When the location in the Dempster-McCormick area closed, I was a bit put off. Then I found out that there was this new location on Oakton. Noting that some restaurants have a tendency to upgrade their restaurant and compromise the food, I was slightly hesitant. Then I gave in. Aush-rishta. Boranee baunjan. Mantoo. Murgh chalau. They retained the authenticity of the food. Yes! The food, of course, is not the ubiquitous brand of Middle Eastern fare: humus, babaganoush, pita bread, etc. I am reminded of something crossed between Pakistani, Indian, and Iranian food. All of it is outstanding. The aush-rishta (soup) was flavourful without being heavy-handed with salt. The boranee baunjan is now my favourite eggplant dish. The mantoo left me stary-eyed. And the murgh chalau gives Indian murgh makhani a run for its money. The service is fantastic and the price falls well below what you'd expect for such a bloom in taste. I shall return. My entire experience was great here all the way from the delicious mantoo appetizer down to the side of moist and flavorful Afghan rice. Portion sizes were enormous with tons of meat, possibly competing with the bargain option of Pita Inn for price per ounce of meat in a highly rated restaurant. I highly recommend ordering any of the grilled meats with Afghan rice and the Aush-Rishta soup. I'm usually reluctant to drive out to the suburbs for a meal but I make the exception for Kabul House. Whenever we're out there, it's always a grand meal for an affordable price. For the appetizers, we have tried several items: aushak, mantoo, bulanee, kadu, and gulpi. Majority of the items are vegetarian so I can just randomly point at a few items to please the veggie-loving mother. Personal favorites are the mantoo and bulanee. Mantoo are steamed dumplings packed with spiced ground beef. The tomato sauce and yogurt mint sauce is very unique. I would use the complimentary bread to wipe that sauce clean off the plate and not waste a drop. The bulanee is similar to naan bread but chewy and stuffed with fresh leeks, scallions, and spiced potatoes. This plate comes with several pieces and is great for sharing so you're not overly stuffed before the entrees even arrive. Every entree comes with a complimentary soup. The choices are aush rishta and tomato lentil soup. I prefer the aush rishta which is a thick soup with chickpeas, lentil, red kidney beans, noodles, and parsley. Again, this is great for dipping the complimentary bread. With entrees, we have tried the murgh, three kabob combo, kabuli palau, and vegetarian platter. My favorites are the murgh and kabuli palau. The murgh is a plate of juicy, boneless, and marinated chicken kabob. It's well spiced and you can't go wrong with this choice especially if you pair it with Afghan rice. I also always order the kabuli palau which is tender pieces of boneless, braised lamb shank mixed in a heap of seasoned Afghan rice. It's complimented with carrot strips and raisins to boost the texture and flavors. The amount is good for two meals. There is no such thing as too much spices. I only know I can't get enough of Kabul House. Therefore, noting the recent news of KH potentially moving to another town, I will follow and visit wherever that may be! read more

I came here on a Friday evening around 7:30PM to celebrate a friend's birthday. We couldn't make reservations because it has to be for a group of 6 or more; however, we were still seated immediately..The waitress or owner was very friendly and kindly provided us first timers with some food recommendations as well.. *one thing I did noticed upon entering the restaurant was that my eyes became really dry/irritated. it might be due to the smoke from the charbroiled entrees..only people with sensitive eyes would notice i guess.. Food: Mantoo ($6.95):comes with 4 pieces of steamed dumplings filled generously with ground beef, onions and spices, and topped w/ tomato meat sauce and yogurt. The portions are small, but good enough since the entree will fill you up. The mantoo tasted ok - I would prefer to order Mantoo over the Aushak. Aushak ($6.95): comes with 4 pieces of Afghan ravioli with leeks & scallions, served on yogurt-mint topped with tomato meat sauce. The presentation of both the Mantoo and Aushak are very similar, yet they do taste different. The Aushak just tasted ok to me. Boranee Baunjan ($6.95): 2 generous pieces that look similar to Pita Bread..It is eggplant seasoned with spices, then baked with fresh tomatoes, served on yogurt garlic mint sauce. I really really really recommend that everyone tries this appetizer as it is delicious and the yogurt garlic mint sauce complements the the Baunjan. MUST TRY! for the eggplant haters.. it doesn't even taste like eggplant, tastes like potatoes!! Murgh & Koubideh ($12.75): comes with one skewer of charboiled chicken kabob and one skewer of charbroiled group beef kabob and your choice of rice & soup. The food is definitely more than enough for one person or for big eaters, enough food to fill them up. I enjoyed the chicken kabob the most because it was cooked perfectly. Shrimp Kabob: comes with exactly 5 average sized shrimps and rice..delicious as well. Qabili Palau ($13.95): tender chunks of seasoned lamb served under a heap of seasoned rice that is garnished with sweet carrot strips & raisins. The