What an incredible place this is. My wife and I went here last weekend and it was everything we could have wanted out of a restaurant. I'm not sure it's really "fusion" any more than any other immigration-generated cuisine is, technically, but either way the flavors (Peruvian) and techniques (Japanese) are absolutely mind-blowing. A dimly, but pleasantly lit and smartly decorated long dining room are laid out with plenty of space for all guests with a great view of the kitchen space in the back half and a glimpse of the impressive bar from virtually anywhere in the place. Also, be sure to check out the upstairs to see the hallway and the bathrooms, even if you don't have to go. We opted for the Chef Experience, which was an eight-course tasting menu (though a couple courses were actually two dishes and we ended up with more like 10 or 11 dishes by the time was all said and done). The chef came out prior to the feast, which gave us an opportunity to share allergies (wife is gluten free/celiac) and food preferences. He made some slight adjustments to our menu and it all was excellent. It led off with the shishito pepper appetizer, then went into the Yellowtail Nikkei sashimi, a deluxe sushi platter, a beef semi-tartare, a salmon dish, a pot roast-esque plate, and then a passion fruit creme brulee, among others. Not a single bad or even "meh" dish. And let me tell you that by the end we were STUFFED. Honestly, probably could have done without maybe one or even two courses and been really comfortable. For cocktails, I ordered the kakigori (photo included) and the aleteo. Presentation and flavors on both were stellar. The Mrs. ordered a couple glasses of wine from a very solid list - a rose and a burgundy - both of which were perfect. This is absolutely a place we look forward to returning to someday. As fantastic as the Chef Experience was, I would say we'll probably forego it next time just because of the sheer volume of food, but it was definitely worth it to do it once and experience all that amazingness!

This place is amazing, some of the best food I've ever had. It's not particularly cheap, but I would recommend ordering family style and sharing everything, because you'll definitely want to taste it all. The ambience is very unique and modern. Definitely an upscale location that's great for a group dinner.

A very boujee restaurant with long waits for service but the food makes up for it. You should definitely try the octopus!

We came on Sat 2025-01-18 to experience the Jungle Brunch. Chotto Matte is an amazing restaurant focusing on Nikkei cuisine. Nikkei are Japanese people who immigrated to Peru. Nikkei cuisine is a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian elements. There is a Sushi Bar, where you can dine at a counter and watch the Sushi chefs ply their culinary art. Along the same lines, there is a Peruvian bar, called a Robata Bar, with the same concept of counter seating where diners can be entertained by the Peruvian grill masters at work. Since it is an open kitchen style, the chef will definitely put on a show. When you enter the restaurant, you are immediately treated with a huge colourful mural. The host can check in your coat. Their dishes are elevated in quality and presentation. And, yes, they are also elevated in price. There are so many servers, all females, from what I observed, cheerfully attending to the diners. The female bartender can really put on a show (when I watched her) while making a cocktail! The vibe is colour, lively, entertaining, and with great food and service. There are several locations around the world, and they all have the same decor. The bright, colourful murals are painted by an artist out of Miami, called "Lefty Out There". He is sent to every location to hand paint the murals. At the upstairs washrooms, the hallways are painted with a neon coloured mural, painted by a different artist (#ElaineDefArtist), which is the most photographed decor at this restaurant. There is a huge main dining area, along with a little blocked-off area if you want more privacy. Near the entrance is a bar lounge where you can relax alongside the huge bar area, which is stocked with many different alcohol. There is lively South American music playing in the background.  Thrre is a live DJ every Wed to Sat. This restaurant has different themes: 1. Sat features a Jungle Brunch, enjoyed by diners of all ages. There is a "bird man" walking around with two exotic tropical birds who can even stand on your arm so you can take pictures with it. There is a lady "fire dancer" who performs with fire. 2. There is Steak and Sushi Sundays. 3. Fri is their "Chotto After Dark" in the lounge area. There is a live DJ, fire dancer, and a special menu. There is a large patio used during warmer  weather. It is decorated with lots of greenery to reflect the Peruvian jungle, giving a different vibe from the concrete jungle of Toronto. Music is very important to the restaurant. In fact, they pipe their music to the outdoor patio all year round! It attracts people to come in and investigate the restaurant. There are many locations around the world. The first location was in London, England. The second location was in Miami, USA. The third location was this location, in Toronto,  Canada, established in 2019. The flooring and windows have a black & white Herring Bone design at all worldwide locations. The ceiling uses preserved wood with a Shou Sugi/Suji Ban, a Japanese technique of charring the wood to preserve it  this is also at all worldwide locations. There are large Italian lava rocks used at the reception/host stand and at the two kitchens. Again, this is at all worldwide locations. The owner and founder is Kurt Zdesar, an experienced restaurateur with a track record in establishing and developing fine dining restaurants throughout Europe. The executive head chef is Jordan Sclare. He has travelled to and cooked in Hong Kong, Japan, Spain, Ireland, Israel, Monaco, Greece and had spent a month in Peru with Kurt Zdesar, eating in all the restaurants Lima had to offer including, carnivals and markets on his search to find the real taste of Peru. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible. There are separate male/female washrooms upstairs, so they are not wheelchair accessible. There is paid neighbourhood street parking. Review 2025-012

