Not much to look at from the outside nor inside. Located off I 40 it was an excellent place to meet some local friends while passing through Greensboro.Breakfast all day. Jakes Diner has gone through a lot of changes over the years that I've been here. Now I actually find that I'm enjoying their meals. I feel like I'm getting great service and better quality food. It may not be the first place I think you to go, but it's definitely on a list of... I know what I can eat there, that's really good and it won't break my bank. read more

Jake's wendover has no heat. This has nothing to do with the recent weather because this problem was last year. They need to close and get their heat fixed. It's no fun trying to eat with coat on. I eat here at least three times a week. The food and the service is exceptional, but asking people to endure a colder atmosphere than outside is unacceptable. read more

Nice standard diner faire. I opted for a no-meat breakfast lovers plate and chose to sun in home fries for the grits. I liked that they mathed out the substitution costs right in the menu. They got the cook on my eggs right and my home fries were okay, but not amazing. It didn't seem like they seasoned the food much, but there was salt on the table. We did have to wait about 20 mins to get a table and service was slow, but that's pretty forgivable since we went on a busy weekend morning. People are packed pretty tight in the space, so it's loud and not for socially phobic folks. But, they fed us and we were really happy. This place is a solid option for a diner breakfast. read more

This is a solid 4 star experience. Not a bad thing. Jake's is one of those local places which fall into the IYKYK category. It's a diner. While it may not be a James Beard award winning or Michelin starred establishment, you can get some good food at reasonable prices. Yes. You can get breakfast 24/7. I am not of that cloth. There were 7 of us having a "farewell family breakfast". I've been here a few times. Food is usually good. Everyone ordered breakfast except me. The breakfast portions were generous. Nobody left hungry. Now the grits were in a cup. Look at the pics. Again, we had full bellies. The group roast was stacked on a plate in the middle of the table. I liked that approach. You see the pics. No room on the plates for it anyway. Shout out to our sever whose name I don't recall. This young man was on point! He worked his tables like a pro. No grunts groans or scowls when we asked for items. Kept our drinks filled. Ambiance? I mean it is a diner. The place was packed for Sunday morning. Oh, I've attempted the "after the club closes" run. We didn't because we're were too hangry to wait on take out. So glad this restaurant survived the pandemic. While the service was good, everything else was disappointing. My French toast was white in the center and lacking in flavor and the coffee was disappointing. Our very kind waitress kept checking in to make sure our food was "okay," and honestly that's the best way to describe the food. We have been coming here for literal decades but lately I'm worried things are just going downhill. We are here now and it's about 90° inside and the servers say they can't change the temp!?!? When I received my check I asked did they honor Veterans and the server said the system was messed up and they couldn't add the discount. I then mentioned to her, "whenever I get my Veterans discount, I apply it to the servers tip." Also, whenever I tip, I also round up to a whole number with .00 change. When I received my credit card statement, it had a completely different amount which was more than I paid. I called back up to the restaurant and the manager told me, I hit the wrong button, and she gave a bunch of other b.s. excuses why my card was charged like it was. We were in town and looking for a breakfast place for a Saturday morning. While driving to the Waffle House we saw the sign for Jake's Diner next door and opted for it instead. Glad we did. We walked in and immediately sat at the counter. Our server was quick and attentive. It is a bit chilly sitting at the counter in the winter every time the door would open. My husband and I were both pleased with our breakfast orders. I had 2 eggs over medium with upgrade to hash browns, bacon and toast. It was perfect diner breakfast. He had eggs and pork chops with grits and was content. Sodas are Pepsi products and were $3.50 each. They add a surcharge for using a credit card as stated on the bill, we opted to pay in cash. read more

