The chicken kabob had herby, smoky seasoning with no real heat, and the chicken was actually tender instead of the dry rubber you usually get. The rice leans sweeter than you'd expect and it works. Bread comes with the plate, puffy and soft, not pita, not naan, it is it's own category. Ask for the mint sauce on the side, it adds freshness and a little kick to the chicken and rice. Was so craving this place and was disappointed on my meal. Came for lunch with co worker after raving about it. We hit the combo appetizers which was over cook but still good. We were invited to a birthday dinner here on a Saturday evening and wow! There were 20 people in our party and the service was spectacular. Everyone got their food at the same time, everyone's needs were met, and they refilled drinks and water quickly. The food was amazing! We got the shrimp plate and my partner got the beef plate. Both plates had a huge amount of food! We all had to get Togo boxes. The hot sauce they provided was so tasty we wanted to bring that home! Everything was delicious and fulfilling and I was surprised on the size of the skewers and pieces of meat and shrimp. They definitely don't skimp out and give a good amount of protein. I enjoyed dipping my meats in this green sauce that was provided on our table--it added a nice spicy kick to my overall meal. The rice was seasoned well, meat was cooked to a perfect medium and wasn't overcooked, chicken wasn't dry, shrimp was great too, and the bread was nice and soft. As for the appetizer, I'm not sure what everything was, but everything on that plate was so good. I'm not a fan of lamb, but the items on the chef's platter were good and didn't have that lamb aroma and taste--I wouldn't even think it was lamb lol. Our first time trying Afghan food! This is definitely a place for the carnivores - there are vegetarian options but there speciality is meat varieties. We ordered - Mango lassi: honestly I like this better than Zareens - Veggie combo: stewed spiced spinach, soft pumpkin with yogurt sauce, and spiced cauliflower (come with white rice). I've never thought to pair yogurt with pumpkin but it was a delicious flavor juxtaposition of tart cream with soft sweet vegetal flavor. The spinach had different spices than the similar Saag from India. The cauliflower was prepared with very sour seasonings - I don't think I could have eaten a whole plate - mantu dumplings: lamb dumplings with vegetables and yogurt. Reminds me of Kazakh dumplings. Huge filling plate though! - Beef kebab with spiced rice: the rice was incredible with a deep flavor (not hot) that was nothing like Ive had before, but the beef had been overcooked so it was quite dry and tough - Pork loin chops with spiced rice: much moister meat but it was a serving the size of my head - we struggled to finish - Rosewater ice cream: delicate and floral, not too lotion-like - Cardamom rice pudding with ginger: so flavorful and not too sweet but we struggled to finish because we were so full We were also served a bread similar in texture to focaccia (not sure if it was complimentary or came with one of our entrees that also all came with rice). Ngl this focaccia was better than anything I've had at a Mediterranean restaurant. It was fluffy, soft, and so FRESH. Overall the servings were HUGE and 3 of us starving girls could barely finish so definitely take your meat loving bottomless pit brothers and sons and dads here! Wow. I was taken by a pleasant surprise with this Kabul! I came with family at the end of the lunch hour. We walked in at 1:30pm, last kitchen order by 1:40pm. It closes for dinner at 2pm. However we were allowed to sit and enjoy our food with full service, which was very nice. Staff was incredibly hospitable and attentive even though the restaurant was considered closed. I tried a bit of everything from other's plates & for myself I ordered the entree of Aushak dumplings. A lovely light dumpling filled with flavorful scallions in a yogurt and meat sauce. Reminded me of a deconstructed mantu which I also love. I tried the lamb and chicken kabobs from my group and was shocked how juicy and flavorful everything was. The meat plates were served with delicious basmati rice & a piece of bread that tastes like a super fluffy focaccia. Restaurant is cute & nice for date night and or family dinners. Oh boy where was I all these years? Can't believe we tried this place for the first time today despite living in Sunnyvale and the South Bay for more than a decade. We dropped in for an impromptu lunch and boy were we impressed. We had the Bulanee Katchalu as an appetizer. It's a flaky turnover stuffed with a delicious soft potato and ground lamb filling. For my South Asian friends - it's basically a Lamb and 'Aaloo' Keema Parantha. For us, it was definitely the show-stopper! Then we had the Mater Challaw - a slow cooked Lamb stew made with peas and served with aromatic Basmati rice and a warm focaccia bread. I gotta do some research here because the South Asian connections with the Hindi language are uncanny. And while Mattar Chawal loosely translates to Rice with Peas in Hindi - the Afghans have taken it to another meat heaven by adding the soft and succulent lamb. It was fantastic! I am definitely coming back to try more items on the menu. The restaurant was classy yet understated, the service was prompt, and Saul, our server, was friendly and patient throughout. The beef was a little tough but the chicken and lamb were both really really good--super flavorful and tender. The rice was delicious and well seasoned. The bread was okay, just a little cold. Tonight was the first night that I had visited theit new location in Sunnyvale. They used to be on El Camino and