This is a beautiful, quiet restaurant in Evanston! I tried their lentil soup and beef dumplings (mantoo) and was truly impressed. The lentil soup was delicious and reminded me of home. The mantoo was great, but I'm giving it a 4/5 because the sauce on top of it felt too much like mayo. Classically, this is Middle Eastern dish is served with yoghurt so I was a bit taken aback but otherwise everything was on spot. Our dining experience at this restaurant was extremely disappointing. As a family of five, we encountered abysmal service with no water refills, inadequate portions, and a complete lack of communication between the staff and us. The family hummus dish arrived with only three small pieces of bread, and despite requesting more, we were met with further misunderstanding and received only three additional pieces. This resulted in a significant amount of wasted hummus due to the poor service and apparent mismanagement. To make matters worse, the spicy chicken I ordered was undercooked, leading to two returns before I decided to escalate the issue to a manager. The manager's response was lackluster, acknowledging the subpar service without providing any real explanation. While the cook apologized, it was evident that the overall experience was unacceptable. In an attempt to rectify the situation, the restaurant offered a price concession for the meal discrepancies. However, the damage had been done, as my stomach has been unsettled for the past two days due to the undercooked food. I strongly advise others to seek dining alternatives to avoid similar disappointments. The attached image of the undercooked product speaks volumes - a truly unbelievable and unsatisfactory experience. I can think of so many places that offer proper Mediterranean dishes, priced affordable, large portions, great service and ambiance along with proper cooked and delicious meals. I ordered the beef dumplings appetizer 8 piece. It was delicious and so was the sauces for it. The naan was the right amount and size I ordered the lamb chops with afghani rice. It was plentiful. It's become my favorite restaurant in Evanston, and it's my go-to choice whenever I want to impress family or friends who come to visit.   I've tried a lot of their items, and these are my top picks: - Hummus: If I'm honest, the hummus tastes a little different every time I order it. Sometimes, it has a strong garlic flavor; other times, it's tahini-forward. I personally don't mind the variation because it feels more homemade and is still consistently good. - Bulanee: I ate bulanee for the first time here, and I think it changed my life lol. The potato and leek filling is soo flavorful, and it's stuffed inside a soft flatbread -- what's not to love?? - Chicken Kabob: I don't know what they do or add to their chicken thighs, but they're always perfectly seasoned and tender. I've also tried the chicken barg kabob, beef koobideh, lamb chops, and pomegranate glazed salmon but found that nothing beats the chicken kabob! read more

Came here with a friend a few days ago. I have passed it and always wanted to go inside. Seems like they have complimentary pita bread the humus was not but it tasted great nonetheless. My friend he forcsome reason was thirsty and drank like 100 oz of water in an hour. The decor was good. Everyone's tables are spaced well giving everyone room but you can still see what other people are eating...which for me is half the fun. I had the chicken thighs kabobs which were marinated in a nice sauce which gave the chicken some colored texture. I heard there is a chicken shortage in the usa but It did not affect me here.whew. Our group tried Platter #2 and it was delicious! I didn't think basmati rice would work with carrots and raisins but it surprisingly does. I personally loved the lamb chops. My second favorite meat is the Beef Sish skewers. The garlic yogurt dip and hot eggplant tasted good too. The servers were polite and friendly and patiently explained the dishes to us. Went for a date night with my husband and shared hummus, beef dumplings, the beef koobidah, an extra lamb kabob and basil mint iced tea. The hummus wasnt bad it just was pretty bland. The dumplings were better but they were boiled so I wasn't really into the texture, so it's probably not something I would order again. The kabobs were juicy and very good, especially liked the two side sauces that came with. Iced tea was plain tea with basil and mint leaves thrown in. It didn't have really any flavor and was not refillable. Ambiance is very nice, but I don't know if I wouldn't say it screams kid friendly. They do not serve alcohol and apparently it's BYOB, but couldn't find anything on the menu about it. When the waiter came to collect our plates I told him I wanted to use the check in offer from yelp. He said that the owner told them to not accept it since "they weren't associated with that". Absolutely Horrendous - Avoid at All Costs If I could give this place zero stars, I would. This was, without a doubt, the worst dining experience of my life. From the moment I walked in, I regretted my decision. The restaurant smelled like a mix of burnt grease and neglect, and the floors were so sticky that my shoes practically glued themselves to the ground. The service was nonexistent. It took 20 minutes just to get a menu, and when the server finally arrived, they looked like they'd rather be anywhere else. I ordered my food, but by the time it arrived (a full hour later), it was cold, bland, and barely edible. The meat was overcooked to the point of being leather, the vegetables were limp and lifeless, and the entire dish was drowning in some kind of sauce that tasted like expired ketchup. To make matters worse, I'm pretty sure I got food poisoning. Within an hour of leaving, I was fighting for my life in the bathroom. Whatever they served me should be considered a biological weapon. The only thing worse than the food and service? The price. I paid a ridiculous amount for what was essentially a plate of misery. I wouldn't eat here again if you paid me. Do yourself a favor: go literally anywhere else. You'd have a better meal eating stale gas station snacks than whatever this place is trying to pass off as food. read more

Kabul has a very colorfully decorated interior with comfortable chairs and nice spacing between tables. We had refreshing Hibiscus and Tamarind drinks to start.  Our favorite was the Tamarind. For our entrees we had the Lamb Kabob, which Is boneless leg of lamb and the salmon Kabob, which Is grilled pieces of marinated Salmon.  Both absolutely delicious! Lunch entrees come with your choice of Afghan carrot and raisin rice, dill rice, or white rice with humus and salata. Such a complete and delicious meal! We can't wait to go back there! read more

