Chicken Liver. $6.89. Bundle: $11.49. One of my dad's all-time K&W Cafeteria favorites.
    Daniel B.

We had dinner here this past Sunday and I loved it, from the food to the service to the atmosphere. It was a blast from the past. For traditional Southern comfort food in a casual, cafeteria setting served with friendly, Southern hospitality, look no further. Our family used to eat at the K&W Cafeteria in High Point a lot in the 90s. When I returned to visit my parents in the 2000s and 2010s, we went to J&S Cafeteria on Samet Drive more instead. During those years, my parents preferred J&S over K&W. Both K&W and J&S in High Point have been closed for years now. The High Point K&W closed in January 2020: https://www.goldsborodailynews.com/2020/09/11/kw-cafeterias-file-for-chapter-11-bankruptcy-protection/ The last verifiable time I ate at a K&W was in High Point in 2006. The address for that location was 1661 Westchester Dr, High Point, NC 27262. The building still sits vacant today. I've driven past it several times over the years. Maybe I'll write a Yelp review for it later, in memoriam: https://www.yelp.com/biz/k-and-w-cafeteria-high-point This review is for the K&W at 3710 S Holden Rd, Greensboro, NC 27406. My dad found this location on Google. I thought he was over K&W, but I guess not. It's in the same shopping center as ParTee Shack mini golf. Almost everything I remember about K&W is the same, some 30 years later! This includes the classic cafeteria line that ends with the bread station (before drinks) and the charming, old-school dining room, right down to the carpet and furniture. At checkout, the lady in front of us even paid in cash with exact change (coins). This place is a time capsule. Visit while you still can. At the time of writing this review (September 5, 2025), there are still nine K&W Cafeterias in operation. That includes five locations in the Triad: two in Greensboro, two in Winston-Salem, and one in Burlington. This chain has been around since 1937. When I was a kid, my go-tos were grilled chopped steak and baked spaghetti. I was tempted to get one of them and relive the past, but instead I got the fried whitefish with coleslaw and tartar sauce and bundled it with two sides: yams and greens (turnip greens). The "meat and two" combos here are called "bundles." The whitefish bundle cost $13.49. I added an extra vegetable of cabbage ($2.89) and dessert: butter pecan pie ($3.69). I was also tempted to get garlic bread like old times, but I'd already gotten more than enough food. My dad got his usual / favorite: chicken liver and onions. He bundled it with yams and I think baby lima beans (butter beans). That rang up to only $11.49. My niece had the baked chicken bundle ($11.49) with green beans and yams. She added an extra side of stewed apples ($2.89). After tax and before tip, the total for the three of us was $49.04. I ordered a lot and was responsible for $21.42 of that. My dad had cash to tip our server, so he tipped her cash directly. I think you can also leave a tip on your bill at checkout if you pay with a card. While K&W isn't a full-service sit-down restaurant, there are still servers who take care of you, so remember to leave a tip. Our server Chaszay was very nice and attentive. Shout-out to her. She was great. The rest of the staff was polite as well. The cashier lady was friendly. As for the food, it really hit the spot. I enjoyed everything. In the ordering line, I asked one of the employees what kind of fish the fried whitefish was. They answered "whitefish," which is what the sign said. I meant specifically, like cod, haddock, pollock, or tilapia. Where I live now, in Georgia, I've liked getting fried catfish at Piccadilly Cafeteria. K&W's fried whitefish was crispy and satisfying, especially with the tartar sauce and coleslaw that came with it. The yams, which all three of us got, were like a sweet potato souffle or sweet potato casserole. It had a crispy, caramelized top and was very sweet. My dad commented on how sweet it was. My college-aged niece and I thought the items like the yams, stewed apples, and butter pecan pie were sweet and dangerously yummy and addictive. I couldn't stop eating them. The greens were tasty, but would have been better if the restaurant still carried the Texas Pete Green Pepper Sauce: https://texaspete.com/shop/green-pepper-sauce/ That and the more common Texas Pete Original Hot Sauce were my go-to condiments at K&W in High Point. Chaszay told me that they don't carry the green pepper sauce anymore. I had some of my dad's chicken livers and they were good. The portions were generous. While it is a Southern food, I've found that chicken livers appear to be more popular in North Carolina than in Georgia. I get funny reactions from people in Atlanta when I tell them that I like chicken livers and, to a greater extent, liver pudding (which is more of a North Carolina specialty). To be fair, my dad didn't think the quality was as good as it used to be. Admittedly, I was tasting a bit of sweet nostalgia.

