Delicious authentic [as far as I know] Afghan food and drinks. The dining area is a bit sparse and does not lend a cozy atmosphere. More of a cafeteria feel. We ordered through Grubhub and read that deliveries were running late due to high customer demand so we placed the order earlier to leave some buffer time for a delayed delivery, but the food actually arrived early. Even though we had to let the food sit on the counter for an extra 20 to 30 minutes before we could eat -- the food was still amazing! Honestly one of the best meals I've ever had! It started off a lil shaky due to some minor changes we had earlier on (issues with tableware and then finally changing tables) but our waiter very kindly accommodated our group of 9. We decided to order the group platter #2, along with 2 other entrees, the chicken kabob and the lamb shank (not pictured because I forgot). Honestly our group of 9 could've had just the Group Platter #2 and we would've not left hungry. All the apps were delicious but my favorite was the hummus and yogurt. When the meats platter came out, it was such a showstopper. I didn't expect it to be that plentiful based on the menu description. The meats where perfectly cooked - nice char but still juicy on the inside. Super flavorful. I'm not a fan of lamb and usually I'm turned off by the smell of it even if I'm not eating it but there was no lamb smell whatsoever. Those who did eat the lamb enjoyed it very much. The beef and chicken were absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked. We had ordered half Afghan and half dill rice. The dill rice was more popular. I think the Afghan felt slightly new because it's sweeter since it's topped with raisins. Still delicious but the dill rice was definitely a more comfortable dish. The overall ambiance of the restaurant combined with the friendliness of the wait staff made the whole meal such an enjoyable experience. I will definitely come back again. read more

Came in for dinner. Service was exceptional, ambiance is between casual and formal(sweet spot) and food was GREAT. Generally in restaurants I have experienced that not all categories of foods have the same impression. Very pleased to say here from the beverages to the entrees to dessert I felt wowed. Instantly I've become a returning customer. Lamb chops are bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. Not chewy or dried up or burnt or even unique smelling in a negative way. 11 of us came for dinner. Little did we know, there was only one server and one helper for a busy restaurant and night. We decided to take out chances and stay. The food was amazing, and all 11 concur. The service was better than some restaurants with full staff. We were all very impressed. 10/27/19 - I have eaten at Kabul House at the previous location on Oakton Ave in Skokie before, but have never been here to their new location in Evanston @ 2424 Dempster Ave. Nothing could have prepared me for the new restaurant. I met my friend Tom and his friend Kahn for lunch there today. The new restaurant is beautiful new space and the lunch special was nothing short of remarkable. The serving sizes are generous & priced to not break the bank. I ordered a chicken Kabob that came w/ hummus & pita bread, salata & a choice of rice. The options were either Basmati rice, dill or Afghan carrot & Raisin. The food came out beautifully presented. The chicken Kabob was the best I ever had perfectly cooked & seasoned. The chicken was so tender & succulent so tasty I savored every bite. The hummus was excellent perhaps the best I ever had (on par w/the hummus from Larsa's). The white rice w/saffron was also deliciously seasoned. The restaurant ambiance is very nice w/very good service. My gym friend Tom (actually a priest) is such a great guy to be around & the food was remarkable. I truly enjoyed the dining experience. Will I be back again? Hell yes!!!! read more

Why are you hiring people that can't let you know over the phone that you are not accepting cards?? I'm going to get up, get my family ready(which isn't an easy task), call to make sure there's no wait which there wasn't, and then when I get there your credit card machine isn't working? Really? It's 2023.. I would suggest having a tablet with data on it so you can at least accept payments. Or at the least let your customer know what's going on over the phone when they call. Just about covered every choice offered on the menu, all delicious. The Koobeidah beef is fantastic with explosive flavors. The barg was the best marinated tenderloin I have ever tasted. I will attempt to copy it LOL The rice choices are interesting as well. I tried the Afghan rice and found it to be much taster than the plain white rice. The dish combination with Koobeidah and Barg is called Soltani, which means meal (understatement when you see the portion size). I've come to this place a lot and each time I visit it seems something is off more and more. To start, the menus are very filthy and need to be replaced - not cleaned. All the cups - water, wine, tea have dried food on them. After finishing appetizers, patrons are expected to reuse their flatware - I shouldn't have to ask for a new fork when my main entree arrives. The appetizers are very good, at least the ones I ordered. My main entree however arrived lukewarm and the rice definitely wasn't prepared fresh as it was crunchy and appeared to be quickly reheated. There was a foreign object in my entree and the server was very kind about it after I notified him. I declined the offer of a new entree. The guys who refill your beverages and bring your food to the table have an attitude problem and come off as they don't want to be there. You can clearly see they don't smile and are irritated when you ask them for something. This alone makes the place uninviting. Kabul house was great when I first visited many years ago, sadly it has gone downhill in my recent experiences and I won't be visiting in the future. read more

I have been going to this restaurant for authentic afghan food for years. As I am from Peshawar we really cherish any food related to back home. Their food used to be really good back in the days. They used to make with care, used authentic spices, the taste used to be really good. I wish I could say the same about their quality of food now. They have started to cut corners in every way. Now their main dish, kabuli polao (which is upwards of $20 dollars) is mixed with white rice which is really sad. If I wanted white rice, I would have ordered white rice. Even their portions are so so. Please look at the picture I posted. Because of these reasons I would not recommend anyone going there. I think there are many other good alternatives out there like noon-O-kabob whose quality is still the same. Hopefully, one day Kabul house will improve their standard but right now it's not up to par. read more

