Again, I found myself in a place so delicious, so amazing, that I wanted to order almost everything on the menu. All of the dishes we tried we finished with passion. The service can be a bit slow here, but it is worth the wait! The Beef Chalau is fantastic. It is small pieces of beef sautéed in kidney beans, onion, garlic & tomato base served with a plate of white basmati rice. Basically a cross between Afghan pot roast and chili. Make sure to add the crushed pomegranate leaves to give a bit of tartness to the dish. Save room for dessert. Their rosewater ice cream is not to be missed. Skip the almond honey cake. It is ok, but a bit dry. The ice cream is so much better! Wash everything down with an iced basil-mint tea. I cannot remember if the menu notes that it is sweetened, so be warned. It is very sweet, but the basil and mint temper the sweetness nicely. read more

Middle Eastern dining at its finest! I usually love meat on a stick that is well-seasoned, but Kabul House really blew me away with their quality that put them on par with some of the best chicken and lamb I've had anywhere. I highly recommend the rack of lamb. The meat was extremely succulent and needed minimal seasoning. Also served were grilled veggies that probably were cooked in the drippings of meat - absolutely amazing. The waiter also jokingly suggested we try the "best chicken in Chicago". We ordered a large plate of the classic grilled chicken that looked reddish from the outside, and it was supremely good and completely moist throughout. In all, they are hands down masters of their cuisine. Combined with their fantastic service and wide array of middle eastern desserts, Kabul House is definitely a gem of restaurant right here in Evanston. read more

Returned to Kabul for dinner last night and like my first review they really have great food. It hit the spot and they delivered on everything. Service: excellent our waiter last night kept us engaged and provided to us everything we needed for this to be a great experience our glasses were never empty and when my Afghan tea was almost empty they had another one just as I sipped the last sip. Decor of this place matches is good they are extremely clean and it is well kept by the staff. Food: excellent we got the lamb and the beef, meat was cooked medium and it was perfect. I'd bet I've never had lamb better at any other place. Really tender and I melted in my mouth. Afghan rice with raisins and carrots is a must have. Dessert: Pistachio moose cake was awesome after having our meal it hit the spot and was just enough for two. Price: I think this is well priced for what you get and the portions are awesome. Afghani food is highly influenced by Iranian cuisine, and the meat/ rice offerings were very much akin to what you'd get at a Persian spot. Chutney- like sauce w/ bread: 3 (sauce is amazing, but bread was not). Dolma (appet): 2 (I wanted to compare their dolma with traditional M.E. dolma {Assyrian, Turkish}, but they were far from. The Afghan dolma were also spread out on a tomato sauce that tasted like canned pizza sauce. Eggplant with yogurt (appetizer): 3.5 this was good, but not comparable to the authenticly delicious middle eastern dish you'd get at a Lebanese joint. Mootah: 3 Afghani dumplings with beef were good, but didn't taste much of the filling. The first few bites, you don't taste anything at all, but the aftertaste of several bites will (finally) leave you tasting the filling. The dumplings have a watery yogurt on top. Traditional rice with raisins, as well as plain rice: 4 (both were good) Lamb shanks: 4 good, tender meat on the bone, cooked in a fresh- tasting tomato sauce. Lattes: 4 (Illy brand beans) Dessert: baklava, and chocolate oreo cake. Baklava wasn't close to what it should be (PASS), but the chocolate cake was your standard, reliable American cake. I brought my family here for lunch after I defended my dissertation--needless to say one of the biggest day of my life! The food was excellent. The lamb kabob was the best tasting lamb we had ever had. The veggie dish was phenomenal. The tea was delicious and beautifully served. I was so impressed with Kabul House - the space and interior is beautiful and pristine. The restaurant was very full on a Wednesday night, and they actually had to open their private room to accommodate everyone. And now I know why... the food is fantastic. I absolutely adore Uzbeki food and Afghani food shares a lot of similarities. We ordered the mantoo, aushak, bulanee, Kabuli palau, and their famous chicken kebab for 4 people. All of the appetizers were hits, especially the bulanee in my opinion. The Afghani rice in the palau is to die for - the carrot and raisin add a delightful sweetness to the dish. The chicken was so flavorful and perfectly tender and moist - some of the best prepared chicken I've had. We ended off with a pistachio baklava which was really tasty and not overly sweet. Our waiter was super friendly with a great sense of humor and was ready to give suggestions when asked. It seems weird that they don't take reservations for smaller groups, as it would avoid the staff having to scramble to find tables. It comes off as somewhat disorganized, but otherwise, a lovely experience. We've been getting into a pandemic cooking/takeout rut and I wanted to mix things up and give Kabul House a try. HOLY DROOL -- our food arrived promptly, steaming hot and unbelievably delicious. I ordered the lamb shanks with saffron rice and husband got the chopped apple salad, chicken koobideh and naan. The food is cooked perfectly and the flavors are completely unexpected and beautifully balanced. My friend Suggested to try this place and the reviews were pretty good hence decided to try this place for dinner. Contrary to the reviews the place is a big disappointment for us in terms of both Service and Food.Not sure if 9 pm is a good time to be here but there were not too many people so at least the service could be a lot better. The Complimentary bread was soggy which they replaced it but forgot the salad.Good thing is we got a free appetizer for Check-In.Got Bulanee,which they served it quick but it dint really appeal to us as Indian Paratha is almost the same and it did not really offer anything new.We ordered Chicken Stew that came with Rice.Stew was more sweet than being spicy.Got Kabuli Pulao as they mentioned Authentic dish but the curry stuffed in was sweet too and the other dish was Some Lamb Kebab Platter which was Average .They had a grilled Jalapeno and Full Tomato with them.They had the same kind of rice(Dried Raisins and Shredded Carrot) for all the dishes which really did not have any flavor. Service was So horrible that we asked for a dip when we got the Bulanee and the server brought it after 25 min along with the Platter.They had to confirm twice to get me a Diet Pepsi that too with out Ice. I came to the new location. It is as good as their previous location and same price too. The chicken kabob that I love is now called "chicken boneless kabob" ($14). It is still juicy and tender, as the past three times I have tried it. I also tried the lamb shank ($17). It usually comes with Afghan rice, but I substituted it with dill rice. It was pretty good. The lamb was so tender, it was falling off the bone. I liked the spiciness of the tomato sauce, which complemented the sourness of the tomato pretty well. The potato that came with it was pretty good too. The flavor was bursting from inside. The portion was a bit smaller than the kabob. Also the lamb took really long to serve so please plan accordingly. Their new location was very fancy. It was way bigger than before. And now there have a free parking too! They were very friendly as always. But the service was slower than I remembered, but it was dinner time and the restaurant was packed. In short, I still recommend this place. read more

