Admittedly, a lot of dog training is human training, so the learning burden is really on the dog parents, but I do believe my pups have gained quite a few skills over the past few months! Sara is patient, kind, talented, and incredibly knowledgable. After searching for top rated trainers in the area and interviewing a couple, we decided to go with Sara at Smiles Dog Training for a few reasons: she offers science-based training, utilizes non-fear tactics, and employs a hybrid online and in-person teaching method that worked well for our schedule. Most other top trainers seem to employ fear-based tactics for training, and shock collars are prominent elsewhere. Sara does not believe in these negative reinforcement strategies, and this is the main reason we chose her! Results are achievable without them, and everyone is happier with positive reinforcement! The online written and video material in the training program is high caliber. It's accessible on a computer or smart phone/tablet, and is paired with weekly zoom coaching calls to review, answer questions, work through emergent scenarios, and practice hands-on skills. The 6-month training program offers a handful of in-person lessons as well, to further broaden and strengthen everyone's skills. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!! Tom came for a first visit and he…read moremade a good canned presentation. We accepted his pitch and believed he would follow it up in a professional manner. That was not a reasonable assumption. First "Training" Session - As others have noted, he basically consulted on the need for us to go out to purchase recommended snacks, enclosure, leash / collar, water spray bottles, etc. We followed all recommendations. Second "Training" Session - More of the same and about 45 minutes on the treadmill. Our puppy is a Boston Terrier and is approximately 15 lbs. Tom was flipping her through air with harsh tugs on the leash. That prompted me to yell at him to "stop yanking her by her esophagus"! This past week, she has reacted oddly when either of us even touches her collar. Related? We are not qualified to say but we certainly do question. Third "Training" Session today - As I requested in person and in the following text I sent him one week ago, I asked him to provide a list of what would be accomplished in upcoming sessions. Tom was adament that he would tell me what he would cover but HE WAS UNWILLING TO LIST ANYTHING IN WRITING. He expected $2,700.00 for training but refused to put in writing what he was going to do for that very material amount. That is his way of claiming we misunderstood what was in our notes, that he never committed to whatever we took issue with. This is common for people with a history of unsatisfied clients. Text sent to Tom on Thursday, April 23rd: Tom: Thank you for the copy (of the Waiver we signed but did not receive a copy of until we followed up). We will let you know if the training will continue with both of us or just me. Your condescending manner toward my wife, a high functioning business executive, caused her discomfort and was unnecessarily stressful. It will be her decision to participate or not. Additionally, please list the scope of the upcoming sessions so that I can manage my expectations accordingly. As you know, house-training was my #1 priority and it received a very uncreative approach and no training, just tips for us to incorporate. This adorable male Shepherd was already a sweetheart loved by all, but he had a few bad manners. In the initial session Anton and I discussed the key behaviors I wanted to be addressed, pulling on the leash while walking, and my dogs barking reaction to strangers in the home. Not only have these behaviors been addressed but also so much more than I asked for, I have a much better relationship with my furry friend than ever before. I get so many great compliments about Lestat's behavior while we are in public, at restaurants, and at the dog park. When strangers are invited into the home now, Lestat will lay quietly in his SPOT until released. I love that Anton explains the why behind each skill learned.
