But this one was too good not to mention. Packard Tavern is in the former Bar One Lounge space in Uptown Charlotte, inside Historic Packard Place. The building used to be a Packard Motor Car showroom, and they leaned into that history in a really cool way. The space is gorgeous, polished, and full of character without feeling stiff. The service was honestly one of the biggest surprises. For a team that had only been together for about a week, everything felt smooth. We were greeted warmly, the servers were friendly, the pacing was solid, and the whole team seemed ready. We started with the Triple Dip, which came with cauliflower hummus, bourbon onion dip, Red Dragon pimento cheese, and warm toasted pita. The bourbon onion dip was the clear standout. I would put that on fries, steak, roasted potatoes, or probably just eat it with a spoon while pretending I have self-control. The pimento cheese was also great and not too spicy. I passed on the cauliflower hummus because I have childhood cauliflower trauma, but that is a me problem, not a Packard Tavern problem. The Oven Roasted Oysters were also excellent. Since Packard Tavern is a sister restaurant of Sea Level, they use Sea Level Salts oysters. They were roasted with vegan chorizo, parmesan, pico, and charred lime. I wondered why vegan chorizo was used on seafood, but it worked. It was flavorful without being greasy, and the pico added a nice fresh bite. Even if you are not a big oyster person, I'd suggest trying one. The Tavern Caesar was simple and well done, with romaine, parmesan, Caesar dressing, and focaccia croutons. It was enough for two people to share as a side salad. For entrees, we shared the Carbonara and the DemKota Ribeye. The Carbonara was classic, focused, and exactly what I wanted it to be. The spaghetti was cooked al dente, the guanciale was balanced, and they shaved pecorino romano tableside until I said when. I respect any restaurant that gives me cheese control. The DemKota Ribeye was cooked to the requested medium temperature and had great flavor. The steak was well seasoned and served with demi glace, fried Brussels, and roasted potatoes. The ribeye had a great texture, and most of the fat was rendered well, which is always appreciated. The Brussels were crispy, seasoned well, and soft in the center. Brussels can go very wrong. These did not. We also had the house fries, which are round crinkle-cut potato coins served with garlic aioli. These are dangerous. You think you are going to have a few, and then your hand keeps going back like it has been possessed by a potato demon. For drinks, I ordered my usual Diet Coke with grenadine, also known as "The Evan Diamond." The server told me there is actually a button in their POS system called "The Evan," and I was both flattered and honored. Move over Shirley Temple and Roy Rogers. There is a new non-alcoholic beverage icon in town. For dessert, I tried the Peanut Butter Pie, which came in a skillet and was rich, sweet, and very good. A few bites were enough to satisfy my sweet tooth. My dining partner ordered the Chocolate Torte with raspberry sauce and house-made vanilla whipped cream, and that was also excellent. Do not skip the restrooms. I know that sounds weird, but each one has its own theme and story. They are worth checking out. There is also a private dining area with a full bar that would be great for a company dinner or private event.
