HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!! Tom came for a first visit and he made a good canned presentation. We accepted his pitch and believed he would follow it up in a professional manner. That was not a reasonable assumption. First "Training" Session - As others have noted, he basically consulted on the need for us to go out to purchase recommended snacks, enclosure, leash / collar, water spray bottles, etc. We followed all recommendations. Second "Training" Session - More of the same and about 45 minutes on the treadmill. Our puppy is a Boston Terrier and is approximately 15 lbs. Tom was flipping her through air with harsh tugs on the leash. That prompted me to yell at him to "stop yanking her by her esophagus"! This past week, she has reacted oddly when either of us even touches her collar. Related? We are not qualified to say but we certainly do question. Third "Training" Session today - As I requested in person and in the following text I sent him one week ago, I asked him to provide a list of what would be accomplished in upcoming sessions. Tom was adament that he would tell me what he would cover but HE WAS UNWILLING TO LIST ANYTHING IN WRITING. He expected $2,700.00 for training but refused to put in writing what he was going to do for that very material amount. That is his way of claiming we misunderstood what was in our notes, that he never committed to whatever we took issue with. This is common for people with a history of unsatisfied clients. Text sent to Tom on Thursday, April 23rd: Tom: Thank you for the copy (of the Waiver we signed but did not receive a copy of until we followed up). We will let you know if the training will continue with both of us or just me. Your condescending manner toward my wife, a high functioning business executive, caused her discomfort and was unnecessarily stressful. It will be her decision to participate or not. Additionally, please list the scope of the upcoming sessions so that I can manage my expectations accordingly. As you know, house-training was my #1 priority and it received a very uncreative approach and no training, just tips for us to incorporate. He was an asshole to me and my husband almost treating us like dogs needing to be trained. He spent most of the time that he was here telling us what kind of things we needed to buy and rapidly saying things we needed to do for training, without having time to write them down, with no option to record it, no training paperwork. Ever wonder why all his reviews on thumbtack are on how he responds quickly, and on youtube how all his videos are dogs on treadmills and nothing else? and why there are multiple business profiles of him on Google all with different star rating? Well let me tell you... I got a dog while working from home and had 90 days before my job changed to possibly going back in the office, to work on separation anxiety issues and my dog being comfortable in the kennel. Tom with k9katelynn is a complete and udder scammer. He states initial visit is free of charge but than charges you $75 for his "car" maintenance. So technically first visit is not free. After talking to him about our training needs at the initial visit which were for separation anxiety, kennel training, and 3 commands we decided to move forward at $250 a visit for 6 visits, and I had a 90 day deadline to get the separation issue and kennel issue under control, Tom stated I will be good to go at the end of the 90 days. Now we signed a form stating we agreed to his services and after requesting a copy of this form multiple times, I never did receive a copy. Which should have been a red flag to me, but this is dog training so I didn't think to much of it. Now our first visit after we hired him Tom shows up and wasted the WHOLE hour reading off a list of EXTRA items we need to purchase, such as collar, leash, treats, toys, etc. This list should have been emailed to me and or handed to me after we hired him. Not waste $250 to tell me what I need to buy. At this visit I informed Tom we got a treadmill ( Tom is BIG BIG BIG on exercising your do on a treadmill, he seems to think this will solve a majority of my separation issue and kennel issue) and he told me to make sure prior to our next visit (2 weeks later) that my dog is comfortable sitting and laying on the treadmill. Visit #2 Tom shows up to do the treadmill training, now mind you, I already got my dog comfortable getting onto the treadmill and laying down or just standing there, Tom precedes to turn the treadmill on and choke drag my dog onto it while it is running, instead of having my dog step on the treadmill which he is already comfortable with and than turn it on, so this was upsetting to me. Mentioned to Tom at this visit that my dog is still not doing well with the kennel training and is actually getting worse, and Toms recommendation was exercise him on the treadmill daily and tire him out more and leave him in the kennel for longer periods. Visit #3 Tom shows up and we tell him my dog is not really enjoying the treadmill, he is really lagging and trying to get off alot, Tom responds to continue daily and increase the time and speed and he will fall in line, I mention again the kennel issue getting worse and again im told to exercise him and leave in longer. I explain to him I am walking him 2 miles around the neighborhood, than running errands with him, than treadmill for 2 miles and still now happy in the kennel, he still states to leave in longer and with the biting of the kennel my dog is doing to just put a piece of acrylic plastic around the kennel so he cant bite at it... EXCUSE me how is this correcting this