The food came on time, well balanced spice, ingredients and over all dishes. For 35 minutes you didn't know you had 2 of your main staples in * Seasoned Ground Sirloin Kabob * Beef Shish Kabob * White-Saffron ??? Or you didn't like the fact it was snowing and it was a single order placed. Hours of operation and treating every order like it matters are the two minimums every restaurant should abide by. I've only had takeout from the previous location, but the first time I went to the restaurant, even as I was simply waiting for food, the people walking around were polite and friendly. They even offered me a drink as I waited and told me the story of their their restaurant. I felt taken care of and valued as a patron of the establishment. This time, my friends and I visited the new location. It's very clean and while I heard some people complaining that they weren't served quickly enough, Kabul House is doing their utmost best to continue providing that great customer service and delicious food that they're known for, but in a bigger and better place. I give them a lot of credit and they really are doing wonderfully, especially having just moved to a new place! Besides that, the food is always dependably yummy. Visited July 31st 2019 For the first time but certainly not the last, I tried Afghan food. While hanging with my sister we both decided to try something new. Enter the Kabul House. I admit I have been interested for a while but thought some company on a trip would be better. So here we are! A well decorated place for of beauty and style. The decor simple and elegant. I felt like I had walked into a Afgan home. There were multiple dining rooms to chose for seating in the sun or away from it. NICE! I had a excellent waiter who wanted to make sure we enjoyed our experience. Wanting to try what is normal to the Afhan people we started with some dumplings. Very different from Chinese,  these were filled with meat on the inside but also covered in a red sauce with what appeared to be a yogurt cream. All were delicious. I think the red sauce was a slightly spicy chutney. We also enjoyed the green chile chutney and a yogurt based topping.  We ordered 2 dishes. Something native and a combination #2 kabob. First the Kabuli Palau which we were told is traditional to Afghan.  It was the first time I think I really enjoyed raisins in a hot dish. The rice covered lamb that seemed to be slow stewed or simmered.  Amazingly tasty dish. I would definitely recommend it to anyone with an open mind and palate . The next was the #2 combo kabob. It came with grilled lamb and your choice of chicken or ground sirloin kabob. I picked the recommended beef. Also has a side of rice. I picked Half Saffron Rice and half Traditional Afghan which come with the raisins.  Such wonderful flavors with clear neighboring Indian influences.  Also a great choice.  The waiter treated us to Desert of baklava and Custard Pudding called Firne plus traditional tea. Just a delight all the way around in this restaurant experience. I tried to find something wrong with this place but couldn't. Service,  great. Food, wonderful. Decor, awesome. Prices, reasonable. Did I mention how good the food was? The place was clean, the staff humble & accommodating.  It is just a good place to dine, relax and slowly enjoy the tea. I want to come back to try something else. That lamb they grilled was exceptionally tender and tasty so that alone will get me back in the door. Well done Kabul House. read more

We have been going to this restaurant for the past 15 years, across all of their different locations. We had a very nice dinner on Friday night where we ordered the lamb and rice, and the chicken dinner. The appetizers were also very good and you can never go wrong with this place, including the ambience and the service.