I visited your restaurant on W Wendover ave today 01/21/2025. I placed an order for 2 sausage egg and cheese sandwiches with mayo and onion. When the order came up I opened the sandwich to inspect to see if it was done correctly. There was not no mayo and onions on both sandwiches. I told the waitress to make sure that it was added and that did not happen so I sent the order back to be remade. it was not remade, it went to the back line and according to the health department any for touch by the customer should never be sent back to the kitchen due to contamination. The cook tried to be funny by putting tons of mayo in this sandwich and sent it back. Well when i opened it there was so much mayo on the sandwich it was falling out of the wrapper. So I got angry and told the waitress I wanted them remade, which was not done again. I watched the cook take the sausage and egg off with his hands and placed it on new bread. very disgusting. Mary Beth, the manager, who surprisingly was training another employee snapped at me for saying hi. then she held a brief conversation with another staff member about me. Well... we are done. My family has been eating at Jake's for over 2 decades and have enjoyed it many more times than I can count. We loved the wait staff, the food and management. But over the last couple of years things, especially with the Drawbridge and Battleground locations, have just been terrible. Forgotten items on orders, wrong orders and just cold terrible food. The last straw was tonight, in our close to $40 order, we did not receive eggs we ordered, we specifically set a time of 5:00PM for pickup and got there 10 minutes early to find the food already done... and cold. It was terrible, overcooked and greasy bacon, cold bland burger and missing and order of eggs. I called to let them know that items were missing and was basically told it was the cook staffs fault. Well I did this morning and didn't regret it! Granted, the characters in the diner at that time are quite interesting! The food here at Jake's Diner is spot on for diner food! My two soft scrambled eggs were just that...soft! My sausage links were tasty and a little spicy! The biscuit and gravy were good, with the biscuit being the better of the two! Jake's has been in this location forever it seems, well as long as W. Wendover's been around. It's a 24-7 style diner with a drive thru (kinda cool), and usually a full parking lot. It has had some interesting happenings over the years, as all nite eateries seem to, especially in the over night hours - even got hit by a car about a year ago. The restaurant is owned by the Blythe family (2nd generation), which owned Jan's House on W. Market for many years, so there is diner gravitas here. They serve breakfast anytime, and the breakfast menu is diner typical, and the pricing is very reasonable. They offer burgers, hot dogs, the usually sandwiches, salads (including a great Grilled Chicken Salad), steaks & chops, a few standard plates, a daily Blue Plate Special, and Fish Fry Friday. The Blue Plate Special on Tuesday is Country Fried Steak (aka Chicken Fried Steak in Tejas), so off we went, because you can never get too much country fried steak. The place was busy for 11 AM - 80% of the booths taken, 8 or 10 at the counter, and even a few eating outside. Alice went with the Country Fried Steak with White Gravy, Mashed Potatoes, and Pintos, with a Corn Muffin kicker. I went with a breakfast order - two eggs over medium, grits, Liver Mush, biscuit, and a side of Hash Browns. The foods was out fairly quickly, not a bad feat considering the customer pressure - these folks move some serious food. The Country Fried Steak is exceptional, super, outstanding - the very best in this area in my considered opinion, and the white gravy is "real and spectacular". The meat is of a very nice quality, nicely breaded, and well cooked to a nice outside crust - never underestimate the value of an outside crust, whether on steak, hamburger, pork BBQ (bark or outside brown), fried chicken, fried seafood, or home fried potatoes, and much more. The canned pintos were very well seasoned, while the potatoes were a bit of a flop - the veggies here are not there strong suit. The corn muffin had some sweetness, and some dryness - an item easily passed by on the next visit. The biscuit is excellent - very well sized, loaded with flavor, and just the right density - throw some Smucker's Grape Jelly or some honey on that sucker, and you got dessert. The breakfast meal was quite nice - the eggs cooked to order, the grits tasty if a bit watery, the liver mush was as it should be with a nice crust on the outside (there we go again), and the hash browns were the shredded, frozen kind, but were excellent in taste, and a nice portion - perhaps the best hash browns of this genre I've found. This place is what it is, a 24/7 diner that serves breakfast the entire time they're open, and they're always open - seems simple enough, but in a world were so many people look for new & inventive ways to be offended (horrors!), that point should be made, and understood. This is not a place for those with food concerns (real or imagined), or those who want to "eat healthy", or those who are looking for the new, the creative, the buzz of the week, or those who think tofu is a super food. Research the restaurants you choose, it reduces ignorance and disappointment - well, ignorance only so much. The diner food here is more than solid, the wait process is generally good, but subject to lapses (the girl, she does get weary). The place is loud, really loud, middle school cafeteria loud - perhaps the loudest restaurant in the area without boom box piped in music (think Rody's). There is nothing soft and absorbent in the building, the noisy bounces around, and shirt tails. The food was awful, and it had to be sent back to the kitchen twice because it was not cooked right. The wrong food came out both times. The cooks were even giving the server a hard time. We felt sorry for her, and we left her a tip. We just had to go and get food from somewhere else. read more