Sunnyvale and I went there a few times many years ago. Now located in the renovated downtown Sunnyvale this location rocks!! This is the same family that owns Kabul in San Carlos Belmont. Very high-end and I see decorated inside.. from their friendly and attentive staff to their wonderful Afghan cuisine. I ordered the chicken kabobs and they were spectacular. I mean The Afghani food is similar to Persian food but their kabobs are bigger than just wonderfully spiced. I really like this place because of the char on the chicken kabobs. Indeed it was one of the best Middle Eastern food I've had in the bay area. Whoever's in the kitchen knows how to make kebab right. Kudos to them! My salmon kebab was scrumptious. The charcoal-grilled exterior and moist interior proved it was done right. The only complaint was plate didn't come with salad. Service however was problematic. They never checked on us. It was not respectful enough to women which reflected their gender-inequality $@#tty culture. The male staff served water to me the last while my son and I were sitting next to each other waiting for our guests. This staff served water to him first, then poured to the rest of the empty glasses in counter-clockwise until he got to me. You always serve ladies first. I unusually didn't say "thank you." for him to catch my displeasure and couldn't help have "misogynist-jack@#$" loom over my head. He probably sensed my irritating vibe, so in the next round of encounter, he had me order the food first, intentionally. Remember my boy, be a real man, chivalry is not dead, ladies first. We also had some samosas which were delicious, and the chutney they serve has quite some heat to it! Mango Lassi - thick and delicious! It was one of the better mango lassi's I've had and I thoroughly enjoyed the strong mango taste along with the tangy yogurt. It wasn't too sweet. Combination Kabob (lamb and chicken) - the kabobs were juicy and tender. The lamb was pink inside and not gamey at all. Chicken was moist and the char was perfect. For dessert, we had baklava and the rosewater ice cream. Baklava was delicious and flaky, the ice cream had a nice floral (rose) taste to it and wasn't too overpowering. The restaurant was not crowded, although it's large enough to handle many people and parties. We started with the mantu appetizer, but that was disappointing because the dumplings were so buried in sauce. The lamb and salmon mixed kebabs were fabulous, primarily due to the fact that the salmon was so good. Excellent flavor. The lamb was good, but not as tender as I expected it to be. We also had the lamb kabobs (more tender than on my combination plate) and the chicken kabobs which were good. The seasoned rice is very tasty, but we ordered the charbroiled veggies and found them to be incredibly oily. Some of the worst Afghan food we have ever had, and we have had plenty. We usually get Afghan food from our favorite restaurant in Fremont, but tonight we were very busy and decided to try this place as it had good reviews. We ordered takeout of bolani, mantoo and chicken kabob with rice. Bolani looked like a greasy Indian poori, and was about 1/4 the size of what a bolani should be. The taste was also nothing like an authentic bolani. Mantoo tasted gamey as if it was made with lamb. Again, mantoo is made with ground beef and should be delicately spiced and topped with yogurt. This version had an odd topping of carrots and peas. The somewhat decent item was the chicken kabob, but still not as tasty and we are used to. We also got a thin sliver of bread. Afghans are very generous with bread, so this was also strange. It seems this restaurant is not Afghan owned, as the food tasted more Indian. It was a complete waste of money, an experience not to be repeated. read more

The chef's platter included the sambosa, mantu, and pakawra-e-badenjan (eggplant with yogurt and meat). The sambosa and eggplant were probably my favorites from the chef's platter, they were breaded perfectly and were so crispy! If I come back, I'd definitely get the eggplant again as an appetizer. Getting the chef's plate is a great way to try and share all the appetizers if it's your first time here, to see what you'd get next time. Service was fantastic, there was always a waiter around to refill waters or answer any questions. This is a spacious restaurant that fills quickly, a true testament to how good their food is. Lawand (5/5): The chicken was surprisingly quite juicy and I enjoyed the nuttiness of the curry, despite there being no nuts. My bf ordered this and I ended up liking it more than the Korma I ordered. So so delicious when eaten with the bread. This one I'd recommend for the homies with nut allergies for sure. Korma Challan (5/5): the lamb was cooked perfectly and super tender! The curry was also packed with flavors. I loved pairing this with the green sauce/yogurt they gave us as well. I ordered the vegetarian plate, which comes with pumpkin, sauteed spinach, and a sort of stew made with cauliflower. My husband ordered Lawand, chicken breast in a sauce. Both dishes came with rice. I also ordered a side: Buranee Badenjan, eggplant with yogurt and another sauce; it normally comes with lamb, but since I do not eat lamb, I got it without meat. My husband loved the Lawand, and the sauce was good for dipping the soft bread in. My vegetarian plate was okay; the pumpkin was the best, but maybe a little overly sweet. The other two vegetables lacked in flavor. The eggplant, also was a disappointment; despite the two sauces, it didn't have much flavor. I had hoped this would be more like babaganoush. Lawand (chicken breast dish) was excellent, the sauce (onion, garlic and spices) was so addicting.
