Out of this world! I came in with high expectations and was still blown away. Full disclosure, me and my husband love pickled foods, so many of the dishes were especially to our taste. From the moment we walked in, the mood was lively, warm, yet intimate. Various Eastern European songs across decades and genres played overhead. The server explained that the best way to have a meal here is to pick a couple hot appetizers, cold appetizers, and a main (or two!). We ended up getting the smoked trout roe, assorted pickled veggies, bread with smetana, herring under a fur coat, schti, Siberian pelmeni, and cabbage rolls. Everything was perfect - the standouts being the herring under a fur coat with its amazing textures and light yet rich flavors and the schti, a rich buttery soup with small chunks of flavorful smoked pork and cabbage. The pelmeni were packed with flavor and comforting, homey, like good dumplings should be. Our server was friendly and the food came out, start to finish, at perfect times. Wow! This place is amazing. This is NOT Russian food, so the people from Russia telling you how it's off by some minor degree don't understand what the food is. It's the food of what used to be the USSR. Most of the dishes are from countries that were at one point part of the USSR--even if they had no desire to be. Countries people fled from when they were part of the USSR (which is how the chef owner got to Portland with her family as a youth). Countries like Ukraine, for example. Attention to detail, in-house preparations and techniques that are demanding and time intensive, and care and love of the food all shine through. Don't skip the desserts. As a Russian , this place was very disappointing. Poor taste, small portions, not authentic. They do, however, have some Russian sodas and canned goods that are authentic. We went for lunch.. The borscht was lacking flavor and was too thick and fatty, and slightly cold. Bread with the borscht was decent. The vareniki were obviously pre-packaged, not homemade. Decent taste, but there are plenty of places to buy frozen packaged vareniki or pelmeni. The fish board had four small spratts, a few slices of onion and one hard boiled egg. Bread was OK. For the prices and portions, place was totally not worth it. It's also counter service for lunch, no table service and bar is not open. If you're craving some Russian beverages (ie tarhun) or canned sauce (ogonok), may be worth a visit. Otherwise I would definitely avoid eating here. read more

We have been at an event where the chef de cuisine was doing a small catering - and those small bites where so delicious and refined that we - in an instant - decided to have dinner at kachka the same night. We have not been disappointed! Yelp has it as a Russian restaurant but it has its roots into all former Russian cuisines and are inspired by those rich, and bold flavors with putting a twist on it. We had the Baltic Sprat Buterbrodi, which is a delightful start with a crispy pumpernickel toast topped with a parsley mayonnaise, a slice of perfectly cooked egg, a sprat - an very tiny smoked fish in oil - some green and topped of with a pickled charlotte! Then Herring Under a Fur Coat which is basically a layered dip of potato mash, Hering, carrot, red beet and some boiled egg crumbles on top. Stuffed Cabbage (beef, lamb and pork) was my main dish and just as I liked it cooked in a delicious sauce. The second main was a delicious vegetarian dish with a corn mash and some potato dumplings ropy pan fried. We ended the meal with the Russian I e cream Sunday and a Ukrainian sour cherry dumpling dish. We left fully overloaded! And totally happy, ready to be back soon. They also integrated a small deli on the second floor where they sell a few of the items and lots more and hard to get things. We can only recommend the ice cream - which is not to sweet - the ajvar - a beautiful red paprika condiment to all kind of grilled meats - and the Russian mustard (carefull be it does not Contain vinegar and might be to strong for the regular American taste - so eat it carefully! We wanted to try something new to celebrate our anniversary. We made a reservation here and were so glad we got the chance to try it! We've never been to a Russian restaurant before and we were excited to try everything on the menu! The inside of the restaurant is very cozy, but the tables are pretty close together. The service was quick, but our server gave off kind of a rude vibe. I think they were joking/sarcastic humor, but it just didn't come off that funny. Besides that we enjoyed our time and the food! Since we put in the notes that it was our anniversary celebration, they gave us complementary sparkling wine, which was super nice of them! We made an earlier reservation so we could catch the last 30 minutes of happy hour. We decided to try the tvorog vareniki, the potato vareniki, and the combo meal. We also got the moscow mule and the yorsch. The vareniki were delicious! The dumplings were cooked perfectly and each had a tasty filling, served with a sour cream like sauce. The combo meal was also great because we got to try a few different dishes! I wasn't a huge fan of the cabbage roll (because I don't like cabbage), but my partner loved it! The sauces are the highlight of the dish: spicy honey mustard and adjika ketchup (kinda like campfire sauce but so much better) - I had the Golubsti. If you like acid and tomatoes than this is your dish. For me there was almost too much tomato that it was a little overpowering. Also I'd prefer the cabbages to be a little more crunchy. Wow - can't believe it took me so long to try this spot! Loved the atmosphere and food was incredible. They were super helpful with me picking gluten-free items from the menu. I didn't have the cheese appetizer but my friends were obsessed and went back the next day to have it again. My favorite was the Golubtsi and caviar!! Their gluten free crackers were amazing as well. My only issue was with my group of 8 the