Came here with a party of 12 and they were prompt in sitting us and getting our orders in. Parking at this restaurant is a bit difficult because there's limited spaces and they're a popular location. You might have to park in the neighborhood and walk over. Food was flavorful and delicious! I would recommend getting the eggplant appetizer and the aushak dumplings. The kabobs were cooked very well and the sauces went perfectly with the sauces they provided. I got the saffron milk cake for dessert and the saffron flavor was pretty light. Overall a delicious dessert that's pretty heavy. They only allow you to split the check two ways, just as a heads up. Definitely give this place a try for their Afghan food. read more

I came here with my mom and sisters for lunch and we didn't know what to get so my sister decided for us and when the food came out I was shocked on how much food it was. The new location of Kabul House exceeded our expectations! I have patronized the older Kabul House in Skokie before many times for lunch, and had always enjoyed the kabobs or the vegetarian platter lunch specials. However, I had never been to this new location and was able to visit this past weekend. We had a reservation for 4:30 pm on Saturday, and the restaurant was still busy at this off-time hour, which is always a good sign. The new building is very impressive inside, white tablecloth and arches in the doorways inside. The waiters and servers all have on ties and button downs too, so this could definitely be a fantastic place to celebrate a special occasion. We started our meal with complimentary flatbread which came with a tangy jalapeño sauce, very good. We wanted to try a wide variety of authentic food, so we ordered the following: -bulanee: pastry dough flat bread bites with spices, leeks, and mashed potato inside. $9 and was HUGE. Easily shareable, like at least 10 large pieces of bread. -mantoo; the star appetizer. Delicious ground beef and shredded carrots in dumplings, with spices and a yogurt tomato sauce. Super tasty and shareable among 2 people, I would say. Also comes in an entree size. $9 -Vegetarian platter: $14 to sample 4 of the tasty vegetarian fare. Spiced cauliflower, soft eggplant, creamy spinach, and my favorite, a very sweet baby pumpkin reminiscent of sweet potato with yogurt drizzled on top. My husband said he thought the eggplant was too soft, but I loved the texture. Comes with dill or carrot/raisin rice, you can't go wrong with either. The raisins in the carrot and raisin rice being out a nice sweetness to the buttery rice. -Lamb Shank: $17, hands down some of the best lamb I've ever had, fall apart fork tender and melt in your mouth. The manager told me they roast this lamb every day for 4 hours in the morning and it is a very popular dish. The lamb shank comes in a mildly spiced tomato stew with some roast potatoes that hold up the sauce very well. It is a good portion and comes with a huge side plate of either dill rice or carrot and raisin traditional Afghani rice. I got the dill rice and it was so buttery tasting, and fluffy, I could eat nothing but this rice! -Kabuli Palau: $17 this is the national dish of Afghanistan, it is the carrot and raisin rice, but tender pieces of lamb are steamed under the rice. HUGE portion again, we could not finish most of our entrees! Kabul House is so affordable for such an upscale meal. I will definitely be back. During the meal, they offered us tea service which is a citrus Afghani tea. I loved this gesture because it helps us slow down and enjoy the meal. After our meal, we got to sample the milk saffron tea, which is absolutely delicious way to end the meal. This is March special. The saffron flavor really comes through We also got to try FIRNEE, which is a creamy dessert which is yogurt -like in texture but not tangy at all in flavor . It is sweet and topped with pistachios, blueberries, and even has rose water notes. YUM. The service here is top notch, our water glasses were always filled when they reached half way. Very attentive and the party room would be great for a wedding or baby shower. read more

Wow, my wife and I stopped in for a quick mid-afternoon bite, but decided to opt for the combo platter #2 that feeds 5-6 so we'd have leftovers. We're so glad we did. The flavors were bold without being too hot or spicy. The lamb chops were delicious, followed by amazingly tender chicken. The ground lamb and beef kabobs were very tasty, especially when paired with the red and green sauces. The bright and spicy flavors pair beautifully with the meat. The combo also comes with the most amazing roasted eggplant, hummus and yogurt sides. We left stuffed, and easily had food for two more dinners. Kabul House is an unexpected hidden oasis in a concrete, suburban desert. As you walk in, you are greeted warmly by the staff, who have kindly provided a coat rack next to the door. The clean tiled decor pulls you in, as beckoning you to taste the spices and flavors of Afghani cuisine. Despite never having tried Aghani food before, I was instantly excited to embark on a culinary journey. A group of 7, we came in for dinner to celebrate a special occasion. We called ahead to try and reserve a table, knowing that Kabul House would be busy at that time of night. Though we called last minute, they graciously provided us a table and allowed us to BYOB a bottle of wine that we shared. We began with two orders of the Mantoo, a delightful dumpling-like dish filled with succulent beef and vegetables. The skins were perfectly steamed, barely containing the generous filling, and topped with a dollop of yogurt sauce, lentils, and overwhelmingly delicious spices. My group was primed for more after this delicious initial taste. We quickly ordered the Gosht Qorma, Chicken Kebab and Beef Kebab, all of which were juicy, complex, and immaculately presented. We had two types of rice - one was an Afghani rice flecked with bright carrots and sweet raisins. The other was a saffron rice that was noticeably fluffy and rich. Needless to say, we cleaned our plates and left raving about how delicious the meal was. Kabul House was so tasty, that I decided to come back four days later for lunch. This time my companion and I tried the hummus and lamb shank, and the said shank was piquing all my tastebuds. My well-travelled companion noted that it was some of the best hummus he's ever tried. While some hummus's hit you with pungent notes of garlic or lemon, Kabul House's really highlighted the subtle creaminess of the natural chickpeas. Simply stunning. Our waiter, Gerber, brought our dishes promptly and with joy, doing his best to authentically convey a homey, warm atmosphere. The affable server looked at his watch and nodded, we had made it. Our order? Beef kabob and Kabuli Palau (lamb pieces covered with rice covered with raisins and carmelized carrots), hummus of course! Went there for lunch with family and I have to say the food was really good. We started off with Hummus and Mantoo. The Mantoo which a ground beef dumplings were delicious. We then ordered a few platters of Spicy Chicken Kabob and Koobideh Kabob. Both dishes were grilled well and the meat was tender. We had the tomato soup, eggplant Boranee and potato and leek Bulanee for appetizers, and all had a lack of spiciness and freshness and tasted like they had been cooked many days before and stored in the fridge. This is a great place to try some Afghan food in the suburbs. I've been here numerous times with my family, and the food has consistently been good. The decor and vibe of the restaurant also really sell the Afghan theme. During our recent visit we started with the black cardamom tea which was strong and had great flavor, and I appreciated the fancy large pot it was served in. Next, we got the hummus appetizer, which tasted like typical hummus and came with soft bread to eat with. For my entree, I got the spicy chicken barg which is the star of the show and the reason I keep coming back. It is some of the juiciest and most flavorful chicken I have ever had at a restaurant.