behavior??? it is only masking the issue! Than he chooses to train us on how to walk my dog, when we never asked for training on this because we don't have an issue with walking on a leash, so this visit being $250 again and not anything I asked for help on, fast forward to visit #4 where he chooses again to ignore my issues with the kennel and separation anxiety, and still insists the treadmill and exercise and leaving him in the kennel longer will work, regardless of how much exercise and time in the kennel he spends, he just is never settling and Tom doesn't seem to care or know what to do in this instance. So, we move to working on the "place" command where he gets the bright idea to use a towel, as the placement on our wood floor, and states that anytime a paw is of the placement we have to start the place command all over again. Well every time you move or walk on the towel the towel moves and gets scrunched up, so when at one time the dog did have all 4 paws on the towel, anytime there is movement he gets a paw off, so this is all just confusing to the dog because he doesn't understand the moving towel under him. After these multiple visits of him ignoring my 2 MAIN issues and not addressing other matters to fix them I chose it was best to part ways, after requesting a refund from him for the 2 wasted visits and the 2 visits I haven't used he is refusing to give them to me because I won't discuss the matter over the phone and I want everything in writing. you can see proof below of this. She had a lot of traits that made it hard to take her around other dogs ( barking, lunging, pulling ect) Tom had helpful tips to address these behaviors. You do need to follow his training recommendations and train your dog twice a day to see the best results. While it is an ongoing effort we have seen big improvements in her behavior. We appreciated all the help Tom gave us with our chocolate lab 10 month old puppy. He foresaw problems we might have with her that we had not considered. At first we wanted to work on her separation anxiety, but he showed us how we needed to train her walking on a loose lease and heeling first. We are older with a very sweet but a strong 75 pound dog, and feel very confident walking her anywhere now! She is a delight to take for a walk now and does not pull! This was the most expensive dog training we had and totally regretted every bit of it. We tried to give Tom a chance and see how he could better train my boyfriend and I's dog AND my boyfriend's parents' dog together and every session was more about taking notes than actually training the dogs. One visit was literally only training the dogs for 10 mins. We understand that you have to train the owners but I've never had training like this before i.e. it doesn't work and is a waste of time. He's also a very impersonal person, talks really fast (after asking him to repeat it, he says it just as fast again), WON'T remember your names (which is ridiculous because you're a client paying X amount of money) and can come off very rude during training. After canceling our training and nicely explained why, Tom never responded. If anyone owns a business and was explained why their services were being canceled, I would think anyone would want to thank the client or apologize. We got neither. We hired K9Katelynn to help our pandemic pup through fear-based reactivity and anxiety. Our dog, Moose is very smart and knows the general commands, but when he was in moments of high anxiety it was impossible to get his attention to listen. K9Katelynn did an initial assessment and we set up six sessions to solidify the fundamentals and increase confidence to reduce reactivity. In the six sessions, Moose now walks beautifully on a leash, lays down during reactive triggers, and has greatly reduced any food based possession. We can't thank you enough for helping us and Moose. So I put a lot of thought into whether or not I should write this review only because I hate complaining and typically just let things go. That is the reason for my late review posting. However, I felt inclined to fully do my research this morning on K9Katelynn because something wasn't sitting right with me STILL. I went onto Thumbtack where I initially found this company for a dog trainer and looked at all the lowest rated reviews. Boy did I relate to all of them. First red flag that I explained to my husband and mother in law as to why I had a bad feeling about this company is that Tom had me write a good review on his prompt reply...why? As a business owner and someone in the service industry shouldn't being prompt to respond already be something exceptional and expected without thanks before a service was already provided? I caved and gave a good review on his promptness which I felt weird about because he sent me like 4 links to give good reviews before I even met this person in real life. The second red flag for me was the attitude, demeanor and rudeness of this man. He did not greet me when I walked in the door. He sat on the couch with my husband as I walked in and did not make eye contact, did not say hello, did not introduce himself and furthermore asked a series of questions off a printed questionnaire that I could've answered online. This costed us $35. The third red flag was that he was abrasive and I couldn't understand a word he was saying. He spoke very mumbled and in times of Covid did not wear a mask or ask if he should wear a mask. He sounded very congested and muffled. I would ask anyone that comes to any of his review pages to do their due diligence to read the 1 star reviews of this company. The reason he has people review his