Sadly the worst service, on multiple occasions, that I've experienced at any camera store in the city. TLDR: If you are in any way exploring photography, or looking for input on cameras to rent or buy, I highly recommend taking your time and money elsewhere. As a frequent customer, I bought a used film camera here. The price was higher than similar models elsewhere, but I was in a rush before traveling and also willing to support a local business I felt I'd become familiar with. Despite being listed as tested and in excellent condition, the camera did not make it through a full roll before suddenly going dead. It comes with the territory, but as I had to buy another option, I brought the camera back to K&M. The store manager's first response was to ask what I had done to cause the camera not to work. When I explained the situation, he stated that they do not accept returns other than for store credit, no exceptions. When I asked they try to see if they could get the camera to work in that case, he took it into the back and came back shortly after, apologetically agreeing that the camera had not been up to standard. I was offered a refund, and I left the situation willing to call it a fluke, though I was disappointed by the immediate assumption that had been made and the indignant attitude I was met with despite remaining calm, clear, and respectful. This week, after continuing to shop at K&M, I stopped in wanting to explore film lenses to rent or buy. I soon understood what I was initially looking for was not commonly available, and so asked about alternate recommendations to rent or buy from their selection. I left the store with a specific model to rent from the business' separate online rental department. Unfortunately, it was not made clear to me that the rental department does not operate over the weekend (rentals must be made on a Friday, requiring a 3-4 day cost even if picked up and dropped off within a shorter window, as would have been with my case). As soon as I realized this, I stopped back in to ask what other options would be available. I was asked to come back at a later time to speak with a manager. Despite returning and waiting to speak with the person I was told to ask for, I was handed off to three additional team members. In speaking with person who was finally able to lay out a few options, I was told that my original request (the reco from K&M) was "not a professional choice" and that "I wouldn't have any need for that kind of camera unless I was planning to head into a war zone". The staff member jokingly asked if I "would even be getting paid" for the shoot I was looking for an option for, which felt inappropriate, and irrelevant to the functional ask we were discussing. He repeatedly suggested that I instead purchase a different used model, which would have come out to a similar cost as what I was looking to rent. When I calmy restated that I was interested in trying the specific model I had been recommended by renting it, instead of committing to something unfamiliar (again returning to the suggestions provided by their own team) I was told I was "throwing a lot at them and it wasn't clear what I wanted". I felt taken aback and at a loss, not only by the disrespect I was being met with, but the apparent lack of interest in making a sale or a profit from an intentional, motivated customer. As a passionate film photographer with over a decade of experience, I have up until now felt nothing but at home within the diverse photography community that exists in NYC. I am a member with several photography stores and have bought cameras and developed all over the city. Perhaps as a result, I continued to offer this store the benefit of the doubt, even acknowledging my own misunderstanding or lack of awareness within certain asks or areas of interest. I am disheartened to now view K&M as a business with a complete lack of regard for someone looking to build their skills, or invest in advancing a love of photography, let alone simply treat a customer with respect and validity. read more

Absolutely the worst customer service possible, I understand having a crappy day and not being in the best mood while working with customers all day HOWEVER the experience I had with the ~60 yr old bald man in the back was unacceptable. Was cussing just to say "bad" words which doesn't bother me but come on really keep it somewhat professional. Then the real problem, I simply wanted to get some screws replaced that are corroded or get an idea of the price. Nope told no you don't need to replace them and just wait until it gets worse before fixing a small problem to solve a bigger one down the road. Legit just looked at it and said it's only corrosion on the screw head, which I'm not sure how you can tell there is not corrosion on the body without removing the screw. Forgetting the fact that once the chemical process starts it doesn't stop and will continue to get worse. I also had to wait so I got to hear also how he interacted with other customers and safe to say it was not great especially the people in front of me who seems new to photography. Would be far better off just going to B&H if you're new or looking for gear. read more