service was great when we first sat down but got really slow after that. A unique place to go for a special night out. We went for a friend's birthday and were not disappointed by the selection of tasty dishes. Two people in our party got the vodka tasting flight and had a fun time trying to discern the differences between the types. Another friend tried the rhubarb vodka and it was a table favorite. I got the horseradish vodka on the recommendation of the server, though it wasn't my favorite and the overwhelming burn of horseradish didn't compliment the vodka sting well, it certainly was unique though. We had to try the herring in a fur coat, just for the name alone. It was actually really tasty and the egg complimented the other layers well and made for a rich taste. The pelminis were the real star of the show. A little Russian dumpling, almost like a ravioli, these beauties were delicious. We arrived early with reservations to a crowded chaotic sm front entry. The ambiance is lovely and there were plenty of available tables, music all loud electronica/EDM. Decor simple with regional whimsy hanging from above. We were seated at the window 4 top with a sm duece to ea side, with supplies, sm plates forks and a few paper napkins stacked in the center. Within 10 min parties had been seated at both sides. Our diminutive server took our drink orders. Those came out after the parties to our sides recd theirs. Then the food order was taken. The standard favs, which seemed to come out again to either table on our sides only to have the original server appologize they were served first. Then additional plates came to those tables and we wondered who was coordinating the table deliveries. No worries really, we were together visiting and knew the owners were also visiting, homeland overseas. Food was unusual and interesting but needed a sm choice on our table of salt, cracked pepper and definitely additional chives. We took a chance on Kachka, no reservations available and just hoped for the best for a walk in. Luckily, they did have seats at the bar available at 5:30pm on a Thursday night. We were able to order some food and drinks off the happy hour menu with 30 minutes to spare. The Moscow mules were delicious. The ginger beer used in it was spicy and flavorful while the vodka was subtle. From the happy hour menu, we also got the bread with whipped salo and the meat pelmini. This was our first taste of salo and we had to google what exactly it was but it was so tasty. It's definitely salty so be a bit light handed at spreading it. The meat pelmini was ordered pan fried which cost an extra $1 but I felt it was worth the extra crunch. The sour cream paired it well and reminded me of pierogis. Off the happy hour menu, we got the rabbit in a clay pot which was insanely good. The rabbit was so tender and fell off the bone instantly upon touch. The stew with cherries was delicious and tasted great dipped with the latkes. Overall a fantastic dining experience, one thing to keep in mind when dining here is give yourself extra time for parking. We were a table of six. My in-laws have Eastern European roots, so they were very skeptical this would be any good. We oreder a lot but the servi e is so good they paced it perfectly. Dishes came every few minutes--it really felt like a lavish feast.We started with bread, butter, pickles, smoked fish, and a stack with the pickle herring and eggs. Our favorite stater was the beans with a puree and a bunch of herbs. We ordered three types of dumplings. They were all soft and buttery. The cherry dumplings surprised everyone with how savory and tart come work together. Our favorite main was accidentally sent to our table. It was some kind of meatball with a green vegatable puree. Overall, this was a great experience, an amazing meal. My in-laws said it was the best Eastern European food they had at a restaurant. Because of the table spacing, we ended up at a table where the sun was right in out eyes, but as it went down, the building across the street was kind enough to shade it for us. Our server was great, and very helpful just like last time. This was one of the two biggest standouts of the night. Deliciously 'shroomie, light crust, we had to argue over the scraps. Chikufta; $10 4.5* spiced armenian lamb tartare with bulgur, sumac, garlic, urfa. lavash crackers. herbs: Not like any tartare I've ever had - sultry middle eastern flavors, and the addition of bulgar (which didn't sound quite like the right thing) turned out to round out the flavors and add the perfect texture. Dumplings: Siberian pelmeni; $13. 4* beef, pork, veal and onion. we had in the classic steamed version. the meat had a good chew, but still tender and hearty meaty flavor Tvorogvareniki; $11 4.5* scallion, farmer's cheese. The dough was even more silken on these and there was just the right amount of scallion to lend some real flavor, without completely overshadowing the delicate cheese. Entrees: Chakapuli grilled trout, $26 4.5* mangal-/red. tarragon sour plum sauce. new potatoes. I wasn't sure about this one. I'm not much of a tarragon fan, and the addition of plum didn't strike me as a plus, but when they say sour plum sauce they mean it, not cloying at all. The potatoes were crisp and delicious. Rabbit in a clay pot; $32 5* MUST GET. hindquarter braised in smetana. porcini, sour cherries, garlic. crispy draniki. Turns out draniki is a potato latke, and they were excellent, crispy, chewy, not oily. The rabbit and porcini were just divine. Should have gotten two. Overall, this place is a real favorite of mine. We recently visited Kachka on a busy Saturday night and had a great experience overall. We were seated shortly after we arrived in a, relatively, quiet corner in the back room. This is a bustling, rather noisy place but this did not bother us whatsoever. As our server advised, we ordered everything to share and there was an ample amount of each item. We started with the heirloom tomato salad, then house baked bread