We came here after seeing it recommended on social media, especially for their lamb shank -- so of course, that's what we ordered. The portion was huge, so we shared one lamb shank between the two of us. The meat was tender, flavorful, and absolutely delicious -- we ate every last bite. The serving was so big that we were completely stuffed by the end. We're definitely planning to come back here, but next time we'll be prepared to share dishes because the portions are just that generous. Four succulent pieces of grilled lamb chops. My friend is a vegetarian so he had the Paneer Tikki Gold Combo. Four chunks of cheese with grilled vegetables. All Gold Combos come with rice, salad, lentil soup and fresh baked naan from the tandoor. Everything was so colourful and delicious. The naan was so huge! Saw that people were constantly coming and going and therefore had to try. We came for dinner and had the veal kabob gold with lentil soup, salad, rice, Naan for $19.99 and fish silver with just salad and Naan $13.99. They also have a lunch buffet that is $22 on weekdays and $25 on weekends. The buffet options look really good as well. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. It tasted homey and was flavourful with generous portions. I thought that the protein mains were very well seasoned but the sides are what made everything even better. The rice had a slightly sweet ?cardamon aroma to it. Bread was freshly made. Yoghurt sauce went great with everything. We also had the mango lassi $6.99 that was full of fresh mango flavour. The place is clearly popular and the casual environment is bustling with groups of friends and family. After being seated you order at the counter, the food is then brought to you. This is not, a "fine dining" restaurant as per the label on their front door. Food is ordered at the counter, the portions are large, and the menu itself is fairly extensive catering for diverse tastes. The food itself is a bit spicier than other Afghan places, and features a bit of a mix of Afghan, Pakistani and Indian food. It has the vibe of a sober dive bar - lively music playing in the background, prices suitable for students (given it's proximity to TMU) and the quick, efficient service (without overheads of waiting services). We had the Kabul rice, sweet, almost could be a dessert, but worked well with spicy food and definitely something different; the silver Sultani kebab combo, there are better kebabs, but good value for money; and the lamb shank - stunning sauce, really soft falling of the bone and the highlight of the meal. There are classier Afghan places, there are certainly better kebab places, but the lamb shank, with a side of the Kabul rice, may be the reason to come back. read more

We were a group of 11 that walked in as their 1st customers for lunch time. Birthday boy chose this place from work. It did not disappoint. My lamb chop was juicy. I added both the tzatziki sauce and a light hot sauce to the lamb chop which worked well together. The naan bread was hot and fresh, also dipped it in both sauces. I ate the whole combo. 3 lamb chops with salad and fresh naan. My plate was the first to come out, but the 11th plate didn't take that much longer to serve, so more points for the cook. This is bar none, the best Afghani grill in the city. Authentic, and super generous portions of well marinated kebabs. They also serve butter chicken and biryani, as well as Karahi. The food here is delicious, and the gentlemen who own the restaurant are always very friendly and hospitable. And the prices are super affordable. This place takes the cake for all Afghan and Indian cuisine restaurants that I have tried throughout Toronto and the GTA. I find that their flavours are great and well marinated. Portions are very large here and the service is exceptionally great. Please do not be afraid to wait 20 minutes because it's well worth it, everything is cooked to order. I was randomly craving butter chicken the other day and had noticed Kabul Express every time I was waiting for the streetcar so decided to order some butter chicken for lunch. I was not disappointed. It took around 10 minutes, I ordered butter chicken (decided not to get the meal) and some naan. It came with a small salad vegetable dish with some pickles and cucumbers and onions, ranch and some spicy hot sauce. The butter chicken was delicious, so incredibly tasty and with just the right amount of spice and creaminess. I prefer naan that's soft rather than crispy and the naan here was amazingly soft and bready and just perfect. The staff was super nice on the phone when I was ordering and my order was ready to go by the time I arrived! When I came in, there were a lot of customers for lunch. they have a wide selection of items and I chose the beef kafka which comes with salad, a pita and a few beef chunks. for some