sweet carrot strips & raisins tastes good with the rice! I am not a huge fan of lamb dishes besides eating gyros at Greek Town..so the dish was just alright to me. It does come with a green hot sauce which is very spicy but tastes great w/ the rice. Lentil soup (comes with entree/combination): the lentil soup was light and tasted great! try it! :) Food Portion: we came with a group of 4 females and 1 male and shared 3 appetizers and 1 entree, 3 appetizers, 3 kabob dishes (each entree/kabob dish comes with soup)..we were content with the amount of food that came out and had some leftover rices at the end of our meals.. After reading reviews on Yelp, I gave this place a try. Even though it was about 10 miles from my hotel. Initially, I wanted to pick up food, and bring it to the hotel room with me. So I made a phone call for pick up. But by the time I arrived at the restaurant, I was starving and requested the person behind the counter that I would like to eat at the restaurant. I was given a table, and I went to use the restroom. As I came out in few minutes, very cold food was awaiting me on the table. I wanted to speak to someone to ask for water and have the food be warmed up. Basically, I was sitting abandoned in a corner. Even though the servers were around other tables but not taking the time to look and ask if I needed anything. So, I went to the counter and asked that my food to be warmed up and if someone would give me water. Overall, not a positive experience. I have been here 4 times in the last two weeks. I am officially addicted to the excellent cuisine and service. Chicken Koobideh is currently my favorite dish. It's ground chicken, seasoned with fresh parsley, green onions, garlic and classic Afghani spices, chargrilled and served with rice, charred tomato and banana pepper. The beef koobideh is similar but without the fresh herbs, the flavors are not as bright. Beef koobideh is served with rice, charred onion, bell pepper and banana pepper. The sautéed spinach dish is perfect addition to these meaty meals. It balances and lightens the flavors. Kabuli Palau, tender, boneless lamb under a bed of Afghani rice, is quite delicious as well. Mahi mahi kabob is heavily seasoned with turmeric. These large chunks of fish do not pair well with sweet Afghani rice. Try it with dill rice instead. Classic baklava and firmee are a cardamom lover's dream. Stay away from the Salted Caramel baklava. It is way too salty. read more

The service was just ok, our server did not check on us enough but no big deal. The food was good! What hurts this place is that Pita Inn is just down the street with similar food at cheaper prices. Is it better than Pita Inn? yes most definitely, but not by a huge margin. Think of this place as an elevated Pita Inn with servers and BYOB. He chose mantoo & Afghan rice, we had koobideh with dill rice and veg. platter with Afghan rice. (I'm a carnivore but know this dish is so outstanding that I can forego meat). Everything was delicious. The Afghan rice moist and slightly sweet from the raisins, the mantoo and koobideh with their own flavors. The cucumber cooler is refreshing and different. For dessert, the firmee is enough to share, but you won't want to. The rosewater delicately flavors the warm pudding topped with pistachios and berries. The service was friendly and efficient. I wanted to try as many dishes as possible, so I designed my meal around the vegetarian sampler dinner, because it included several items that are also on the appetizer menu. The eggplant, pumpkin and spinach were all delicious, but my favorite was the cauliflower, which was rich and exotically spiced. Dinner came with lentil soup, which had a nice balance. I also tried the cucumber salad, which was mixed with yoghurt and dill, and went well with several other dishes. But the real show stopper was the mantoo. These are like little raviolis, filled with a meat and lentil mixture that is rich, exotic, and incredibly complex. I scarfed down every bit. Kabul House is a cheerful corner restaurant with a modern interior. Service was very friendly and efficient. Finally had the chance to check out Kabul House a few months ago through a Yelp event, and I'm glad that my boyfriend and I were able to attend! It was a snowy January night, but the restaurant was packed. They served us vegetarian Aushak dumplings, a salad or two, chicken kabob, carrot and raisin rice, dill rice, kado borani challow, and the firnee. The chicken kabob stood out the most. My bf and I gave each other that look like "f#*k that's delicious!".. Tender, flavorful, and had that intoxicating smoky char all over. Can't beat it. We were hooked. That night, we had a chance to meet the owners, and they gave us a brief history of this family owned and operated restaurant. You can tell that they pour their heart and soul into their business day in and day out. It's evident through their excellent food and outstanding customer service. Less than a month after my first visit, I went back for carry-out, and ordered the chicken kabob and beef kabob. The chicken tasted the same, and the beef was just as tender and flavorful. Props for consistency! Their dinner portions are huge. I shared the food with my brother and still had plenty of leftovers. After a day of getting my taxes done and shopping with Mom, it was