale ale/ IPA flight which was good! Food wise the cheese board was great and the pretzel buns were insane - warm, fresh and fluffy!! We met up with some friends for dinner - us being our first visit and them a few times. Parking was tight, but we managed to find a spot smack in front of the restaurant .. they do have an overflow lot close by. Know this restaurant is located in a neighborhood, not on a main street. Their seating consisted of a main/bar area, a sports area, and outdoor seating. We sat in the main room and was greeted by our server, who told us that she was fairly new. They make all their beers in house which was kinda cool! All were listed on the wall in the bar area. But anyways we ordered a few - the Confident Bitch , which was ok and I ordered a non alcoholic drink per server recommendation- the strawberry mint lemonade. Needed a good stir to get the strawberry flavor. We ordered: Schnitzel- generous portion with a nice mushroom gravy, but very bland. Hubby said it needed some salt or some kinda seasoning. Shrimp roll- very disappointed at how the shrimp was swimming in some kind of mayo. Shrimp was nice and meaty but the lemon dill aioli and arugula had no flavor at all. It needed salt and pepper, something ...but no condiments were available table side. The fries had no seasoning as well. I asked the server when ordering if I could substitute a salad instead fries, but she stated that was not possible. This is one of my favorite breweries in town! If a brewery can brew great beer & serve great food, it's solid! The workers are always attentive and friendly making you feel welcome. The main room has the German style pub setting. A big space with warm wood colors. They also have a side room with TVs to catchup on whichever sports event is going on. There's also a large outdoor area they've added recently if you are there with your pets along with a covered outdoor area in front of the place near the entrance. This place is not hard to find, but it is an unexpected location, so you may think you missed it, but it's there where all the cars are parked. The place is so clean and neat looking. They have outdoor seating, bar seating and tables inside. The atmosphere is laid back, sports on the tv above the bar and the service is impeccable! I had the Maxamillion Dunkle beer and it was so good, best I've had! My husband had a wheat beer and loved it. I ordered French fries and the pickled vegetables. The only negative about this brewery is that the name is hard to remember and you'll probably almost say a very naughty word when trying to recommend it to others. (Fun Fact: I was told to come here by a beertender at another brewery he stumbled over the name and I thought " 'scuse me?!") Usually when breweries say some line about honor tradition but also new/modern takes...its a red flag to me that the brewery is overly traditional. Not so here! This brewery had a plethora of lagers (my favorite) on tap from traditional to hoppy-and-cutting edge (my favorite-favorite). They had both a Cold IPA AND a West Coast Pilsner on tap. Usually, finding even one of those is a bughunt...but finding a brewery with BOTH?! The outdoor seating can be hot, but it's a very nice place to sit and on some weekends they have little vendors with handmade goods set up or live music. We havnt been to our favorite craft brewery in a while so we decided to visit Kunstlers over the weekend. The Brewery has evolved over the years and offers many locations to enjoy food and beverages but, we are always drawn to the front porch seating when weather permits. I love the rustic decor in the main taproom area and the beautiful garden space that offers a kid friendly area and a pergola to provide shade to patrons as well. The food is delicious and beautiful in its presentation and today was no different as we ordered the jumbo Bavarian Pretzel and the Currywurst. The Currywurst is perfectly crisp French fries topped with aioli sauce, curry Ketchup and a sliced brat. It had a beautiful presentation and was just as delicious as it was appealing to the eye. Just the perfect amount of flavor and seasoning to complement the crispy fries. I'm not a big beer person but when I visit Kunstler, I always find a good Stout to try because I prefer the rich, dark beer. For those who prefer other drinks, they have a pretty good wine list for a brewery. The service is always good with multiple servers checking in on our table. This place was great! I wish I could give 4.5 stars (just because for a slow time and sitting at the bar, service was rather oblivious and very slow.) But the food saved it from that, so 5 stars it is. We enjoyed the Belgian Van De Walle & Schrute Farms, hazy Night Witch. Half-price beer across the board and they have some great snack options at good prices too. Which, prior, could have stood next to the best places in Fredericksburg. The pork schnitzel is now about as plain as it can get and their house made demiglace is a waste of time. Even though they serve up mostly German fare, they were serving Pozole Verde as the soup of the day. I've been craving Pozole Verde for awhile now, so gave it a shot, and so glad I did - it hit the spot! During my visit on a weekday evening, this craft