Black eyed peas and collards for good luck on new years.
    Leah W.

I go to k&w once a year... on new years to have black eyed peas for cents and collard greens for dollars. Some people get cornbread for "gold" but I skipped it this time. There is always a wait, because it's a cafeteria so there's a line. The food is okay. Like it's edible, decent, but not great. Not bad. Just meh. For me, this is the easiest way to get my dollars and cents for good luck and hang out working on goals with my friend.

As a kid my family would frequently come to K&W. If you want "home cooked " meal this is the place to come. Food is delicious and the staff are always friendly.

The Holden Rd location is the last decent K& W. Service is fast. They usually have what I want. Good temp could be hotter but hey it's not made to order. So what can I expect.

Country style steak with corn and green beans
    Ebony M.

I did K&W To-Go instead of eating inside. The to-go is separated from the mainn cafeteria. Even though there were several customers in front of me the staff of 2 got the orders completed in an quick manner. My foot was still hot even though I had a 20-minute Drive home. Country style steak was delicious as always...corn and green beans just melted in my mouth as I chewed. Prices are always reasonable!! My picture posted will have my added black pepper because I'm a fan of it. Heart-warming food good for my soul on a cold afternoon.

Nice piec of Whitefish & Slaw for $4.35
    Fred B.

This is another one of those restaurants that simply is what it is - a bright, clean cafeteria that serves tasty, inexpensive food in decent portions. If you want more, this is not the place to find it. The Fried Chicken ($3.40 for 1/4) is very good, as is their fried seafood - nice piece of Whitefish with slaw for $4.35. Most of the veggies are good to very good - run about $1.15 to $1.30. Good service, as well - they keep your drink filled. Our lunch with 2 entrees and 4 veggies, and a drink was $13.61. That's a couple of value meals.

Preset menu selections for breakfast and lunch along with a changing daily lunch entree offered. This resource is a welcome opportunity to catch a bite on site at Medical Park Hospital if needed. The Deets: Recently a family member has surgery at Medical Park Hospital (with Novant Health network) and while at the hospital that day, I used their on site cafeteria a couple of times. The cafeteria is located on the first floor near the main entrance. It is not a particularly large cafeteria but has a pretty decent selection for breakfast and lunch, open 7am-3pm Monday-Friday. The menus are pretty set and premade for the most part. For breakfast the usual items are available such as eggs, bacon, grits, etc. and I had a good breakfast there with noting the grits and bacon particularly and surprisingly good. For lunch, they have the "always available" items of hamburgers and grilled chicken then a particular daily lunch entree. When I was there, it was the Tuesday taco bar for the daily lunch entree. I had their hamburger with potato wedges for lunch (no fryer there, confirmed by staff) and I liked it. What most may consider a pretty low key type of cafe stop is a real strong 4 out of 5 stars for me because of the awesome staff there. Each time I went in, they were so nice, positive, patient, helpful, informative (I had so many questions), and provided excellent service. When you or someone you care about is in the hospital, having this type of staff helping make your day better really means a lot (the whole staff at this hospital from the lobby greeter to prep/OR area to floor staff to the great cafeteria staff mentioned displayed this positive and helpful demeanor). Having a pretty long day at the hospital, I am glad this hospital cafeteria stop was available and easily accessible...they helped make such a day a little less stressful.

