This was my favorite restaurant in Skokie a few years ago, and it is still very good. I had my heart set on lamb chops but they were out, the lamb shank was very good. There dumplings are great, but I think they have changed the recipe for the sauce (?) I remember this appetizer being more hearty. The pumpkin appetizer is awesome. Beef kabobs were very good, I can't pick between the afghan style and dill rice. Service seemed slow, the table behind us had to wait a half hour to settle their bill. When I told her my name she didn't seem to have an issue but then 15 minutes went by and someone else who looked like a manager came by and asked for my name again and very rudely said I don't see your order, your name isn't here. This place has the best Barg kebob that I've ever had in Chicago area. Juicy and so yummy. I don't know the chief's secret but it is unbelievably tender. As an Iranian who knows about kebobs, I highly recommend their kebobs in the whole Chicago area. I like their kebobs more than any other Persian restaurants around Chicago. On our last visit, we tried their Baklava, so tasty and fresh. It is a little bit pricy but definitely worth it. The only comment I can give is that I was expecting them to change the table paper cover when they wanted to serve the desert since it was dirty from the main course and I didn't really like it. We had many traditional Afghan dishes, but whether you've tried it in the past or not - go for it. Be adventurous. You'll love it. Our meal began with man too, steamed dumplings with spiced ground beef and tomato sauce, then we had vegetarian platters with spinach, eggplant and pumpkin vegetarian platters with Afghan rice. For dessert we had firnee, a rose water rice pudding. Of course there are many lamb, fish, and kebab options. Their meats are sustainable and grassfed. I was recently on a business trip and came across this lovely gem! I'm usually good with writing reviews, but I don't even know where to start. My fingers are lost with words, or could it be my taste buds won't allow me to think? Whatever spell this place has placed upon me, they need to open a restaurant in Los Angeles, CA - heck, open a chain in every town! Food: The authentic flavors of the spices just blows your mind. Poultry is beyond flavorful and juicy. The amount of spice used is just perfect. What I ordered was soo good, that I came back a second time before I went back home. We have been going to Kabul House ever since it started as la Rosa's Pizza on main Street in Evanston. The owner added his native Afghan food to the menu. We tried it and we're hooked. Kabul house has moved multiple times and I was sad that they moved out of Skokie, but the parking and more space was a good idea. I am in love in the mantoo (dumpling filled with meat and a cream sauce), there lentil soup is not bad either. I usually order the kabob combo with half dill and afghan rice. I've visited during lunch and dinner my dishes are always perfectly cooked and seasoned. The bread they put on the table is good but don't eat too much save room for your food. read more

This is a great place for lunch or dinner. Restaurant is free standing building that is very nice from outside to inside. Seating area is big and very comfy with quiet afghan music playing in the back. Service is great and waitresses checks on frequently if you need anything. We tried kabuli piluw, beef kabob, borani bengan, mantu and aushak. Appetizers range about $10 a plate which is a bit high, but maincourse comes in huge quantities and very affordable prices. We've been going here regularly since their original location (two locations ago. First on Dempster in a smaller space. Then on Oakton. Now their current location). Owner was the sweetest guy. He passed away and I believe his sons are running the place now. Some of my fav parts of the menu have changed (they no longer give their amazing yogurt sauce with meals and their bread isn't what it used to be), but food is still great. The staff was super nice and efficient. The food was really tasty. We feel in the US portions are too big. But here they were just right. I always have to leave food or take a doggie bag. I didn't this time. The tea was a pot not a cup and the prices were even friendly. But if you want a cocktail it's BYOB. And that was fine also. I probably wouldn't have tried the tea. My friend ordered Baklava for himself. Our amazing waiter, without any prompting, cut a large piece in half and gave us both a porcelain plate of goodness drizzled with honey and pistachios. Then, he brought a silver tea with Afghani tea served in beautiful porcelain cups. Next, a luscious concoction of creamy yogurt, cheese, berries and pistachios was brought for us. It literally felt like a dream where your every wish is fulfilled without needing to ask! Needless to say, this is an incredible dining experience but also a real treat for the senses. I live in the area and always see tons of cars in the parking lot, so I decided to stop by instead of the usual kabob place we visit. We went through the take-out door, to order to-go. I ordered the same menu item I get from every kabob place I visit - barg and beef koobideh. Unfortunately, this was not a good meal at all. The barg was dry and terribly chewy. The koobideh was also dry, and tasted very odd. On top of this, I felt sick to my stomach after eating it. I really wanted to love this place, but unfortunately, I would not recommend. I know I've been meaning to come here for a very long time, so last Saturday afternoon I decided on lunch here and too bad they don't have a lunch menu. Prices for dinner are reasonable. Their Shish Kabob choices