brewery pub was buzzing with customers in the front patio, in the main bar area, and in the game room. Vegan Schnitzel was made from four large cauliflower cutlets. I finished three, then the fourth for leftovers. I enjoyed three different beers: Hawaiian Fog Hazy IPA, Narcolepsy Coffee Kolsh, and The Northman IPA. If only I had room for dessert, I would love to try their Bier Choco Pudding. I really enjoyed the house salad, which had a tangy flavor reminiscent of German potato salad, and the addition of cooked potatoes in the mix was a nice surprise. I swore I wrote a review already for Künstler Brewery, welp I guess not, but here it goes! Many many visits stretching over years of living here around Southtown/Lone Star District. We come here with family, friends, and colleagues. Now that we have a baby, it is our go-to spot because we know they have a solid changing table situation. haha how the times have changed from babysitting with a growler in tow to just coming here for hours at a time to catch a game in their back brewing room aka "sports halle" as a couple of fans. We have always been a fan of their brews, especially the Fog beers, the classic Dortschlager on a slow pour (to note can't get that one in growler), and actually their Rosé on the menu. As far as food, you can guarantee it's going to be fresh, well cut, and well presented dishes. Not brewery dive food, but really a well thought out chef's menu. The Reuben and Schnitzel here is second to none! Must try! Also if you are just sharing with a table. The Pretzel and Cheese Board are solid choices! What a fun evening here overall! Alas, there was definitely lost potential. Reasons this place is a winner? Readers will want to come for the ambiance, scrumptious German fare, and crafty drinks (pun intended). Sadly, in glaring contrast was the paltry service we received, as well as some higher than expected prices without the food quality to match. Not a big drinker when it comes to alcohol, but the sips sampled were good. The drink connoisseurs with me, though, did give me their approval and recommendations! They seem to have rotating drinks and specials on tap, as well as wine options. Food was well prepared and ranged from average to excellent. Minor complaints only as far as taste, but some pricing was a little on the expensive side, especially for a gastropub setting, meant to be casual dining. We had the Spaetzle Macaroni and Cheese, not as cheesy as it could be but the spaetzle was tasty. Relatively easy dish done competently! Shrimp Roll on a pretzel bun was fine. Maybe $10 fine, not $18. Pretzel roll was a tad dry, shrimps seemed likewise dry even though they were dipped in a mayonnaise sauce. It came with toasty fries that weren't soggy and had a crisp texture, so that was nice. In contrast, the Schnitzel was impressive, glad the aptly named Künstler knows how to do German cuisine! Lightly breaded, the pork meat was succulent and tender, infused with the orange and their special sauce. Last but not least, The Big Haus from their specials board. Definitely big. But ultimately, really it was a huge pot of cabbage, potatoes, and sauerkraut, with some pork cheek pieces and the 3 large bratwurst. With a large bread roll on the side, nicely toasted. Readers want to know, was it good? The vegetables were roasted in some tasty seasoning and sauces, and the pork cheek pieces, although buried in there, were flavorful. Bottom line, yes, good. But not almost $40 good. Probably would have preferred getting the single bratwurst, on the regular menu, because those were the highlights. Ambiance. One of the few places I can say without much hesitation that outside dining is actually better than inside. The inside was pretty dark, relatively small with open kitchen and a small area displaying Künstler merchandise. Nice to see they try to be involved in the community. There were some brochures out for other local breweries, plus the city's Fiesta celebration medals. Outside includes the large patio as well as the beer garden complete with a playground to distract the children and a stage for live performances! This brings us to the largest disappointment. We walked in and out took almost five minutes before anyone even came to greet us, despite not being extremely busy on a weekday night. Patrons were mostly outside, where you can actually order online through their application. Eventually, we were told we could seat ourselves if we wanted to dine on the patio and that someone would come out shortly with menus. Ten minutes later, had to go in and get menus ourselves. Another five minutes later, someone came out to see whether we had been assisted. Waitress was friendly, took our orders. Drinks came out in a reasonable amount of time. For the food, we had to wait another twenty five minutes for some, almost forty for the rest. My description for the service provided here: cordial, but only the minimum required. Are we return patrons? Although it would be a pity to lose such a great hang out ambiance, as tasty and welcoming gastropub locales are not easy to find, one must consider their expectations. An exemplary dining experience with superior food and drinks, as well as ambiance and service, in a timely manner? Probably not.