We walked in on a Sunday evening and were placed at a table right next to the kitchen even though there were open tables everywhere. We asked if we could sit in the main dining area and were told that all the tables were reserved even though there were more than 10 tables open. We also asked if we could sit outside and join the two tables together to make enough room for our party of 5 to which we were also told no because the waiters "couldn't come outside at that area even though we were still in the designated veranda area. We also looked online and saw that they had reservations open for the time that we were there. There were also no "reserved" signs on the table. We were told that we had to wait an hour and a half for us to be seated in the main area even though again there were more than ten tables open. The person at the front named Chantel made us feel discriminated against and was basically telling us to leave and her whole demeanor was rude. Shame on this establishment. read more

What can I say about Kabul house that you haven't already heard? When I was helping my mom plan my bridal shower, I had a really hard time choosing a venue because I wanted a lot of light. I didn't want a space that was closed off and dark. So although I knew about Kabul house since I had dined here so frequently, it didn't cross my mind to have my bridal shower here until my mom suggested it. I scheduled a meeting to meet with Zaki to see if they would be able to accommodate a party of 55 on a Saturday around noon. Zaki was more than happy to help us out and he was also fair in his price as well. You know how sometimes business owners can throw in a fee here and there towards the end? That wasn't the case here. Zaki was so upfront, genuine, professional and honest. He told us his expectations, what he can do for us and the service we'll be receiving. When you're a frantic bride worrying about every detail, to be able to work with someone like Zaki is truly a Godsent. I was also very happy to have selected the menu with him on the spot with my mom- he even requested the kitchen make some items for us so we could taste test and see if we enjoyed them. It was really nice! We reserved the date and time about two months ahead of time. Fast forward to the day before the bridal shower, we brought so much sweets in the night before and the staff was so amazingly accommodating. They had one to of fridge storage in the back for all our sweets (Thank God). On the morning of the shower, my bridesmaids, cousin and I went to set up. This place is so beautiful on its own that it's really doesn't need much to open it up and make it beautiful. The waiters set up all the tables and aligned them appropriately. We set up a dessert table with a backdrop and used command wall hangers so we wouldn't damage Kabul House walls. The waiters brought out another table for us to put some of the game and gifts on. It may not look like it but there was a lot of space- the place is really beautiful. Some of my guests were there for the first time and I truly believe they were blown away by the space and food. The food- we had family style with chicken, steak, rice and veggies. It was all so delicious!! To say my guests devoured it is an understatement- everyone really enjoyed it and a lot of my guests were so impressed that it was Halal! I highly recommend the food, the place and the atmosphere to everyone. As for anyone thinking of planning a bridal shower, baby shower, engagement party, etc here- speak with Zaki!! Guys, the hype is real. Kabul House has amazingly delicious food. I went with the basic "Chicken Kabob with saffron rice." Simple is beautiful, right? I was blown away! The chicken was so tender and flavorful. The rice was buttery with just the perfect seasoning. I wish I could eat that rice every day. There was a pepper on the side, which I also absolutely loved, but caution to those who have trouble with spice because it does pack a punch! I liked that I could take bits off to eat with each bite. The tomato on the side was also amazing - sweet and charred just right. It's a very nice restaurant and was packed full of people. It took some time for the food to come out, but you get some bread with chutney to snack on. I admittedly don't know much about this type of cuisine, but I'm very open to try anything on the menu. Kabul House is a very quaint gem of a restaurant found surprisingly in a suburban area. ATMOSPHERE/ARCHITECTURE: 9/10 The look of Kabul House from the outside is already impressive on its own. It is its own free standing building with its own parking lot. Inside, you are clearly stepping into another culture and the immersion is rather astonishing. The interior decor is beautiful and it is a spacious restaurant. It has several separate large dining rooms from what I could tell and by my estimate, I would say the capacity hovers around 100. SERVICE: 8/10 Service was quite good. Our waiter was very helpful with selection, he was knowledgeable about the menu and struck the perfect balance between attentive and not being overbearing. FOOD: 8/10 Combo #2 Beef and Lamb Kebab - 9/10 - Wow. This was an amazing dish. Almost all of the Middle Eastern food that I have had before has been street food from halal carts in NYC, which I loved. But this was on a whole different level. The flavor in each piece of beef and lamb was clearly burned into it. The plate was also massive. Definitely the best Middle Eastern food I've had in Chicago. Mantoo Plate - 7/10 - Excuse me if I am making broad assumptions, but mantoo appear to be essentially dumplings with different types of filling and seasoning. The filling here is spiced ground beef and some vegetables, plated with a yogurt based sauce. I enjoyed these, but comparatively to the kebabs, these were average. Baklava - 8/10 - I love my baklava. And this was a free Yelp offer, so cash in on that if you stop here. A pastry based desert, layered decadently with honey and nuts, this was good as any baklava. VALUE: 7/10 I think everything here is fairly priced. In general it is on the touch of the expensive side if you're just looking for a lunchtime meal, but you get what you pay for here in strides. PROBABILITY OF RETURN: 8/10 I would most certainly come back here given the chance. TO EAT OR NOT TO EAT: If you have any taste for Middle Eastern food, namely Afghani food, or you want to try it for your first time, this is an excellent place to do that at. OVERALL: 8/10 read more

You could tell they used good quality ingredients in all their dishes. We were there for a friend's birthday, and they surprised her with a cake and candle, which was such a nice touch.
