Views we're great... greens were in bad shape. Must be some type of disease eating the greens up. They were also punched on some holes. Another odd thing that bothers me is when random people are just walking around the greens that aren't even playing. We played Maui Nui and had more fun there for a fraction of the price also Pukalani has great views and plays very well for $45 . When I pay these prices I want Palm Springs course conditions. Pros - close to hotels on Ka'anapali, great views. Course in pretty good shape. Cons - practice facility is mats and a tiny bucket of comp balls. Unfortunately, unlike other courses charging this much there is no water included - and you won't see the cart girl very often - wanted a turkey sandwich at lunch and cart girl said it would be 1.5 hours before she could get us one - told us they don't give her much food (at lunch?!) and there were "100 people ahead of us." Bottom line - pretty expensive - for the same price if you can go to Wailea Emerald or Gold course or Kapalua Bay Course - which are outstanding. read more

So disappointed! 1 star for the maintenance crew as the course was in amazing shape! 1 star for the golf cart guys! Greeted me at 5:45am, set me up in a cart and directed me to pro shop! -25 stars for range ball guy, -50 stars for morning pro shop staff (2 ladies) and -100 stars for the starter! This was for Tuesday 8/20/19. Let's start with the range ball guy; 1st tee time is 6:33am, pro shop opens at 6am but range ball guy doesn't give out range balls until 6:15! At least 10 golfers were ready to hit range balls but no range ball guy! Came up to pro shop at 5:50am but pro shop door was locked - expected as it opens at 6am. However, saw 2 ladies inside, they looked up then looked back down - no acknowledgement, no courtesy to come to the door and say "hello, we'll be open in a couple of minutes". When 1 of them did come to open at 6, she just unlock the door and just walked away even though I was standing right outside the door! And they know I've been waiting! So unprofessional! You would think this would be bad enough? Nope, the worst is still to come! I was told the day before when I booked my tee time, I would have a "good" chance to get out first as a single, ahead of the 1st official tee time. When I met up with the starter and say I was ready to go, she was absolutely inflexible and say "NO SINGLES"! If this is such a strict policy, why didn't the pro shop tell me so when I booked the day before?!! So, I get there at 5:45am, wait exactly until 6am when the pro shop opens, pay my money to only have to wait until 6:33am to get group into a threesome!!! Complete failed! The topping on the cake was when they realized I'm a Kama'aina, they treated me even worst! The starter even tried to deny me range balls! One of the golf cart guys came to my rescue and gave me a range ball ticket! These guys were there before 6am and tried their best to treat me as nice as possible! Everyone else needs some serious re-training! Or get out of the customer service industry! 1 more to finish! So, our threesome is let out at exactly 6:33am! I thought about asking the twosome to let me go ahead after a couple of holes but they were such super-nice guys, I decided it would be rude. Now, these guys admittedly say they play maybe 5 times a year so I planned on a long round! But, again, super-nice guys and they just kept hitting without fooling around/pouting so we did move pretty good! Here's the problem; around the 5th hole, I see a twosome behind us! What's this? What moron starter would send a twosome behind a threesome? More likely, the twosome broke off from a foursome. While not 100% the starter's fault, a good starter should have anticipate this and know resort golfers are generally inexperienced/slower than normal and that groups will break off. Therefore, she should have let me go as a single and therefore, when groups break off, you won't get a twosome behind a threesome or a foursome. The twosome was behind us since the 7th hole which made things a little uncomfortable, at times Overall, I had planned to play both courses but after this experience, I'm not going to play the Kai and will likely NEVER play this stupid golf course ever again! read more