time for a suburban dinner and after much deliberation we landed at Kabul House. Mom and I had never been, and that was the right choice. It was like a Tuesday or something, so we walked right in and got a table, but that's not to say it was empty. Good traffic for a Tuesday night. As soon as we sat down someone brought us some bread and dippy stuff for it. Now that's service! We got an order of these meat dumplings that came with a meat sauce and a yogurt sauce. The server said 18 of 20 tables get them and so how was I supposed to turn that down? They also make an entree portion of it, it's so popular. Yummy! The meats were so delicious! I got a dish that had one filet mignon kebab and one ground beef kebab, kind of like a gyro or a kofta. They were both delicious! It's served with a beautiful mound of rice adorned with raisins and the sweetest carrots I've ever had. The portion was so generous I took half home and made two more small meals out of it. The shrimp looked soooooo good on the next table over and I had a little bit of a FOMO moment but then my food came and that was over. I love coming here. This is the second time I've come and it was just as good as I remembered. When my friend and i walked in we were greeted with a smile and they had us take a seat on a couch in a waiting area. It was very comfortable and the wait wasn't long. Our waiter was very nice and prompt. We shared the vegetarian dolma (grape leaves stuffed with rice and seasonings), and the vegetarian aushak (Afghan dumplings stuffed with scallions & leeks topped with a tomato sauce. These were delicious! I got the shrimp kabob with white rice and the afghan rice (I was sad they were out of dill rice because it's so good!) the rice was cooked terrific. And it came with a grilled tomato and an Anaheim pepper. I also got the Afghan salata (I added a little salt and Sumak... so good.) For dessert I redeemed a free piece of baklava and the server brought us over a pot of coffee on the House. Besides a little bit of time where we couldn't find our server the service was amazing. Clean and open, the decor is more modern than warm or classic. We ordered a typical starter with their delicious hummus and fresh baked bread, all items are made in house. Our waiter recommended the Chicken Soltani Kabob to allow us try some of their signature items, which includes both the Chicken Barg (butterflied chicken breast) and Chicken Koobideh (spiced ground chicken leg and breast), and a choice of rice. WOW! It was so good I almost ate myself to death, the portion is very large, heavy eaters will be more than satisfied, and light eaters will need a box to take home, or share it. My wife and I went here on a week night, when we arrived we were a little intimidated due to our casual dress. Kabul house is elegantly decorated, with well dressed staff, and white table cloths. We decided we would go in anyway, and do not regret it. We started with aushak (ravioli type dish), vegetarian dolma (grape leaves), and kadu (sweet baby pumpkin). The aushak is to die for, it is overwhelming with flavors that are all very subtle and tie together perfectly. For the main course my wife had the chicken kabob, marinated and cooked to perfection, the chicken was juicy and very tender. I had another dumpling dish named mantoo, surprisingly it was better than the aushak. We finished with baklava and carrot cake, followed by an espresso Throughout the entire meal the staff was fantastic. They were caring, polite and funny. It must of been obvious we were confused and multiple staff members helped us come to conclusions of what to order. We were served a complimentary plate of Afghan rice and told "you can't come to Kabul house and not eat afghan rice". I grew up in Skokie and never made it to their Dempster location before it closed. Then on a return trip to visit family, I noticed that had reopened at a much better location in downtown Skokie. I took that as a sign and ventured inside. All the reviews I read said i must have the murgh. Boy, were they right! Amazingly tender and flavorful. Also the lentil soup was probably in the top 3 lentil soups I have ever had. Service is friendly and attentive. This is usually what you get with family-owned and operated businesses. I can't believe it took me this long to visit Kabul House. Everytime I come up to visit my family, a trip to Kabul House will be in the offing. read more

Stopped by this past weekend to pick up a dinner sized portion of Mantoo. Ordered online for curb side pick up, as dine-in is not an option right now during the Coronavirus. We knew from the online menu that the order of Mantoo was $17, so we expected a big serving size. When we got home and opened the container, we were shocked to find a small container with about 10 small dumplings in it. At first we thought maybe they confused our order for an appetizer size, but the receipt showed the $17 dinner portion. What a waste of money! Love love love the veggie quorma lunch special here. I've been tempted by the koobidah but there's something about all of the wonderful textures and flavors of the quorma that keeps me coming back. The carrot raisin rice is the perfect slightly sweet counterpart to the earthy goodness of the stew. The hummus is wonderfully lemony and the pita bread slightly crisped with olive oil.