I've been into K&M 3 times now and I'm going to keep going back. I'm a hobbyist/sort of novice - have lugged around my pentax k1000 for over a decade but in the past 2 months I started taking darkroom classes and I am INTO IT. I can't speak in-depth on equipment etc. but for customer service, this place RULES. Gonna shout out a few of the staff if you're lucky enough to come across these young people: **John** went in-depth about features, pros and cons on a few point-n-shoot cameras, but not in a pedantic or super salesy way, he really knew each camera crazy in depth, like I definitely was confident he's actually shot with them and really understands the cameras. I ended up walking away with a great camera that was on sale. **Dolly** super nice and patient with me as I asked a ton of questions about the 4 different types of film I was dropping off, they helped me get out of the store quick. I honestly think they could be a buck or two more expensive as compared to other shops but I'm still going to choose them. Went in on a Thursday, I got emailed gorgeous high res scans on Tuesday. **Armando** (If I recall this persons name correctly, sorry if this is incorrect! Appears Latinx, curly black hair) Was super helpful telling me about different film types and indulged many of my questions about photo processing science. Not gonna lie, I've been to other shops where I either felt like just a number, or where the people working had a holier-than-thou vibe. I'm so glad I found K&M! They are literally helping fuel my recent love for photography and darkroom which gives me a boost of confidence to feel supported by the universe for my new hobby read more

These jokers (K&M c/o Ross Kasovitz, who based on the comments below is apparently the owner) bought a digicam from my eBay photo store, presumably to resell at their brick and mortar store. Then they opened a return, claiming the camera was defective because the screen didn't turn off automatically. This was a simple setting in the menu. I even sent them a screen shot of the manual showing exactly what setting to change. I got an incoherent message from "Manuel" saying they closed the return, but they actually did not and sent it back anyway. You'd think that people who sold cameras professionally would be able to navigate a settings menu, but apparently not. I can only surmise that they are yet another typical unethical New York photo store and returned it as "'defective" because they wanted to save on postage, since in defect returns, eBay makes the seller eat both the original and return shipping. I thought this kind of behavior had gone the way of the dodo when most of these outfits were killed off by the digital revolution, but apparently not. read more

A great camera store with a HUGE selection of cameras (35 mm film, point and shoot film cameras, video cameras, polaroids, etc). The prices have a decently wide range depending one what type of camera (brand, aesthetic, etc) you're looking for. I was in the market for a new point and shoot camera and the staff was very nice and very patient while I looked around and asked questions. I got a used Minolta camera in excellent and fully functional condition. They made sure I was all set with my new camera, they put in a new battery and offered to put in the film for me. K & M Camera also has a wide variety of films to choose from and I personally think they have the best prices in the city. I will definitely be coming back here for all my camera needs! read more

I brought my Mamiya 645 1000s in to have them take a look at the light meter inside my AE prism finder because it seemingly wasn't working. The guy named Don seems to be helpful; I mean, he gave me a free lens cap for my troubles since I lost mine for the camera, but I couldn't care less since ultimately he broke my camera even more while trying to tinker with it to see what the problem was. I mean, he was straight up scratching the connection points with a pocketknife, scratching up the interior metal of my camera... and COME ON, because I'm sure you can clean out the grime and bacteria without having to scratch it off with a knife. That seems odd to me, but I didn't question it in the moment until I looked at my camera later, after I left, and noticed all these scratch marks he made. While he was doing that, which I can appreciate to an extent since he was trying to fix the problem for me for free, however in the process of doing so, he somehow managed to break the shutter in the process of doing so. Now the camera has an issue where the top shutter button is locked in, and every time I wind the film and advance it, it continues to fire shots without stopping before each point where I would then press the shutter myself before winding it to the next frame. I literally have no idea how that could've happened, but it seems like it only occurred because he was being generally pretty rough with my camera. The customer service is godawful because I would keep calling them back, telling them about this issue, and they would tell me that they would contact the connections they have with Mamiya technicians yet would never follow through and would force me to keep calling them over and over. I gave up at this point because I don't trust them with my camera, nor did they seem to know how to solve a simple fix. I'm clearly an idiot because the light meter issue in my AE prism finder only turns on when the shutter dial is set on the red button, which, yeah, I could have figured that out through YouTube. But you would think these people at K&M would know that something super obvious like that, because it wasn't a problem with the camera; it was just me not knowing how to activate this type of prism finder. So this employee did not need to scratch my camera up for no reason and added further damage to my shutter, which is now out of it too. It's just completely unnecessary, and I will not be taking my cameras back there anymore. read more