with house made butter, the tuorog vareniki dumplings with farmer's cheese, scallions and chives, then meat-stuffed cabbage rolls. Every item was delicious and well-crafted. I was surprised to read several reviews about poor service. Our server could not have been more attentive and helpful. This is the ambience I love! Casual, fancy, trendy, classic, with food I'd never make at home. My favorite was the 7 layered dip Herring under a fur coat. If you like fish, real fishy fish, you'll love this. The dumplings were also better than most. We had a disappointing dish, Koleta. Our waitress told us to cut into it and the butter would ooze out. It was dry, no butter, not much flavor. But our waitress apologized, and brought us dessert. I'm sure the dish is normally very good, we just got a bad one. This is absolutely my favorite restaurant in Portland. I've been here three times now with friends. My first time here a few years ago, I knew nothing of Russian cuisine. Now we look forward to coming here every chance we get. We went here recently and it the very best so far! We started with some vodka flights of course(!). Just great, as we were in the mood to chat and enjoy ourselves. We got come caviar to begin. Tsar Nicoulai (my fave) with blini, egg and butter. And the Ruski Zakuski for everyone(3) at the table. This Included both hot and cold dishes. There were so many tasty things but here are the highlights: The Okroshka Cold Pickle Soup came in a little glass midway through our meal and on paper sounded really not very good. However, ... IT WAS INCREDIBLY GOOD! So tasty, refreshing and complex. We were kinda dumbstruck. We acknowledged our silly biased preconceptions and marveled at this unusual soup. A real high point. There were so many dishes I just can't upload all the pics. Things like herring under a fur coat, cheese vereniki, fish dip and on and on.... Lastly, we had the "Rabbit in a clay Pot" which was just ridiculously good. I'd never had rabbit before and was just great. We also had a few cocktails. The Moscow Mule was easily the best I'd ever had. They juice their own ginger and I could taste the quality. Outstanding. Fantastic first experience! I'd heard about Kachka from several people, including other restaurant chefs, since moving to Portland, and I'm glad I listened. It was like discovering a speakeasy hidden behind a bookshelf- I found something cool! First, and I'm starting to believe that this is more typical of Portland thank of Kachka itself, the service is simply amazing. Everyone, (ok.... maybe there was 1 slight RBF), was warm and welcoming, and very helpful on understanding the menu selection. Chris greeted me at the entrance, and walked me over to my bar seat. He highly recommended several dishes, two of which I ordered- the Baltic Sprat Buterfrodl (tiny fish and egg on rye toast), and the Siberian pelmeni (meat dumplings topped with smetana (sour cream). My server, the incredibly charming Roberta, who reminded me of the girl that played opposite of Angelina Jolie's "Malificent," helped pick out a cocktail- the luscious Scandinavian Sour- the type of drink that kisses you back, and an excellent way to kick off my dining experience. I was stunned at the flavors of my first two dishes. I had to slow down my eating pace just to savor every morsel (and take slo-mo videos for the 'Gram).... I was like that ugly restaurant critic in 'Ratatouille', except I'm better looking, with better hair.... oh, and biceps. It was.... surprisingly good, like a great first date kiss from your teen years, that you'll measure every other kiss afterwards, for the rest of your life. For my main course, I opted for the stroganoff, which is the only Russian dish I was familiar with on a regular basis. I ordered the extra crispy confit beef tongue, which is an absolute must, IMHO. Here, I was a little more critical. The mushroom cognac sauce was excellent, as was the beef tongue. However, the pasta was cooked 1-2 minutes too long, leaving a squishy consistency, and unfortunately took away from the experience. If you're a stroganoff fan, I highly recommend you request al dente pasta. Lastly, Chris came through his dessert recommendation- the Fenugreek Plombir Sundae. I have NEVER had a dish like this before. This Russian style ice cream adorned with hazelnut praline crunch, cacao nibs, and kefir caramel, was so amazing it was like my first almost-sex experience that left a confetti mess in my pants. It made me grin..... a teenager trapped in a grown man's body, but with amazing hair and solid biceps, so if you saw me and squinted your eyes, I looked sexy. Great place to have a truly special meal. The main dishes are just a small part of the meal, it's the sides and starters with lots of vodka that makes this a phenomenal meal to share with friends and family. All of their bread related items are delicious and the butter is soooo good. The herring dip was great, along with the cod liver. The meat board is so fun, there's always something you never thought you'd ever eat that turns out to be delicious. Kachka was wonderful! I went for my 50th birthday, and everything was amazing! As a retired chef and server, I was so enthused to learn that the employees get health insurance and the tips are included in the cost of the food! What a great business! I've never heard of that. The food was absolutely wonderful! My wife and I ordered a variety of different items that were then coursed very well throughout the evening. The service was attentive and kind! Our server was patient and respectful of any and all requests or questions we had and were even quite helpful in recommending food options. The environment was cozy and comfortable. Although tight in places, it didn't feel over crowded. Our favorite dish was the meat dumplings and the horseradish vodka to sip(trust me, it's a revelation and pairs nicely with all food items) overall, we are looking forward to returning soon in the future when we make our way back to Portland!