I have passed this place so many times and decided to finally do a pick up order when I was in the area on a Friday night. It was so easy to order online and everything was ready exactly when they said it would be. This was a delicious and flavorful meal! We loved the hummus and Bulanee, which was a flatbread filled with leeks, scallions and potato and came with a yogurt sauce. I had the lamb shank and my husband had the vegetarian qorma. The portion sizes were big and we had enough food for the next two days. The naan and Afghan rice were great accompaniments! The rice had raisins and carrot in it and was just delicious. When I went in to pick up the food, the interior looked really nice. The staff were all following COVID precautions and they were incredibly organized. I can't wait to try more things on the menu. No substitution of rice for hummus, only salads. Meh. Their garlic is made with yogurt. It's called Chakkah. It's okay, essentially a garlic yogurt. It's an extra $6. We got one single pita pocket, not big for 3 of us to eat with our hummus too. We also got some green salsa too. The green salsa is quite good, super vinegary, lemony and quite spicy too. The pita is awful, it's warm, but it doesn't taste so fresh, it actually tastes like the bagged pita and it's quite heavy and dense too. The hummus is so-so. It's not smooth, not great. We have had to ask for the garlic sauce 5 times frok the start of the ordering the meal. The chicken koobideh was decent, super moist, okay flavor, not a ton of flavor, but okay. The spicy chicken kabob was tasty. The kabuli Palau is good, lamb is perfectly cooked, nicely seasoned, carrots are al dente, tad heavy on the rice. read more

Absolutely terrible experience. I've never been treated so badly at a restaurant in my life. My friends and I visited for dinner, and things quickly went downhill when one of my friends found pieces of foil in his rice. We called the waiter over, and while he apologized, things only got worse from there. Initially, the waiter offered us dessert as compensation for the foil in the food, which was a poor attempt at resolving the situation. We politely asked for the rice to be removed from the bill, and the waiter said he would check with the manager. When the manager finally arrived, she told us she would only refund half the price of the plate since my friend had eaten part of it. We explained that it was inedible with foil in it, but she insisted it wasn't a big deal. She reluctantly agreed to discount the whole plate, but that's when the problems really started. We waited forever to get the check, only to find that the promised discount had only been applied to half the plate. The waiter had to call the manager to fix the issue, and what followed was a complete joke. They spoke in Spanish to each other, clearly frustrated, and the manager didn't seem to care at all. She insisted that the correct amount was removed, but the waiter disagreed, saying that we weren't going to pay for half a plate when we were promised a full discount. It was so unprofessional and disorganized. To make things worse, we were hit with a large party fee despite there being no mention of this charge anywhere on the menu. If you're going to charge a party fee, at least mention it upfront. But no, that wasn't the only surprise. When the manager finally came back to "correct" the bill, she made an incredibly disrespectful comment. She told us that our situation was a "bad reflection of our character" and added, completely unprovoked, that at least she didn't "smoke weed all day like us". We were absolutely floored by this comment. We stayed calm, despite how rude she was, and just wanted to pay for our meal and leave. But instead, the manager insisted we leave and "never come back." She was completely unprofessional, rude, and hostile. The entire experience was beyond frustrating, and the way we were treated was completely unacceptable. If you want to avoid being treated like dirt, do yourself a favor and skip this place. The food wasn't anything special, the service was horrendous, and the manager's behavior was outright appalling. I reserved a table for about 20 people. The service was excellent and fast. We ordered individual orders rather than family style. Even with the amount of people they were extremely fast and the food tasted perfect. The location was also beautiful. My parents who do not like to go out for dinner, have the time of their lives. Returned to Kabul House to dine in with guests from out of town, and really can't say enough good things. The interior of the restaurant is gorgeous, with the tables spaced far enough apart to allay COVID concerns and to allow each table to hear their dining companions but not their neighbors. The waitstaff was delightful, bantering when appropriate and bringing each course out on time. And the food was delicious and generously-apportioned. The bulanee (potato & leek turnover) and frozen mint lemonade, both of which I'd yet to try, were exceptionally good. And the meat eaters in our party were equally impressed with their dishes. My only complaint (and it's not really a complaint) is that we had such a fun evening, we lost track of the time, but they never nudged us to hurry up. It started off a lil shaky due to some minor changes we had earlier on (issues with tableware and then finally changing tables) but our waiter very kindly accommodated our group of 9. We decided to order the group platter #2, along with 2 other entrees, the chicken kabob and the lamb shank (not pictured because I forgot). Honestly our group of 9 could've had just the Group Platter #2 and we would've not left hungry. All the apps were delicious but my favorite was the hummus and yogurt. When the meats platter came out, it was such a showstopper. I didn't expect it to be that plentiful based on the menu description. The meats where perfectly cooked - nice char but still juicy on the inside. Super flavorful. I'm not a fan of lamb and usually I'm turned off by the smell of it even if I'm not eating it but there was no lamb smell whatsoever. Those who did eat the lamb enjoyed it very much. The beef and chicken were absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked. We had ordered half Afghan and half dill rice. The dill rice was more popular. I think the Afghan felt slightly new because it's sweeter since it's topped with raisins. Still delicious but the dill rice was definitely a more comfortable dish.