were fantastic!! My husband liked his beef and I so enjoyed the tender Cornish hen. The roasted tomato and pepper were done perfectly and I like how they give you a choice of 3 different rices. I did like the plain basmati rice with herbs and I only found the one with carrots and rice to be okay. I didn't like the sweetness to it so much, but I'm sure other opinions will differ. We had the Mantoo for appetizer and I really enjoyed that, too. When you check in for the first time on Yelp they offer 1 free dessert of either the baklava or firnee and I am so glad the waiter suggested the firnee because you can get baklava anywhere but not all restaurants and I haved how light and lightly sweetened the custard was. I prefer this type of dessert so this was perfect. It has a beautiful dining room and the decor is middle Eastern yet sophisticated. The service was delightful and the bathrooms clean and tidy. read more

AFGHAN-TASTIC Have you ever had Afghan food? No! Me neither until we walked in here the other day. I've been telling everyone I know about how good this place is, I just needed to sit down and write this review for all to read. We decided to go here during the middle of Chiberia's freezing cold snowstorm. We luckily found a street spot and when we got out of the car, we smelled the most amazing food ever. I hoped in my heart that these amazing smells were coming from the Kabul House. When we walked in the front door we knew we were in the right place. It smelled just as delicious as it did outside. I must say thank you to our fantastic waiter Dushan. He answered all of our questions and was very helpful during our whole meal. Thanks again for making our first experience with Afghan food a memorable one. On a side note there's a 10% off final bill with a Yelp check in...score!!! We decided to start out our meal with the Mantoo appetizer. It was 4 steamed dumplings that are filled with spiced ground beef, shredded carrots & onions. Then it is topped with a tomato meat sauce and yogurt mint sauce. I must say it was out of this world. We were so upset we only got the order of 4. Dushan had suggested we get the meal because it had 7. We should have listened. We will never make that mistake again. Next came the soups. First I had the Aush-Rishta soup which is made with chickpeas, lentil, red kidney beans, noodles with fenugreek, parsley, cilantro and garlic. The menu says "it is the best soup you will ever have" and the menu speaks the truth. The flavors and the spices were just fantastic. I went home and searched for a recipe to make this at home because it was that good. Next I had the Tomato Yellow Lentil Soup. This time the menu says, "Everyone who tries this soup calls it the best they've had!" This menu just doesn't lie! They have two soups here and both are just amazing. I'm so glad that both are on the menu. I recommend you just get both. You'll be happy you did. For the main courses we got the Murgh or Chicken Kabob. There were choices of 1 or 2 skewers. We went with the 2. The spices were similar to a Tandoori chicken. The pieces were very juicy, charbroiled & boneless. They use dark meat here and it is just yummy. If they had used white meat, then it might have been dry. We also had a choice of rice and went with the Afghan rice which was really tasty. It was covered in carrots and raisins. I was going to get the Chicken Chalau but Dushan talked us out of it. He suggested we go with the Beef Chalau because we had already ordered the Chicken Murgh. He wanted us to mix it up a little. He's fun like that. I am really happy I did because it was the most amazing bowl of food. Imagine the most delicious stew and stew is never good unless it's the Afghan version of stew. Yum! It contained small pieces of shredded beef sautéed in kidney beans, onion, garlic in a tomato base. The flavors were fantastic. It also came with a plate of white basmati rice. This place makes really good tasty rice. Dushan brought me out a bowl of cilantro chutney and it was so good. I put it on my rice per his suggestion. I've had this sauce at other middle eastern places but never one that tasted this amazing. There is nothing like a good house made sauce. This place cares about the food they serve. I read in the menu that they only use organic grass fed meats including organic produce and fruit too. I love that and it is great to know where the food your putting in your body came from. You can taste the quality from the first bite all the way to the last bite. It is unusually to find a restaurant that keeps getting better with every bite. Typically you can always find something that isn't great but not here. The delicious food train keeps rolling and getting yummier with every dish. We were so full, when Dushan decided to finish us off. He brought out a treat for our little one. He delivered a bowl of Firnee which is Afghan pudding that is made with milk, rose fragrance and pistachios. There is also fresh organic seasonal berries on top. He also gave us 3 spoons. I think he wanted to see us fight it out. Ha! Dushan also offered to get us some tea but we honestly couldn't eat or drink anything else. We needed the bill and probably a bed too. This place served up the perfect comfort food on a freezing cold January day. Our family had never had Afghan food until we walked into the Kabul House. Our little one ate everything and has an incredible palate. I do not know many little kids that would be open minded enough to try different looking food. It makes me proud. This was a fun way as a family to experience another culture through there food. Thanks to the Kabul House for going above and beyond our expectations.