Chotto Matte review This is a fabulous restaurant, through and through. Came here for a Yelp event last month, and was so hyped to come back for a proper sit-down meal. The vibes, the music (shout-out to the super talented DJ Dao!), the service by Jennifer H and team-- everything was perfect. We had... Spicy chicken karaage - not too spicy; I liked the sweetness Yellowtail Nikkei Sashimi - oh my gosh, that sauce! What magic! The hostess told me that the first time she had this, she cried, so of course we had to find out why. Daaaamn this was good. Chotto Ceviche and Lychee Ceviche - because who knew that a lychee could be a lovely stand-in for fish in a ceviche? Both versions were excellent. Possibly also tear-worthy. Tuna tostadas - pro tip: don't use too much sauce; the tostadas are yummy on their own Dragon roll - delicious but underwhelming compared to the bold flavours of everything else Nasu Miso - the best eggplant! Warm and covered in an apricot sauce, with puffed soba for crunch Mochi ice-cream - so lovely of them to send this out when they found out we were celebrating! I will recommend this restaurant to everybody. As we went home, we decided that the only thing that wasn't A+ was the very aggressive triple-ring lighting over the washroom sinks. If that's the only thing we have to complain about, I'd say this place is worth going to again and again.

    Eggplant. Just ok

My husband and I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the fish dishes here. The miso cod was 100% worth the price and my husband really enjoyed the crispy tuna (I could not partake bc I'm pregnant) but the other dishes (mushroom tostadas, fried eggplant) were just ok.

I've recently went back here after 2 years and the vibe of the restaurant is still the same. They have great entertainment options while dining over the weekend. Our private Yelp event got their Fire show but I've seen them bring in animals too! The summer time they have a jungle theme on the patio. Service was good, friendly and quick. I do recall in my past visit, being the same. They have coat check for guests. The event provided us with 4 selections of some of their popular dishes. They claim the cuisine is Japanese with Peruvian influences, but out of the dishes I tried, it did not remind me of Peru. (Miso Eggplant, miso black cod, chicken Karrage, vegan sushi) I highly recommend the black cod as one of their best options. The Spicy chicken Karrage and sushi were nothing special. I found the Vegan Sushi a bit hard to chew.