Not sure how they treat 'real' guests but I bought 2 rounds of golf at charity gala on an Sept. The certificate said it was good for 2 rounds of golf for either course but mot during 'blackout' dates. Tums out this is Oct through February, so I don't use it that year evem thougjthough I fly to Maui from Oahu im Oct.amd Feb. I am travelling until Aug and so I call about the deadline of one year and am told if I book by October, they will extend a month.I ask about free dates amd whicj course to play. We settle on a date 20-22 Oct and book the Royal course for 11am. the day before my flight, i call to confirm my reservation, yes, booked for the Kai course.why? There was a food and wine festival event scheduled for 200 people a year ago at 500 per person, surely I must understand. when I protest, im told that I can't expect them to accommodate jist 2 people who paid a lower rate than 200 people who planned this 1 yr in advance. I try to explain that I had called precisely because I wamted to know what was a good day and made my travel arrangmemts around that. Felt like I was treated like a peon because I wasn't glamorous enough for them to care. Then, we were told to hurry up and wait for our tee time, which spaced out a bit tight. I would give it a few stars for a nice course. But we got there at 830 am for a 930 tee time. Thinking we could have a nice breakfast and hang out before a 169.00 round. Unfortunately. They have no food service. Then about 20 mins before our tee time. They finally decide to tell us there is a place across the street that may have breakfast. Of course. That doesn't help when you have to tee off in a few. Then they tell us to look for cart girl. She shows up around hole 4. Never saw her again. Never pass the club house. My advice is. Eat good before you go. Bring as much beer and drinks that you want with you. Cause your not gonna get any service. I guess this is kinda normal, because last year at kapalua we had even worse experience. So far to me Hawaiian courses suck on service. If u just want to golf and want no other services. It's a great Course. But for around 2oo a round. Total shit hole. . Pretty shitty service. read more

Ka'anapali Golf is a terrible place to play golf on Maui. I'm a well traveled golfer and play golf all over the world. Unmarshaled slow play combined with even worse customer service is a recipe for a very poor golf experience. For me, it's very tough to get in a rhythm and play well when I'm forced to wait on almost every single shot. I even called the pro shop on the 5th tee box and politely asked for someone to come out and ask the groups in front of us to pick up the pace. An hour went by and no one came out. Very disappointing. Add beat up greens and unkept fairways to the mix really means there's nothing good to find at this place. I don't mind paying $200 for a round of golf. But this place truly isn't worth $40. read more

Played the Kia course for second time. Narrow fairways that often slope so ball rolls into the Bermuda rough. Greens were good. They held and putted smoothly. Sand traps terrible. Could see the liner in many holes. Not worth the money I paid. Was close so played it. Not sure about Royal course. read more

My husband was excited to play this course. I rode along for $35. Based on the green fees we assumed this was a nice course. Once you play Kapalua nothing compares!!! We were quickly disappointed from the moment we paid for the round. They were very nice when collecting their fees. The staff were like robots who were just tired of the tourists. I know they do their best but it's a customer service industry. No instructions on how to get the golf carts or any thing much. This frustration only starts out bad and only gets worse . I quickly noticed my husband get frustrated. We asked for water and was quickly given detailed instructions on where the vending machine was. WHAT??just paid $215 for a round of golf no water . I kept asking my husband are we at a municipal course , are you sure we are at the correct place? I told him to get a refund and RUN. The experience was like a municipal course with a cart lady. I had to call the clubhouse as water jug had run out on hole 14, it was a hot humid day. We had a 5 bag in front of us that was 3 holes behind with no marshal around. I enjoyed the green grass and some nice views. Suggestions: go to Kapalua and see how they run things and take a page from their book. Please provide water bottles . It's not expensive. Provide better instructions so the experience can be enjoyable. Provide customer service training for the team members. Tell them to smile it goes a long way. Where are the marshals?????? It would be nice so we don't take 5 hours for a round of golf . Let's just say we won't be coming back! read more

It's unfortunate such an iconic, expensive golf course felt like a muni course. Early check in complete choas, no food, no coffee, no water on carts, cart girls had no food but snacks. $169 green fee should be $60. They are missing more revenue so besides bad service bad business which is unforgivable as a business person. read more

I've now played this course about a dozen times through the years. When I am on vacation with my family in Maui, we stay at the Westin Resort timeshare Villas. This golf course is in great location to most of the major hotels/resorts in the area and it is one of the main reasons why I play here. On my most recent trip, they had a Columbus Day special and green fees were only $50 including cart. Normally it is roughly $150. The course has a nice layout, some beautiful and picturesque holes, and any skill level will have a great time here. I definitely recommend this course as it is nowhere as stuffy/snobby as Kapalua. read more

Great golf course. We played at 11 and finished around 4. We played slow due to an injured player. The carts were great, screen big and synced well with the course. The weather was perfect! We played the Kai course and had a great time. I played this course 8 years ago and it was not good for the price. Happy to say it is much improved. Holes get better as you move through course. Hole 1 is not impressive but that was only one that stood out. Greens were all in great shape. Practice facility is good but has mats. Putting green very good and large. Like any Maui resort course, you are gonna drop some greens for 18 holes - there's no disputing that. I got in 18 on the Kai course and had the time of my life. This course was beautifully maintained and it helped that I sunk a couple ridiculously long putts and knocked about 12 strokes off my usual ballpark. Best part, we booked a tee time the day prior got the 1st tee time of the day around 730 and had the entire course to ourselves!? Didn't see anyone else out on the course until we were wrapping up, and even then it wasn't packed. Weather was beautiful and not too blazing not for June. Free coffee and a bag tag - the outside service personnel were friendly, terrific hot breakfast sandwiches on the turn. All in all a fantastic experience - you won't find golf courses that empty in Oahu. And the Kama'aina rate offered a HUGE discount! Looking forward to returning to play the Royal! read more