services before he even provides a service is to overshadow the real 1 star reviews of real customers. The other funny thing I saw while reading these 1 star reviews is that the people that have either worked with him or had a consultation with him provided screenshots of the conversation and his reply was always "I have never talked to this person" or something along the lines of calling these people liars and defending himself. Which is clearly a lie on his part with provided proof of conversation. I am sure he will rudely reply to this review as well, which hopefully will show the next victim they cannot trust this person. I knew we found the right dog trainer after this interaction by just a phone consultation I had with another trainer. It was day and night difference on tone and professionalism with the other dog trainer I spoke to. I am so happy we decided not to go with K9Katelynn I knew my gut was right when he left our home and I did let my friends and family members looking for dog trainers know that the owner of this company is rude, tried to push us to a $2,800 package and kept asking "so do you want to do it" over and over until my husband told him we would get back to him. We never did get back to him regarding services because we felt as though he was somewhat intimidating and bullying. Please please please do your research before either hiring this man or scheduling for a consultation. We adopted a neglected/abused 9 month old Labradoodle. This poor guy had no confidence and was not socialized. We needed help training him. Tom (K-9Katelynn) is an experienced trainer and has a good understanding of canine behavior. We took notes each of the six training sessions and keep them as a reminder. We continue to practice with Louie (our dog). In the beginning 65 lb. Louie would not walk on a leash. We had to carry him to his first vet visit. My little guy is getting the help he needs, just not from K9Katelynn. Todd came to my house twice to tell me about toys and equipment to buy but didn't interact with my dog nor did he have me interact with my dog. I was clear with both K9Katelynn and Waggin' Train about what we needed but only Waggin' Train delivered. A 10 min phone call from Waggin'Train gave me more help than 2 home visits from Todd of K9Katelynn. My dog is terrified of people. In a 1 hr home visit from Waggin'Train the trainer was able to pet my dog and get him to walk with her on leash. More importantly, the trainer was able to ge my dog to walk on leash with a friend of mine, pet my dog, and come to him to lay down by him without barking or struggling. This is HUGE for my dog. We will be doing some training at the dog park with Waggin'Train so my dog will be able to play with the other dogs and not have to worry about the people there. This is something K9Katelynn refused to do, ever! Waggin'Train knows exactly what to do to calm both owner and dog and get them/us the help we need so the dog can be a more happy relaxed, well adjusted pet and the owner can relax and enjoy not the pet and their time together with other people and dogs. What can I say here. We employed Thomas to provide some 'fine tuning' to our three dogs. We paid paid him $1400. Thomas is extremely inflexible with his teaching, rhetoric and schedule. After a few sessions, we have decided to part ways. He is very quick to point out that his contract has a single line in there about no refunds. We recently rescued a 3 year old miniature poodle who was abused and abandoned. Very shy and timid but so so precious and adorable, we needed a little guidance on how to introduce her to "dog basics" that she has never experienced such as a simple walk on a leash. Tom, K9Katelynn worked wonders in just a short period of time. Tom visited every week for 8 weeks, always arrived punctual and ready to go. After the first visit we were able to hit the streets for 2 walks a day and wow what a happy little girl. Each week a new command/activity is introduced building on the previous training session and our homework is to continue what we've trained on with Tom. He does a nice job of demonstrating, observing and guiding through each command. Our sessions have concluded and we still work on the teachings of Tom. I went into this training with my rescue dog (whom I've had for 3years) who's had severe anxiety issues from a rough early life hoping for just some basic behavioral modifications after all my routes/attempts have failed. Tom has exceeded all my expectations and has helped us reach milestones we weren't sure we'd ever reach! She's much more social, happy and when her anxiety rears, we both have better tactics on how to deal with those moments and how to move past. I highly recommend his services to anyone, even if your dog isn't having anxiety, behavioral disorder problems. I would leave no stars if possible. I agree with all the negative that was written. I am sorry I only saw positive reviews when I was searching. He is very expensive and just raves to you all the time how great he is. He never works with the dog but always ready to yell at you for what you are doing wrong. It would be helpful if he actually showed you what to do instead of making you write it down. He spends most of the sessions having you write everything down. All I heard is you aren't writing that, wouldn't continue until he thinks you wrote everything word for word. He treats you like you don't have a brain talks to you like you are 2 years old. He suggested you spend a fortune on things that are not necessary and only wants you to buy an expensive treadmill for your dog. This was the worst dog trainer I have ever encountered.