Innovative and artisanal. After much deliberation, my friend and I each ordered the vegetarian tasting menu. We wanted to try a variety of dishes, with the tasting menu giving the best bang for our buck. We're not strict vegetarians but this set menu version had the most dishes that appealed to us (though it sounded like you could order one of the meat based menus and potentially swap one dish out if it wasn't appealing). However, we felt we couldn't eat here without ordering at least one raw fish dish, so we decided to split a small order of the yellowtail sashimi. Every dish in the tasting was artfully presented and intricately flavored. Everything was delicious, but our favorite was the first course of "lychee ceviche" - the lychee looked so convincingly like raw seafood that I had to double check they gave us the right item. The sauce was an intriguing blend of cilantro oil and something else that I can't pinpoint. Our absolute favorite was actually the yellowtail sashimi though- the flavor combination of cilantro, tomato, soy sauce, and fish was out of this world. Two small dings. My cocktail (the Jade shade (?)) fell flat into lemon-lime soda territory - I was hoping the cardamom and wasabi notes would shine through more. Secondly, while everything in the vegetarian tasting menu was incredible, I would love to see the chefs push their talents and include a dish centered around a vegetarian protein such as tofu or buckwheat - vegetarians eat more than just vegetables! Logistics: - indoor and outdoor seating - reservation recommended but it wasn't terribly crowded on a Wednesday night - limited street parking nearby but very transit accessible - many vegetarian options; potentially gluten free options based on raw ingredients but you'd need to check whether sauces are tamari based; they were careful and accommodating of my friends nut allergy

What a find! Food, Fun, Fantastic! Will totally recommend this restaurant.. a don't miss when in Toronto. The combination of ambiance (artistic decor & music) and unusual and delicious fusion cuisine (Japan and Peru) all added up to a super-positive experience. Service was excellent as well.

This is the most beautiful, upscale, uplifting place. Amazing DJ on Fridays, delicious food and cocktails. A little bit on the pricey side but the items I have tried so far are delicious. Spicy edamame is so good. My friend loved the crab sushi roll and my favourite is the Kagigori cocktail. Beautiful vibes and amazing decor.

We decided to celebrate a birthday but didn't book anything. Somehow this was the only place that had availabilities at a reasonable time. This restaurant is so cute and so beautifully decorated. It has outdoor and indoor seating. We decided to sit outdoors because the weather was nice. The menu features Japanese and Peruvian food. You can do the tasting menu or a la carte, tapas style. The waiter recommended 3-4 dishes per person however we weren't very hungry. We started with the lychee ceviche. This was a very unusual dish. It had leche de Tigre which was the broth, made with blended fish, sweet potato, corn, and the star--lychee. It was a blend of sweet and savoury and spices. I really liked it because I've never had anything like it before. Next we tried the spicy chicken karaage, which was my favorite dish we ended up ordering another one. It was spicy and crispy and a little sweet and well seasoned. Next we tried the octopus (tentaculos de pulpo). The presentation for this was so nice. It had 5 pieces of grilled octopus, and purple potato puree. I thought it was good, however one of the pieces was inedible (maybe it was just decor?). We also had the BBQ baby back ribs. Very juicy and tender, brushed with a BBQ glaze and nuts sprinkled on top. The nuts added a very nice crunch. Finally we finished with dessert, they brought out a candle (the dessert wasn't free). We ordered the panela caramelized apple dream which was apple, pear topped with vanilla ice cream. It was a huge dessert, definitely shareable. The apple/pear was warm and crispy and soft and the ice cream just complimented it so well. Loved this place, so unique, so delicious. Service was amazing, the DJ was also great. Just great vibes. I'll be coming back for sure!

At our table for four we went a bit overboard ordering. Likely we should have gone for one of Chotto Matte's tasting menus. Beware that while the individual prices for the tapas style dishes seem reasonable in total it can add up quickly. Very well prepared cocktails, especially their pisco sour. Nice wine list but few options sub $100. Setting cost aside, what you get is a culinary adventure. Rarely can you order 10+ dishes anywhere and have everyone at the table agree that they are all exceptional. I've never really longed to be a vegetation but I could very much consider it after tasting their lychee ceviche, which was as much fun to eat as it was to say. The standard ceviche is excellent as well. Both are essentially identical substituting lychee. You'll find a pic of the Robata duck breast, thinly sliced and succulant. Black cod Aji Miso is a must. Shout out to the yuca fries. Our server was delightful, friendly and informative. As a side note, whether you need to go or not, take a walk upstairs to the washrooms. It's an experience. If possible leave room for dessert. We failed and shared just one passion fruit crème brûlée which as my wife would say, "was to die for".