reason, it takes them like 20 minutes to get my order which is too long in my opinion because a lot of people need to head back to the office. they also give you two dipping sauces. one spicy and one looks like cream cheese. Came here a few weeks ago because it was 10:45pm and I was caught in a hunger pinch. I was here before over 2 years ago and not particularly inspired to come back, but faced with diminishing late night options I figured what the heck. The place looks much better than a couple of years ago and the service was on par for this type of joint, I probably should have tried the Tandoori or Lamb this time around but I guess I was really tired & hungry and took the Kebab even though I didn't like it the previous time (and to be honest I never really enjoyed it at the two other Afghan joints I've been to...) Once again I found it pretty dry and bland (being around since the 1970's I was having flashbacks of GOOD TIMES and JJ's jokes about Thelma's cooking...) Not say it was bad, just merely acceptable. I also should have thought of asking to substitute the rice for extra Naan as another Yelper cleverly did - there is no food situaion which can't be improved by more Naan - my mistake there. I'll give it 3 stars just because at the end of the day I respect how they cater to needs of late night eaters with honest, made-from-scratch foods in good portions for a very fair price. I don't recall exactly what I paid but it was very reasonable for the amount of food and considering the real estate they rent - however despite the value I somewhat regret the purchase. read more

Kabul Express is always rammed, and the first time I tried to go, there was a 35 minute wait for food, so I decided I'd come back another time. Am I ever glad I did! I got to meet the owner. He's an ignorant, insensitive, inconsiderate misogynist, and I wouldn't even dream of ever supporting his business. Since it was my first visit, and I am vegan, I spent a great deal of time looking over the menu to consider my options. I decided on one of the daals. Unlike all of their other menu items, the vegetarian items are all a la carte, and are not available as a combo that includes rice, salad or bread, and I was informed that those had to be ordered separately, the cost of which would have exceeded any of their combos featuring animal flesh. I casually commented, "Oh, that's a shame." He responded angrily, "What did you just say?!? This is my business, I can do whatever I want with my menu, and I don't appreciate that!" I thought maybe he misinterpreted my use of the word shame, and tried to give him the benefit of the doubt. I attempted to clarify, "Yes, I'm just saying that it's too bad you don't offer any of the vegan items in a combo." Again, he responded, "Its my restaurant, it's my menu, and I don't appreciate your comments." In that moment I decided he didn't deserve my money, and turned around to leave. After reflection, I am really shocked. As the Amazon burns, as atmospheric carbon is quickly on the rise, as we reach the point of no return with respect to climate change, and humanity is near the verge of extinction, those of us who are trying to do better, trying to protect the planet, and do our part to benefit EVERYONE, we still have to deal with negligence, and agression. The most unauthentic Afghani/Pakistani/Indian food I've ever had. I bought the Nihari recently and it didn't look or taste anything like one. It just tasted like a normal beef curry. No thickness to the gravy, no tenderness to the meat, even the onion on the side wasn't the crispy caramelized version it's supposed to be. The gravy was also not consistent like it should be. It looked like it was stored frozen and heated up for me. Which brings me to the next point. Why does it always take 15 minutes to serve any item? If the food was made fresh everyday, it would be in a big pot waiting to be served but that doesn't seem like the case here. Not gonna knock on the naan because it's next to impossible to find the authentic Afghani naan in Canada and this is no different. The combo came with delicious rice and side salad and naan. The sauce was flavourful and creamy, needed a dash of salt for my taste...but it paired perfectly with the rice. As for the goat curry, it was a very small bowl and a small salad for the price $10+, it did not come with any carb and was ordered separately. One of my regular go-to places in the area. I have been frequenting this restaurant, mainly for take away, for the last three years and will likely do so as long as I live in the area. I have not tried a wide variety of dishes, but the Tandoori Kebab Dinner and Sultana Kebab Dinner are two must haves! They also make a fantastic Biryani, but it it not available all day so try that out if you are looking for a satisfactory, filling lunch. That about sums up this place...
