On this #ThankYouThursday, I'm kicking my thanks the way of a place that has gone relatively unchanged for several decades, and is still making tasty food the way I remember all for a fair price. The Rainbow Family Restaurant. Located in front of the shell that used to be the "Westchester Mall" that I think has been repurposed a time or two, it lives on as the only original structure I can remember. Walking into the Rainbow now at dinner time, I have to be honest, I lowered the median age in there significantly. There were lots of elderly couples or older parents having a meal with their adult kids and maybe their grandkids, and that is totally fine! The service was friendly, food was served piping hot and timely, and all was right in the world. They have a wide menu, and it's definitely a "Jack of all trades" kind of place. There is one big gem though, that I feel everyone needs to know about. The open-faced meatball sub. I remembered getting this as a kid a few times, and loving how saucy, messy, and cheesy it was. It's a pretty simple concept but I've never seen it anywhere else. A meatball sub served open face, covered in marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese, and then baked. It comes out on a fajita skillet in a pool of sauce, and is served with a side. I opted for hot chips and ranch. It was such good comfort food. Cutting off slices of bread and meatball and rolling them around in the melty cheese was satisfying and delicious. The sauce is a little on the sweeter side as far as marinara goes, but, it went really well with all the other flavors. As a bonus, my hot chips were crispy and perfect, and the ranch was some of the best I've had lately. My meal was served with my ticket, but the great service refilling my tea was always prompt and cheery. When you're ready to go, just pay at the counter. I was pleasantly surprised that this place has stood the test of time, and now it is going to be far less time between visits for me... even if it is a little bit of a hike across High Point. read more

I had to run out to High Point, so as I was driving by decided to try The Rainbow Family Restaurant. I was extremely surprised to read the hours on the door that stated closed on Saturday and Sunday. Isn't that when most 'families' go out to eat?! Anyway, as I walked in, I was greeted promptly by the hostess and seated. The restaurant seemed clean. The waitress promptly asked what I'd like to drink, and gave me a minute with the menu. She wasn't really friendly, but efficient, and cordial. The food came out very quickly, I was about 1/2 thru my salad when the entree arrived. Had I known there was no cheese on the salad, I would have requested some. The manicotti was sort of bland, like the marinara came out of a jar. ( I've had lean cuisine that had better flavor) other than that it was ok. As I was sitting there, the waitress started taking an order from the table in front of me. I think they were regulars, as there was friendly banter. I felt better about it at that point, thinking maybe she was just extremely busy. I asked if I could have an iced tea to go, she happily got one for me. They have a Kids Menu & a Senior Citizens Menu with specials, We had Country Style Steak with mashed potatoes & gravy, and Fried Okra. Also ordered Chicken Livers, Fried Squash, and Pinto Beans. Corn Bread with one, roll with the other. Priced at $7.95. Steak was fall apart tender, with rich, flavorful gravy. The okra was excellent, crispy with real okra taste. Potatoes were a little bland, but were excellent after salt & pepper did its magic. The Chicken Livers were done perfectly, nice crust, but moist & tender. The pintos were loaded with flavor, enhanced even more with a little raw onion and crumbled corn bread. The fried squash was too heavily breaded for my taste. Corn Bread & roll were nice. Not too many places can pull off the wide variety items that this place can. The portions are nice, the pricing reasonable, the service excellent. You will have a hard time choosing between the Greek, Italian, Southern dishes, or the salads, or the sandwiches, and more. We did not partake, but the cakes on display were wicked looking. There's a reason Rainbow has been in business over 20 yrs. They do not over salt their food, which i appreciate. They have a huge variety and generous portions. The senior menu is the perfect portion for my elderly mother. Their wait staff is professional and fast and many of them have been there for a number of years. The food comes quickly and hot. My personal favorite is the baked chicken with rice which comes with 2 or 3 sides. Their dressings are home made and the 1000 Island is my favorite. Cucumber salad, steamed cabbage, Lima beans, are all excellent. Their fried fish and shrimp are wonderful. The baked spaghetti is plenty for two people but you may want some to take home. The grilled chicken salad is hard to resist as it is loaded with vegetables and the chicken has been marinated so it's extra good. If it sounds like I've tried everything on the menu, it's because I've been eating there for more than 20 yrs. In our fast food drive thru world that we all live in a family can still sit down , order a real dinner , meat, 2or 3 veggies or dessert, bread & a drink for 8$ . If you have extra time try the Greek chicken, its fantastic lemony with greek seasoning . i have been coming to rainbow family restaurant for years and enjoying the food and the service from some of the wait staff. i recently came to rainbow with my daughter and rita was our waitress, we originally asked for kim but was told it was her day off, so we were given rita. now again, i've been coming for years, so i know the waitresses and the owners pretty well. with that being said, i would return if i never saw rita again. this woman who has been employed for many years by this family, stood there and belittled the very ones that employer her despite her personality and her rudeness (at times) i was embarrassed by some of the things that she was saying about the owners and their son and his wife. let me quote some of the things she said. she first complained about the "little girls" that were seating people. and i quote "carol highers these little girls who don't know their ass from their elbows, always seating people wrong in the wrong sections". she stated that "andrew and his wife are the reason that they don't have the customers that they used to have". she also stated "once you have stupid people hiring stupid people, then there goes the business" she stated that's why the restaurant is now closed on sundays "they let faye run the place into the ground". she mentioned that she is only supposed to be part-time but because "all of the other little girls that are waitresses just call out whenever they feel like it with a bs excuse and nick and carol fall for it every time and she has to work all the time instead of part time"....i mean i could not believe some of the things that she was saying and it broke my heart and i'm not even an employee there. i have so much respect for the family and their establishment but i will not go in there on days that rita is working. my ears just wouldn't be able to take it and for fear that i might blow my top at her, i'd rather just check with the hostess to see if she is there before asking to be seated. rainbow's family restaurant is a great l spot, with good food, good neighbors and a great staff, despite some people. read more