I was dining solo, and just really wanted to experience some good Peruvian food that I haven't had in a long time. I ordered from the lunch menu and opted for two lunches - gluttonous I know - but I wanted to try the Ceviche de pescado and the Aji de Gallina. I asked about Chicha Morada to drink, but it hadn't been prepared yet, so I had maracuja juice (passion fruit). First of all, the ceviche was outstanding! It's a simple tilapia, but it was so perfectly prepared. I loved the little sweet potato garnish, and the tangy flavor was spot on. I felt like I was eating the ceviche I had back when I was in Peru. The server also brought a small dish of Peruvian corn (crunchy corn kernels) with my drink while I waited for the entrees to come out. These were perfect little snackers! The Aji de Gallina came next and it was also exactly like the homemade aji de gallina I had at the home I stayed at while in Peru. It was so reminiscent of homecooked food, and it was exactly what I wanted. Of course, I couldn't finish it all, and my server boxed it up for me to take home. Speaking of my server - a HUGE shout out to Alessandra who was so kind and friendly. Since the restaurant was relatively empty I had the opportunity to chat with her more than I might normally chat with a server. I ended up showing her photos from when I was in Peru and about being in Toronto for the day. I was just very excited to find authenitc Peruvian food since it's not something easily accessible here in my city. Alessandra was a delight, and she even sent me home with some extra Peruvian corn for a snack which I happily ate on my train ride home the next day. She definitely didn't have to do that! I really hope that I get a chance to visit this restaurant again! Also, as an American, the prices were really good. I spent only $34 USD for two entrees - so if in a normal situation when I wasn't over eating, I could easily have had a $18-20 lunch that was filling and delicious.

Tacu-Tacu (rice with refried beans) was as expected. The mahi-mahi came as a big chunk of fish with nice grill marks - delicous and tender. The mixed seafoood had great sauce and seasoning. You can never go wrong with Arroz con Mariscos in any Latin American restaurant - well seasoned yellow rice with peas, carrots, and a boatload of mixed seafood (large tiger shrimps, small shrimps, mussels, squid, scallops). It was very flavourful and filling. The side sautéed vegetables, however, were disappointing. It consisted of broccoli, cauliflower, red and yellow bell pepper, and red onion - great mix, but WAY TOO SALTY. I think they used too much soy sauce. Service was great - all the staff were very friendly and attentive. The washrooms were clean and they had multiple stalls, as well as a gender-neutral and wheelchair-accessible washroom. Parking was easy - plenty of space in the plaza parking lot.

I've actually had Brasa previously many years ago for a Yelp event but this time I decided to stop by the Queen St. location to grab dinner. Their menu boasts unique flavours where ingredients are fresh and nutritious. I decided to order a bowl from their phone app where my order was made in about 15 min. Upon arriving at Brasa, the space is accessible where the cashier/food counter area is to your right. On the left there is bar seating where you could enjoy your items there. I mentioned to staff that I was there to pick up my food where it was already made. In terms of food, I ordered the tuna ceviche bowl (Organic tricolour Peruvian quinoa, marinated tuna, avocado and sweet potato blossoms, two types of Peruvian corn, finely sliced red onion) which cost around $17. I had the bowl for dinner and it felt super healthy with the quinoa, avocado, and tuna! The ingredients tasted great together and the crunchy corn added a crunchy textural element to the bowl. Overall, a healthy alternative in the Queen/University area!