I was meeting up my GF there right. She was a bit late, so I look around in the store. Then all of a sudden one of the managers I think starts to follow me around the store. Fucking weird and unprofessional and im a white man. Imagine If I wasn't. Also they resell their cameras for ridiculous prices. For example at B and H they sell the canon eon 5d mark 2 for 350. On eBay it's 225-250 in good condition. That's fair right. But these guys or should I say idiots are selling it for 550 or 599. Lol. Anyways I left the store. By far the worst customer experience I've ever had with any company across any type of business in my life. Words can't describe how poorly they communicate and how nonexistent the customer service communication actually is. I dropped a camera off to be repaired over eight months ago and not only have I still not gotten it back, I've called about 15 times and spoken to 10 different Employees over that span, each promising to call me back with updates and not one of them actually updating me on anything. They took my money, my camera has still not been returned to me, and I have absolutely no idea what's going on. Terrible company. read more

Horrible customer service , spent over $400 dollars for film I needed for a job. What was delivered to me was an open chewy box. Contacted them right away and they did nothing but give me a run around to file an insurance claim. It did not phase them at all that fedex isn't handling there packages properly. After arguing with them for an hour I finally got them to open a claim with FedEx only to be told a month later it was denied . They did not reach out to me once with any updates nor did they reimburse me. I doubt they even opened a claim since I never got a claim number. I don't see how it could be denied when the proof is literally in the tracking system. I will be filing a chargeback with me bank. Get your customer service in order k&m. Awful experience buying a tripod from their Amazon store. They required a signature, which is okay, but they also put restrictions on the shipment so I wasn't able to re route. I've never seen ANYONE do this. Then, after only 2 attempts by FedEx, they requested for the item to be shipped back to them. As a result, I'm going to a shoot without a tripod. This company is an absolute nightmare to deal with. Don't even bother. read more

I went to K&M seriously intending to buy a used Leica M body, but I left vowing never to return. The man behind the counter was incredibly rude and condescending - when I picked up a camera with my left hand (because I'm left-handed), he scoffed at me and said "obviously you've never used one of these before." He then proceeded to give me the most condescending "lesson" in basic camera functions that I've ever received. On top of that, at one point he refused to take any more cameras out of the case for me to try until I bought something - never mind the fact that at that point I'd only tried maybe two cameras, and this was a potential $3K+ purchase. I'm not exaggerating when I say I've never experienced worse service in any other store in my life. read more

As a neighborhood store fairly close to me, I want to rate this place higher. The place has a grungy feel to it. The salespeople vary in quality with the seemingly less experienced ones being more enthusiastic. I have made a few purchases here of film, paper, etc. I even got a welcome note from Michael at the store, to which I responded and then never heard back. Paper that I purchased less than a couple of months ago has been priced up by over 10% ("prices go up" I overheard the salesperson saying ... "quite arbitrarily", he should have added). Disappointing service ... condescending attitude. They also charge you different prices in-store versus online. Seems odd. It is unlikely that I would be back here, unless I am in a bind or I lose my way trying to find B&H. What a shame for the one photo supplies store in Tribeca to be so lame. read more

This review is for their repair service. They did fix my camera correctly, but customer service is pretty bad, and they're a bit disorganized. They said they would have it ready in Two weeks. Instead it took two months, with no follow up. Each time I called they couldn't even find my camera in the system, could never connect me to the person that's in charge of repairs, and zero updates. I had to constantly call, nobody ever knew anything, they always said they'd call me back and never did. Had to be on top of them to even get my camera back. Again, they did fix my camera properly though. If you don't have any other place to go , then I guess try this place... but it's kind of head ache. read more