Terrace Cafe is one of three cafeterias located at UNC Hospitals' main campus in Chapel Hill (UNC…read moreHealth/UNC Medical Center). My wife regularly works at the hospital and will sometimes bring home leftovers of her food from Terrace Cafe. On occasion, she'll also grab us a takeout lunch or dinner. The food has always been tasty and I don't know exactly why, but I've always found it to be a treat, probably because it's hospital food. For me, I guess part of it is the novelty of it. The only other hospital I've had food from is Grady Hospital in Atlanta. UNC's hospital food blows Grady's out of the water. Terrace is located on the 2nd floor of the main hospital (Memorial). If entering the hospital from the main front entrance, you'll want to make a left to get to the cafe. There will be a sign for Terrace and a stairway leading up. The cafeteria isn't huge, but it's big enough to have a few different stations/counters. It's like a mini food court, but with only one set of checkout lanes for the multiple vendors/stations inside. The stations have names like "Continental Traders" and "Flatiron Grill." This isn't like a mall or airport food court with brand name vendors like Chick-fil-A and Sbarro. At the time of writing this review, my favorite meal from Terrace Cafe so far has been the fried chicken from Continental Traders. It's branded as "Carolina Chicken Co." I've had it multiple times now. The chicken is seasoned and spiced well. It tastes great. The dark meat is tender and juicy. There's a small additional charge if you want all white meat. The cabbage, collard greens, potatoes au gratin, red beans and rice, mac and cheese, and mashed potatoes and gravy sides are delicious. For healthy food, I thought the salmon with lemon jam was pretty decent. It was tasty even as leftovers. From Continental Traders, my wife has enjoyed almost everything she's tried. That includes chicken pot pie, shepherd's pie, baked chicken, and sweet potato. The only thing she didn't like was the sweet potato side once. The other times, it's been fine. I've tried several of the "Fast Breaks" items. These are grab-and-go meals in clear, plastic, snap-shut containers near the entrance. They include things like salads, sandwiches, snacks, and desserts. I'd say most of these items are or look par for the course such as the spring mix salad and protein box (walnuts, pecans, cheddar cheese cubes, dried cranberries). Of the items from Fast Breaks, the ones I've liked most thus far have been the apple pie, cheesecake with strawberry topping, and Cobb salad. Also near the entrance, there's a display case of self-serve pastries and treats. I believe they're branded as "Great Beginnings." They consist of breakfast foods like bagels, muffins, and Danishes. There's a neat little contraption that blows air into a stack of disposable plastic gloves, allowing you to put on a glove with just one hand to then grab your pastry of choice. I tried the "Black and White Cookie" from this display and it was alright. It tasted like a cheap donut with chocolate and vanilla icing. My wife and I have had the breakfast burritos from Flatiron Grill many times. They're filling and yummy. My wife also likes to get the breakfast sandwiches such as the ones with avocado and egg inside. Those are good too. In general, the breakfast menu is arguably the best thing Terrace Cafe offers when you consider the combination of taste, variety, and price. Flatiron Grill also makes customizable omelets and burgers. Across the way, where they have sealed packs of cereals, there is sometimes a station that serves made-to-order crepes and waffles. "Red Ginger," to the right of Flatiron Grill, sells Asian food. I've never had it, but my wife said it's okay. She said it's like Chinese takeout food. Things like fried egg rolls, stir-fried noodle bowls, and fried dumplings. Sometimes, the station sells burrito bowls. My wife said the burrito bowls taste similar to Chipotle. In the middle of the space is a fridge with self-serve packaged sushi, like grocery store sushi. It's labeled "Sujin Sushi." Like Red Ginger, I haven't tried any of the Sujin Sushi for myself yet. My wife said it's mediocre. By the looks of what I saw, I'd have to agree with her, but I'd be willing to give it a shot sometime. I did try the seaweed salad and even though it looked a little discolored (light), it tasted better than I expected, so maybe I shouldn't knock it until I've tried it for myself. Additionally, Terrace Cafe sells other snacks like bagged potato chips (Frito-Lay, Carolina Kettle Chips) and bottled drinks (soda, tea, water). There are condiment stations and a place for you to heat up (toast, microwave) your food. My wife uses FreedomPay to pay for her meals at Terrace Cafe. With FreedomPay, she gets a discount on top of the listed prices so the food and beverage here end up being a nice value. The cafe has seating inside. If you want to eat outside, go to the courtyard outside Starbucks.