In general, you should skip this course. The good: * Nice views * Course condition is very good. * Convenient location to Kaanapali Resorts. The bad: * Layout is similar to a nice muni. (very boring) * Service is a little below average. * Price is outrageous for the course. In general, if you want to beat the ball around a nice muni course, for $180 to $230 a round, play here. Better courses for less money are easy to find on Maui. Play the Dunes or Wailea Gold instead. Both are much better courses and the prices are $80 and $160 respectively. read more

Played 3 rounds, 3 days in a row on the royal course. Can you believe they dont re cut pins every day? When I brought it up in the shop, the lady kind of laughed at me and said no one has ever complained about that before. Who wants to play the same course with same exact pins two days in a row, let alone the fact the the holes were in terrible shape after 36 hours of being cut, looked like a miniature golf course around the edges. The overall condition was just ok, but not up to par for over 120 per round. Not close to what would be expected. Then theres the range...tiny. Balls are old and low compression because range is short. But they only give you like 15 to 20 to warm up and that's it and always on mats? Not at all what is expected for well over a hundred per round. read more

Had a fantastic time on the Royal course and it is pretty forgiving to the player. The other course is more difficult if you're looking for more challenge in your round. I shot my lowest score ever and loved the day. Staff was friendly and the amenities were great. The range is decent but you are left to hit off the matt with no shade from the blazing sun. Twilight fees are the way to go... saved quite a bit of money and got our round in no problem. read more

We played both the Royal and Kai courses during our stay in early June. Both are nice, with the Royal being a little more challenging. The signature hole is #5 on the Royal course, with a green right on the beach. Many of the holes have great views of the water and other islands. Though the course is designed with the trade winds in mind, the breeze does make the courses more difficult than they look on the card. The greens were in good shape but have a lot of grain and everything goes toward Molokai. Downhill, down grain putts can be very speedy. The terrain keeps it interesting and makes for holes that run up, down and across the slope. The carts have a good GPS system with maps showing distances to bunkers and hazards. The driving range is OK, with mats instead of grass. Greens fees include a small warm up bucket. We made reservations a week ahead and were able to get times around 9:30 on a Thursday and Saturday. The first day, we played as a twosome. The second, we got paired with a couple other visitors. Pace of play was right around 4:30 to 4:45. The courses did not seem overly busy. The staff in the pro shop was nice enough. When we checked in the first day, they offered the "mixed plate" special, which gave us our two rounds at a $30 savings. The only problem at the clubhouse is food and drink. The Roy's restaurant is pricey and does not serve hot dogs and beer to go. The Paradise Grill restaurant across the street looks like it might be an option, but we didn't stop in. All they have at the clubhouse is a soda machine. If you want water or a soda before you tee off, make sure you have some singles. Also, plan ahead as neither course comes back to the clubhouse before the 18th hole. We saw the drink cart at least twice each round. The Kaanapali courses are both fun tracks with outstanding views. Worth the money for a round or two. Four stars for me. read more

Played the Royal Kaanapali course back in '08. It was great to finally play here after passing by the 5th hole tee box so often on the highway. Great views from most holes and it was windy when we played, which my hubby and I joked then that this was a poor man's Kapalua. I struggled because of the wind but it was still fun. The course was well maintained from what I could remember. But, man, that wind was a killer. I'd have give this a 3.75. Hope I could go back soon to confirm. Heh. read more

Oh Yeah, Sweet Place. We played the Kai course, it went over the freeway and up the hill. Great Views at every whole. LOVED it. I don't play many premier courses so this was a treat for sure. Was such a fan I bought two shirts. But I guess things can't be that bad golfing in paradise right? Great spot, I probably shouldn't say this, but we had a group of 5 and the host had enough time between tee times so they let us go as One group. That really made our day. Great Course! It is a well maintained beautiful course. I played in the evening and had a discounted rate for the Kai course. You do not get a free bucket for the range which for the price I think you should. However it is a beautiful course which has some interesting holes. The carts are great and they have very useful gps features. I haven't played other courses on the island but I feel this is a pretty descent one. read more