"Solid option for on-Duke-campus slightly upscale lunches"…read more As its predecessor which moved to Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd, this "new iteration" of the Divinity Refectory offers slight upscale dining options on campus relative to the usual burgers/ pizza/ fast food. They often have some sort of Indian dish in a sauce with tofu or a casserole, lots of vegetables, vegetarian/ vegan options (e.g., beef vs. veggie lasagna), etc. They also have sandwiches, soups, and they have a pretty nice collection of varied fancier desserts including cheesecakes and creme brulee. I tend to find the portions a bit small, but I'm a big eater. It's cafeteria-style-- you walk through a line and order what you want, and pay at the end. The food is fresh, and the service is friendly. Price is slightly higher than some on-campus options (e.g., Panda Express), but the food is certainly a cut above, so it's not unreasonable. Somewhat surprisingly, they don't have any sodas on tap-- only bottles. No credit cards accepted. Given the proximity to the administrative building, this place is frequented by various Duke deans and professors, as well as students taking professors out for lunch (through the "FLunch" program).

So Ive been going to div cafe nearly every day for the past two years (recently less though) so…read morehere are my thoughts. Overall, I'd say the quality of div food has gone down for breakfast. It's supposed to be one of the healthier places on campus but some of their foods aren't as good for you as you might think of you look at the ingredients (ie the eggs, which taste more like the liquid eggs than real eggs...more on that below). Breakfast: I used to be obsessed with div oatmeal but the past few months it's really hit or miss. The baked oatmeal also isn't very healthy, it's loaded with sugar and butter. Sometimes it's very dry and other times it's really creamy. Once in a while it's delicious though (less so recently). This oatmeal is not vegan and I'd love to see a healthier, vegan rendition. The eggs are often very oily and taste like liquid eggs rather than farm fresh eggs like the cafe advertises. I usually custom order egg whites since those taste more real, even though they're usually also drenched in oil. The fruit here is really overpriced. You might get 3 strawberries for $4... recommend going elsewhere for fruit. My go-to breakfast here is now the low fat Greek yogurt (I think the healthiest thing you can get here) with a side of organic, crunchy peanut butter. I sometimes add a bit of honey and it's delicious. The other options are usually lemon ricotta pancakes, French toast, etc. They also have breakfast burritos, potatoes, and grits. I haven't tried these but they look alright. Lunch: I'm not always a fan of the lunch specials but when I do go for lunch I'm usually not disappointed. Beware, the line is generally pretty long although it goes by quickly. The shrimp etouffe last week was INCREDIBLE. It comes with a side of veggies although they usually give you very minimal (I got 3 pieces of broccoli...). The week before, I got the shrimp stir fry and I asked for less sauce. The server still took extra sauce from the bottom of the pan and poured it onto my plate.... they don't really listen to requests when there's a long line. Their pastas are pretty good and the buffalo Mac and cheese is great, although definitely not a healthy option. Their wraps are decent. If you're in the mood for one its not a bad choice. The refrigerated foods (salads, sandwiches, ...) are not my favorites. They don't heat up the sandwiches there so if you get a pbj you just eat it cold. They also have apples and peanut butter. This is good but I'd recommend just buying an apple and asking for a side of peanut butter since it's much cheaper.