There are two courses here. The north, or Royal Kaanapali and the south, or Kaanapali Kai. I've never played on the south course, but I can tell you that the north course is great! I thought the course might be in great shape since the Wendy's Championship Skins game was played on the north course last weekend. But because I've played on this course before, it's in the same great shape it always is. I kind of took it for granted, but the person I was paired with was from Winnepeg, Canada, so he was taking several pictures from the course on holes that had ocean views. I started around 1pm (twilight rate) and had no problem finishing in about 4.5 hours. There were a couple of par 3's that were backed up, but all in all a very enjoyable afternoon. The carts are brand new with self setting parking brakes and color GPS. read more

Cheapest round of golf in Maui. Not your local cheap though so make sure you are open to a afternoon tee time is possible. If not, book it anyways it's a great gold course. Tee offs are clean, fairways are soft and no huge divots and the greens are tough! No breaks for me. They slide quick if pointed towards the ocean. People are really nice and the views of relaxing. Many homes on the course especially back 9 which I didn't like but hey all good. The carts are cool they have a screen with the entire course and you don't have to guess the pin range. Super helpful. I played both the Kai and Royal courses while on a recent vacation. I got the first tee time on the Kai course and actually got off by myself. It was awesome. The greens were in great shape and the fairways nice and green. I actually shot a really good game and finished in about 2 1/2 hours. Three days later I played the Royal course and it was a different game. The trade winds were blowing so it took alot of club to get up to the green, and most of the fairways are undulating so that no shot was the same. Still alot of fun, with the greens and fairways in great shape. It was pricey for the two courses but I also played at first light which mad the rounds very quick. I still had time for the beach or whatever my wife had planned. Both of best worlds. The staff was great, even got a ride back to my hotel in a gold cart by one of them. read more

This has to be one of the most expensive crappy public courses I have ever seen. $180 for a round should get you better than a rubber mat and crowded driving range that's only 200 yards and half the range irons only. The saving grace of this course are the stunning views you get on pretty much every hole. But take those away and this is a course a parks and rec department would have created and charge $29 a round. read more

I hosted my entire family last week for the thanksgiving break. Three foursomes. $2400 with club rentals. I own a condo in Kaanapali pretty much right on the course and we spend quite a bit of time on the Island. The cart guys, starter, and marshals on the course were amazing. We were having a great time until the group behind my last group started harassing my daughters. they were calling them names and hitting balls in to their group pretty much the whole round. we were not playing slow. when we finished we were 12 minutes ahead of pace. my girls were quite upset when we returned to the clubhouse. I went up and talked to the asst. golf pro behind the counter at the time and politely let him know what had happened. After I left, one of my guest was in the shop looking at buying some things and overheard the asst. Pro bad mouthing me to his assistant for reporting the incident. his exact words were "I'm sick of these tourists coming over here and complaining about everything. he even called me out by name. My guest was super upset when she heard this and made it a point to let the staff behind the counter know that what he said was totally out of line. She put her merchandise back and walked out. I know a lot of people in Kaanapali, Locals and visitors. I can say for certain that My family and friends will not be back to the golf courses at Kaanapali. read more

I played the royal course today and it was in perfect condition! The views are great and the greens and bunkers were in perfect shape. The cost is well worth it for a morning tee time, it isn't nearly as hot and the winds aren't as high. Staff was really nice and well organized. If you only play one course in Maui, definitely play this one if cost isn't a problem. read more

So here's the deal. It is a beautiful 18 holes, but for what they charge you don't get your money's worth. For reference, I payed a little over $240 for clubs and 18 holes on a weekend at a "discounted resort rate" which I was fine with until standards were not met. First problem: the driving range. For this level of a course at this cost you should not be comped the smallest bucket of balls imaginable. No joke was given 25 maybe 30 balls max to hit and if you want a refill you have to go all the way back to the clubhouse to PAY for more!? Ridiculous. Second problem: the refreshments. If you want to golf early, then you better come stocked with your own picnic or a handful of singles because there is no where to buy a soda or water other than a vending machine by the toilets. Then once out on the course there was only 1 drink cart which made its way to us a grand total of 2 times throughout the whole 18 holes. Thank god we learned quick and stocked up. Like I said the course itself was beautiful and pretty fair, but it's just as much about the experience as it is about the course. Hopefully they will fix this and I will be able to raise my review. read more
